    Finally, a correct video showing the full transmission service and not like all the other half-ass videos that only show the transmission oil being changed,, which does not get the other 2 liters of oil out of the torque converter. This video ALSO shows how to access the torque converter drain plug and how to replace the remaining ATF OIL. THANK YOU!!!!

    Im always amazed how a group of top notch engineers could not come up with a more convenient and easier way to change this fluid. My 1960’s chevy Nova has a drain plug on the transmission pan and you fill the fluid through the dip stick pipe. Changing the fluid take a wrench and a funnel. Good job though, cant believe you had to drill a hole to be able to access the torque converter dran plug.

    Absolutely best video! I have also tried this at home and there is an extra procedure if you have the START/STOP function of removing the auxiliary pump. Also, for me, I had a hard time on replacing the pan gasket first time as the pan gasket easily gets twisted and leaks fluid once you fill-up the fluid so had to do all over again. For those doing first time transmission fluid changes, please be careful when attaching pan gasket!

    Clean, detailed and accurate video, especially the 4Nm and then the 180 degrees. You did it all right! No mistake. But, there is room for improvement if it is okay to accept a suggestion. By the way, when you drill on any metal in the future, put a magnet about a centimeter distance next to drilling so it can catch all the filings regardless if you'll use a magnetic sweeper later or not. The improvement is next time let the car do the complete flush for you by placing a tubing on the exit line of the 722.9 while the engine is running. At the same time keep adding new fluid. It is located on the side of the 722.9 close to its front. Look at the side of the transmission (of the passenger side) and you'll also need two new rubber seals to replace them after you are done. It's impressive how organized you are. Every tool has a home!

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  4 года назад +1

      I appreciate your compliment. The magnet to collect the metal debris is a good idea, I'll try it next time for drilling steel or iron. Just the shell of the TC bell is aluminum. To flush out the transmission and the torque converter is the process to replace the ATF w/o replace the filter. I listed the guiding document at the end of the page www.leighsr.com/atf-change-7229. Thanks again for your comment and I'll happy to discuss it at the www.leighsr.com/forum/ben-chi-lun-tan-mercedes-benz-forum/about-7g-atf-change

      @@LeighSr Thank you for posting the PDF documents. They are all helpful. The document named "Flush out automatic transmission and torque converter" is what I was referring to. Thank you again for the documents.

      You only need to remove the oil cooler or return line if you are trying to do a complete flush. Dealers don’t even do TC when they charge you 650 for it. What is did was per MB bulletin/manual. Doing a complete flush is over kill.

    Excellent video. I would drain and remove the pan along with the filter before draining the torque converter. Removing the filter will allow air to get into the torque converter so it comes out as a steady stream. I also introduce about 7 psi air into the filter pick up tube using the CTA-7650 adapter to get more fluid out. The TC should yield around 2 liters.

    Great video thanks. I have gle 350 but the torque converter drain is at an angle even with small drilling hard to reach so what I did instead I flushed using return transmission line which in my case is on the passenger side of the transmission. Just remove one screw and pull out the return line. After that I connected with a pipe drain in a graduated jug I used the empty ATF fluid 1 gallon as it already has the marking. I started the engine till I get 2 lit out and the pumped 2 lit in. Repeated the process till the fluid has same color as new. It took 13 lit to completely flush and fill to the over flow mark at 45 Celsius.. this video helped. So I think return fluid line of flush is better as every drop of fluid is flushed and no need for drilling also not just draining torque and transmission pan will not allow fluid in pipe , cooler and valve body to clear. Only flush through return line will remove every drop . Some might need more fluid based on how dirty the transmission is.. thank you

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  2 года назад

      Thank you and Flushing is ok, but I still recommend replacing the ATF filter and cleaning the oil pan. You can see there is too much sludge on the bottom of the oil pan in the video.

