Took a minute to sink in, but he went on to explain that he'd spent 8 weeks teaching Depp and Bloom, among other actors/extras, proper sword etiquette. When Jack has Will mirror the sidestep, I remember going over that exact movement. I literally learned my sword basics from the very instructor who coached the actors how to fight for the film. Disney executives HATED Depps' performance in this; they tried several times to cancel the film during production or replace him outright (their original choice for the role was MATTHEW McConaughey). the CEO at the time Michael Eisner was bracing for a catastrophic flop. It wound up being their biggest earner of the year.
That part where will says “this is either madness or brilliance” and then when jack responds with “it’s remarkable how those two traits coincide” got to be my favourite couple of lines in the whole film. Epic scene
This is my favorite Pirates film but the second one to me is just about as iconic. Also, in regards to the yellowed eyes of some of the pirates; yellowed eye whites is called jaundice, which is a symptom of alcoholic hepatitis, which is a result of heavy drinking causing liver damage. So basically, the Pirates are severe alcoholics.
Yeah, that checks out. lol Incidentally, the second and third Pirates movies are part of a duology. You're supposed to watch both of them, back to back, to truly get the full story. Also, while there is a fourth and a fifth Pirates movie after the third one, I only watched each of those once... because the story could essentially be called "complete" after Part 3 ended. Which makes the next two movies nothing more than "extras." So I only really re-watch the first three Pirates movies. Also... Part 5 kind of takes some... "liberties" with the larger storyline, and goofs up on some of the plot advancement of the earlier flicks.
Fun fact: Writers confirmed Barbossa's lack of lights in his eyes is from Hepatitis, whilst Pintel's is from SEVERE scurvy...... Yellowing of the iris usually from jaundice notwithstanding.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag is easily the best pirate game around, really captures the pirate vibe plus the main character has some Jack Sparrow type qualities as well so you'd love him lol

Furthermore during the time period of the movie, the British fleet was split into 3 squadrons. This particular flag, known as the blue ensign, denotes the ship belongs to the blue squadron. There are also red and white versions for the other 2 squadrons.
That’s absolutely not the reason why the flag was different. The flag was different because it was missing the st Patrick’s saltire which was to represent Irelands entrance into the UK in 1801, the flag prior to that was just representing the union of England and Scotland

You gotta watch them all!!! The first three pirates movies are one of the best movie trilogies ever. The third one has one of the best scenes in all of cinema imo
Film three is a bit of everything - massively pretentious, over the top, a bit long - but still very ambitious, ambitiously crazy, and surprisingly fun. And gets a lot of mileage out of conflicting motives, double crossings and interplay of the characters. Not to mention the awesome Zimmer score, and some great playing off scenes between some of the prominent players. Film four sags a bit, but the characters save it. Film five just felt very tired, and with some weakened portrayals, a lot of the time.
My favorite things about the film are Gore Verbinski's directing, Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, and Hans Zimmer 's iconic score. This is seriously one of my favorite films and one of the greatest film trilogies ever.
I was impressed they got away with using a classic Disney trope twice in this series. The 'round guy' and the 'lean guy'. Here we have both Kings Navy and the Pirates using this 'buddy system'.
Klaus Badelt made the score for the first one, Hans Zimmer only helped with the creation of different themes including the main one. He had time obligations for another score which is why he’s only credited as producer on the first score
You'll notice that anytime Barbosa and Elizabeth are on screen together, Barbosa is on the left. Geoffrey Rush, knowing that most of the world looks first at the left side of the screen then across to the right, insisted on being on the left side because if Kiera was on the left, the audience would never notice him. 😉
In the film, Will and Elizabeth are 20 (around 12 in the opening), Jack is somewhere in his 20s/30s, Norrington is 28 (20 in the opening) and who knows how old the dog is.
I believe Jack is meant to be somewhere between 30 and 35, I don't remember exacyly. I know he was mutinied 10 years prior to this, and was Captain for 2 years before that. Which occured when he was quite young.
Klaus Badelt composed the ORIGINAL score for Pirates of the Caribbean, Hans Zimmer took over and expanded on it, but I feel like a lot of people forget the first guy. Iconic!
Kiera Knightly is a British actress. That is why she talks like that. It is her British accent. Fun fact is Kiera was in the Star Wars Prequels. Kiera played Padme’s double in Phantom Menace. When they were young the both looked alike.
