  • In this video I show how to reflow the solder under a graphics chip. The laptop was not giving video or showing any other signs up booting up.
    I began with troubleshooting steps to rule out a problem with the screen and RAM memory. Next I disassembled the laptop to get to the motherboard. I reflowed the solder under the GPU and reassembled the laptop.
    It worked. The computer booted into Windows.
    This is the hot air rework station I use in the video. I've had it for 2.5 years.

    thank you for this video i followed your steps i have a Toshiba Satellite L505D and its around 8yrs old, it has the same exact issue with the one your working with and i already had it fixed but after a month it just wont turn on anymore,today i decided to give it another try and did the reflow myself but instead of using a flux i just heated the video chip using the a hair drier and aluminum foil and cleaned the heat sink,at first try it didnt do nothing so i used the hair dried again to heat the video chip again.......VOILA!!! it suddeny turned ON!! i was about to keep this laptop in the closet but i guess it still has a lot more to do with this......im using the laptop right now while doing this comment!! thanks again for the video you HELPED ME ALOT!!! BTW this is my very first laptop given to me by my uncle as a present from Calfornia......im from the Philippines :-)

    Integrated graphics with the CPU is the way to go. The reflow doesn't work long. New graphics chips are available just solder a new one in the same way as reflow - but be very accurate alignment is needed.

    these vids are great, would like to see some actual times and distances for the hot air gun. 220C is fine, but for how long and at what distance? Id go a little higher than 220 as stated. reflow profiles are usually ramp up to 200-220 for 4 minutes, then spike at 235-250 for 30-60 seconds then bring it down to room temp over another 3 minutes. you can just use your distance to increase the heat if you set your gun at 250. thermocouples are inexpensive but should be kapton taped to the top of the chip so as to reduce the hat air acting right on the tip. for the price of a $60 hot air rework station, this is a profitable fix.

    Replace the chip if you want peace of mind. Most times it's the heating of the failing chip itself, not the sodder that temporarily fixes your problem.

    I have one of those plastic small parts storage boxes and I group my screws in order and label each compartment (if needed). Very easy and organized. Also, 220 c (428 f) at about half on the air power? And on the shim thickness, maybe you want the copper shim a little thinner than the pad because the pad squishes down a little when putting the heat sync back on and you don't want too much pressure pushing down on the GPU chip cause you could end up with the same problem with the solder connections breaking... Thanks!

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

      Dano C. Not sure what you mean by at about half on the air power. I wasn't really looking at the overall pad thickness I was actually looking at the already squished portion of the pad.

    I normally remove the glue before heating - this allows a nudge on the chip to check if balls have melted - using a carefully selected shim will give great results but reflows on chips like GPU's are touch and go for how long they last - this is why a reball is always better but is a pain in the ass to do

    good job … have to admit I had never heard / read about the term 'reflow' until I searched for my problem and reached some links including this one …my problem however, is not with my Toshiba's main display, which is working fine … it's the secondary external monitor that was also working fine for about a year or so until a few days ago it started giving me trouble by turning the HD off when the monitor is connected!at first I thought it was a PSU problem (I don't use the laptop's battery: it's dead!) that cannot power up the HD anymore due to old age or something because I also have some other memory stick and wireless mouse receiver etc gizmo connected as well ... but eventually, it turned out to be the secondary monitor that when connected, causes the HD to stop working, thus turning the system entirely OFF!weird stuff really as after more than 3 decades of working with all kinds of computers I have never seen something like this happen!both the monitor as well as the laptop are ok, they worked together quite finely too, but now it's happening like this! such a bore indeed because I've been using my main computer and this laptop and other computers with an extra monitor added for a long time now and having to go back to a single monitor feels so darn like living in the stone age!any clues anyone please?laptop: TOSHIBA Satellite L645 (purchased in 2010 but been retired for a number of years since 2015 maybe, back to service since last year …)

