I can attest to that; 15 years ago, I worked on a fish processing ship in the bering straits for 90 days. After the 1st 2 days, after puking and wearing a dramamine patch, I got used to the waves, and developed my "drunk walk" thats what its called when you let your body passively sway, according to the motions of the ship on the waves. After disembarking 90 days later in Seattle, i looked like a drunk for 36 hours, cuz my body was still anticipating the oceans movement. Its a thing that happens. After you get used to your "sea legs" you kinda need a minute to get your land legs back.

James Norrington, a lieutenant at the time, is 20. The main events of the film take place when Elizabeth is 20 and Norrington 28, and the disparity in their ages wouldn't have necessarily been problematic during the time period in which the film takes place, but knowing their history can be unsettling for some fans.

Pirates 1, 2 and 3 tell one big overarching story that has a beginning, middle and end. Pirates 4 and 5 are one-offs that tell self-contained stories, starring Jack Sparrow (and both are kinda needless, tbh... The story ended perfectly with the 3rd movie).

Yeah, plus he completely changed the original look and idea. In the original script, Sparrow was a bare-chested swashbuckling type hero to swing in and save the day. The Disney executives hated it, and he told them if they didn't want him to play the role the way he envisioned, they could fire him. Sparrow was also very much a side character.

the acting is all well and good, BUT if the music hadn't been the way it is, this movie's charm would have dropped like a notch or two. the music gets you pumped, and matches every characters personality. Jack's quirky fiddle/accordian sound, will and elizabeth's romantic string and flute, and barbossa's dark drums and brass. in the fight scenes, when music lines up with hits (example the smith workshop fight with jack and will), it gives you chills and emphasizes the skill in the acting and the movements. The series of the potc movies has had some inconsistencies, but with hans zimmer at the wheel for the first three; the music quality and depth DID NOT WAVER!! We all agree that potc 4 and 5 were the least exciting and least engaging? I say its because hans was not on the project.

Clarissa, to rebut your statement there at the end of the movie, in the reality of the movies, these people would have been brushing their teeth. Their breath would have been nowhere near as bad as you assumed. Actually, they would have brushed their teeth regularly as the first recorded toothbrush shows up in both Babylon and Egypt at about the same time of about 3500 to 3000 BC.
Toothpaste was actually invented way before toothbrushes, sometime around 5000 BC Egyptians are believed to have started this popular trend, using a personal-made paste in order to clean their teeth. Though the first recorded formula dates back to 4AD, their simple mixture contained mint, crushed rock salt, iris flowers, and pepper which actually worked very well. around the late 1850s, a new toothpaste called a Creme Dentifrice was developed, and in 1873, Colgate started the mass production of it in jars. My mother used to use Baking Powder when she ran out of toothpaste. That is what they used during the depression to clean their teeth.

This is one of my favorite movie and my 2nd favorite Disney Character (Stitch is my 1st).
Johnny Depp said in his trail, while on the stand, he said that it hurt him when Disney took Captain Jack Sparrow, because he put A LOT of himself in that role and it felt like they took a piece of him when Disney took Captain Jack Sparrow away from and him and it also hurt him when Disney closed all the "Prirates" to REMOVE Captain Jack Sparrow, from all their rides.
And FYI, if you ever been on a ship for a long time (I was in the Navy), when you get off ship, that is how you feel. At night though, you really feel like the land is rocking, like the sea; but it is just your equilibrium a little off. But Captain Jack Sparrow, his just drunk all the time!😂🤣

Originally the role was also written for Hugh Jackman (hence the name JACK Sparrow) but since wasn’t very well known outside of Australia they opted for a more famous actor. Also, according to Bruckheimer, Jack was originally just supposed to be a cocky pirate but Johnny took the role and made it more off-kilter, to the point that people were wondering if he (the character) was drunk or gay. Micheal Eisner even said that Depp was ruining the movie with the way he was acting. But Johnny stood firm and pulled the ‘this is the way I am playing this role, either trust me or fire me’. Good thing too, because we got a great character out of it. He brought so much more than he needed to with this role and it’s that reason why people were still coming back to this world. Even if the plot or characters weren’t very good, Jack Sparrow was what pulled people to it.
Like, I’ve got nothing against Hugh Jackman, but no one could have been better than Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Maybe it’s because I mostly know him as Wolverine, who is a very different character, but I just don’t think he would have been a good fit. Or he would have been as an action star, rather than just an action hero or a cocky bastard, but Johnny really made the character his own.
Which is also funny, because Johnny wasn’t the super star he became when making these movies. He was famous and had been in good movies, but a lot of them were flops or box office disappointments that later got a cult following, so it was a bit of a gamble to cast him in this.