    In keeping your video relevant, let me first start by saying Thank You! For giving us a thorough understanding of what it takes to change our transmission fluid and filter. I would only like to provide an update on my own experience with my 2012 E550 4.7 liter twin turbo transmission fluid change as it appears to be different insofar as the torque converter. I approached my local Mercedes Benz dealer here in Florida who explained they would not change the fluid within the torque converter and would charge close to 400 USD which included fluid and filter. The torque converter bolt could be found just in front of the transmission pan which was similar to your experience however it was located in a flat area and not in the bell housing (I was ready to drill out the bell housing but the engineers seemed to make some much needed improvements in accessing the torque converter bolt/plug) the other difference was that my crank shaft bolt was a 27mm socket. After finding the bolt after turning the crank, Ioosened the 4mm Allen bolt but literally nothing came out but a few drizzles. Luckily it did have the distinctive smell of transmission fluid or I would have thought I opened different bolt. I changed the fluid when the vehicle was cold, and my question was should I have ran the vehicle to warm it to operating temperature in order for the torque convertor to yeild more fluid? I would think that being cold would be ideal.

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  Год назад +1

      Thank you.
      The main reason for the trickle is because there is no air vent, also the the drain hole is too small, you might open the transmission’s plug to drain the ATF at the same time.

      @@LeighSr Amazing what a resource it is. You were my inspiration to tackle my E550 as it has the new blue fluid and it has the A85 option (not sure what thay means but FCP said it was one of the lowest viscosity fluids and has a few special additives). I changed the transmission fluid regularly on my 97 C230 and my 2010 GL450 and used Valvolines MaxLife Full synthetic. I was able to get about 2-3 liters out of those torque converters (real slow drip as you mentioned but steady). The only thing I did differently was a tried to drain the converter first versus having the pan off when draining the older vehicles (the 97 has the 722.6 and the GL has the 722
      9). Perhaps not removing the pan creates more of a vacuum (??).

    Hi Senior Leigh, it's a great easy to understand step-by-step video. Thanks for sharing. And a question for you if you don 't mind? When the pan is bolted back up, and the initial 9 litres have been pumped into the trans,. At this point you start the engine and shift through "R" "P" and "D", repeatedly, with the engine running all the time. Then when the temp reaches 45c, check if there is fluid running back down the input pipe. If not, you pump a little bit more in, then wait until it start's to run back down the pipe. ( all the time at 45c) When it slows to a trickle, remove the input pipe, and replace the drain stud, And all this time, you will have the engine running?
    Thanks again, Jim.

Did the hdx sprayer come with the clear hose? Secondly, where can I get the items you used to plug into OBD II port as well as the diagnostic program? thirdly, did you buy all the ATF stuff as a kit or piece seperately? 1, For the MB 722.9 ATF filler adapter: amzn.to/3ge9lAt
      For the tubing, No, that is bought separate, it's regular 3/8" PVC tubing, you might buy it from Home Depot or Lowe's;
      2, MB star SD connect C4, I bought it from here: @t, You might use an IR thermometer to test the temperature of the oil pan instead, but that's not accurate. I suggest every MB DIYer has a MB Diagnostics;
      3, I used to purchase twice the material of ATF replacing, one is separating, one is kit. It's up to you. Just get them all if you buy separately.
      Yes, you can do it. Keep a Mercedes is not a high-cost thing.

    Question- I've seen different approaches on the refill. It appears you added all of the transmission fluid before starting the car and getting to 45' temp. I've seem some where folks add 6L, warm fluid to 45' then add another 3L, warm car again to 45' and then shift through gears and perform the leveling procedure. It seems the transmission can take all 9L in the beginning, and also appears this is the procedure per the WIS.

    Substep:
    8.1 Connect the refill adapter;
    8.2 Pump in the ATF approx 10 liters, 8 liters for 722.93/96;
    Check the model of transmission, Never mind.

    Senior Leigh. At 17:00 into your video you are pumping in the ATF fluid. I am curious if there is pressure building up in the transmission fluid chamber or did you do something to allow the air to come out as the fluid was pumped in?

      There is a vent valve on the top of the transmission case to balance the pressure. See the picture of the 722.9 on www.leighsr.com/722-9

    Interesting the torque converter drain was not accessible through the hole without drilling. I've actually done transmission fluid change in my old W201. The difference I notice is that your wheels are hanging loose (suspension unsprung) and I had wheels down (on ramps in front). I wonder if wheels are holding up vehicle maybe torque converter screw is accessible without drilling a hole? Thoughts???