    I would make sure to run a day long GPU stress test just to be sure the problem doesn't crop up again through the resoldering being incomplete. Just booting into Windows isn't enough to test if your operation was a success.
    I literally just did this operation three days ago and just ran Furmark for 24 hours, GPU at +/- 70 degrees.
    Also, if you're going to use tin foil, make sure that it's pushed around the edges of the chip and really seals it off, otherwise you've got hot air just travelling underneath and if you give that board a tap, another component might get affected.
    Still though, I've fixed many computers using this method, before I had a heat gun, I used a stack of coins and a blowtorch, testing it first on a loose piece of soldering iron to check the time required to melt :P

    you did it very nicely.
    i would wanted to do those as well, but sadly i don't have the heat gun.. so, just to fix a laptop that is not starting up... not worth to buy one unit. because i never know if it will be fix or not..
    you video is very good.. detailed and actual. thanks appreciate your effort and time.
    btw, the laptop that i mentioned , it powered on but no beep, no post, no display.. hardisk spins like it is reading data.. (this laptop has got totally no led indicator at all, but power on led avail..
    model is samsung NP270E5U. i believe is quite an old laptop, but my friend like to use it, so she refuse to just buy a new one.
    i oped the whole thing up, remove the ram, hdd, screen connector.. battery.. also tried to discharge the electricity inside by pressing the power button without power feed and battery.. but still doesn't boot up.
    then i gave up. put everything back. and when i just anyhow press the power button again, and immediately with the function buttons.. i can't remember which exactly function button i pressed, but i know i pressed F12, then F2 ....etc.. the laptop just suddenly jump up to life.. and boot into windows.
    any idea how to go about making it works ?
    appreciate it.
    thanks

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy

      andrew ysk So when you put everything back together you got it to boot up? If that's the case then that's great. On a few occasions I've had a computer that would not give video and just by taking everything apart and putting it back together it started working. When this happens it's difficult to know why. Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

    • @andrewyek
      @andrewyek 6 лет назад +1

      Hii Michael,
      yes, it did boot up , but only once.
      then it don't boot up anymore..
      do you have any idea what could be the problem since it can boot up.. once (thats when i randomly pressed the function keys.. trying to get into bios.. thinking the display is not good..
      i would like to connect the laptop to external screen, but apparently i only have a lcd tv with scart connector.. no VGA port.. it does have HMDI, but i believe HMDI always says no signal at the initial boot of laptop.. until it is well inside the windows environment.

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  6 лет назад

      andrew ysk difficult to say why it only boot at once. You might try the computer with just one ram stick and then swap it out for the other one to see if it's a problem with the ram. If that's not it it's almost certainly something with the motherboard. Take a look at the motherboard and get a model number on it and do a search for that on eBay and see how much it will be. Very often laptop motherboards are only about 50 bucks.

    This is an old thread but I have a unique problem but similar. I will try for some of your expert advice since nobody seems to post on this exactly the same as my problem. I have an older 2005 NX9030 Compaq notebook. Recently the laptop's screen started a type of rolling pixelating and would go blank occasionally. Not black but it seems the inverter is working since I can change the brightness of the screen but only the whiteness since the actual picture stopped with the rolling pixelating and now is just blank. I should point out early on just tapping around the computer would bring back the picture for a while but now that doesn't help anymore.
    I can plug a VGA monitor in and works just fine. I can deduce I have either a problem with the laptop screen or the onboard graphics chip has partially disconnected from the board. I tried taking the battery out and hitting the power button for 60 sec. with no power since that is some people's suggestion but no success. My question is there a program that will test if the screen is damaged or the GPU chip? I have used several old computer programs that test the computer like Sandra and they say the graphics are fine. I know VGA is analog and the laptop screen is digital like DVI (I think it is anyways). Is that what it is the digital part of the chip is disconnected but a test program wouldn't know if the output is disconnected but is still functioning? I really don't want to reflow the GPU but I will if someone is sure that would help. Buying a new monitor and then finding it's not the monitor would suck. The internal connection to the board is good. Any suggestions to pinpoint the problem?

