    The movie's comedy is its highlight until the climax, when it suddenly becomes a pretty serious and dark film. And Flik's little speech after he's had the shit beaten out of him is glorious in its populist intensity.
    "You're wrong, Hopper. Ants are not meant to serve grasshoppers. I've seen these ants do great things, and year after year they somehow manage to pick food for themselves *and* you. So-so who is the weaker species? Ants don't serve grasshoppers! It's *you* who need *us*! We're a lot stronger than you say we are... and you know it, don't you?"

    I actually disagree with the point on the visuals being better in Antz. I think Bugs Life has a very under-appreciated animation. The bugs may not look exactly like real bugs, but there were so many moments in the film where the behaviors and animations of the bugs looked much more lifelike, quick, and fun to look at than in Antz. Where the animation in Antz is more cut and dry. Making all the bugs move and behave very human-like for most of the film, or just sluggish. Bugs Life managed to make bugs look more humanoid, but also put so much good detail into the fact that they were bugs, nonetheless. I mean, even the bird that attacks in the middle of the film was animated very realistically, and was very fun to see at a much larger scale. It made that bird look so menacing despite how cute it would look to us. And, then the part with the rain falling down, and the bugs flying through it. Like, man that still looks great today.

      I personally think that as far as art-style goes, Bugs Life looks *miles* better than Antz.
      The animators on Bugs Life were fully aware of the limitations of CGI at the time and so they designed the film's characters and overall art style to look more simplified and cartoony which, IMO, has helped it visually age much better. Antz on the other hand tried way too hard to look "realistic" and the end result took it straight into the Uncanny Valley.

      He thinks it's visually more interresting. A Bug's Life has nice colors like he says and looks more like a cartoon. Antz has a very different style from any animated movie, the ants look more human, it looks dark, it has a bigger inviroment. I don't think one looks better than the other but Antz did something completely different.

    • @simounobrien9096
      @simounobrien9096 4 года назад +2

      hmmm, Antz actually got the scale of epicness right compared to A Bug's Life. Be realistic here, why does a Caterpillar look like it is only 3 times the size of an ant when in real life, they are literally 10 times larger? Or a Rhinoceros Beetle looking like it is a scale to the Ants like a Car is to a human when in real life, they would have been the size of houses.
      Antz on the other hand got the insect scales pretty well. The Termites may be a tad exaggerated, though to be fair, it made them more intimidating. The brief moment with the praying mantis is incredibly accurate, the wasps were cleverly scaled.
      Yeah, idk about you guys but Antz just had the size scaling done way better than A Bug's Life.
      So, in terms of animation? Antz again. I absolutely love the whole world of Antz compared to A Bug's Life. It is far grittier but at the same time, the beautiful places actually would have looked like nothing, if the soundtrack wasn't present..... Oh yeah, listen to the soundtrack of Antz and tell me that it doesn't fit the mood of the scenes.

    I find this film is much more quotable than Antz was. Sure, Antz was a pretty good film but mechanically A Bug's Life works better. I love how creative they were with their material (literally). Flik was one heck of an innovator, using the same design philosophy as Nintendo believe it or not but only out of necessity not financial reasons. It reminded me of how intuitive Gadget was with what was available. I also loved that A Bug's Life was a spin on two established and beloved stories merged into one. Aesop's Ant and the Grasshopper and the Seven Samurai. Antz was edgy, but A Bug's Life was more memorable. I find it also interesting that PDI, the studio that worked on Dreamworks' premiere animated film, had done work on TRON - one of my all time favorite films. Seems like PDI was in cahoots with Katzenberg the entire time... I'm kidding.

