    IMPORTANT STEPS after reflow
    1. ATI settings in control panel should be manually lowered to least possible level in every tab.
    2. Forget the Games.DO NOT play any games that will heat up the GPU with 3D Graphics.
    3.Turn off windows AERO effects.
    4.Keep the Laptop elevated using a laptop cooler or use plastic bottle caps to raise the ground clearance.
    These steps will ensure longevity of reflow repair.
    Upvote this to let others know.

    I've just done it but in shorter procedure.
    Without liquid flux and detailed cleaning.
    I heated per 2 min in 150 - 200 degrees Celsius.
    It've worked.
    I've been doing tests since 2 hours and everything works.

    Great simple explanation.From a to z!
    I really do appreciate this video. It's too pricey if I would left it at Dell repair shop.
    Totally missed the flux in the re-flow process, that was a great hint. although renewing silicon paste is unbelievably effective for better thermal conductivity and thus lower temperatures.
    Still some isopropyl alcohol for cleaning the remaining flux near the edges would make it the best done.
    Keep it up . Liked and superscribed ;)

    It will work only 1-2 months. Then it will back when you watch HD videos. re-flow is only temporally. Once ATI chip is defective that means it time to go. this is DELLs worst shitty stuff in their laptops. well Thanks. If some one can use more than 6 months after re-flow thats great.

    Hey I have a Dell xps 15 l502x. I have the same 8 beep problem so it is an lcd failure. I don't have thermal grease so I'm just going to open it a certain amount and try cleaning it. But my question is, can I still follow these steps even though I have a different dell laptop? Also is there any chance of the problem being fixed without thermal grease?

  • @Christopher_T_Paul
    @Christopher_T_Paul 6 лет назад +1

    Here is the thing. This is only a temporary solution, the same problem will soon come back.
    Everyone think that reflowing or reballing a GPU will fix it. the fact is that 99% of the time it has nothing to do with the solder balls connecting the GPU to the motherboard.
    The actual fault is you have a bad GPU and applying the heat to the heatsink will give the temporary repair.
    The only way to fix it permanently is to replace the GPU.

    hello that video is very helpful . i didn't find the FLux which you use for the graphic card and i use TOPNIK AG-5 . the air hot gun i use number 1 on 300 degrees and for about 2 minutes . It still work the laptop was fix but i hope is possible if you give little more info about your work like what should be the temperature on the air hot gun because not every gun is the same and what we can use instead of something what is hard to find . for me nothing on the video i couldn't find and i search allot to find something the same . But your work is very good and helpful thank you one more time and i hope to post more videos like that :)

    I have also 8 beep problems screen goes black but it works well with HDMI on external monitor so what should be the problem in my laptop ?

      +Jaypal Vansia You should check that yours graphics card is working properly or not. You can check it from device manager.
      For GPU test.
      1. type device manager in start menu and open it
      2. Find out display adapters, double click on it, you will find you GPU's name and model number.
      3. Check whether it is working or not.
      For LCD test.
      1. shutdown you pc
      2. press D+power until bright screen appears , it will start test automatically

    Hi Piyush
    I have the same laptop. I had the issue of 8 beeps when switching on the laptop.
    I followed the steps. However I didnt have thermal paste and Flux with me. So I just used the hot air to heat the graphics chip.
    However, after re-assembing everything the laptop has stopped booting altogether. There are no more 8 beeps and the light on the power button is also not getting up when pressing it. Any idea as to why it could happen?

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  4 года назад

      Don not turn on or use your laptop without applying thermal grease, as soon as you press the power button of laptop GPU, CPU and Video card along with other onboard chip is reaching up-to 40 to 60 degree temperature all at a sudden (i.e within 4 -7 sec), and if temperature will increased in drastic manner it will not allow to turn on the laptop to save the processing units from burning.
      This might be on of the reason why you laptop is not turning on.
      At list you could place the old thermal grease on the processing units which will work but not for long time
      >this 8 beep problem is coming due to GPU heat up so keep your laptop as cool as possible.
      Alternative of thermal grease: use Colgate white color paste and use it carefully do not let it fall on any other exposed components on the MB. toothpaste might be conductive.
      in case if it still did not work, the re-check all the connections carefully.
      1. battery charging board connection with motherboard(MB)
      2. Power switch cable connection with MB
      3. all other data-bus or cable connections.
      CAUTION: PERFORM ABOVE STEEPS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
      Do let me know in case you need further help on the same.