  • @sfcoawol6273
    @sfcoawol6273 6 лет назад +1

    this is defiantly a temporary fix. I've seen proof that these chips will react the same way just by simple heating them to 100c - 120c which is obviously way below melting point. and its because the chip itself is faulty. when you heat them up they expand on the inside and whatever is broken can shift its position to work again, (for a little time then it will get out of place again a cease to operate)

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  6 лет назад +2

      That may be true in some situations but I've fixed several computers this way and they are still working years later.

  • @Swenser
    @Swenser 5 лет назад

    there is the argument that its not the reflow of solder that fixes the problem but simply the heat on the structure of the chip because these problems usually reoccur and some say a lower then melting temp of solder placed on the chip can solve the problem too. I'd try a lower heat first and see how it responds before going to the higher temps for solder reflow if not for the only reasons to see if it was solder problem or chip problem.

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  5 лет назад

      Trying a lower temperature first doesn't make sense to me in the real world. You would have to reflow or heat the processor to a lower temperature and reassemble the computer to see if it worked. Why not heat the processor to the point where the solder reflows? You're only doing it once that way. Who cares if it's the internal structure or the broken solder links? The bottom line is you just want it to work. Why run the risk od doing it twice?

    • @Swenser
      @Swenser 5 лет назад

      @@MichaelTheComputerGuy the risk will be worth knowing if you've fixed the solder joints permanently or if the chip will have a reoccurring problem. If that info is not important then I agree, do the full heat reflow and take the gamble with knowing the reliability.

    Hello, Michael! I'll use your instructions to repair a Dell with a 630m. Louis Rossmann (the Apple guy) mentioned some nVidia chips will work again after heating above 120°C. I'll try your reflow, though. How long from did you take to go from room temp to 220 degrees, how long did you stay on 220 and how long you took to remove the air? Thanks!

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  4 года назад +2

      A few minutes for each step is good. As long as you're doing it go to 220c.

  • @CBTalon97
    @CBTalon97 6 лет назад +4

    By bringing your PCB/chip/solder up to only 220 degrees, you're not going to achieve a proper solder joint. If the solder balls are typical SAC305 alloy, reaching the 217-220C melting point isn't enough to actually achieve a proper solder joint. You need to hit around 235 for 40-60 seconds. What might be buying you some leniency here is that the solder paste that was used on the PCB during assembly may have had a much lower melting point than 220. Otherwise, this wouldn't work. How are you pre-heating your PCB prior to applying reflow temperatures? No anti-static precautions?

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  6 лет назад

      CBTalon97 In the research I've done 220 degrees is enough to melt the solder. Where are you getting the 235 degree number?

    • @CBTalon97
      @CBTalon97 6 лет назад +1

      Michael Cooper that's a typical peak temperature required to achieve a proper solder joint. It's dependant on the type of alloy being used. Usually for about 30-60 seconds over 220. Too long and you'll see very grainy solder joints, too short and you get cold solder and a poor inter-metallic layer. What may be your saving grace is the fact that the solder paste used during assemly along with with the SAC305 balls is from a lower melting point alloy. This will result in a lower melting point for thr combined alloy. If you find a datasheet for any given solder paste you can see the reflow profile characteristics required to get a reliable and proper solder joint and add to long term reliability.
      I still find it impressive that folks like yourself are finding success with home made solutions. I'm just trying to be constructive as I'm in the industry.

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  6 лет назад

      CBTalon97 I appreciate the feedback. I'll try raising up the temperature to the point you recommend and see if the success rate or duration of fix increases.

    • @trevorbrummel6562
      @trevorbrummel6562 6 лет назад +1

      Michael Cooper I'm also curious what your actual temperatures are i.e. surface and internal. I'd say it's obvious that you're successful in melting the solder, as the chip is now functional, but setting the gun to 220C presumably only sets the output temperature. Unless it also monitors the temperature of whatever it's pointing at, you are only hitting an approximate value.
      This is of particular interest to me as I am preparing to repair my own GPU using this method (GTX 760, and yes, I know that I should start at 150C for that one), but I am using a cheap heat gun in conjunction with an infrared thermometer. I've got a pretty repeatable setup on my bench for distance from the work vs surface temp, but I thought I'd ask here to get your thoughts before i take the plunge.
      Great vids and super helpful BTW. Keep Up the good work!

