CLARISS, have you seen Dumb and Dumber?
the mask was a horror comic about what happens if you give people toon powers and remove their inhibitions. this movie was meant to be a dark horror movie to complement the nightmare on elm street franchise. than jim carrey tried out and they decided to rewrite the entire movie
Tex Avery is the cartoonist most emulated through the mask.
Did you know Jim Carrey was only supposed to use those teeth temporarily, but he was able to talk with them throughout the whole movie? That's serious talent!
Did you know that Jim Carrey improvised the iconic line “Sssmokin’”? The line in the script was “Sssnazzy”
I like that they gave a reason as to why The Mask acts like a cartoon, because Stanley enjoys them and watches them. It's a small thing, but one thing that makes this movie so good.
Exactly. It’s basically something to set up exactly what kind of person Stanley is. Then when he’s the Mask, he suddenly turns all of his exaggeration up to 180. And when he becomes the Mask, it doesn’t feel entirely different because he was already eccentric. But he basically goes from eccentric, to hyper! 😂
Fun fact:
The comics the movie is adapted from is extremely dark and brutal.
His cartoon-logic powers don't extend to the people around him, so his victims suffer gruesome torture and death.
He's not even called the Mask in the comics, but rather the Big-Head Killer.
Stanley doesn't even have that much long time in the mask, he gets killed by his girlfriend for being a useless manchild and she takes over the mask for quite some time
Thanks, idk it was based on a comic.
The thing with the Mask which I think gets forgotten a lot is that he, as a character, is not SUPPOSED to be particularly sympathetic. He's Stanley's Id personified; he's every crazy thing that Stanley's ever wanted to do or say - he has no self-restraint whatsoever. Stanley's the sympathetic one - the Mask is just pure wackiness and self-indulgence, which, yeah, often doesn't make for the nicest of people.
Hell, in the comic book source material, the Mask is a murderous psychopath who kills people for shits and giggles.
Apparently in the movie, the mask only works at night. But in the cartoon, it works any time.
1994 was THE year of Jim Carrey's greatest roles. "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" was released in Jan 4., "The Mask" was July 28, and "Dumb and Dumber" was Dec. 6. All three of these movies did over 706 million in box office. Not bad for a guy who was in "Earth Girls are Easy" as well as bit parts in two Clint Eastwood movies, "The Dead Pool" and "Pink Cadillac".
He was credited as "James Carrey" in The Dead Pool as I recall. I wonder why he changed it?
@@thedukeofnuts he was James Carrey on In Living Color too
the thing about this movie was at the time movies were on a big kick of The regular Guy doesn't get the Hot Girl. And The Mask deconstructed it perfectly with the reporter lady and Cameron Diaz.
I always got the feeling that somebody at the studio said we need to make a movie where Jim Carrey can just be a cartoon character. And they pulled it off magnificently, there was just enough story to carry and tie together the comedy effects. Mt fave part was where he played the lusty frenchman... Pepe le Pew to perfection, up to and including Tina's reaction, the cat trying to get away from the lovesick skunk.
Chuck Russell--the director himself--said that! He specifically wanted to make it a comedy when New Line only saw potential in the property to become a new Freddy Krueger/Elm Street.
I have to say Milo really stole the show! What a good boy!! 🐕 🐕
I just LOVE how the majority of 'The Mask Scenes' is based on Chuck Jones. I know the mid 80s to mid 90s is mostly him....
He improvised 85 percent of his scenes
The actress who played Peggy (the reporter) here played maid Marian in 'Robin Hood Men In Tights.' Which...if you haven't seen it that's a priority. One of Mel Brook's best works in my opinion. The guy who plays Robin Hood is the same guy who played Westly in 'The Princess Bride.' Plus Andre the Giant is pretty amazing in it. Andre was super proud of his role in that movie.
Hell yeah!
Robin wood with kevin cotsner is a must
Ok little information dump here, The Mask is a comic book character published by Dark Horse Comics, the original comic unlike the movie was extremely dark and gory as hell, the movie was made more pg so it could attract more audiences and because of Jim Carrey, though this version is god tier just because of him, and the looney tunes references and styles was already a huge part of the comics.
It makes me wanna see a requel where it's a slapstick horror comedy with creative gore.
This movie had a lot of special effects but I remember the director saying they managed to save about $1M in special effects just because the stuff Jim Carrey could do with his body.