    I'll admit that A Bug's Life was not PIxar's best movie. But it is vastly underrated and the only reason why I think this movie is not as heavily regarded is because of outside issues.
    First off, it did have Antz as a competitor. And while Antz is a fine movie in its own right, I don't think that the fact that both movies feature talking insects that came out around the same time should be held against either of them.
    Secondly, it is an adaptation of an older story, Seven Samurai. I know that we're weird about adaptations nowadays and yeah, you kinda want something more original, especially seeing how original and inspired Toy Story was, but I don't think adaptations in and of themselves are the problem. It's just when they're shitty that we have a problem. And really, A Bug's Life was not a bad retelling of that kind of story.
    This movie had a lot of amazing scenes and great humor. I'll agree that you don't immediately remember Flik, Atta, The Queen (all most, including myself, remember is Phyllis Diller), Dot, or any of the other ants. And that definitely is a deterrent when they're the main characters. But I wouldn't call them, or at least all of them, completely forgettable.
    And not to mention that this movie had one hell of a villain. Hopper is horribly underrated and while most may not agree with me, I'd consider him up there with Scar. Yeah, Hopper isn't nearly as thematic (a Disney villain song does go a long way), but he replaces that with a lot of wit and intimidation. The "if you let one ant stand up to us" scene is incredible and is probably one of my favorites in Pixar history just because of how blunt, powerful, and attention-grabbing he was in it.
    The last thing, and the thing that in my experience nobody really seems to notice, is one of the messages it tries to impart. While the big one is, "even if you're an outcast, a misfit, or someone who doesn't go along with the crowd, be proud of that fact and you can still make a difference", another one really struck a cord with me and it's amazing how many people miss it is this: "If you continuously oppress the ones beneath you, they will inevitably revolt against you." The one thing that Hopper feared more than anything was the ants he lorded over figuring out that even though that individually they were weaker, if they united against the grasshoppers, they wouldn't stand a chance. (Again, going back the scene I described above.) This is a timeless message. Again, it's nothing new, but it's still something that people should take with them and it's very much woven into the story. Look back on history whenever there was some sort of uprising or revolution. It happens time and again. The fact that this kid's movie was able to deliver a message that has stuck with me to this day so effectively is definitely worth praise.
    All in all, this move is very good. Again, not the best, and one thing that I did forget to mention is that one of Pixar's big things is making an emotional connection which this movie didn't do all that well. But still, I consider this to be one of their better works that tend to get overlooked. I mean, if Cars is considered good enough to spawn way too many sequels, this one has to be at least that good as well.

    This actually is my favourite Pixar film, it might have the depth of up coco or toy story but for me the Rich colours in this film are gorgeous, the music and atmosphere is top notch with every intense scene feeling really intense and every gentle scene feeling so relaxing you could live in this world, the comedy is great a good mix of slapstick and clever wordplay and visual humour and for me the best thing in this movie is actually the characters. Yes Flik and hopper are obvious good and bad guys but so what, hopper is still an intimidating villain who actually really goes out of his way to show how bully psychology works and just what he will do to make the ants feel weak and do what he wants. Flik meanwhile is such an inventive character like he's quick thinking and creative but he's quirky and awkward getting overly excited and also being very clumsy but he always tries his best to fix problems. I also love his speech to hopper at the end about how the ants can do so much more than he can and that hopper is scared of them not the other way around. Plus everything with the circus bugs, which makes up at least 2/3's of the movie is hilarious and fantastic. I never tire of watching this film even if not everything is perfect

      +Jonathan Kimmel The reason the liar reveal works in Rango is because usually the liar revealed trope focuses on the characters who were lied to and leads to a bunch of moping before the plot itself can advance again. On the other hand, the liar revealed also ends up leading to Rango discovering who he is, as well as discovering what happened to the water. When Rango goes back to town he isn't treated negatively by the townsfolk and he doesn't have to prove himself. He ends up saving the day, and that's proof that he cares. Basically, the liar revealed was used to advance the plot, including an excuse to bring in Jake, rather than a way to extend the script with hollow content.

