Rickman's delivery is the absolute best damn thing here. =) This movie seems like a parody at first but you quickly realize it's pretty much a love letter to the sci-fi genre.

@@james.b.mcgill Other way around. Parody is generally more of an homage to the source material, satire is more of a critique, poking holes and pointing out the flaws in the genre.
This movie is a absolute GEM! As a fan of Star Trek, and seeing Spaceballs before I was warry to see it but the cast, especially Alan Rickman, convinced me to give it a shot and it was and is absolutely brilliant! It's funny as hell but at the same time emotional and showing how a show like this could impact people's (and aliens😅) life's and therefore mean a lot to them. It really is a "Love letter" to, not just Trekkies, but fans in general.
Yeah, but Spaceballs is great too, just in a slapstick Mel Brooks way. But I have to admit I've only seen Spaceballs a couple dozen times, maybe half as many times as Galaxy Quest
The actors playing the Thermians in this movie really killed it. Of course octopoids imitating humans would find themselves trapped in the Uncanny Valley when trying to do it. Just imagine yourself trying to imitate an octopus... to an actual octopus. You'd have no real idea how to move like them, and it wouldn't fool them at all. The fact that Mathesar's actor was able to do all that and still effectively & believably convey an entire range of human emotions is a real tribute to his skill.
Mathesar's actor actually based the speech patterns on an old acting school technique he learned. The director liked it so much he had him teach the rest how to speak that way
The Thermians actors include Rainn Wilson who would go on to be famous as Dwight in The Office, and Sam Lloyd, who would later be Ted in Scrubs, a personal favourite. Malthesar was played by Enrico Colantoni, iconic in this, Veronica Mars, Just Shoot Me, and a huge number of parts in TV and movies.
one thing no one seems to ever notice, during the firefight near the end where everyone is getting shot and killed, the only character to not get shot was Guy the expendible "red shirt"
Never noticed before the obscure reference "Back after 18 years..." That is the number of years between the end of the original Star Trek (Kirk, Spock etc) and the start of Star Trek Next Generation (Pickard).
In the Babylon 5 commentaries, Bruce Boxleitner spoke on this movie and how great it is. He never really understood the whole scifi fandom even after TRON, but as time went on he got it and said this movie perfectly illustrated this world.
This reaction was a fun surprise!!! Even after all these years it still blows my mind that they managed to make a film that satirizes Star Trek while also being a love letter to the fans.
Many Star Trek fans not only consider this a ST movie but also one of the very best. I think because it has very many elements of ST from both sides (the show and the fandom), but also it doesn't alienate the fandom in any way. It's in equal parts both mocking and respectful to the show and the fandom. It basically has a perfect balance, and is legitimately a good SF romp all at the same time. The Cornetto Trilogy does a similar thing I think. Made by lovers of media who are capable of making a very decent film in the genre whilst not being afraid to add a good dose of fan service, as well as 'taking the piss' a little.🤣
Great reaction, loved it! Sigourney Weaver as a blonde in this was a riot after seeing her as Ripley in Aliens. I was lucky to see the "F" bomb version in the theatres.
This has such an amazing cast and is so funny (I’m not a big Trekkie but I adore this movie!) Alan Rickman is just sublime in this! ❤ Also fun fact/quote from Patrick Stewart that is my favourite reactions and sums up the movie: “I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans”
This movie got very little press release, and even the movie posters only went up the day it was released (I was working at a movie theater in '99), and as such, it went under the radar. Thankfully, people caught on after it was released on home video, because it definitely deserves all the love it gets.
I remember going to the theater and seeing a big cardboard replica of the ship hanging from the ceiling along with some pics of the actors, that's about all I recall of the promotion for it. Friends and I were sci-fi fans and went to see it and had a blast. Still a favorite to this day.
During the scene with Mathesar, Tim Allen was getting emotional and said "Yeah, I don't like these feelings I'm having" and he left the set and went back to his trailer. Alan Rickman then said "Oh my god, I think he's just experienced acting"
This and Seth MacFarlane's The Orville are the best parodies of Star Trek. If particular, this film captures the fandom culture and the behind-the-scenes drama between the actors. Alan Rickman's character also displays Leonard Nimoy's sentiments about being best known for Spock, as he wrote two books, one called "I Am Not Spock" and then "I Am Spock."
Tony Shalhoub's character makes a lot more sense when you learn he was supposed to be stoned throughout the movie. The scene where he tokes up was among those cut from the final release version by the studio to ensure a PG rating after the first cut submitted to the MPAA got an R.
Nearly 25 years later this film has aged liked a fine wine, funny and full of heart, I don't think I've ever met a single person who has seen this film and doesn't like it.
