New York City policeman John McClane (Bruce Willis) is visiting his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia) and two daughters on Christmas Eve. He joins her at a holiday party in the headquarters of the Japanese-owned business she works for. But the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists who take over the exclusive high-rise, and everyone in it. Very soon McClane realizes that there's no one to save the hostages -- but him.

Those weren't $100,000 bills, those were the bearer bonds that they were after. What makes bearer bonds such a juicy target is that when it comes to those bonds, possession isn't just 9/10ths of the law, it's the whole thing. They are entirely unregistered, so a record of ownership doesn't exist. Whoever shows up to redeem them gets the cash.

      It is in the name.
      BEARER bonds
Anyone who BEARS the bond is the presumptive owner of said bond and is entitled to be paid the amount listed.
Issuing them nowadays has been outlawed since 1982, but all legally issued bold from before can be legally redeemed.
Governments, States, Municipalities, Corporations, etc used to issue them. They are the anonymous versions of Treasury or Savings Bonds.

One thing I love about the twist in Hans' plan, that he was planning to get the authorities and the FBI involved all along, is that it's simple and plausible and doesn't have a dozen preceding steps that have to go right for it to work. There was a real risk that someone would manage to raise an alarm even without John involved, and when John does alert them early, the plan still works and it just becomes a fairly minor inconvenience for the criminals. Keeping it simple like that helps make the story feel more believable

Hi, Clariss! Here's a true story for you: When I used to have Christmas Eve with my Mom and Dad, after we'd exchange gifts to each other, we'd sit down and watch "Die Hard" every year. It was our little holiday tradition we had together. My Mom and Dad are gone now, but every year at Christmas time, when "Die Hard" is shown or even brought up in discussion, it makes me think fondly of my Mom and Dad and the good holidays with them. THAT'S why this is a Christmas movie. Thank you, Clariss, for everything you do!

Funny thing about the scene in the elevator shaft: the stuntman was actually meant to grab the first vent passage that John reaches for, but lost the grip, fell down and grabbed the one below instead. The shot worked so well that it was used in the final cut

    • @DocuzanQuitomos
      @DocuzanQuitomos 9 месяцев назад +1

According to the Netflix documentary "The movies that made us", it was a bit more flawed than that: in reality, the stuntman couldn't grab anyone and he fell all the way down (the elevator shaft was a set built with a couple of floors and a pool at the bottom, for safety; so the guy didn't die, in spite of the accident).
The sequence was cleverly saved by the magic of editing; the take where the stuntman/McClane grabs the vent entrance was filmed later and they just used what was necessary of the take that didn't work and "voilá!", there was a useful sequence.

What's weird to think about these days is that Bruce Willis wasn't really thought of as an action star back when this was made. At this point, he was best known for being the male lead in the sitcom Moonlighting alongside Cybil Shepherd. It's a similar situation to when Chris Pratt went from being in Parks & Rec to being in Guardians of the Galaxy.
He was (somewhat controversially) cast in the role of John McClane specifically because he wasn't one of the big action stars of the 80s - he wasn't a towering physique like Schwarzenegger or Stallone - he's meant to be an ordinary guy in over his head.
Willis initially turned down the role - he was still in production on Moonlighting when he was first considered for the role - but when production halted when his co-star Cybil Shepherd became pregnant, his schedule opened up.

    "Welcome to the party, pal!"
It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN off the top of Nakatomi Plaza. 😎
    Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁
Fun Fact: In 2007, Bruce Willis donated John McClane's undershirt to the Smithsonian Museum.
Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane (Bruce Willis) falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls.
When Worlds Collide Fact: The scene in which Gruber (Alan Rickman) and McClane (Bruce Willis) meet for the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent.
Casting Notes Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first American film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career.
Location Location Fact: The fictional Nakatomi Plaza is the headquarters of 20th Century Studios, so the studio could use one of its own buildings and didn't have to hold back on stunts and action sequences. While Jeb Stuart was writing the screenplay, he did a tour of the building, and immediately incorporated some of the locations and objects he found there into his script as set pieces. The company charged itself rent for the use of the then-unfinished building. Some of the middle floors were occupied by legal and administrative departments, so only empty floors were used for filming. Still, the filming of scenes that involved gunfire had to be postponed until after hours because some of the employees from the active floors started to complain about the noise.

Negotiable bearer bonds were a form of substitute currency. The premise was that whoever held the bonds could cash them. There was no proof of ownership required. The US government stopped issuing them in 1982, and most other advanced countries subsequently stopped their use in the years that followed. This was due to their popularity in money laundering, tax evasion, and other criminal activities.