LONG LIVE CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW!! Steven Spielberg was almost picked to direct the film but was too busy working on Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can both released in 2002. Someone said that if he won the case he should look Amber Heard and said “You’ll always remember this as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow”
Pirates 1, 2 and 3 tell one big, overarching story with a beginning, middle and end. Pirates 4 and 5 are standalone, one-off stories (and aren't as good as the OG trilogy, imo).
yeah AC Black Flag always did best at giving me the pirate-experience fix. the best parts of the game are when you're just sailing around the Caribbean exploring and fighting other ships. (listening to the sea shanties lol)
fun fact: Rum was so sought out in the Caribbean that people fought over the stuff, which makes sense when the alternate was Grog, which was basically swill with a hint of backwash, it'd get you drunk but it's about as pleasant as getting run through with a cutlass.
Grog is mostly water and was used just to keep hydrated for long trips. Pirates figured out that adding a bit of alcohol can keep the water clean over a long period of time. Then they added lemon and lime juices to protect against scurvy and added sugar for taste.
I just started watching Pirates of the Caribbean and I’ll say that This movie is so Freaking Adventurous and Awesome (Idk why I didn’t see it as a kid)

All of the Pirates of the Carribean moves are fun, however the first one is also the best one. Speaking of my favourite pirates movies....hm. I watched dozens of pirate movies over the years, i always loved this genre.
Johnny Depp took Jack Sparrow's mannerisms from Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones! 🤭 Johnny is great in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), especially his mannerisms, this movie isn't everybody's cup of tea, but i love it! 🥰🤣👌🏼✌🏼
My favorite Johnny Depp films include Benny & Joon,Sleepy Hollow,The Ninth Gate, and Alice in Wonderland.I'm probably the only person in the world who liked him in "Mordecai"
The third one is really good, and while 4 and 5 aren't anywhere near as charming as this one, they're not terrible movies, and definitely worth a watch.
In reference to the “yellow eyes” comment, it’s usually jaundice associated with liver damage which causes a spike in bilirubin. Sometimes seen in scurvy patients as well. Both scurvy or excessive drinking at sea could be causes common with that time period.
I always assumed it was liver damage due to chronic alcoholism. It was common for most seafarers, especially pirates to drink heavily. These guys most likely have had a lifetime of hardcore boozing.
Johnny Depp worked with Tim Burton in several movies: Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, Dark Shadows, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and he did voice acting in The Corpse Bride.
3:57 That man is Kevin McNally, and he has indeed been in Downton Abbey! He appears in only three episodes, so it's pretty impressive you remember that!
I thoroughly enjoyed your spirited commentary. You're so much fun (and lovely, as always). Carry on with your fine work. I'm already looking forward to your next production.
I'm really glad that Disney decided to make a movie based from their Pirates of the Caribbean ride. I've always loved the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World ever since I first went on the ride back in the 80's. Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow really made these shows great. If anyone wants to see a really young Johnny Depp then watch the Original (first) movie of "Nightmare on Elm Street from the 1980's.
In my opinion the first three are the best, but the other two after are a mess, it starts pulling stuff from nowhere and removes so many iconic characters.
As for games that are pirate related. Assasain's Creed Black Flag is probably one of the best Pirate games even if you aren't into that game series, it'll still be fun alone.
I know you finished the trilogy months ago, but lemme just say: 1. "No way are they fighting over there!" basically sums up the entire franchise. 2. Don't sleep on Norrington. He is without a doubt one of the better characters of the movies, probably the most noble heart. He's by no means a coward and is willing to risk his own life to save people, also he's willing to accept that his love wants another man and even gives them his blessing, etc. His stint as a pirate and that conflict within makes for an interesting transition back and forth.
There was a Pirates of the Caribbean Online for a while, but Disney wasn't into running a mmo long term and closed it down. Recently they made a deal with Rare and they released PotC content within Sea of Thieves. There is a pirate themed t.v. show which is on par with game of Thrones in production and acting quality - better in writing, called Black Sails.
The scene where Jack and Will walk underwater is actually possible because when you submerge a container upside down in water, the air becomes trapped between the material and the water. I’ve actually done it myself.
You're the ONLY one I've seen point out and talk about the age gap between Elizabeth and Norrington! Thank you! It's always kind of creeped me out but nobody acknowledges it.
All the Pirates movies are great quality films. I would say this one is the best stand-alone movie, but the 2nd and 3rd are my favorites. Dead Man's Chest and At World's End should be considered together because there isn't really a conclusion in the 2nd, the story caries over to the 3rd film.
One of my favorite movies, Johnny was just born for that role. For sure would love reactions to the others. btw. because u said u wanted to play a pirate game and not sea of thiefs, I can highly recommend Assasins Creed Black Flag, its perfect for that if u get that feeling while watching this film, it gives u such a great Pirate mood.
I really appreciated as the movie played it triggered some of your memories and associations with the story and characters/ actors. Also 'Gamora' was in Avatar, Star Trek as Uhura, and Drumline.
