      It was literally the first draft. The writer wrote that thinking that they'd replace it with something better later. Bill Pullman delivered and they left it in the movie.

    Jurassic Park Jeff Goldblum: "Must...go faster..."🦖
    Independence Day Jeff Goldblum: "Must GO FASTER!!" 👽
    I say this every time because it's still hilarious to me. I truly believe Goldblum is not an actor, he's just being Jeff Goldblum caught on camera. A unique being.

    This flick was one of the major theatrical experiences of my childhood. I remember reading from the major magazines that this was the Star Wars experience of the 90s, and they weren’t wrong. This one has it all: the perfect mix of practical and CG, humor, drama, and action.
    As someone that’s done some programming, the end is completely ridiculous and would never work, but it oddly doesn’t take away from my ability to enjoy it.

    • @spazbog123
      @spazbog123 Год назад

      They deleted the scene that explains why the ending was plausible - we invented (stole) the computer tech from their crashed ship in area 51. Knowing that our computers come from studying theirs makes it plausible (but still far fetched) that we could interface with their computers.

    • @neutrino78x
      @neutrino78x 10 месяцев назад

      @@spazbog123 Don't even need a deleted scene, the whole thing with Area 51 and how they had been studying the tech implies that they eventually figured out how to interface physically to their computers 🙂

    • @neutrino78x
      @neutrino78x 10 месяцев назад

      "As someone that’s done some programming, the end is completely ridiculous and would never work"
      I wouldn't agree with that. They figured out how to interface to the computers before Jeff Goldblum's character, so all he had to do was write a virus for the alien OS, which man already understood. In theory, as long as you have access to the OS to figure out how to write software for it, you should be able to create a virus/malware that turns off the shield. There's plenty of malware for Red Hat Linux and FreeBSD, both highly stable systems. No reason you couldn't write it for an alien OS.
      Now, if they didn't know anything about the alien computers beforehand, then yeah, I agree, not plausible (at least, not in the time depicted on screen). But Bren Spiner's guys had been working with the alien computers since 1947. 🙂

    I think there's more thought put into this movie than people give it credit for. Probably the best thing the movie does is build tension. The first part/act of the movie does such a great job building the tension of questioning who these aliens are, how they're coordinating their ships, and whether or not they're hostile. Not only that, but you get to meet all the main characters, from President Whitmore, to Steve Hiller, to David. There's a lot of characters to keep track of, but I think the movie does a good job setting up each of their arcs and stories, so that by the end when everything comes to a head in battle, and their efforts to take down the ship, everything feels earned. More than any other classic blockbuster, this feels like kind of a precursor to the big superhero team movies that we get now, just in concept of setting up a big baddie, and setting up the numerous characters we're gonna follow. Still holds up IMO. And YES, the effects are still great. SOME of the CG definitely looks off (it was the 90s), but the use of miniatures and practical effects are what help sell the destruction and gravity of the situation. The aliens' initial attacks STILL give me chills because of the use of models and miniatures. That practicality goes a long way, that CG (despite the impressive technology) simply can't.

    "Independence Day" is an amazing movie to see in the theater. I saw it on the 4th of July and the theater was packed. "Independence Day" and "Twister" (RIP Bill Paxton) were responsible for reviving the disaster film in the mid to late 90's. However, "Independence Day" was more of an epic event film that came close to 70's classic disaster films like "The Poseidon Adventure", "The Towering Inferno" and maybe even "Airport".

    In honor of your own naturalization, I'd like to point out the subtle casting choice of having Russell K's children be ordinary American kids who just happen to be Latino. The script isn't drawing any attention to the fact they're Latino in any way. They simply present Miguel and his siblings as normal kids and I've always loved the subtle inclusiveness of that. 😊

However critics would not allow them to call the movie Independence Day unless it was set on July 4th. Rather than changing the name of the movie they set it to happen on July 4th which gave Bill Pullman as President Thomas Whitmore an outstanding speech to deliver.

    "Doesn't work like that, but I don't care." Yes! Exactly! It's a fictional movie, not a factual documentary. Too many nowadays seem to have trouble making that distinction. As an old, broken-down ex-screenwriter, one of my first lessons was: Never let the facts get in the way of a good story. If it is good enough, no one will care; if they care, then it wasn't good enough. If you're a storyteller first, the rest will sort itself out. (One of the other first lessons was that character is more important than plot -- but that's a few books worth of discussion.)

