Ben Burtt, sound designer for all 6 of Lucas's Star Wars films, is a name that should be heralded up there with Lucas and John Williams. His work is absolutely incredible. He also did all of the sound for WALL-E and many other movies, including the Indiana Jones films. He is responsible for how lightsabers sound, how TIE fighters roar, the sound of blasters, the sound of wookiees. Lucas worked side by side with him on many things, but only because he knew and trusted in Burtt's abilities. Together they came up with how R2D2 should sound - which was not an easy process. Ben Burtt also was the film editor for the prequels. He is a legend that most people don't realize! :)

Okay, now that you are in the Prequel Trilogy, I can share a fun factoid. The two trilogies have a family connection in the casts of the films. In the Original Trilogy, the character of Wedge Antilles, an X-wing pilot that helps destroy both Death Stars was played by Denis Lawson. Lawson's nephew saw him in the films as a kid, and grew up to be a more famous actor and was cast as Obi-Wan Kenobi...Ewan McGregor. Star Wars is really a family story and a family business.
Another family connection that is fun, even if you can't ever really see her on screen...George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola (director of 'The Godfather'films) are long time friends and collaborators. Francis produced George's film 'American Graffiti'. George cast Francis's daughter, Sofia Coppola as one of the handmaidens. Sofia would later become a successful writer-director in her own right ('Lost In Translation', 'Marie Antoinette', and 'The Virgin Suicides').

The Jedi assumed the Sith were all wiped out in the aftermath of that battle, which is also why it's known as a Phantom menace: How can the enemy be a Sith if they were all supposedly destroyed a millennia ago? :P

Around the time this was released, there was a video game that revolved around the pod racing, "Star Wars Episode I: Racer", for the Nintendo 64 game system. You could race as any of the racers on other tracks in addition to the one on Tatooine. As Sebulba, I think you were able to set fire to the other racers as you went up beside them. The English-speaking head of the track announcer in both the film and the game was voiced by Greg Proops, who is perhaps best known for making frequent appearances on the improv comedy show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?".

Addie l, I don’t know if you have the time or the ability to watch the whole Clone Wars series between Episodes II and III. I waited years to watch it and I gained a much greater appreciation for the Prequels and the characters as a result. Star Wars: Rebels is another good show that takes place 5 years before Episode IV (the first film from 1977). It’s technically a kids show, so the tone is a little different, but I still enjoyed it, especially when you get to see old characters make an appearance.
Then of course you have the Mandalorian, the Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi to watch now, too!

Darth Maul is a Zabrak, who all have the little horns on their heads, and while most Zabraks support the Republic, there is a subset of the species that reside on the planet Dathomir, a Dark Side focus, and ruled by a Dark Side cult known as the Nightsisters, hence the black and red coloring.
Anakin is 9 years old here, with Padme being 14, so there is only 5 years difference between them. Also, Anakin being accepted for training was highly unusual, as Younglings are generally only taken in before they're more than 2 years old. The oldest before Anakin was 5 years old, which was scandalous at the time.
This film shows the beginnings of the troubles the Republic would soon face, with the Trade Federation paving the way for more systems to break away from the Republic and its economic corruption. And yes, while battle droids aren't particularly great at fighting, they're cheaply and quickly able to be mass produced, which is more than can be said for any flesh and blood army that needs years of training.
Jake Lloyd, the boy who played Anakin, got a lot of bullying at school for being in the movie, and among other problems he had growing up, ended up having trouble with the law later on. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and it's just sad to see someone's life go that direction. At least he is getting help for his problems now.
And yes, that is Keira Knightley as the Queen too, when in costume they looked so alike even their own mothers couldn't tell them apart.
Finally, the fact that Maul can hold off two Jedi with a double-bladed lightsaber isn't surprising. It's essentially the same as a quarterstaff, which even a moderately skilled wielder can use to great effect against swordsmen. It may not be immediately lethal like a sword thrust, but it is exceptionally good at defense.

