It's hard to believe that it was 20 years ago this month that I started work on this movie as one of Jack Sparrow's crew. (@22:02 I'm standing behind Barbossa and @28:56 I'm at the far left.) This was the most fun I've ever had working on a movie and I made some great friends along the way. There are so many stories I could tell, but my favorite one took place three years afterward when I was hired to play a differentg character in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End". Everyone on the film crew remembered me (it was like I'd never been away) and I felt that same cameraderie that I felt in the first movie. I was one of Sri Sumbhajee's twins so I was heavily made up with a beard, mustache, and a turban. When I told Johnny I was one of his crew in the first one, he asked which one. I told him I was the big, bald guy and he said, "The one in the orange shirt? That's so cool, you're back! Isn't this the most fun you've ever had in your life?" After that, whenever we cut to change shots or reset the set to do the scene again, he and I would step off to one side and talk about pirates.
He is one of the nicest people I've ever met, in or out of the industry.

30:08 "Why am I so sad...apple" Well, b/c Barbossa is an absolutely classic villain, equal parts threatening and charming. The scenery chewing over-the-topness of the performance perfectly matched the tone of the movie. His casting was almost as essential to the success of the film as Johny Depp's.

It's interesting how much more sinister and villainous Jack seems in that first movie. We sort of know him by reputation as a hero, but for most of this movie, it's really unclear where his loyalties are, as he keeps crossing and doublecrossing everyone, for a sweeter deal. Especially with Will as the classic leading man, Jack is an absolute wild card.
Also, the second and third movies are really good too.

      SPOILERS FOR PIRATES 2:
He straight up tricks Will into enslaving himself to the Flying Dutchmann so he can pay off his debt with Davy Jones. Plus, he gaslights poor Elizabeth about it throughout most of that movie.

And yes, like you said, it has something for everyone. I also like that there are actual consequences in this movie. They were specifically tailored for the wearer, and being Elizabeth was the daughter of the Governor, she would have been dressed in the finest clothes, including a corset made with whalebone. A corset that did not fit properly would've been uncomfortable to wear, but given who Elizabeth was, I doubt she ever had that problem.

One thing most people don't realize that Jacks plan would've worked and not ended with Will's death. When he tells Barbossa that he will "shout the name back to you" the name he would shout would be "William Turner". Which is also the name of Will's father. So he would have told them the truth but they don't know that he had a son. He would have had the Black Pearl, the crew would have remained cursed and stuck (they can walk under water but only so deep before the pressure keeps them from moving).

This whole movie is composed of Easter Eggs for/from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (if you haven't ridden it, watch it on RUclips, you'll see them all). Yet somehow, they managed to turn it into a *good* movie with a *good* plot...which is kinda a miracle.

You mentioned the details put into this, like the eyes. Jaundice and scurvy were common among seafarers of the day. Major visible symptoms were yellowing eyes and bad teeth. The makeup department definitely paid attention.

you had a crush on Orlando Bloom during The Lord of the Rings? well, here's a couple of other movies he did after LOTR and amid filming Pirates of the Caribbean; Troy (2004) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005). I recommend seeing the extended editions of both.

If you want to see a hilariously different version of Johnny Depp, I suggest you watch "Benny & Joon". He plays a man that has studied Buster Keaton of the silent movie era and is fantastic in the film. This is still my favorite of all the Pirate franchise. It really set the bar high for adventure films, though the 1980's film "Romancing The Stone" still takes the cake in that category IMHO.

I forget how much fun this movie is, it really is a stylish adventure with just enough creepy to set it off perfectly. And regardless of the historical inaccuracy through the film, it all looked nice - and I always loved Elizabeth's burgundy dress and wanted one myself.

Zoe saldana, who plays Anamaria, also plays Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy. She never returned to the pirates franchise since the executives all hated her and bullied her all throughout the movie and made her feel miserable.
She almost quit acting because of this movie.