    (which is not available in my region)

    • @Christopher_T_Paul
      @Christopher_T_Paul 5 лет назад +2

      The problem with copper shims is that they are electrically conductive. If you take a look around the GPU, you will see many other small components. Should the shim touch any of these, then it will fry your GPU.
      Thermal pads and most thermal paste isnt conductive, so its far safer.
      If heat reduction was a concern, I would use a thermal pad branded "Thermal Grizzly", its an amazing product and is 100% safe and very effective. I don't know of any PC tech that would dream of using a copper shim.

    • @BenInSeattle
      @BenInSeattle 4 года назад

      @@Christopher_T_Paul Given that this is a short term fix until the GPU overheats again, it seems like the best thermal conduction possible would be wanted, even if there was a chance of shorting. Once the shim is locked down by the heat sink, it's not going to move. If a technician is careful, would you not think that the risk of frying the GPU is very small compared to the almost certain death of the GPU by overheating?

      Maybe you are over thinking it. It could be a good old screen fault.
      Try connecting the laptop to a monitor or TV and see if you get a picture.
      The inverter is for an LCD screen (not LED) and usually sits just underneath the screen and is about 3-4 inches long. If it was an inverter fault, you usually see a very, very feint image on the screen. Shining a torch may help you see the image better. The inverter just controls the backlight of the screen.

      @@MichaelTheComputerGuy Yes to properly reball a large bga like cpu takes very expensive equipment. Watch Louis Rossman video about his $3K bga reball equipment. Small bga chips can be reballed using hot air station, but even then it's hit and miss. Of course shabby technicians claim they can do large bga chip reaball by hand, but the result is something Louis would laugh at. According to Louis 95% of money is made by circuit repair and only 5% require bga reball. Bga reball is often a time consuming rabbit hole and it's least favored repair for Louis Rossmann.

    Hi, I think this video should have been split into two. The first would cover the newbie stuff about general diagnosis tips, and the second would cover the chip-reflow fix proper. Note that I found this video when checking about diagnosis for computers that won't start: this came up via autoplay.
    I gave the video a thumb's up nonetheless, as you covered good tips (e.g., screw placement near components during the disassembly) and the reflow process was quite interesting. However, I was disappointed that so little time was spent on diagnosing the graphics card issue, compared to the newbie-oriented computer-won't-start diagnosis at the beginning. That and the disassembly took about 20 minutes. (I was expecting something like a multimeter-type diagnosis to show that the graphics chip was not getting proper signals.)
    By the way, is there a way to get the transcription added to the video? That would be helpful for review, as the reflow part mentioned a lot of terms I am not familiar with (such as the fluid to loosen the solder).

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  5 лет назад

      It's possible if you have the right equipment. Doing it to like I'm doing here is not good enough to actually remove and replace the chip. You would also have to make sure that the motherboard can handle the new chip.

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  5 лет назад +1

      @@RafaelSoaresP That is completely different from reflowing a chip. You really need specialized equipment to get that done. Not something you would do at home. If you only need to do one you're better off taking it to a repair place that can do a component level chip replacement. It's most likely cheaper just to buy new motherboard. It may not be as each if that's at fault. It maybe some other components on the motherboard. There are places that specialize in motherboard component level repair. Do a Google search for exactly that component-level motherboard repair and you should find a few places.

    Hello! I have a question, if my laptop keeps turning on and of f repeatedly every 3-4 seconds could the issue also be the graphics chip? I’ve done the same test you did at the beginning of the video. It’s not the RAM, battery nor hard disk. Would appreciate your feedback thank you!

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  6 лет назад

      That doesn't sound like an issue with the graphics chip. Most likely it's something else failed on the motherboard though. Do a search for the model of the laptop and motherboard to find pricing. You might also look for a model number on the motherboard itself to search for.

    • @LooisAngel
      @LooisAngel 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply! I have looked at the mother lard and it ranges from 50-100 dollars. What causes this issue? I would like to know as a future reference and avoid doing the same problem. Let me guess overheating? Lol. Although a quick side note, at first it would turn on for 2 seconds and turn off. Then later on it turned on for 3-4 seconds and turned off. Seemed like it stayed on for a longer period of time. Could o be mistaken and it has something to do with the battery?

