I love how Alan Rickman delivers his catch phrase with apathy until he says it to the dying alien, then he means it and does it with conviction. Some great acting.
When Gwen asks the Thermians about Gilligan's Island and they respond with "Those poor people..." *I DIED.* And then on the flip-side, who would have thought that having Doctor Lazarus say the "By Grapthar's Hammer" line - with feeling - for the first time, would actually put a lump in your throat? There are so many quotable lines from this. And interestingly, many Star Trek fans put this near the top of their favorite Star Trek movie lists, even though it's not a Star Trek movie.
It literally should have been up for legit academy awards! They managed to perfectly blend spoof and homage in a way I have never seen done. Plenty of raunchy, sometimes funny full on spoofs out there but this is different in the best possible way! Chef's kiss
Still to this day my favorite line from this movie is "Lets get out of here before one of those things kills Guy" This was Missi Pyle's first movie, one of the things she remembers is that Alan Rickman would eat lunch with the rest of the cast rather than eat alone in his trailer like most big actors. Sigourney Weaver wore a blonde wig and fake bust, and from what I read she would leave the set wearing them when she could. She also said she started to think like a blonde by the end of the movie. (I think this interview was from the extras on the dvd) Patrick Stewart on Galaxy Quest "I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."
I'm so glad you posted this. I had heard about Patrick Stewart and that he liked Galaxy Quest, but reading his actual comments were so much better. It was also nice to read the other behind-the-scenes stories during the making of this movie.
For full Sam Rockwell's redemption you have to watch "Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri", for which he got an Oscar. Nice reaction, best sci-fi comedy.
This is not just a Star Trek parody - it's a Star Trek tribute and a love letter to the shows, the movies and the fans. Thank you for re-uploading it. Love your videos!
Enrico Colantoni seriously gives one of the most underrated performance ever: He has to 1) Give exposition 2) Be the front man for an alien race whose goofiness drives the plot 3) Be the anchor for most emotional scene. The scene where he says how they've discovered lies "at some great cost" in a way that's funny but hints at something darker is one of the great tonal balances I've ever seen an actor do.
Fun fact, the way the aliens talk and move is all based on his audition, he used a vocal exercise in which you hit all octaves. Casting and the director when on to show the other actors playing the aliens how the cadance was suppose to go
This parody of Star Trek is written so that non-fans can enjoy it as well. Not only does it spoof the franchise, but it also pokes fun at the celebrity rumors from the cast members. Knowing what is being spoofed adds layers to the nostalgia value in this respect - from show to bloopers to behind the scenes trivia.
Hey Daniel and Sam, another aspect of the move is Alan Rickman’s character realizing how much his character and his performance impacted those around him. --- It's one of the highlights of the movie, it really impacts when he says the line he hates the most. ---- He does it with the most feeling he's ever done, that really hits home.
It mirrors Leonard Nimoy’s experience with the Spock character. After Star Trek ended he tried to distance himself from the role due to typecasting. Over the years he embraced the character and realized what an impact his portrayal made on fans lives and our culture.
My wife and I saw this in the theater when it came out in 1999. It was the same year we got married too. This flick was so much fun! And it never gets old either. We laugh so hard every time we happen to watch it. :)
So happy you guys enjoyed this! This film was a "Love letter" to the "Star Trek" franchise and truly stands the test of time. Also, this was one of those movies that was WAY better than anyone expected or thought it ever would be.
You only need to know of Star Trek to enjoy Galaxy Quest. The chompers are from at least three episodes across the various series. Not to mention the rock monster and rudimentary glaive. "THIS EPISODE WAS BADLY WRITTEN!!!!"
Is it? It makes fun of Star Trek TOS, the TOS actors, and ST fans. ST fans have embraced it, but that doesn't mean that it's actually a ST love letter.
Johnathan Frakes (riker) and Patrick Stewart (Pickard) loved this film. George Takei (sulu) hilariously called it " a chillingly realistic documentary,"
One bit I also loved in this movie was that Tony Shaloub's character is perpetually, obviously mega-baked throughout the entire movie, and no one acknowledges it or comments on it or calls him on it. It's just there.
Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) auditioned for the part with most of the alien quirks (don't think he was responsible for the untranslated Thermian language).- the walk, the clap, the laugh - that's all his doing. The other alien acttors and extras had "alien school" every morning so they'd fit in.
I always saw this as being a very similar premise as Tropic Thunder. A bunch of actors think they are just doing another job, but end up in way over their heads once they realize things are actually real.
What I loved is how they made very clever solutions to the problems, but made them realistic for a group of actors who are out of their element to come up with.
Galaxy Quest has absolutely everything, amazing cast, great story, it's hilarious without "making fun" of the subject and somehow at the same time deeply emotional - a real gem. If you want to see Sigourney Weaver in yet another role that's again completely different and with Alan Rickman again I would recommend - Snowcake. The role was written with Alan Rickman in mind and it was him to recommend and later bring on board Sigourney - a role I would never-ever could have imagined her and man, was he right. The two mostly cary the whole movie and they crush it. It's not a well known movie and a low budget production but it's great.