Such a fun superhero comedy film!
Before Jim Carrey played the role of Stanley Ipkiss, John Ritter, Steve Martin, Keanu Reeves, Robin Williams, Matthew Broderick, Mike Myers, Martin Short, and Rick Moranis were considered for the role.
Before Cameron Diaz was cast as Tina Carlyle, Vanessa Williams, Tia Carrere, Vanessa Angel, Anna Nicole Smith, and Kristy Swanson were considered for the part.
Jack Nicholson, Rupert Everett, Willem Dafoe, Dennis Hopper and Robert DeNiro were almost cast as the villain.
I’m very glad that they didn’t go with any big actors to play the villain like all the ones you just said. I’m glad they just gave the role to a small character actor like Peter Greene because this was “all eyes on Jim Carrey” he was becoming a huge star so all attention should go to him only lol
John Ritter as The Mask. LOL. R.I.P. But the movie probably would have failed!
🤔 This "cartoon comedy" needed someone who could combine zaniness, charisma, and physical comedy. Of the list you gave, only Robin Williams might have been able to compete with Carrey -- but, at a decade older than Carrey's early 30s, Williams wasn't as good a fit for the roll. And I honestly can't imagine any of those other women being as good a fit as Diaz.
@@bigdream_dreambig YES… which is why Robin Williams is the only other comedian I like besides Jim Carrey.
No other comedian comes close to those 2… Eddie Murphy is the only other comedian I’d pick besides those 2. As for Cameron Diaz… this is the only movie she looked good in
@@EddBanshee fun fact: the actress that played Peggy Brant in the movie was John Ritter’s wife in real life
My God I LOVE This movie! One of the many movies that got me into voice acting when I was a kid, and this one is still my favorite to this day.
Earlier today I was watching a reaction to Terminator, and said to myself, Terminator, Predator, and Total Recall were all good Arnold movies, but they would have been good movies no matter who the star was: Arnold just bumped it up a notch. But replace Jim Carrey in The Mask, Ace Ventura, or even Liar Liar and the movies wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Jim Carey makes those movies: the fit is perfect, and no other actor could substitute for him.
That’s because he is one of the best entertainers and/or actor of all time, anyone who thinks otherwise is STUPID
Liar Liar more than the others because I'd say that it's the only one which could've had a different lead, but it would've been *so* generic if it was. It's not bad, but it is very by the numbers. It's a safe, middle-brow comedy film premise for a safe, middle-brow comedy film. Carrey leading it gives it all the personality it wouldn't have had without him, and while there are plenty of actors who could've led it, st the time, I can't think of anyone who could've done it better or even equally.
Right, imagine if they'd given the role to someone else, like Jamie Kennedy or something. I can't even picture that.
I couldnt deal when you kept eye contact with us/the camera as you chair sank Clariss😂great reaction as usual one of my favourite comedys and Jim carrey movies.I'm pretty sure this was Cameron Diaz's first movie
The fact you knew that Sally Field Oscar reference is amazing. Although not sure you got the "it was the one-armed man!" so if not watch The Fugitive with Harrison Ford. Its solid.
To my know, this film is a more accurate adaptation of the Jekyll and Hyde character and story than most others.
This, and "Liar Liar" are his two best comedic roles. For anyone interested, the Pig Latin the cops are speaking: "Ixnay, he's otgay a ungay" = "Nix, he's got a gun," "Eesay ouyay aterlay" = "See you later."
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
The Mask
Dumb and Dumber
Liar Liar… those are the best Jim Carrey movies
Good one!
The lore is the power of the mask is to make anything he wishes into reality created by the God of mischief, Loki. Very powerful!
It brings out his inner desires and brings them into reality and even others are affected by its influence.
So, wrong hands...very bad. But in the hands of a dork or a clown, everything is just mischievous!
Fun Fact: The Mask movie is actually based on a comic series from Dark Horse Comics and it was similar to the movie but a lot more dark and gruesome!
This is the most iconic Jim Carrey movie of all time he was the king of the 90s
The mask transformation is my favorite of all time
Love you and your reaction
I like this movie a lot!!! It's so funny haha!!! Great reaction!!
Holy shit, "the break drums are shot and you need a new transmission" is from the Mask? I've been saying that for so long I forgot it's origins and was blown away to see it in this video!
such a goofy movie, love it.