The only one that i really cared about was the first one because i’m really nostalgic and it makes me think of the ride at Disneyland, as a matter of fact, the imagineers made a Jack sparrow after the movie came out and put it in the ride
If you can find the game, Sid Meier's Pirates game from '04/'05 was great fun. More modern games you could play Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag or even the Lego Pirates of the Caribbean game
Regarding the "boat underwater creating an air pocket" trick, apparently it's not possible, at least not in the way they did it, or the length of time they did it. It's been debunked by many people. That scene had me questioning my common sense haha.
It might be possible, but you'd need to attach a lot of extra weight to the boat. Otherwise, it would just float back up to the surface with that big air bubble under it. And by extra weight, I mean extra density. Two people, or indeed any number of people, won't cut it, because people have about the same density as water. And since they're in salt water, it would be even less effective. You'd need an iron anchor or something. And it would have to pull down equally on both sides of the boat, otherwise it would roll sideways and let all the air out. I never noticed this physics discrepancy when I first watched the movie, so I guess now I'm compensating by overanalyzing it.
If you’re looking for a great pirate game, Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag is exactly what you’re looking for. And you don’t have to know anything about the series to enjoy this one!
The boat thing underwater is very possible. The moment the edge of the boat touches the water it traps the air in the available space because water is non-permeable. You can simulate the effect by turning over a cup (glass to see through it) and pressing it down onto relatively flat water in the sink. You would see that there is air trapped in the top of the cup between the glass and the water.
Elizabeths upbringing would probably help, not hinder someone inexperienced. After all Elizabeth, as the daughter of the governor, would most likely have learned more about ships than the average girl in that town.
you know mary, the best thing about people like us who have bad memoriy is that we get to watch things multiple times for the first time 😭😭😭 P.S. when pirates came out i was obsessed with "sid meyer's pirates!" so id recommend that even though it isnt a very complex game. and assassins creed 4!

@@AdamRee-lx8uh Based on what?
I love the dog with keys reference from the ride. The ride terrified me as 4 year old with nothing but good memories as I got older.
27:14 They always made the food look so satisfying in these movies!
Yes, definitely watch all the movies. I was always aware of JD, but I don't think I really ever liked him until these movies.
In reference to the “yellow eyes” comment, it’s usually jaundice associated with liver damage which causes a spike in bilirubin.
Sometimes seen in scurvy patients as well. Both scurvy or excessive drinking at sea could be causes common with that time period.
more than likely the latter, once they learned that citrus was all they needed to cure Scurvy.
@@UltimateGamerCC The Royal Navy started shipping limes on board for that purpose, hence the nickname "Limey."
I always assumed it was liver damage due to chronic alcoholism. It was common for most seafarers, especially pirates to drink heavily. These guys most likely have had a lifetime of hardcore boozing.
Please watch the Johnny Depp movie "Sleepy Hollow"!
Also 'Fear and Loathing in Vegas'
I second that
Fuck yeah
YES. My go-to Halloween movie... such a fun pick.
YES!!! I was waiting to see this one day! You are going to LOVE these films, Mary!
3:57 That man is Kevin McNally, and he has indeed been in Downton Abbey! He appears in only three episodes, so it's pretty impressive you remember that!
He's also in a Netflix series called Designated Survivor.
I thoroughly enjoyed your spirited commentary. You're so much fun (and lovely, as always). Carry on with your fine work. I'm already looking forward to your next production.
In high school when I was home alone I would order a pizza and watch this movie. It was my therapy.
The Princess Bride is my favorite movie too. Love these movies as well, mostly the first three.
I personally like all the movies in this franchise. I see no harm in reacting to all of them.
"they can breathe underwater, that's such a skill".
Fun fact, Salazar's Revenge is called "On Stranger Tides" in the US.
I know you finished the trilogy months ago, but lemme just say:
This is one of my favorite movies.
Deep is amazing. This and the 5th are too well-done.
“Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag” a great pirate game
I was gonna suggest this too.. the game has great pirate songs too
@@christheripper7 Shanties, mate. And all of 'em were really sung at the time.
I love this movie. I have been on the Pirates of the Caribbean every time I visited Disney world. 3 times I have gone the ride.
If you want to play a pirate game i highly recommend playing assassins creed black flag.
The sea shanties alone are worth it imo
I think we can trust when she says she remembers nothing about these movies when she says Penelope Cruz is in the third movie.
Black Sails is definitely underrated. 🧐😎
There was also a pocket model series that had a PotC crossover set. Main series ran from 2004 to 2008.
MC: i like how Elizabeth's brave and doesn't scream
All three films: Elizabeth constantly screaming mostly
I grew up watching this movie and I have it down word for word in my head
The scene where Jack and Will walk underwater is actually possible because when you submerge a container upside down in water, the air becomes trapped between the material and the water. I’ve actually done it myself.