I LOVE tightlacing! I have since I got my first corset years ago and I still wear one every day. I am not dependent on it but I still am thrilled every time it gets tightened. Of course it is always much better having somebody else (preferably a man) tighten it than me doing it myself as it can get much tighter with a man's strength and being behind me to do it! And you speak of Hollywood, but I have heard several actresses that were required to be in a corset for a role that have said how much they loved the way the corset made their body look, and when they talked about it they all had a HUGE smile on their face. I used to work as an actor in the early 2000's and I auditioned and won a part in this movie. (The casting people only wanted skinny, long-haired pirates, but I talked my way into an audition by referencing my extensive piratical reenactment experience and, after three callbacks, got a part as one of Jack's Crew.) Even though director Gore Verbinski was opposed to using the same actor for different roles, I was nevertheless cast as one of Sri Sumbhajee's identical twin henchmen in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" because of my strong resemblance to actor Omid Djalili.
The first movie was a blast to work on and they took us all to the Caribbean for six weeks where we filmed on a small island called St. Vincent & the Grenadines. When I came back to do the third movie a couple of years later, everyone remembered me, even Johnny. During breaks in the filming, he and I would step aside and talk about pirates. On a complete tangent, back in 1990 Lucasfilm Games released an adventure game called "The Secret Of Monkey Island" - it was directly inspired by the designer's love of the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" ride (which is where the setting came from) and the novel "On Stranger Tides" (which is where the voodoo/undead/curse aspects came from). While this movie isn't explicitly connected, there are definitely enough examples of gags and character traits to heavily imply that the writers were familiar with the game...

I'm sure you get suggestions constantly, but I think it would be interesting to hear a professional actress react to the acting in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd all put in spectacular performances (Lloyd was 5 when shooting started).
Watching another of your reactions, you might also like Kubrick's shot choices and camera movements.

Loved your reaction yet again. I love your reaction to seeing Jonathan Price. I love him too. He has a number of movies that I grew up loving. Some of my favorites are Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983...I was 8 and should not have been watching this horror classic), Brazil (1985), and Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986) with Whoopi Goldberg.
However, my absolute favorite of his roles is a mid-80s horror comedy movie that was super silly but oh so charming starring him, Gene Wilder + Gilder Radner during the year they married, and Dom DeLuise. It's called Haunted Honeymoon (1986), and I lived for that movie when I was a kid. Silly as it was, you cannot combine those 4 in a movie and not have a good time. It's much sillier than Clue (1985), but not as silly as Blazing Saddles (1974). I highly recommend checking out all 3.

The fact that the boat is sinking is unimportant. What is important is this: Jack must have been able to calculate *how long the boat would take to sink* and get it to Port Royal at exactly the right time.

24:55 And that's sadly what the later movies started losing (a bit). Instead of him being a smart guy who seems drunk all the time, he just was drunk a lot of the time and seemed to lose his cleverness, too. Especially in 5 and also in the 4th movie, for me.

    • @turricanedtc3764

While I agree that the later movies (particularly after the original trilogy) increasingly lost their charm, the vibe I got was that Jack was only "savvy" as long as "the rum [was] gone". As Keith Richards stated in his autobiography, if even half of the stories about his excesses were true, he'd be long dead by now.

@Firecat I strongly disagree. Jack's shown to be extremely cunning in the first 4 movies (he spends the entire 2nd and 3rd movies manipulating people, for chrissakes...).
The only movie where he's portrayed as a drunken fool is the 5th one, which is the only movie in the franchise not to be written by Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio (and it shows).

The type of character Jack is simply doesn’t work as a protagonist I think. He’s an instigator and a guide to dealing with the supernatural parts of this world.
The first trilogy follows Will and Elizabeth, with some side adventure scenes for Jack, so they’re great. The fourth one kinda works out since they use Barbosa as lead.
    That’s my reasoning

If you have not seen the Indiana Jones franchise, I highly recommend it. A bad ass action hero that is also an intellectual professor. Harrison Ford’s most iconic role. Also, from the mind of George Lucas and Directed by Steven Spielberg. The franchise is Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Indiana Jones 5 comes out next year.

@@callmeclariss haha no worries, its not something caught by most people. Its what she used around 15:38 a warming pan was a big pan with a lid on a stick they would fill with hot coals and put them in the bed sheets to warm up the bed, like putting a heated blanket on your bed, not something anyone would in a tropical paradise like the Caribbean. Fun fact you should look into timothy dexter, he shipped nearly 40k of them to the Caribbean on very mean advice from people who wanted to bankrupt him, but the locals figured out they worked great as laddles for their molasses refineries and bought them all up for that.

We were brought up with the image of the Victorian ladies fainting over the slightest thing. Well it turns out this was true. It;s not because they were
that sensitive to things it was that their corsets were too tight. If you were rich and living in a mansion you would have a special room for the ladies to recover in.

You can just think of the first two films as prequels. That would be an interesting way to see these for the first time and I think it kind of works.
