Most bowlers have been shown to chuck to a certain degree according to the old rules. To the naked eye ie in 2D Murali's action does look suss because of his physical deformities (weirdly bent arm and his weird shoulder and wrist joints) and hyperextension as you see from some fast bowlers. So the same physical abnormalities that gave him an advantage also caused him a lot of grief unfortunately. I think this same umpire called him even when Murali bowled leggies what an idiot. Maybe Murali should have done one of those demonstrations where he bowled with a steel cast/brace on in Australia like he did in Eng and India to show the Australian public that he's no cheat. That would have helped people see the optical illusion for themselves because even when he bowled with the steel cast/brace on there looks to be a kink in his action.

@@suddonlee4326 You need to watch the whole video about that steel brace, it was filmed after they had to rewrite the rule to allow 15 degrees deflection to prevent him being called.
@@staus949 Nope actually the rule was 5 degrees initially for spinners not 15 deg. I recall when the uniform 15 deg rule was first introduced Aussie media spread so much misinformation saying it was to protect Murali. The rule in reality was changed mainly because a lot of fast bowlers were shown to be going over 10 deg (limit for fast bowlers back then) quite regularly.
@@suddonlee4326 Thanks for the clarification, I can't remember the exact details, but I was pretty sure the Aussie media fell into line with the ICC message which is why the umpire even in this game was being criticized heavily. A conspiracy "nut" might say that the timing as you have laid it out may have been "coincidental''.

This drama was created by Australia which resulted two year ban for Murali which will help to have Shane Warne's name in the record book for the leading wicket taker in test cricket all time. But Murali came back strongly and put his name on top with 800wickets...Murali,a great bowler. Being an Indian I wanted Murali to retire with 800wickets as he was bowling against India in his farewell test match.
Ranatunga was an amazing leader. At a time when subcontinent players (especially in away tours) would come across as meek and subservient, this man took the fight to the Aussie bullies and won many hearts.

He made his ODI debut in a match between Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Brisbane in January, 1996. He immediately became controversial, no-balling Muralitharan seven times, and continuing to do so even when he switched to bowling legbreaks, which are regarded as being impossible to throw. This led to Muralitharan being dropped by Sri Lanka for the rest of the tour, as he was unable to bowl without being called. Emerson continued to officiate in ODIs for the next three years, standing in nine more games, all in Australia, but it was his last game which overshadowed even the first.
On 23 January 1999 in Adelaide, standing at square leg, Emerson once again called Muralitharan, leading to Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga to lead his team off the field in protest and consult team management and the match referee. The match later continued after Emerson threatened to award the match to England, with Muralitharan confined to bowling legbreaks; Emerson claimed that cricket was controlled by Asian countries. Mahela Jayawardene went on to score a century and the Sri Lankans won in the last over with Muralitharan scoring the final runs.
Emerson was subsequently stood down, and then was not reappointed to officiate again, claimed he had been asked to no-ball Murali by an Australian official and was ignored once the incident became a major issue. "I was called to a meeting with him (Australian Cricket Board Official) and, knowing that I had called some other players, he told me I had set standards in certain areas which I should uphold in Adelaide" Emerson said. "Yet everything blew up after I called Murali and when I saw him again he wouldn't even look at me".[1] He subsequently retired from cricket, and as of November 2004, is the president of Swimming Western Australia. However, he remained defiant, saying that Muralitharan's action was "worse than ever". However, cricket commentator Peter Roebuck labelled Emerson a "nincompoop".[2]
As of early 2011, Emerson is working as a senior investigator in the corporate governance directorate of the Department of Health of Western Australia. He remains defiant about Muralitharan's bowling.
But these controversies didn't effect murali and he went on to become a legend.... One of the highest wicket takers in cricket... Respect...