The opening sequence with the convention was taken from the SNL skit with William Shatner. Y’all should check that out. It’s very funny back when SNL was actually funny. You guys should watch a movie with Justin Long called “Waiting”. Very funny and has a good cast.
This is an all time favorite, it's so much fun, especially for someone to whom the original Star Trek is so familiar. I never tire of seeing it and I've seen it dozens of times. This cast is fantastic as is everything about it.
You mentioned how good Sarris' costume was. This movie's special effects are from the famed Stan Winston Studio known for such movies as A.I., Aliens, Avatar, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands (1990), Invaders from Mars, Iron Man, Jurassic Park series, Pearl Harbor, Predator series, The Terminator series, The Thing (1982), The Time Machine (2002), and War of the Worlds (2005). The ship Protector bridge was even designed to shake making it much more realistic than shaking the camera effects.
If you want Sam Rockwell at his most hilarious check out Seven Psychopaths with Colin Farrell. It's got those Kiss Kiss Bang Bang vibes you want more of.
One of my top 25 movies of all time. I’m glad Samantha has finally seen it and enjoyed it. Such fantastic humor and surprisingly tearful heart. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.
Here's the real question: Who on earth created the ship for the show, that actually 100% worked in space, including using berilium spheres to power the drives, that actually exist outside our explored space. Termites are amongst us!
Words can't describe, how much I miss Alan Rickman. He was so amazing in Everything. One of my Favs ever and Galaxy Quest is such a good Example. An amazing Loveletter to Fandom.
Yes, it was more than PG originally. I saw it before it was cut and Fred smokes a bowl through the entire movie and watch Gwen's lips when she says "Forget that!"
Yeah I still get bummed about that line. The original “fuck that” got such a huge laugh when I saw this in the theater for the first time. I hate that even on dvd/blu-ray it’s still edited.
Long before Galaxy Quest, there was Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited, a short story in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelly, are acting on the Enterprise set at Desilu studios. During a scene in which they are standing on the transporter pads, with beaming effects to be added later, they suddenly find themselves in the transporter room of the real Enterprise, in the future, in space. The story proceeded from there, with a very similar plot line.
the sexy outfit - one of Sigourney's most significant contributions to sci-fi cinema! remember all those beauties from the old movies, wrapped from top to bottom in shiny silver spacesuits? never again!! thank you, Alien!😂
First saw this movie with a bunch of friends when we decided, on impulse, to go see a movie. We figured the cast was great and it looked fun. We never expected it to be as amazing as it is. We honestly only expected to have fun for a couple of hours. It exceeded every expectation, and has only gotten better with age.
Absolutely adore this movie, and am so glad it's gotten a well-deserved revival these days. Watch "Paul" for another love letter to the scifi genre, that like GQ still manages to be a good movie on its own. If "Galaxy Quest" is a love letter to Star Trek, and scifi fan, "Paul" is a love letter to the alien bit of the scifi genre. It's funny and nerdy, with so many easter eggs and brilliant references. Really hope you'll react to it!
Was a great movie! Glad to say I saw it in theaters back in 1999 … Extremely happy they never tried a part 2 or a spinoff. Movie stands great on its own.
Movie recommendation for you to react to: SUNSHINE (2007), a very good and underrated sci-fi thriller, with intense moments and good performances, you'll like it
Daniel, Samantha: I really appreciate you guys going back through your catalogue of videos to periodically re-upload blocked videos. Thank you for the diligence and the extra chance to (re-)enjoy your company for our favorite movies.
This was one of the movies where I think alot of people weren't expecting much but were very pleasantly surprised. I love this movie. The entire cast was fantastic.
I'd say Galaxy Quest and Tremors are two masterpieces of their genres. Impeccably written with a fun and game cast, both deserve all the praise and cult followings they have. Fav lines, "Whoever wrote this episode should die!" (Galaxy Quest), and "Damn it, listen to me. I'm older and wiser." "Yeah, well you're half right..." (Tremors) 😆
Being a Star Trek fan from childhood, I loved this movie. I also got to work with both Tony Shaloub (on an episode of Monk) and Enrico Colantoni (on an episode of Veronica Mars).
Loved the ending where the ship crashes in the convention and what happens after. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you to react to it's one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.
the general story is like the three amigos and tropic thunder. actors being believed as the real deal and realizing that their situation is actually real. uh oh.
This is my third favorite Star Trek film. The Wrath of Khan, The Journey Home, and then this. That's how much they captured the spirit of what Star Trek was to a lot of people back then.
I vaguely remember seeing advertisements for this film, and no one gave a crap. When my aunt and I rented this video for the weekend back in the early 2000’s, we probably watched it three or four times. 😂
That was its biggest problem when it came to the theatrical release. The marketing was so incredibly poor that nobody knew what it was, and it looked cheesy as hell. That has been one of the big complaints from the actors as to its poor initial performance. The opening weekend sucked, but as word of mouth got out and people began to understand what the movie was about, it stayed number 1 for four weeks straight.