    Hi Piyush, thanks for the video. I'm getting the error 'Display driver stopped responding and has recovered' - error (this is normally happening on overheating) after which the screen gets distorted and the system has to be rebooted (as it does not recover on its own). On rebooting there are 8 beeps - I have to enter the system into Safe Mode after which I have to disable the driver software in (Safe Mode >> device manager >> Display adapter >> disable - Ati mobility radeon 5000 series) and restart the system in normal mode without the driver software. Also sometimes the laptop screen wont start on D+Power button, i have to plug the system to external monitor with VGA . Please help. I'm confused as to its is the GPU problem or the Driver Software Compatibility or LCD (cable / screen) . If its the GPU should i go for reflow or reballing?

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  8 лет назад

      For sure it is GPU problem. Use you laptop as long as it is working and you should keep your laptop as cool as possible. But at last you need to go with the GPU re-flow or GPU re-balling, better to go with the re-flow as GPU re-balling is done by very few repairing center and cost you much.
      The problem you are facing is the same problem for which I have posted the above video.

    I really liked the video except for too much thermal grease on CPU & GPU...when u push the heat spreader & tighten screws 90% of it will flow away from the chip...heat spreaders are almost flush to the chip except some uneven surface,thats why we put a layer of thermal grease which removes any possible air gap & conductivity is maintained 100%

      All problems which you mentioned in the comment is an individual problem.

    What thermal paste is should I buy for my inspiron n5010... There are so many products in the market. Cooler master 8w/mk, 5w/mk, 2w/mk (all these have viscosity 100 - 200pa-s and there is one particular brand which has 1pa-s and conductivity 30w/mk

    Hello. I'm also having a Dell Inspiron N5010 (ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650) and the same issue. I hope to try things which you have done in this video and could you please let me know that do i really need to use Flux before heating the GPU? or is it enough just heating the GPU without using Flux on it? Waiting for your reply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, because i'm really in a trouble this time with this error :( . Thank you.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  7 лет назад

      Yes it is important to use flux because In high-temperature metal joining processes like soldering, the primary purpose of flux is to prevent oxidation of the base and filler materials. for example, tin-lead solder attaches very well to copper, but poorly to the various oxides of copper, which form quickly at soldering temperatures. Flux is a substance, which is nearly inert at room temperature, but which becomes strongly reducing at elevated temperatures, preventing the formation of metal oxides. Additionally, flux allows solder to flow easily on the working piece rather than forming beads.
      In case you are proceeding for the GPU re-flow without flux it would be definitely a temporary solution to fix this type of issue.

      No, it completely depends on laptop motherboard, if there is any space available for GPU inside the laptop then only it can be placed otherwise no chance.

    I have the same issue with my N5010. Is this a permanent fix? or should i go for graphics conversion (ATI to Intel)?

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  8 лет назад

      It depends upon the technical person, how precisely he is performing the re-flow. For me, my laptop is working smoothly since my first and last repair i.e 1.5 years ago.
      Conversion to Intel is not a bad idea, you can proceed for it.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  7 лет назад

      This problem occurs due to overheating of laptop, to overcome this problem temporally you need to keep the laptop as cool as possible. Use good quality cooling pad to keep the laptop at nominal temperature and try not to use multiple application simultaneously or any bulky or heavy graphics application.
      If you want permanent solution of this you need to follow the steps below:
      1. clean you laptop from inside. It might be possible that the exhaust vent is loaded with dust particles. and also apply new thermal grease on processor and GPU.
      2. If 1st did not works then try replacing the heat sink with the new one. Most of the time 1st method works properly and give new life to your laptop.

  • @ratneshgangwar8840
    @ratneshgangwar8840 7 лет назад

    it was a nice demonstration.there is one doubt about the pressure which you applied after heat gun process,how much pressure ,how to measure or compair the intensity of that pressure.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  7 лет назад