      @isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 3 года назад

      That's not true. The Emperor's New Groove's review was a mess because he goes out of his way to say how this or that doesn't work without actually explaining why it doesn't work, with the villains being great as a tiny detail. This review may not always be accurate but he actually analyses the film, like how the setup and characters are completely different from Toy Story. And he does try to be fair to this film by looking at it as its own thing instead of always comparing it to Toy Story and Antz

    One issue I have with this movie is the "Liar revealed" aspect. But not for the reason you may think. Rather its because Flik gets chewed out for lying about the circus bugs being warriors, but Flik never calls out Princess Atta for sending him to the city to find the circus bugs, just as a method to get him to stay outta their way while they tried to fix his mess. Like maybe Flik could feel betrayed cause he genuinely tried to redeem himself, he thought he was given a chance to do so, only for reality to bitch slap him, so when Dot tried to convince him to return to the island, Flik could've been like "Why should I?!". Flik would feel too betrayed and would want NOTHING to do with Princess Atta and could care less if she and the queen get screwed over, and then Dot would use the rock as a seed metaphor, Flik would give it some thought, hesitate a little, until finally reluctantly getting the nerve to come back.

    I like both films for different reasons.
    Ants is more about a worker ant who is told he will only ever be a worker ant, so he tries to be a warrior ant. It kind of plays with the idea of having dreams and trying to make them happen even when others say it wont work, and deals more with the life of an ant colony.
    A Bug's Life kind of reminds me of "The Magnificent Seven" where a villainous gang decides to take control of a small remote western town, and to save it someone from the town tries to find men to fight off this gang. Which makes the whole circus bugs thing even funnier for me. Plus I like how in the end the ants figure out how so save themselves and that all they need is each other. The Magnificent Seven was a great action film, but the towns folk just sit around letting these men die for them. I like the scene where Hopper is explaining why they go back every year, because he understands that the only power he actually has over the ants is fear, and like any bully he enjoys having that power.

    To me, this film will always hold a special place in my heart. Despite the unfortunate revelations surrounding Kevin Spacey's grooming background, I still think Hopper's a great villain and his death was the first major one in their catalogue of baddies. Flik was a likeable protagonist who simply wanted to do the right thing, but everyone was against him throughout the movie, though slowly people opened the eyes and realised that he never meant any harm, and only wanted what was best for the colony. Even if he did lie to them, it was done to avoid complications while building the bird, and to give them hope. Plus, while some folks might have issues with Atta, I've always liked her on a personal level. Sure, she can be harsh on Flik, but she's stressed and is about to possess the throne as the new Queen Ant, so I can understand her frustrations with Flik at the beginning, though I always hated most of the council for how they treated him, especially the foreman and the curmudgeon. Dot is the MVP. :)
    The circus bugs were a nice inclusion as well. While they were hesistant to help out to begin with, I love how they changed their minds and returned, helping Flik to defeat Hopper and the Grasshoppers. Manny and Gypsy were a cute older couple dynamic, Tuck and Roll were funny and acted as the film's comic relief, Rosie was sweet-natured, a vast contrast to what actual black widows are like, Dung was a gentle giant, and as for Hemlick, Francis and Slim, I think those three had some laughout moments too. I loved how even the ringmaster, P.T. Flea had a change of heart too.

    I feel good, fuzzy and warm watching A Bug's Life. It's a chill, smooth sail, and a very good watch.
    The two times I watched Antz, the first because it was on cable and the second because I actively searched for it, I felt disgusted, uneasy, and it was definitely not a good time. I also don't think much of Woody Allen and his speech pattern, so it didn't help much that it was a Woody Allen tipe character voice by the man himself.
    That's basically it. I watched A Bug's Life a shit ton of times when I was young, and I tripped balls when I got to buy it from a closing VHS rent place. To me it's definitely the better movie.

    It’s no toy story, but I just rewatched a bugs life and had a good time with it. The circus bugs are the highlight of course, but after watching toy story again and realizing how quaint and small of a film it is, i did like how dark and tough a bugs life got for a kids movie. I’m not saying dark is better, it was just nice to have a change of tone after the relatively light (but still better) toy story. Even though they ant characters aren’t great, the movie takes their plight so seriously that it’s hard for me not to get invested watching it.

    Also, I like this film, but one thing that's always bugged me is that no one ever calls out the ant colony for being a bunch of f#$king hypocrites. They lie to Flik originally making him believe that he's off on some grand adventure searching for warrior bugs when they really just wanted him gone. Yet when the jig is up that he accidentally brought back circus bugs, Princess Atta and the colony decide to banish Flik for lying. Screw these people.