Ben Stein has performed his own stunts in every movie he's been in.
Ben Stein did stunts?? This movie and "Ferris Beuler's Day Off" are the only movies I remember him in IRL… so I don't remember him doing anything that requiring stunts…
This is one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies!🤣
Milo is the secret star and showstealer in this movie
love the sfx make up on Jim Carrey in this so much it's shapes so well around him to be able to still have so much freedom with his expressions and l love the art for the comic for The Mask, as always glad you enjoyed and have a great day fam
Did anyone else notice that when Dorian first put on the mask one of his men to his right(out left) repositions himself when the light flashed over him just before Dorian straightened himself?
33:46.. The guy playing Dorian may not have spooked ya in this one, Clariss--But the weirdo he played in "Pulp Fiction" sure will!! "The Mask" was a BIG hit..Carrey's rubber-faced and body rapid-fire style of comedy was perfect for the role. There was even a 3-year cartoon series run and 5-year comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics!!
My favorite mask run was a Mini series (it lasted 4 issues). It was the DC/Darkhorse crossover where the joker got the mask.
"Do Looney Tunes have a hand in this movie?"
It's basically self-promotional product placement. The Looney Tunes are owned by Warner Bros. The Mask (1994) is from New Line Cinema, which is a Time-Warner studio.
Fun Fact: This was Cameron Diaz's film debut which I didn't know until a while back 😃💚
I love how she's trying to act like she never saw this movie lol
i was 3 years old when this movie came out.
If it actually was a william Shatner mask painted green that would have been great it would have linked the mcu to the Halloween universe to the Star Trek verse
Always a pleasure to see your reactions to films Clariss! Thank you for this delightful video! :) I hope you're well!
In a deleted scene, after Dorian puts on the mask, He just straight up murders Peggy by tossing her in the printing press. Damn.
Now that you have had the steak that is "The Mask", go check out the sticking hamburger that is "Son of the Mask" It's one of those films like "Santa Claus and at the ice cream Bunny", "The Room", "Plan 9 from outer space", etc., that is so bad, it's good.
Love you 💛 and your input on every movie :)
"What happened? What did she say? What did you say? What did she say to what you said?"
"I couldn't say anything."
"Not only that, you sharpened your ballpoint pen!"
3:17 0_0
The Mystery Men: get a movie
The Mask: gets a movie
The Flaming Carrot: "Ut!"
Usually first script is written then the actor is hired, but in this case first Jim was signed and then script was written
Growing up I loved the Mask and the cartoon Freakaoid (by Spielberg). The two characters when combined were basically me. lol. Well minus the bad stuff. I'm zany, weird, funny, and a romantic. That said there are other Maks movies after this one but they aren't very good sadly.
Yeah Freakazoid was a really funny zany cartoon from the 90s. I didn’t watch it alot but I remember how funny it was
The cops had the Storm Troopers firearms training.
I always felt the alley scene in bruce almighty was a throwback to the alley scene in this
23:44 At least I know now that I'm not the only one who used those lines and got hit in the crotch for it😁
RIP Richard Jeni.
Clariss Jim Something else 🤣🤣💯, Now talk about Rubber Face, this is a Classic, Thanks,.
Cameron Diaz was 22 in this movie.
Doyle and Milo MVPs lol
A warning for you Clariss...IF you decide to watch the sequel, 'Son Of The Mask' you need to know that Rotten Tomatoes give it a *very generous* 6%
I saw parts of it. The jokes were pretty infantile.
-Can I see your ID?
*pulls out an IV apparatus from his pocket*
It's like wtf just stop 🤦♂️
@@Gurra88 It's widely regarded as not one of the worst sequels ever made, but the worst film period.
She's the first reactor I seen watch this movie and be against Ipkiss. Wow
I don't think you can forget those pajamas
YESSSSSSS LOVE THIS MOVIE !!!! Also you have became one of my fav youtubers. Keep on keeping on!!! Also wasnt this Cameron Diaz breakout/Debut?
hilarious reacts to the mask [1994] film - first time watch !!!!
Btw love your natural look. True beauty.