If it hasn’t been mentioned I would like to point out that when everyone got shot on the bridge Guy was the only crew member not shot. The movie even pokes fun at itself.
Clariss, as both a lifelong Star Trek fan...I am 54 and started watching Star Trek 40 or more years ago...and as someone who has performed on stage, studied the theatrical arts on and backstage as well as worked behind the scenes (as well as knowledgeable about the entertainment industry with a friend who currently actively produces and writes for a couple of shows), I appreciated seeing another reaction to this beloved movie but this time from the prospective of someone who understands what it is like to work in the industry. I think you got this movie on a whole other level than most people do and really enjoyed your reaction. Your background in entertainment is what makes you different from others in these reactions along with your great sense of humor. Please keep them coming!

I absolutely love this movie, and I'm super impressed with how good the creature effects for the villain and his soldiers were. Stan Winston's special effects studio made those suits and creatures, and it makes sense that they looks so good. They made the Predator!
Great reaction! The film is not only a great parody, but also a wonderful homage to Star Trek and the also to the fans that have kept the dream alive for more than half a century so far. Given how much you enjoyed Galaxy Quest, you might also like a 90-minute documentary that was made in 2019 for the 20th anniversary of the movie called Never Surrender (on Prime). It talks with the cast, the crew, and the executives about the history of the movie and how it was made. It also talks with fans, critics and Star Trek alumni about how the film was received and the lasting legacy and cult status it has achieved. I have watched the documentary many times and enjoy it so much, I hope you will too.
This movie is so close to my heart, it always put me in a good mood. Great cast and actually a surprising mix of actors. I never thought I’d see Tim Allen and Alan Rickman on screen together. And this is the movie that made me realize Tim Allen is a really good looking man.
Fun fact. If you notice during the beginning when they're playing the actual show, Tony shalhob squints during his close-up. It's because his character is named "Chen". He's playing an Asian. Also, look at Sigourney Weavers lips during the chompers scene, she is definitely not saying "screw that".
Sam Rockwell is an excelllent actor... very versatile. He's the one that played Guy. If you get the chance, you should watch the documentary about the making of this film. One funny story is Tim Allen is a supposedly a geek about this kind of stuff. The script called for them to just go out of the shuttle. Tim was arguing they needed yo do checks first in case the planet wasn't appropriate for their types of life forms. They basically said no to doing checks. But in the very next take, Sam improvised the line, " Is there air? You don't know!". If you haven't done it yet, you should check out "JoJo Rabbit", another star studded cast.
14:06 There's actually an explanation for this behavior...and a whole lot more that he exhibits all throughout. See, there's a deleted scene where this guy smoked an *enormous* blunt before he went in for the second round at the convention center. So he's actually high as a kite for the whole movie...
“Go for the eyes, like in episode 22!” “It doesn’t have eyes Tommy.” “Then go for the mouth, the throat, it’s vulnerable spots!” “It’s a ROCK! It doesn’t have any vulnerable spots!”
In theaters, this film was hurt a lot by poor marketing: the studio didn't know what a gem they had, so they tried to position it as a fun kids comedy adventure movie, which is NOT what it is. That meant they also cut the key comedic plot point of Fred being "elevated" and Gwen's one f-bomb. It IS a good adventure movie, it's just that most of the jokes were for adults and people familiar with Star Trek fandom, not children. Which is too bad, because they did some really interesting things with this film in the theater setting. In particular, when the aspect ratio widened on Jason's first glimpse of space, the curtains in some theaters pulled back to accommodate, adding to the drama.
It's release to the home market elevated to cult status and there were plans for a sequel but Alan Rickmans passing ended that as Tim, Sigourney and the others didn't want to do it without AR.
My understanding, is that in the theater-release version, the film's aspect ratio changes TWICE: Once, at the end of the "TV show" opening sequence, when the words, "To be continued..." flash on the screen. Then, a second time, when the doors of the Protector II open, to give Jason the info that he really is in Outer Space. (The double change in aspect ratio is a wonderful touch. Unfortunately, the DVD version I have, omits the second of these changes. Nor have I actually seen the second change occur on streaming versions in reaction videos. I don't know where it's possible to watch a version of this film with the second change in aspect ratio, as the director intended.)
I love that during the scene where Tim Allen is admitting that they are all actors he was emotionally wrecked during it and couldn't figure out why. Alan Rickman noted it was the first time that Allen was "experiencing acting."