Back story: the master of Quigonn Jin was a man named Count Dooku, who was convinced that the Sith still existed and would attack them again. Because of this, he obsessively trained in dueling techniques. The other Jedi basically thought he was nuts and dangerously obsessed with violence and killing.
This is in part why Quigonn butts heads with the Jedi council and is a bit of a rebel.
Obi-Wan is in turn a bit unorthodox, which has various consequences when Anakin becomes his apprentice.
"Always two, there are." Yoda is referring to the Rule of Two.
Thousands of years ago, there were as many Sith as there were Jedi, but every time the Sith gained the upper hand, they were done in by constant infighting because all of them crave power. A Sith Lord started the Rule of Two to minimize the infighting.
But if doesn't eliminate the infighting. Every Sith apprentice becomes a master by killing his or her own master. If the master wins that fight, they go looking for another apprentice.

You're the second reactor I've seen that caught on the fact that Padmé was the queen, and that the other one was a decoy. The decoy, believe it or not, was played by Keira Knightley, and I gotta say, that was a clever move by the queen. About the changes, the Podrace scene wasn't as long as you saw. It was originally cut for pacing because they wanted to get through it sooner, I think, but was restored on the DVD release. As for Yoda, they originally used a puppet. When this film was re-released in theaters (in 3D), they replaced the puppet with a CG model. Now, the fight choreography in the lightsaber battle against Darth Maul was REALLY cool, especially due to the fact that Ray Park portrayed Maul. Park usually does his own choreography, and it showed here. They had auditioned many different kid actors for Anakin in this film, including Haley Joel Osment, but Jake Lloyd's delivery of his lines was the best, so they cast him. Sadly, many years later, he got in trouble with the law, and was in a mental institution (diagnosed as schizophrenic). I think he was recently let out, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, may the Force guide him back on the right path. Jar Jar was a very controversial character, so much so, that George Lucas decided to reduce the character's role in the next two films.

most of the shields in Star wars are energy or velocity based, so if you move slow enough, you can get inside,

28:30 you have no idea how true that statement is...it's like Qui-Gon said: "Finding him was the will of the Force"

Pretty sure its named phantom menace because Darth Maul is referred to as the phantom attacker or something like that at the Jedi council, and he stares menacingly in all his scenes. but I suppose it could also be a general reference to how the Sith have been manipulating everything from the shadows and perfecting their menacing stare.

You're very observant which I've liked in the previous reactions too, so many who don't have subtitles on miss Obi-Wan's name in the very beginning! It IS a fun little sci-fi adventure, but it for sure wasn't what the old fans (myself included) had been waiting for when it was released! I remember leaving the theatre SO ANNOYED at how it had become a "children's movie" as I recall myself putting it! :D And imagine how those guys must've grumbled who thought Ewoks in Episode VI were already too kid-oriented content! After years have passes I've mellowed out and can actually already enjoy the prequels, but I still question the execution (and necessity, to be honest - I preferred the mystery and using my own imagination to think about Vader's past and the Clone Wars).
Glad you enjoyed this though, and I'm sure you're going have quite the ride in the next films.

THANK YOU for noticing Qui-Gon says Obi-Wan's name at the beginning. You're among the ~5% of all reactors who even HEAR that.
    Thank you for paying attention.

Your butterfly pendant kind of looks like the snippet that Anakin carved for Padme.

If you like the design of the ship they used to escape, you should check out the SR71 videos. Its where they got the inspiration for it. The SR71 Blackbird is also the fastest plane in the military.

Hehe.. yeah.. recognized Natalie when I saw her. I knew her from an older film called Leon(by the way one of my fav films.. hope you get chance to watch someday). With that info.. I presumed she was the queen. Keira Knightly was the total unknown for me at the time.
I did also enjoy 1st prequel(felt similar to the 1st sequel). Looking to see your opinion of the 2nd and especially.. the 3rd.
Also wanna see if you recognize a certain actor from another series you watched in the 2nd prequel.. :D