But you would swim upwards with wood
@@GMMStR-fx4fn Why? Because wood floats? You know you can hold wood underwater.
You’d have to have the strength of a god to create an air pocket with a boat though 😂
@@lokephoenix1039 I can’t argue with that.
Yeah, you can create an air pocket but it'd be practically impossible to keep it from floating up.
You're the ONLY one I've seen point out and talk about the age gap between Elizabeth and Norrington! Thank you! It's always kind of creeped me out but nobody acknowledges it.
Anything is possible.. as long as the pirates of the Caribbean is playing in the background 😜
that "thats not good enough" - why the rum gone
Keep reacting to them! Love to hear your thoughts
All the Pirates movies are great quality films. I would say this one is the best stand-alone movie, but the 2nd and 3rd are my favorites. Dead Man's Chest and At World's End should be considered together because there isn't really a conclusion in the 2nd, the story caries over to the 3rd film.
Keep watching for sure the first three at least, they are so much fun every time they showed them on TV I watched them.
Yes watch all of them it’s worth the while there is very good banter between characters as well
One of my favorite movies, Johnny was just born for that role.
For sure would love reactions to the others.
btw. because u said u wanted to play a pirate game and not sea of thiefs, I can highly recommend Assasins Creed Black Flag, its perfect for that if u get that feeling while watching this film, it gives u such a great Pirate mood.
AC Black Flag. One of the best AC games and an amazing Pirate game complete with sea shanties.
The best pirates game to play is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Even though it was released in 2013, it still holds up as a fun and engaging game.
There are some notable women pirate captains, famous in the age of high piracy. Look up Captain Anne Bonny, for one.
1) I'm Captain Jack Sparrow
2) I am Vengeance. I am the Night! I AM BATMAN!
3) I'm Ironman.
4) We are Venom.
Mythbusters tried the upside-down boat underwater thing. They found that they couldn't hold the boat down while underwater.
I really appreciated as the movie played it triggered some of your memories and associations with the story and characters/ actors. Also 'Gamora' was in Avatar, Star Trek as Uhura, and Drumline.
Had to look up. Zoe Saldana was AnaMaria
She also starred in Colombiana.
She was great in the underrated action classic The Losers as well.
The only one that i really cared about was the first one because i’m really nostalgic and it makes me think of the ride at Disneyland, as a matter of fact, the imagineers made a Jack sparrow after the movie came out and put it in the ride
One of your most delightful reactions ! !
Zoe Saldana.. yes, sometimes green but also blue... in this, she's a baddass pirate
If you can find the game, Sid Meier's Pirates game from '04/'05 was great fun. More modern games you could play Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag or even the Lego Pirates of the Caribbean game
Random thought, but I think that Jack Sparrow and Sirius Black would get along really well
Regarding the "boat underwater creating an air pocket" trick, apparently it's not possible, at least not in the way they did it, or the length of time they did it.
@@PhilBagels that's why diving bells were made so heavy
If you’re looking for a great pirate game, Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag is exactly what you’re looking for. And you don’t have to know anything about the series to enjoy this one!
Please give STAR TREK a chance! 🖖🥰
If you want to play a pirate game, there’s no greater than Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag!
One of my all-time favorite movies! I also loved PotC 2, but not really a fan of the others. Glad you enjoyed this treasure.
The stick figure drama you acted out was brilliant. 😁
"makes me want to play a pirate game"
*ASSASINS CREED BLACK FLAG SEA SHANTIES INTENSIFIES*
wow, finally. now that you are 20 year late on this movie we can finally acknowledge the roll of jack sparrow.
Correct, this is the hydrostatic principles of Archimedes and Pascal, and was already used in the 4th century BC in diving bells.
jack meant the tight corset she was wearing by the singapore line
Elizabeths upbringing would probably help, not hinder someone inexperienced. After all Elizabeth, as the daughter of the governor, would most likely have learned more about ships than the average girl in that town.
Super fun movies. Jack Sparrow is legendary
you know mary, the best thing about people like us who have bad memoriy is that we get to watch things multiple times for the first time 😭😭😭
P.S. when pirates came out i was obsessed with "sid meyer's pirates!" so id recommend that even though it isnt a very complex game. and assassins creed 4!
I jus may binge all these today
The 5th movie, "Salazar's Revenge" is called "Dead Man Tell No Tales" in the U.S.
Hey Mary, did you recognize Elizabeth's father as the same actor who played the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones?
Jonathan Pryce, brillant british actor👍. Also actor Mackenzie Crook, the pirate with the wooden eye, was in GoT where he played Orell the Wildling.
The two of them walking with the row under water is absolutely possible. Its legitimate science.