      Very nice question Ratnesh. To understand the amount of pressure you need to perform the penny/coin test for you heat gun which you will use to perform the re-flow process. First you have to perform it with one coin by putting the soldering element on the coin, which will give you the idea about the time and temperature which is required to melt the soldering element. The next test you need to do with two coins, steps are given below:
      Test 2 (test with two coins)
      1. take 2 coins.
      2. cut the soldering element in size of nearly 3mm (cut 4 - 6 small 3mm soldering metal)
      3. place 1st coin and put all the 4 - 6 cut-piece on that coin maintaining the small gape nearly of 2 - 3 mm.
      4. now put the 2nd coin over this arrangement properly in sandwich manner.
      5. Apply heat on the arrangement with the same temperature, time and the distance you have kept on the previous test.
      6. after reaching the time limit, keep the heat-gun apart.
      7. Take some flat surface cylindrical heat resistive object, and place it properly in the center of the coin and apply the pressure in such a way that the soldering element did not bridge the connection.
      This part is very tricky, if you are performing it on your computer be careful, in the video I have placed the screwdriver just after re-flow but applied a very small pressure after 4 - 5 sec because as the time goes the soldering element is approaching the stage of getting solidify. Hello Piyush. Thank you for making this professional video. If possible, could you please make one on how to bypass amd/dedicated GPU so that only integrated Intel GPU gets used? I had my amd gpu reflowed a year ago and it has given up on me. I am not sure reflowing
    again would last long now.

      Thank you for the comment, I am not having the old model laptop as of now, however I will try my best to make a video on bypassing GPU to use integrated intel video card directly.
      In the mean while you could try GPU re-flow once again in the same manner as you have done it previously or as I am doing in the video.
      Thank you.

      for just re-flow it could be 500 to 1500 INR.
      for reballing the GPU 4k to 7k.
      I would suggest not to do it. In case you are going with the above option ask them to provide guarantee for at least 6 month. Cause I did not found any repairing shop, even good repairing center providing even 3 month warrantee. Some good repairing shop will provide you 30 days warrantee.
      Not if you are spending huge amount on this like reballing then ask them for the warrantee at least for 1 year otherwise don't go for it. It will be a bad deal for you.

      It is definitely a problem of heating, which already affected the GPU. Try cleaning your laptop specifically the exhaust vent and apply new thermal grease then check if this problem is resolved.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  8 лет назад

      +Alexander González Chavarría I would not recommend you to do so. But if you want, then try it once but remember the processor should support the mother board chipset number. Also compare each and every pins/pads, cache memory, clock speed of processor with the previous processor which came with your laptop.
      If you laptop is slow, you can try to increase the memory (RAM) of your computer first. If it doesn't work then you can give a try to replace the processor.
      You can get details of Intel processor from : ark.intel.com/

    Hello piyush sir, till yesterday my laptop was working fine, but suddenly the display went off while playing assassins creed. After that i took a look at this video & got to know that its a gpu problem and need to reflow it. But i am new to all this and don't have much technical skills in computer hardware. So i wanted to confirm from your side that what are the thinks which are tricky and needs to be done by a certified technician or will i be able to manage it completely, without any technical help?
    P.S I am a Mechanical Engineer

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  8 лет назад +4

      Some times laptop get overheated and suddenly turn off. If it is getting turned on again then you GPU is working fine you just need to clean up you laptop and apply new thermal grease over GPU and the CPU and try to keep your laptop as cool as possible specially while using bulky and heavy applications or gaming.
      And if you laptop is not getting turned on and giving 8 or 7 beeps then it is having GPU(for 8 beeps) or LCD(for 7 beeps) issue.
      you can perform the GPU re-flow process by your self, but if you are having any doubt in doing the GPU re-flow, don't apply to much heat, by applying a little heat your laptop will be working but for few months or for 1 or 2 days.
      If you are not comfortable with this, better to search for good technician or the computer center who is providing the grantee for the work. It will cost you nearly 700 to 1000 in INR currency.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  6 лет назад

      You can do any thing, however take care of only one thing that, you laptop should not get heated up. Simply I can say, you need to keep you laptop as cool as possible while it is in switch on/working mode.
      It might be possible your laptop will be overheated in case you are playing any high resolution game, for which even a laptop cooler will fail, so as per my recommendation you should not play those games.
      you can do general stuff like watching movies, web surfing, documentation etc, I would like to recommend one more thing, avoid using multiple(heavy application) computer application simultaneously, to keep it cool.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  8 лет назад

      I want to clarify one thing that, if you are getting scrambled display then it's for sure the problem is related to GPU. You will not get 8 beep sound till you are getting any visuals on the screen. 8 Beeps occurs only if your are not getting visuals on the screen, only to identify the particular error, as number of beeps is a code to identify the error related to particular parts in the computer. In your case you are getting visual on you screen hence any technical person can understand that it is a problem of Graphics card.