-Of all of the movies in the franchise, this was the only one I never saw in the theatre.
-You mentioned that this wasn’t tied to the other movies. However, the bad guy in Die Hard With A Vengeance(played by Jeremy Irons) is the brother of Hans with him taking revenge on John. Another fun thing is one of main cops in that one is played by someone who played one of the cops in the first one.
-A pair of notes concerning Agent Johnson. What I found funny is how, in the credits, they’re listed as “Big Johnson” and “Little Johnson.” In Live Free or Die Hard, John is visiting the FBI office when he meets one of the agents. He asks the agent what his name is and he replies “Agent Johnson”, which makes John pause for a second.
-A year before this, Tom Hanks and Shelley Long starred in the movie “The Money Pit.” Alexander Godunov, who played Karl, plays a former boyfriend of Long’s character who is the lead conductor of an orchestra. I’ve seen both movies a number of times over the past “Fuck, I’m Old” years. It was maybe two years ago when I watched it again and, during the wedding at the end, realized that the song he’s conducting during it is “Ode To Joy”, which is THE song in “Die Hard.” When I realized it, my jaw dropped and I couldn’t stop laughing while feeling like an idiot.
-A couple of years ago, the Die Hard battery company released a pair of commercials with Bruce Willis as John McClane. In the first one, they included De’voreaux White, who played Argyle. In the second one, the villain was Clarence Gilyard, who played Theo.
-In the original book, John was visiting his daughter, who ends up falling out the building at the end.
-After this, there was a host of “Die Hard On//In A _________” movies like “Speed” and “Under Siege.” The one that has to be the closest to the original is “White House Down” with Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and James Woods. A really good movie that Tatum’s character references in “22 Jump Street.”
-If you want another great Christmas action movie, check out “Violent Night” with Santa Claus(Played by David Harbour) having to save a family being taken hostage by terrorists. Imagine “Die Hard” combined with “Hone Alone” with the heart of “Miracle on 34th Street” done by the studio that brought you “Nobody” and the “John Wick” series.

Pretty much a flawless movie in my book. So often imitated, but nobody has come close to this. The airtight script, the snappy dialogue, Jan de Bont acing the cinematography, the music is tense when it needs to be and jubilant when it needs to be, Rickman is perfect (in his first screen role ever!) and Bruce absolutely owns the quippy McClane character. John McTiernan was on an amazing roll back in the day...

Hans and John meeting was not in the script originally. Alan Rickman while fitting for a whole fighting gear started musing - coming from the theater and having no clue how Hollywood works - that being the Boss and having so many thugs it doesn't really make sense to wear such gear and he could wear a suit instead and if he would, he could run into John pretending to be a hostage... The rest is history. It was the first time to see an antagonist like this, cultivated and intelligent that you kind of liked (especially when compared to the morron police chief). Hans Gruber is a legend as is Alan Rickman.
BTW they had to cut around Alan to show him from far or back when he fired a gun because he couldn't help himself flinching 😅

It's so fun seeing a new generation react to action films of old and see them actually getting the hype. Realizing many of these films weren't dumbed-down mindless violence boys liked just because they were being boys. Some action films from back then were that, yes, but they never became as popular either. The script matter. Always has, always will. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

Interesting film fact, the last scene where Hans is dangling in the air holding the rolex (this movie really ties all the threads nicely), how they got the shot of Rickman's face is that there was a camera filming him from the front while he was really suspended in the air at a height of something like 20 feet and the wider shot of somebody falling was a stuntman.
The idea was to make Rickman really fall so the camera could get his reaction.
McThiernan (the director) instructed Rickman that they would count to 3 and let him fall but he (Mc Thiernan) wanted a real reaction of shock from Rickman so withoout telling him he was let down at two.
You can see the shock of surprise and even fear as he falls and that's completely genuine.

Fun fact: While Rickman had been on the stage and as gest in British TV shows for a decade at that time, this was his very first appearance on the big screen.
Hard to believe but yeah, he's killing it in his first movie.
As for Bruce Willis, he had small cameo roles in movies since 1980, and a bigger role (including lead) in two movies that were flops before Die Hard.
He also appeared in an episode of Miami Vice where he plays an abusive and violent arms dealer.
He was mainly known for starring in the detective, romantic comedy show Moonlighting next to Sybill Shepeard.
So when he landed the lead on Die Hard, to the public at large he was either unknown, or that guy in the comedy detective show.
Die hard launched the career of Willis and Rickman and they were both fantastic in it.