    I remember reading and seeing other videos of this service of the W212 transmission fluid, but never as great as this one. I had a 2012 E350 Bluetec, but the transmission fluid had to be changed every 40k miles. I had the prepaid service at the time and not knowing how involved it was, I left it to the dealership. Now, if I still had my W212, I'd be comfortable and confident doing the service after watching your video. I know the bolts are single use, they're made of aluminum. Were the clips all the same size or did you have to remember the position of the clips around the pan when it came to installing with the new screws? I know you drilled an access hole, but when it came down to draining the torque converter, was the issue the wrong angle on the torx tool or is it a special tool that you need to buy? During the draining and leveling of the fluid, would it be a good idea to use the filler adapter with the clear plastic hose to better control the flow into the drain pan? I've always heard of the mityvac to fill the pan, but they are a lot more expensive. It was a really great idea to use a sprayer to pump the fluid, I would have never thought of that option. I have an idea for another video. When I had the transmission fluid done, I also had the differential fluid changed. I know there isnt any mention of this in the service manual, but I figured to do the power train from start to finish! Awesome to be able to see all these great videos!

      If the model year of your E350 is 2012, the ATF change interval is 70k miles or 7 years. more detail might visit en.leighsr.com/mb-7g-atf-change-w212.
      For the clips, there are 5 same and 1 different, the special one is at the corner to fix the cable located at the front right. That's pretty easy to identify.
      For the drilling access hole, that must be a design defect, offset hole. I tried to cut short an L key to access, but the room is to tight, I can't take the screw out, even I can loose the screw. I researched the whole of the MB booklet, no special tool for that. That won't happen with my S550.
      To manage the drain flow, that's difficult. Because the oil will drain immediately when you remove the drain plug. Only collect it with a big pan. The filler adapter only can use on filling.
      The differential fluid is lifetime using, no necessary to change, except G class.
      Thanks again for your compliment!

Bought a 2012 E350 and want doesnt look like anything as far as transmission fluid, diff fluid or transfer case has been done per the Carfax. Thanks for any information you can provide.@@LeighSr

    Thank you very much and I would like to ask you 2 more questions
    1. When drilling the torque converter area, can needle pieces get into the body and thus cause damage after the rubber cap is closed?
    2. I can't actually buy a diagnostic machine to check the temperature. I read somewhere that when the outside temperature of the oil bottom case reaches 38 degrees, the oil temperature inside is about 45 degrees. So is it possible to do it that way?

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  2 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply!
      1, Drilling is at the case part, not into the bell of the torque converter. So that won't damage the TC or AT;
      2, Because of the accuracy of the IR thermometer, the result is unreliable. There is a diagnostic tool that can read the AT temperature: amzn.to/3QQWZ3O

    Senior Leigh, excellent video. What is your opinion on using the flush device 7 lb/sqin pressure to extract all the rest of the ATF from the case? You would then add the full 9 liters. Is there risk with this method? Thank you.

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  4 года назад +2

      Thank you, and the best way to keep the transmission clean is to replace the oil filter and thoroughly clean the oil pan where collected most oil sludge. The transmission case is a relatively enclosed space, so the ATF won't oxidize like engine oil. That's why the ATF change interval is 4 or 7 years. To filling 10 liters to the transmission once, or twice (6 liters + 4 liters), WIS did not list the reason for 6 +4 liters and did not prohibit filling 10 liters once, so I filled it once and then drain out approx 1 liter to correct the ATF level. More detail on www.leighsr.com/atf-change-7229 and welcome discussion on the forum of leighsr.com

    • @LeighSr

      Thank you and yes the first step was to move the A/T to N position, but that's is not necessary due to the TC is unlocked when the engine off. My 2013 W212 without an ECO Start/stop function, so no auxiliary pump remove. After 2014 w212 equipped the ECO start/stop, there is an auxiliary pump that has to be removed to reach the TC drain screw. Thank you, and yes you might measure the temperature of the ATF oil pan with an IR thermometer instead of the MB Star. The downside is not accurate, that may lead to the capacity of ATF is not accurate. For waiting time, maybe 10 mins.
      In conclusion, I strongly recommend buying an MB star, that may worth two times of maintenance at the dealer workshop.

    • @LeighSr
      @LeighSr  3 года назад

      That's a design bug of the MB. So the dealer gives up to drain ATF of the TC. That leads to at least two liters of ATF can not be changed. The TC case is made of aluminum, it's soft and easy to drill. The TC bell is made of stamping steal, very tough, so don't worry, that's safe to the TC for enlarge the access hole. In the video, I tried many methods other than drilling the case, but I failed that I did not show in the video.