    • @MichaelTheComputerGuy
      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  6 лет назад +1

      You can test that by disconnecting the battery. The system will get power for the AC adapter. There are component level repair places that may be able to fix what is wrong with the board but it would be more expensive than just buying another for $50.

    Good job. Now where are you located, I want to be a client too. Black screen, I hear the hard drive and fan. Caps lock and number locks LEDs blink every 3 seconds indefinitely. Last thing I did was try to upgrade the RAM, never came back to life. I've tried everything. HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop dv4-2045dx. I kkep thinking I killed the motherboard by not wearing an anti-static strap. It was running the day before fine that's why I can't see if being the chip, it never ran the day I tried to swap the RAM. I can't see it overheating, certainly not that day, it was never turned on.

      @MichaelTheComputerGuy  4 года назад

      If that happened after you tried upgrading the ram take out the ram upgrade and put it back the way that it was. It should work. At that point you can try maybe one extra stick of RAM and then the other to try and see which one is causing the problem. It's rare but it could also just be an incompatibility between the ram you're adding and your computer.

    • @dannyr403
      @dannyr403 4 года назад

      That was the first thing I did was swap the RAM back, nothing. Tried removing the CMOS for an hour. Tried discharging the capacitors with the power button long press with the CMOS, battery and power supply removed. Tried running just the motherboard alone with only the RAM, power button and CMOS installed. Tried an external monitor after reassembly. Did not try the motherboard alone with an external monitor though, probably should have, didn't think of it at the time. Tested the power supply, it's good 19.3 volts. The CMOS was 2.89V, a little low, but funtioning. Tried with just the AC adapter, with just the batter, with both. Tried the new RAM, the old RAM, the RAM before the old RAM. Now I have it all warapped up in blankets and turned on with a thermometer against the fan output area trying to heat it up to see if it's the graphics chip.

I did try finding a motherboard online but not a hell of a lot of luck yet.

    • @dannyr403
      @dannyr403 4 года назад

      Just a quick update ~ I wrapped it up in blankets turned on so it couldn't breath and left a cooking thermometer against the fan output vent and measured 150 degrees Fahrenheit on the air coming out of that vent for 2 to 2.5 hours. I can only assume the AMD chip was close to 200 to 225 if the air coming out was 150, but I have no real way of knowing that. I put my hand on the keyboard and determined it was hot as a mofo, and I said okay, that's enough of that! It was real hot, like dangerously hot. Like hot enough to cook an egg in about 15 minutes if I left one on there or hot enough to kill something else. Gave it about 5 minutes to cool off and powered it on, the screen immediately came back to life. Said something about Bios and CMOS and resetting something or other, couldn't get my camera out fast enough before it went away. I got the idea though, I unplugged the CMOS battery a few times and it's resetting the BIOS I assume. Anyway, didn't seem like it was doing anything after that and I got nervous. I was probably just impatient and I shut it down. Turned it on again and Windows 10 began booting up immediately. Just to test fate, because I'm a dumbass like that, I shut it down, pulled the battery, pulled the AC cord, discharged the capacitors holding the power button for 15 - 20 seconds, and swapped the 1 GB RAM stick that was still in there for a 2 GB which is what got me in this mess to begin with, or so I thought. She came right up and has been running fine for the last hour showing 4 GB of RAM now. So... what do you think?... bad AMD? ... Need a new chip, and / or to be reballed or reflowed? I don't know, you tell me. I opened up System Information and this is what it read ~ AMD Turion(tm) II Dual-Core Mobile M500 2200 MHz 2 Core(s) 2 Logical Processor(s) I don't know what that means. Might as well be Hieroglyphics... What do you think is my next step here? Give it to the techs and say change the AMD chip? Run it until it dies then try to reflow the chip after letting some liquid flux drip back there? I don't even know what the hell it is. All I know is I intentionally made a some chip get dangerously hot for 2 hours and now it's on after 2 days of black screen.