You talked about how the story seemed well thought out and tight, and this is partly due to the movie being based on a book. They used several scenarios in the film that were in the book, and it helped alot i would say. Great story, great acting, great visuals. A classic for a reason

@@harryballsak1123 The only thing that Christmas contributes to the plot is it gets McClane to LA. A birthday or graduation could do the same to get him in the building. In regards to the music ... well ya that the time of year of course they are playing Christmas music it helps sell the time of year that the movie is supposed to take place. There are several movies that take place during a holiday with that holiday's music without being a holiday movie. (Die hard also released in the middle of the summer)

The reason the film seams so real is because the actors were allowed a lot of improvisation.
Hans commenting how mr takagi won't be joinging them and grabbing food from the buffet table was improvised by rickman.
As was the two terrorists having a bet.
Same with the terrorist grabbing the chocolate bar before fighting swat.
Though the most real one was McClain miasing the air vent... The stunt maan actuallly did mess up the jump, missed the vent he waas aiming for but caught the one below it but they kept the shot anyway.
Another one is the "hans bubby" the line was add libbed which is why rickman looked so confused it was genuine
At the end when McClain says "hi honey" it was a throw in by willis (thhis was his first action fillm prior to this he did comedy) and that look of surprise on rickman's face as he falls... Genuine. The crewmaan holding him saidd they were going to drop him on the count of 3... They dropped him on 2... Apparently he was a little upset afterwards

Couple of facts. This was Alan's first movie film role was only in theater before this. His reaction at the end was real as director had them drop him earlier than he was told to expect. The young daughter is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in one of her first film roles as well. The things they were grabbing from the vault were bonds. Basically a big legal IOU note. It's sort of like stocks in a company but instead of having a share in a company for an investment. The bonds are like a loan that the company takes from someone with a promise to payback at a set date with interest and re often traded for their face value (much like how bank notes are used) but when matured they are paid back with interest but if the company goes bust or doesn't have the money they can become worthless.
They're stealing them because they can trade them in without need of ID meaning they can't be traced. And by the time they are matured and the company is paying them back they've probably been sold to different people multiple times

Hey, Clariss! I just wanted to give a little fun fact - not about the movie, but about Alan Rickman himself.
When you called him "Sir. Alan Rickman," I wondered if he was ever actually knighted by the queen. I looked it up, and he was one of many British celebrities to turn down the honor (his reasons were never made public). Next to him were David Bowie and John Cleese.

    • @asterix7842
      @asterix7842 9 месяцев назад +2

Even if he had accepted, my understanding is that a knighthood ends at death, so it would be improper to refer to someone as "Sir" after that person dies.
I can understand John Cleese turning it down. He spent a large part of his career making fun of the aristocracy and the upper class.

One thing that some people don't pick up on when watching the movie, and I think it's clarified later is, apparently there's a deleted scene where John McClane kills one of the terrorists and notices that he has a specific type of watch. All of the terrorists are wearing the same model of watch, and that's how John knew not to put bullets in the gun he handed to Hans, because of his watch.

19:29 "And, yes. I understand that, in retrospect, that was filmed at a time where locking your doors wasn't a commonow as it is, _now."_
Ah. _Halloween._ I _know_ that movie. Okay. I'll proceed to _that_ video of yours, next.
But let me chime in, here, to say that it also points to the fact, I think, that Haddonfield is supposed to be a relatively small _town._ Small towns tend to be much less security oriented than big cities just because the citizens all tend to _know_ each other and _trust_ each other. You tend not to feel the need to lock the door to keep out people you _know._
As I understand it, it's actually much the same way in _Canada,_ nowadays. Canadians are much more likely to _know_ each other and _trust_ each other. They tend to leave their doors _unlocked,_ during the day. They lock 'em at _night,_ of course. They understand the need for doors and windows that are _able_ to lock. But it's not uncommon, in the middle of the day, to go to a house in Canada and find the doors and windows unlocked.

Yes a very tight script and everything in the movie is done for a reason. John being told to take off his shoes in the beginning led to his feet getting cut up by the glass. Holly usuing her maiden name kept her from being discovered as Johns wife till almost the end. John had his shirt off in Hollys office and left the shirt in there when stuff started happening. Then when the couple came out half naked, the bad fuys assumed the shirt was the guys. Even Hans telling John his name was Bill Clay. The group probably each had fake IDs of spmebody in the building so after the explosion they could claim they worked there and were lucky to get out.

I'm glad you liked it. I was actually working at a movie theater when this came out, so I have seen it soooo many times. One quick note on the zeitgeist element you noticed. Not only was 1988 before 9/11, it was before 1989 and the end of the Cold War. And the mentaility shown in the display is _why_ 9/11 worked. People expected demands, not kamikazes. Otherwise, the planes that hit the towers would never have gotten there, because the crew and passengers would have overpowered the terrorists.

It was not $100,000 US currency bills in the vault. What you saw were private corporation bearer bond certificates.
However, there did exist US currency in $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 denominations, but these were phased out in the 1990's and 2000's as a way to make things more difficult for drug dealers to move their cash.
