He may have had a substandard average in limited overs cricket. But his presence was enough to make the bowlers shiver. On his day he used to change the game on its head and also used to have an impact in the series. Same was with sehwag and yuvraj for india.

We all Sri Lankans are so grateful for Indian and Pakistan sides as well. They showed their warm hearted Brotherhood towards us by voluntary playing a friendly match as a one team with SL when Australia and WI cornered SL by refusing to play in Colombo. That also a rare occurrence that India and Pakistan formed a one side and played as a one team. Legendary Wasim Akram was humble enough to play in a team which Azar gave the captaincy. what a time.. I felt, at a time when SL was terrorized by LTTE, India and Pakistan playing in a team in SL was felt like how great the humanity could be despite all instability in our region..!!! Colombo stadium became a land of peace that day...!

Equality had never been a problem in Sri Lanka, be it Sports, politics or businesses....there were many good tamil leaders, sportsman(you can google yourself) and today there are many successful tamil businessmen rather than anyone else, so :D i guess I have answered your question literally in that sense.

The War is won when you have the Element of Surprise. SL cricket stunned the whole Cricketing world with the new strategy on 1996. They had both the explosive opening who totally unsettled Opening bowlers with their hitting. Middle order will rescue( Against India in Semi's) if opening fails and Roshan mahanama was batting at 7th position !!!!. Even Dharmasena scored fifty against India ( in semis ) at position 8 !! Also Jayasurya and Arvainda can bowl full quota of overs. They played like a team!!.. last but not the least. Its Mad max( Aravinda') Batting.. He is simply awesome and hit a great form at the right time. Great Teamwork. SL winning 1996 is fascinating story in World Cricket.

I don't know if there is a better fairytale in cricketing world, or any other sport for that matter. it is the tale of how a bunch of part-time bank clerks, sales-reps and insurance brokers led by the best cricket captain/leader, defeated the best professional cricket team in the world. For our generation, this memory itself is enough to bring lifelong hapiness.

This documentary is really extraordinary! Humbly thank you for bringing the history back.
And in the semis, when the Indian side was about to lose, fans started to throw glass bottles into the ground. Aravinda was fielding at the boundary line and then this little man named Upul Chandana went to Arjuna and asked him to take Aravinda out of the danger zone, near to the pitch, and volunteered himself to the danger at boundaries, because he knew Aravinda was the one who should have well protected for the finals than himself.
Of course at the finals, the Pakistani and the same Indian fans astoundingly supported SL to beat Aussies, which again I think should have mentioned here. They all were a part of this victory.

This is everything the current Sri Lankan team lacks. I was 16 when I watched the legendary 96 world cup victory. A Sri Lankan team had not even played a semi final match before 1996. All odds were against them apart from the talent, courage, and the discipline. The whole world never thought SL would win the Wills World Cup 1996 but almost every Sri Lankan did. Like the Melbourne Cup Day - every match in that tournament where Sri Lanka played the whole country just stopped and watched every ball. I even heard that that both LTTE carders and army service men went out in the open, danced and fired shots at the sky the night the final was won (and later were punished). Interestingly, I never heard one of these great players (or the greats who followed them between 1996 - 2015) talking bad on media, blaming supporters and management, or a single indiscipline act. Sad to say, after 2015 I did not even bother following Sri Lankan cricket. I watched all most all other nations play - but never the SL team - simply because I wanted to spare myself the despair. I don't think I would ever see such talented, spirited, and gentleman lot of cricketers playing for SL team ever in my lifetime again.