      @PiyushPrasoon  8 лет назад

      dell inspiron N5010 is having on board GPU. Very few technicians are performing the replacement. By the way you GPU is not malfunctioning, It is not working properly because of the bad contact of it's pins/pad with the mother board. It can be corrected by performing the GPU re-flow, which I have performed in the above video.

      As per your problem stated above, it depicts that the GPU got de-soldered i.e it underwent bad contact with motherboard. If laptop is getting switched on for some time, continue using it in the same way till it supports. But it is sure that it will not get switched on after some days or month, the fix for this is given in the video, for proper fix you need to perform the GPU Re flow as shown in the video.
      And it is not the issue related with the GPU driver, If you laptop is getting switched on it means GPU is working properly till the laptop turned off.
      The main cause of this problem is accumulation of heat inside the laptop when it is running. If it is getting switched on for some time you can extend the time by keeping you laptop as cool as possible.
      In case you are having doubt you can check if it is giving 8 beeps or not. You can perform the LCD test to insure that the current problem is related with GPU or not.
      LCD test : ruclips.net/video/Lj4puS0b9SQ/видео.html if this fails then it is LCD fault.

Thank you very much for all your help. I subscribed to your channel; so I will be looking forward to your next video. Take care.

    What is the different between without graphics card and with graphics card dell Inspiron n5010 laptop please sir tell me

      Graphics will enhance the visuals on your screen, most video cards are not limited to simple display output. Their integrated graphics processor can perform additional processing, removing this task from the central processor of the computer. Mostly graphics card equipped pc is used by graphics designer, gamer, architect etc.

      I would like to tell you one more thing, these days as per my knowledge, cheap laptop equipped with graphics card is having average life of 2-3 years only. So better be sure before purchasing any laptop by reading the proper review from legitimate article or reviewer.

      Dell inspiron n4010 me GPU nahi hota hai, usme video card hota hai. To jaise maine is video me GPU ko re-flow kya hai, usi tarah se apko bhi dell n4010 laptop me video card ko re-flow karna hoga. Reference ke lye app Dell n4010 ka video niche dye kye link pe click karke dekh sakte hai.

    Please Piyush, I took my laptop to the local laptop repair shop to perform a reflow. They said my model does not have an isolated Grafic card. Model Inspiron 15 5000 Series. Do you have any idea a work around they charge me $85. to tell me that.

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  7 лет назад

      It is really a high price, if they have charged you $85 for doing nothing, as these things can be reveled easily by searching it with particular model number for detailed information on internet. Even if you will go for the repair it will cost you in between of $30 to $50.

      I text chat with Dell tec. support. He sais 8 beeps is LCD no more explanation. He will send FedEx to pick it up, fix and return it for $250. :-( I'll let you know what happen ;-)

      Nice you have chosen the best option and yes, if any technician come to know about this 8 beeps error in 15 5000 series Dell laptop until they haven't diagnose it, they will tell you the same thing, however as per user's report most of the time 8 beep is responsible for the GPU failure in 15 5000 series Dell Laptops.
      And of course I will wait for your next response. Let me know if they are giving you warranty for 1 year or more.

      First of all please confirm the below points:
      1. Did you ever taken you laptop for repair to local computer repairing shop?
      2. Is GPU getting detected in device manager?
      3. How old is your laptop?
      4. since how long you start facing this issue?

      @@PiyushPrasoon hi
      thanks for taking time to answer me, and for your questions:
      1- yes i did, but i think that the technicien has only cleaned the exhaust fan so the GPU has start to work for one week and the problem reappeared.
      2- the GPU is detected in divice manager with the instaled driver only on the safe mode and the screen show deformed colors ( i used glac bags in the aire inflow outside the laptop and the colors are slightly modfied)
      3- i used my laptop for almoste 7 years ( used for long duration scientific simulations).

      Please perform penny test to ensure how long and from how far you need to re-flow the GPU to achieve better result, rest depends upon you performances and preciseness. Even after doing GPU re-flow with great care may gives you -ve result or your PC may work for some days, months, 1 year or years. so don't get disappoint from 1 or 2 attempts.

    I have the same problem with the same laptop. Is this only a temporary solution?

    • @PiyushPrasoon
      @PiyushPrasoon  Год назад +1

      Yes it is a temporary solution, and my temporary time period was 1.5 - 2 years. So it completely depends how precisely it has been taken care and how good you are handling the laptop.
      Just one liner - try to keep your laptop well ventilated (keep it cool) while in use.
