Most bowlers have been shown to chuck to a certain degree according to the old rules. To the naked eye ie in 2D Murali's action does look suss because of his physical deformities (weirdly bent arm and his weird shoulder and wrist joints) and hyperextension as you see from some fast bowlers. So the same physical abnormalities that gave him an advantage also caused him a lot of grief unfortunately. I think this same umpire called him even when Murali bowled leggies what an idiot. Maybe Murali should have done one of those demonstrations where he bowled with a steel cast/brace on in Australia like he did in Eng and India to show the Australian public that he's no cheat. That would have helped people see the optical illusion for themselves because even when he bowled with the steel cast/brace on there looks to be a kink in his action.

I recall when the uniform 15 deg rule was first introduced Aussie media spread so much misinformation saying it was to protect Murali. The rule in reality was changed mainly because a lot of fast bowlers were shown to be going over 10 deg (limit for fast bowlers back then) quite regularly.
