Right. Jeff Daniels was and is primarily known for his dramatic roles, but he got a few comedic roles in the 90s because of this movie. I remember he did a courtroom comedy with Michael Richards and Charlize Theron a few years after this that I found quite funny as a teenager.

Jeff Daniels balances out Jim Carrey who can get too over the top. For a successful comedy you need a straight man (Jeff). There are nice serious moments in between them, grounding the movie and allowing us to buy into the story.

In high school, everyone would always talk about this movie and how funny it was. My older sister who usually never goes for stuff like this even saw it and told me I had to see it but I completely missed the boat on it. Despite having a few years to rent it after it came out on video, I never saw it. Then one Sunday at my job at the video store, my boss was talking about it. When I mentioned that I hadn't seen it, he was shocked. He went out to the floor, got a copy and stuck it in the vcr and from that day almost 25 years ago, it's been one of my favorites. I just wish I'd listened to everyone and seen it when it first came out.

That whole “We landed on the moon!” bit wasn’t even in the script. That was all Jim in the moment. The Farrelly Brothers by that time knew better than to cut the camera when it came to Jim. So they always kept the camera rolling just to see what he’ll do or say. Same with Tom Shadyac, the director of the Ace Ventura movies, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty. He also made it a point to never cut the camera on Jim. A lot of his best gags and jokes would tend to happen past the point of when they’re suppose to cut.

  • @extantsanity

Fun fact: Jeff Daniels did this movie for a measly salary of *_$50,000_* while Jim Carrey made *$7,000,000.* The studio wanted another big name comedian to play opposite Carrey, and the lowball offer was meant to dissuade Daniels, who wanted to break from type and do some comedy. Daniels' manager thought it would be career suicide, so he didn't try to negotiate and begged his client not to take the job. Daniels took the job anyway, and the studio was STILL so down on him that they did his first several scenes without Carrey so they could re-cast him without any reshoots. He was basically auditioning for a job he already had! Carrey was super supportive of his co-star, though, and encouraged the studio to stick with him. After the first couple of scenes that Daniels did, Carrey assured him that he killed it. Upon review, the studio realized Daniels actually had the chops for the movie and the chemistry with Carrey to make it work. And the rest is history.
The two have had lifelong respect for each other ever since.
Edit: Oh, yeah, and at the same time, Carrey was on his meteoric rise during filming of this movie. He initially asked for 2M and the studio refused. Then Ace Ventura came out, and they went back into negotiations, with Carrey taking 7M instead of the 2 he originally asked for. His take was nearly half of the movie's entire budget, at $16M. Made sense that they wanted Jeff Daniels on the cheap, but they weren't going to get another A-list comedian for $50k, either.
Crazy how the world turns out sometimes, innit?

You just can't contain a guy like Jim! Many of his best scenes are improvised and memorable lines are often completely spontaneous. Remember the "most annoying sound in the world" from this film? You could probably tell this wasn't in the script by the genuinely horrified look on Jeff Daniel's face as Jim leans over and lets him hear it. It was off the cuff in typical Carrey style. And in the bar scene in Aspen, the line "No way... that's great. We've landed on the moon!" was also made up by Jim right on the spot when he saw the framed newspaper.
Some say Jim hasn't taken any dramatic roles lately due to the poor box-office performance of his previous ones. But apparently, he will only perform in a movie that has a completely positive message. He has struggled with depression, and due to his own personal belief system doesn't want to project anything negative.

27:28 I'm glad you gave a shout out to the intelligence behind the writing and acting in this movie, because, like you said at the end, something like this really is difficult to pull off. There are so many other "dumb guy" buddy comedies that didn't work out (lookin' at you, "Dude, Where's My Car?") because it isn't nearly as easy as people think to make something hilarious. Making people compellingly stupid -- i.e. NOT losing the audience -- ironically requires a lot of intellect and wit (ahem, _rapier_ wit, even). Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey pull off making all KINDS of random ass things much funnier than they have any right to be ("Big Gulps, huh? Welp, see ya later!") and it's really a testament to the talent on this project.

The casting of the guy who played Sea Bass, the truck driver, seems so random to me. He was played by Cam Neely, then a forward for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. He would reprise the role in the sequel "Dumb and Dumber To" in 2014. The Farrelly brothers (Peter and Bobby), who were producers of this film, must have been fans of his or something, considering that they were from a nearby New England state, Rhode Island. Neely would also pop up in another Farrelly brothers film, "Me, Myself & Irene", in 2000, which also happened to star Jim Carrey.

    • @bystandah9626

The Farrelly's are fans of all the Boston teams and they try to feature a former player in a cameo role in each of their films if possible. Roger Clemens had a minor appearance in Kingpin. They originally wanted to get Drew Bledsoe for a small appearance in There's Something About Mary, but either he wasn't available or interested, so we got Brett Favre instead. Fever Pitch, of course, featured a few of the players from the 2004 WS Champion Red Sox. For Dumb and dumber, I'm glad they got Neely in a cameo because he's my all-time favorite hockey player and Bruin.

I would’ve liked it better at the end if after Lloyd says "Do you realize what you’ve DONE?!", they start running towards the bus, then the credits start rolling as it shows them getting on then driving off, clarifying they’re not ALL that dumb and finally got their big break.