    Doctor Okun himself was strange man , brilliant but already little strange, there a tie in Novel that goes into the back story of Doctor Okun and how he became head of Area 51 research department, also threre a novel that tells the story of middle eastern fighter group, that was mixture of British,Iraq and Jews pilots and how they learn to co-exist and work together. if I remember right, while there was a lot of CGI, the destruction scenes incorporated a lot of practical effects. The White House was a scale model filled with bags of flammable liquid, and I think the building miniatures for some of the city destruction shots were mounted sideways so that they would explode in a direction.
    That's an old trick, too, George Lucas and ILM shot model explosions for Star Wars looking *up* at the models, which were inverted, in order to give the impression of zero-gravity.
    Those shots were enhanced with CGI elements, too. I think the exploding helicopter in the white house destruction shot is either CGI or a separate model that was composited in? It's been a long time since I watched any SFX documentaries about this film.

    According to the dvd commentary, Bill Pullman's speech was either improvised or written last minute (I can't remember cuz it's been a long time since I watched it).
    Congratulations on becoming a full citizen ❤

    So happy for you that your officially an American citizen and have all the rights of the people. I actually watched this movie for the first time last night for the 4th of July and so I could watch other people who react to it. And who was the first reaction video that popped up? My favorite reacting actress. Happy Independence Day Clariss 🇺🇸🎉

    I loved this movie so much growing up and always found it funny when the news had to tell the American public not to shoot at the alien spacecraft, as a Brit I think 99% of the British public would have just gone to the pub 🤣🤣

    This is kinda silly movie that I unabashedly love. In the 70s there were lots of ensemble cast disaster movies where the storylines come together. Irwin Allen I think directed some. This is a 90s sci-fi version of that, and Im so here for it.

    This is a movie that I really liked because of all the different stories in a movie and if we come together we can achieve many things.

    Congratulations on becoming a US Citizen. Happy 4th of July! You asked about any speeches from other movies well the speech from Idris Elba in Pacific Rim is pretty good as well. Not sure if you have seen that one or not. If not, I would recommend it even though I am not sure you will like it or not

    A lot of action/disaster movies in the mid to late 90's used minatures and practical effects. The iconic White House destruction scene was all practical with the alien beam, helicopter, and alien ship being the only CGI.

    Brent Spiner who plays dr. Okun is a very versatile Syfy actor he is best known for playing Mr data on Star Trek the Next Generation, where he puts so many different spins on different characters that he plays throughout the series from crazy and evil to gentle loyal and kind

      I’m pretty sure he had a lot to do with the character’s over the top and socially uncomfortable nature. He’s really good at over the top and a little weird. I’m also pretty sure they were looking for over the top and a little weird, judging by his dialog and the fact that they hired him. I kind of adore Brent Spiner.

    This movie will always stick with me, I was fresh out of HS and had enlisted in the Army when I turned 17, I was at Ft. Benning and had just finished up my Basic Training and was about to start AIT, Infantry Training, and they had given us a weekend pass, so this was around the middle of August I believe, and the movie was still in the Theaters. Granted, this was the first media that I had seen in a while but thoroughly loved the movie.

    First of all ¡felicidades! on your citizenship. Also, I appreciated your appreciation of David Arnold’s score. His score for 1998’s Godzilla is hands down the best thing about that movie.

    Great reaction!! The greatest motivational speech is the opening to Patton. The next best is King Théoden's speech for the charge of the Rohirrim in Lord of the Rings.

    The pundits criticizing the Pres at the beginning on TV are from a real PBS show called The McLaughlin Group. It was a political commentary show on weekends. Loved watching it. They always had opposing views on and lots of good banter. John McLaughlin was a boisterous host who really made the show fun and entertaining. The lady in the clip is Eleanor Clift, who always had to shout over the other men to get their attention. She held her own!

    If you're looking for the pre-battle speech that Pullman's was loosely based on, look no further than Henry V's St. Crispin's Day speech. The words are different, but the points both monologues address, and the style of their dramatic build, are essentially identical and equally thrilling.
    Also, just as in ID4, in Henry V the leader delivers his speech and then fights alongside his soldiers rather than watching from the rear.