When everybody can out of their transport pods,Sam Rockwell improvised the scream ,he didn't tell anybody beforehand which Sigourney Weaver jumped and was completely shocked. Also please have more kitty breaks.😺😺😺😺
"Well, Screw THAT!". If you look closely, Sigourney didn't say "Screw"... hehehe They also had to cut the Scenes where Tony Shalhoub was"partaking".. It would've explained alot about his "Chill Nature" but the studio's didn't want it to look like they approved "Recreational Herbal Usage". This Movie was a nod and a hug to the fans of Star Trek and the cast did this with great love as well... It's a CRIME that there's little to no Galaxy Quest in the Cons.
Tony Shalhoub's character on the show was called Chen. Notice he is always squinting, he's played a fake Chinese on the show. Plus he's a pot head which is why he takes everything in stride.😊
Sigourney said it was so obvious that she said F**k that and the dubbed screw that over it….there’s a documentary about Galaxy Quest talking to cast, crew and fans and it’s really interesting. Lotta love for Alan Rickman 😢
Tony Shaloub's character is high as a kite throughout the movie. That's why he acts like that and is always eating. Also his character on the show was supposed to be Asian so notice how he squints his eyes whenever he's getting into character
Along with Forrest Gump, Fight Club, Citizen Kane, Toy Story, and The Princess Bride, this film is widely considered to be one of the six absolutely perfect films ever made.
This is what we need on You-Tube talented and good-hearted content creators who do videos and reactions with a genuine commitment to the audience as well as themselves. Continue to do your thing Clariss. Out of curiosity would you consider watching Scarface 1983 which stars Al Pacino? as well as other well-known actors and actresses.
That fact that Fred is stoned out of his gourd the entire time is just such a fun little extra detail that explains why his character is so cool for most of the movie, lol.
I've watched this movie so many times, and this was the first time I really thought about what it would have been like for the cast of Star Trek to see a real life version of the Enterprise.
Never Surrender is a GREAT documentary about the making of the movie. The comics also have a great story between the movie's adventure and The Journey Continues. Apparently did so well, there's a lot more GQ comics now! I thought there was only a one off "sequel"!
So different from his roles as villains in Travelers and Person of Interest, but he's become one of those ubiquitous "I know that guy....from somewhere" kind of actors.
Such a bittersweet, scifi adventure/comedy - glad you really understood the premise and ran with it for a great reaction! All the actors were top notch, but Tony Shalhoub is just great in this.
In case you hadn't figured it out, Tech Sergeant Chen (Tony Shalhoub) was so chill with everything weird going on because he's SUPER stoned the whole film.
There's an amazing documentary about Galaxy Quest called Never Surrender. I got to see it on a one-time showing in a real theater back in pre-pandemic times. It was awesome and worthy of the film it portrays. Catch it if you ever get the chance.
If you ever make your way to Seattle there's a full-sized costume of Sarris on display at the Museum of Pop Culture. Along with a ton of other music, movie and TV show memorabilia. Currently the featured exhibit is the Laika movies like Coraline, Paranorman and The Boxtrolls. That exhibit will be there until the end of summer next year
I first saw this film with the family, and my daughter-in-law's Dad was a professor of physics. Serious scientific dude. We didn't expect him to like it, but he laughed so hard he had abdominal spasms.

I'm a *huge* Star Trek fan.
My favorite Star Trek movie is Galaxy Quest.
My favorite Star Trek show is The Orville.
A truly underappreciated movie.
Great movie!!! 😂🤣😂🤣
"IS THERE AIR? *YOU* DONT KNOW!!" Rockwell kills me with that! 😂🤣
Tony Shalhoub acting high af as Fred is hilarious!! 😂🤣😂🤣
KITTY!!!!!💘🐱💗💗🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Klaatu (nebula) is the name of the alien who visits Earth in the sci-fi classic The Day they Earth Stood Still (the original).
14:06 There's actually an explanation for this behavior...and a whole lot more that he exhibits all throughout. See, there's a deleted scene where this guy smoked an *enormous* blunt before he went in for the second round at the convention center. So he's actually high as a kite for the whole movie...
At the end, when Sarris shoots at everybody on the bridge, the only one who doesn't get hit is Guy.
“Go for the eyes, like in episode 22!”
“It doesn’t have eyes Tommy.”
“Then go for the mouth, the throat, it’s vulnerable spots!”
“It’s a ROCK! It doesn’t have any vulnerable spots!”
I love that Guy got a last name in the end.
If you can read lips, you know that the actress (I forget her name off the top of my head. Crucify me) did not say "well, screw that" at 24:19
In theaters, this film was hurt a lot by poor marketing: the studio didn't know what a gem they had, so they tried to position it as a fun kids comedy adventure movie, which is NOT what it is.