This was a movie only Jim Carrey could pull off. Unfortunately he's not in "The Son of the Mask"
You aren't wearing any makeup in this video and you are so perfectly gorgeous as ever I love you
I've never been to a club where you had to wait in line and haggle with the doorman to get in, is this a Hollywood invention or do places like that exist?
Saw one in NYC. It was the ballroom of an old hotel. The theme was Edwardian era, circa 1920s. The Titanic survivors stayed there. We already had one of the captain's cabins, so we got in without having to wait. Totally unexpected, and we were dressed like ragamuffins from a show. People in line were flabbergasted. 🤣
We need a tater r version of the same movie that is just as violent as the comic.
This is a really great movie and I'm glad they never made a sequel to it. Ever. There's absolutely no reason to double check this statement.
Fun movie and fun reaction. Thanks.
Great reaction I think you would really like Liar Liar wit Jim Carey
The best Cameron Diaz has ever looked.
Watching this outro I love your hair curls you are so adorable
Milo is everything...
Do you still do acting in any short films & such ? & I really love how Jim Carry just puts everything he has into his performance his body language & facial expressions 😂reminds me of how Christopher Reeve would do his Clark Kent for Superman he physically changed his posture & voice & attitude it’s amzing what actors can do so many hours of work
If you haven’t seen The Majestic, that’s a really underrated, Frank Capra style movie. Capra made It’s A Wonderful Life.
PLEASE STOP SAYING UNDERRATED… every single person on RUclips literally overuses that word and misuses it.
“Underrated” is literally unusable now
The reason the Majestic didn’t get any credit or attention was because it was a flop.
If you wanna talk about dramatic Jim Carrey movies then look at Truman Show. That’s the movie that EVERYBODY thinks of when on the subject of Jim Carrey
Me personally, the Majestic was a great plot line and story but the movie itself was boring as hell, honestly
@@nsasupporter7557 which is why I didn’t recommend it, but thank you for your participation.
You should watch Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 🙂
her sinster smirk @ 10:30-10:37 bbd.......
Animal house dude didn't make much but I likehim as a detective.
You should watch Son of the Mask
The comic this is based on is way darker
why do i get the feeling this movie influenced the Grinch movie
If you think about how uh.... "pervy" Charlie can be. It's then scary to know he possibly got the mask at the end.
You gotta film a reaction to how Jim plays as the Grinch in "Dr Seuss: How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on HBOMAX
And do another reaction to how he plays as Ebenezer Scrooge in "Disney's A Christmas Carol" on Disney+🎄😁⚡
Love this movie 😂❤
This is based on dark horse comics
Amy done locked in turning in Stanley she didn't need to give us those 2 speeches about how nice Stanley is, just take ya money we can all understand that but lead him on like that that's very karenish
I've never lived in an apartment building, why would ahallway have carpet? That many people walking through that carpet would be ruined in no time.
Very pretty clariss :)
37:11 "I mean, it's so dumb." Are you serious?!? Compared to most Jim Carrey comedies, this movie has a genius-level I.Q.!
Awesome video 🙌🏽✌🏽
The Mask is a great comedy and yes, please react to My Best Friend’s Wedding.
Two things.
1: I love your makeup in the opening of this video.
2: One of my favorite Jim Carrey movies (another is How The Grinch Stole Christmas). He's got some soul for singing. Only Jim Carrey can do justice to the green face and horse teeth. Damn you Jamie Kennedy, for giving us the rancid garbage pile called "The Son Of The Mask".
Havia me esquecido o quão bom era esse filme. Ver ele em outra idioma fez ele se tornar 10/10
I love the title to this! Jim Carrey really is the master!!!
Can you please react on RRR,KGF 1-2 and EEGA movie i would love to watch it with you and to see your reaction on it ❤️❤️✌🏻
I agree. Milo was the MVP.
MVP = Most Valuable Pet?? 😂😂
Cameron Diaz's debut role that got her type cast as eye candy and ultimately the reason she wanted to quit acting
10:30 says everything lol
I big fan of u
Please react to the second one called son of the mask
Slapstick with an overpowered lovable dog... How can you go wrong.
Easy, make a sequel
These were the days Jim Carrey was pulling down a cool 20 million per pic, and besides this, and Ace Ventura and Dumb And Dumber, the dude was making a FORTUNE.
Fun fact: this was Cameron Diaz’s first movie ever
Awe Jim Carrey …. One of my favourites. And from near Toronto too