Hey Daniel and Sam. What movie is complete without an awesome villain as you mentioned the attention to detail with the villain is next level. ------- I totally love the wings on his back and how they flex when he gets angry. -------- What a great movie and a great reaction.
Thanks for watching this perfect homage to all things Star Trek. Out of all the amazing performances my favorite is Sam Rockwell as Guy. In the Star Trek TV series the unfortunate and un-named "Yeoman #5" was disposable cannon fodder in every second episode. While re-watching, even though I know it's coming, his scream in the transport room still slays me. His starring performance in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is his Opus Magnum. It would be right up your alley to react to.
I really like the decision to hire Bing Crosby's granddaughter (Tasha Yar from Star Trek: The Next Generation season one) as Jason Long's mom that makes him take out the trash at the vital moment.
I watched a different person reacting to 3 amigos and commented "wait a minute this is just galaxy quest but without the big green grasshoppers no wait thats a bugs life"
I hate to be on the Rickman bandwagon, but many actors could not have sold the character of Dr. Lazarus so well; his utter disdain and hatred of his strapline - "By Grabthar's hammer" - turned into a heartfelt delivery to soothe a dying alien, it's extreme talent. Just a quick compliment - I love your reactions, guys. Keep it up. Don't forget 'Tech Sergeant Chen' - played by 'Fred Kwan' - is played by a white actor. Just something else that adds to the film's enjoyment for me.
They get some fun digs at Star Trek and its fandom. The starship runs on Beryllium spheres instead of Di-Lithium crystals (Beryllium follows Lithium in the periodic table), the Transporter always having problems like the "Digital Conveyor", the Captain losing his shirt like Captain Kirk does during fight scenes, and the female character just barely above set dressing for the show. Also the trope of the Captain developing a love interest in many episodes. Fans numbering every episode was first done by Trekkers.
There is a rumor that a prequel is in the works to the birth of the thermions . How they came across the “Historical Documents”, and their trial and errors in becoming who they ultimately are in Galaxy Quest.
One of my all time favorite movies. A really great moment at the end, that I missed the first few times I watched, is when Sarris shoots everyone, the only person who doesn't get shot is Guy.
This movie was so well crafted it stands up in it's own all the SFX is decent and it's just a lovely positive film that is basically star trek (pre 2005)
15:31 i actually have a star trek voyager magazine that has the complete lay out of the ship 😅 these guys knew exactly how to hit the feels of all the trekky nerds out there! another great reaction! 👍
Great review as always @TBR Schmitt? Would you ever consider reacting to a documentary? I think you would love ‘Searching for Sugarman’ A truly amazing story of a musician 👍
“Let’s get out of here before one of those things kills Guy” is one of my favorite and funniest lines in the movie.
I love Sam Rockwell in this. "Look around you. Maybe you can form some sort of rudimentary lathe." Sooo good.
Alan Rickman was brilliant in this. Great comedic timing on his part.
Yeah I agree Alan Rickman is hilarious it's interesting that he started acting when he was doing Broadway stage acting.
Now this film is how you end not only a year, but also a decade, and most importantly, a century. "Galaxy Quest" is a complete and total masterpiece.
AND a millenium!

2nd most emotional scene. Quellek's death and Alexander's emotional rebirth in that moment takes it for me.

This scene cracks me up so much, now that I know Sigourney wasn't told that Sam was going to scream. The look and reaction she makes lmao.

6:38 This scene always makes me laugh! "oh, commander" - Justin Long
21:10 I like how meta it is as well. Its 2024 and this is basically cinema now space and super hero films so bizarre
Oh my goodness I love this movie! It's such a feel good movie, so glad you're watching it!
I love this movie. I’ll gladly watch a re upload ❤
Guy is the only one who doesn’t get shot at the end. 😀
I really like the decision to hire Bing Crosby's granddaughter (Tasha Yar from Star Trek: The Next Generation season one) as Jason Long's mom that makes him take out the trash at the vital moment.
IIRC, there was a DVD of this where there was a second soundtrack where everyone spoke Thermian.
Supposedly Paramount is working on a series that continues the story.
Lol loved that intro! More bloopers please :)
Hugely cleaver and sweet-hearted!
Fun Fact: Sigourney Weaver actually said "F**k That!" when she saw the death traps in the engine room. You can read her lips.
In the chompers scene if you look at Sigourney Weaver's lips you'll see that she was actually saying something a bit different there at the end...
Star Trek actors faced a lot of people like these characters at conventions.
Great review as always @TBR Schmitt?
Would you ever consider reacting to a documentary? I think you would love ‘Searching for Sugarman’
A truly amazing story of a musician 👍
Such a love letter to Star Trek and scifi fandom in general
I can like this video again. I can't say how much I love Alan Rickman's performance in this