Gwen's one F-bomb that would've been allowed in a PG-13 (even know that wasn't the initial rating they were going for)
I love that during the scene where Tim Allen is admitting that they are all actors he was emotionally wrecked during it and couldn't figure out why.
Just in case no one said it yet; tony shaloub's character's deleted subplot was that he was always high
I'm glad you watched this, it's a gem. What a crew, what a story. Thx for sharing your interesting reaction.
The Thermians are from the Klaatu Nebula. It's a little in-joke, for the people who've seen the movie "The Day The World Stood Still".
This is one of my favorite movies!
Guy Fleegman is Lt. Roc Ingersol
"Well, Screw THAT!". If you look closely, Sigourney didn't say "Screw"... hehehe
They also had to cut the Scenes where Tony Shalhoub was"partaking"..
Your reaction reminded me how much I love this movie! I even teared up when we lost Queleg! Thank you.
Tony Shalhoub's character on the show was called Chen. Notice he is always squinting, he's played a fake Chinese on the show. Plus he's a pot head which is why he takes everything in stride.😊
Great film, great react, MORE KITTEH!!!
Sigourney said it was so obvious that she said F**k that and the dubbed screw that over it….there’s a documentary about Galaxy Quest talking to cast, crew and fans and it’s really interesting. Lotta love for Alan Rickman 😢
I love your reaction to this, and seeing your adorable kitty was a pure bonus win.
David Mamet called this a “perfect movie.” ‘Nuff said!
To get a more family-friendly rating, some of the most explicit moments depicting Fred being high on weed for the entire film were cut.
You forgot "Back to the Future".
By Grabthar's hammer, what a reaction!
This movie is one of the best pieces of Star Trek media, right up there with The Orville.
Saw this movie in the theaters when it came out, and it was a hoot. Surprisingly excellent and funny.
I've made this comment before. 50% parody, 50% tribute, 100% greatness
The only one who DOESN'T get shot during the final attack is Guy. It's a nice touch.
I really enjoyed your reaction, i think you said OMG about 50 times.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That fact that Fred is stoned out of his gourd the entire time is just such a fun little extra detail that explains why his character is so cool for most of the movie, lol.
I've watched this movie so many times, and this was the first time I really thought about what it would have been like for the cast of Star Trek to see a real life version of the Enterprise.
I see you have the edited version...
Go back to when Sigourney says "well screw that!" after seeing the crushers, and read her lips...
After my cat BonBon saw your cat on the screen, she started watching intently and watched the whole second half with me. Such a cute kitty! New sub!
This move is a comedy classic.
But nothing, NOTHING compares to your cat's silent judgement at 27:17!
Love this film! Thanks for the reaction!
And, yeah. Tony S. character was high during this whole thing. :)
Yes, this movie is a lot of fun and it was fun watching you react to it.
Never Surrender is a GREAT documentary about the making of the movie. The comics also have a great story between the movie's adventure and The Journey Continues. Apparently did so well, there's a lot more GQ comics now! I thought there was only a one off "sequel"!
Enrico Colantoni is amazing in this movie as Mathesar
So different from his roles as villains in Travelers and Person of Interest, but he's become one of those ubiquitous "I know that guy....from somewhere" kind of actors.
here he was topped only by Alan Rickman....
This movie was the best non Star Trek, Star Trek show. Thank you lovely one.
Such a bittersweet, scifi adventure/comedy - glad you really understood the premise and ran with it for a great reaction! All the actors were top notch, but Tony Shalhoub is just great in this.
16:47 Kitty cat breaks are important! 🙂
In case you hadn't figured it out, Tech Sergeant Chen (Tony Shalhoub) was so chill with everything weird going on because he's SUPER stoned the whole film.
They save the Galaxy as actors but this time for real 😳. TURE LEGENDS.
One one of the best movies of its kind...
Its criminally underrated.
There's an amazing documentary about Galaxy Quest called Never Surrender. I got to see it on a one-time showing in a real theater back in pre-pandemic times. It was awesome and worthy of the film it portrays. Catch it if you ever get the chance.
It’s shown regularly on tv and was just on a couple of days ago
If you ever make your way to Seattle there's a full-sized costume of Sarris on display at the Museum of Pop Culture. Along with a ton of other music, movie and TV show memorabilia. Currently the featured exhibit is the Laika movies like Coraline, Paranorman and The Boxtrolls. That exhibit will be there until the end of summer next year
Kitty seemed as enthusiastic about his role as Alexander did. 😆
I first saw this film with the family, and my daughter-in-law's Dad was a professor of physics. Serious scientific dude. We didn't expect him to like it, but he laughed so hard he had abdominal spasms.
4:30 That’s why it’s best to go into this movie blind the first time. It’s such a perfect moment.
