    The problem there with them them being shiny is you didn't let them dry out. They have to be dry before you cure or they look like shit like that lol. If they are properly cleaned and fully dry they will be perfect when cured.

      It also depends on the type of product used to clean, the best is 99% IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol)but the more you use it, the more it will get cloudy and tacky and lose efficiency at cleaning.
      The best is multiple washes : 1st in cloudy/old IPA to remove most of the resin, then a 2nd in a cleaner IPA and sometimes (if small/detailed bits) a 3rd wash with pure IPA for best cleaning potential. I don't use a wash station but multiple containers with the different levels of IPA.

    • @Emberbro
      @Emberbro 8 месяцев назад

      I’d endorse 99% IPA also
      When it comes out this shiny after a cure, you can still do a matte primer.

      Big time yeah, if it's proper resin water won't do at all. I used water washable resin at the start and it's pointless. It's more brittle, more expensive and you have to let the water evaporate anyway cause you can't pour it down the drain lol. Might aswell just use standard resin and IPA first and then do a water and Ultrasonic after if it's still stubborn.@@Emberbro

      @reddragon4482 8 месяцев назад

      I tried rushing at the start and just gave them a quick wash and put them in the cure and it looks desparate looking lol. Put them in 99% IPA and put the wash and cure on as long as you can ( a good 30 mins usually). After that would them on a mesh rack and let them air out naturally in a warm dark place. I'd do it over night usually maybe an entire day. Wehn they dry out naturally is perfect, IPA is alchohol after all so evaporates way faster than water. I slowed my printing time down a lot to avoid fialed prints so I maybe get a good 2-3 prints a day if I need to and I just leave them on racks over night and next day I will cure the whole lot and do it systematically in batches. It just makes things way easier.@@margaretwood152

    I use water washable resin to save the extra cost of IPA and have found the resins to still be great.

Buying a box of 20 marines for horus heresy, and printing some upgrades is way easier then printing the whole bloody thing. If you assume a 5% - 10% fail rate, it's just more worth while buying the base of stuff and printing the smaller add ons.

    print->wash them in ISO/water (depends on the Resin)->short drop in hot water to pull of the supports->let it dry firmly->cure it under UV. i highly recommend a wash and cure Station. for normal Minis 4 to 6 Minutes washing and 1 min UV light. bigger Minis max 2 Minutes. the shinyness is Absorbed water
    Printing is not cheaper. Good stl cost money. resin, especially good one is costly. iso is costly, fep foliage costs. if you use cheap resin, you will have to buy a flex resin to mix in, or youre minis are brittle like glass. Yeah if you compare it with forgeworld prices...then its a better deal, but normally buyin a pack of intercessors and print some shoulderpads, aquilas and helmets with heraldy is the way to go. Or to print minis in better which are only available in failcast. i would recommend gw to sell stls with a nft timer instead of made to order

Can't really expect it to look better than official if you are doing that, not really a fair test but a fun video.

  • @TheGravespawn
    @TheGravespawn 8 месяцев назад +4

    As others have said, though. Parts look like they got a little over-exposed. They also look shiny, which MIGHT be the resin's finish, but usually that should not be the case after a clean and cure. Shine generally means uncured resin, which is bad. I have printed loads of the GTS parts that you did, and when you dial your printer in, you could have ripped off that plate's print in 2 hours or so, depending on settings.
    You're getting more the hang of it by the end of the video, which is good to see. Really screw around with the exposure times, though. You can REALLY knock it down, and the other setting to play with is the time off/lift speed. If you chop that down on time off, and up the lift speed within safe limits, you can make that thing sing and pump out layers at double the speed.
    What's being missed here to some degree is... yeah, it took you all day to print a plate of parts. You printed in a fraction of the price enough to outfit a giant chunk of a whole army. So one day of printing for a whole month of minis? Fair trade.

With a 3d-printer it's much faster and since I've done it for a while now it doesn't feel like a lot of work, just slice, print, put it in the cleaner and curer. Most work is done by machines. The resins also got so much better over the last few years. The first stuff I had was very toxic, needed to be cleaned with isopropal and was very very brittle. With (resin) 3dprinting there are some pretty serious health risks involved if you don't take the necessary precautions with ventilation. I'd like to start 3d printing, because it is cheap, once you get past the initial £200+ cost and so much can be done. But, the caveats are the learning curve, even with youtubers tutorials, not everyone has a desktop PC, time, cleaning, space, cost of some STLs - it's predictably getting costly for good "professional" STLs, and there's a lot of "junk" out there if you want low cost/free stuff. Those who 3d print and think GW's going to go under because of 3d printing are living in a very myopic bubble.

    Enjoyed the video and now know not to get a 3D printer. I haven’t got the extra spare time to learn how to get it perfect, and would rather just throw some money at GW and know what I’m getting; ripped off, but also quality plastic ready to go without the need to learn another skill. Cheers fellas 👍🏼

    Hi Pat, having been in the same boat experience wise I've learned that the cleaning is your most imoritant part. Don't be afraid to stick those pieces in the wash for 30min if you want, that uncured resin needs to wash off. The curing is not as important, I let my pieces cure in ambient light on my shelf, I only cure larger models or thick pieces

    I think the key for stuff like this is ‘less is more’. I’ve been printing for some time now, but part of me feels like I can’t mix it with GW models. I have no problem printing terrain or separate models etc. but I feel like the ‘purist’ in me can’t mix the two completely. I don’t know lol. Having seen how some of these parts fit so well may change my mine. Though I wish someone would make some first born bits. I’m really not a fan of Primaris.
    On the printer side by the way. Joining some bottom layers of the supports in a nice way to get more off the build plate easier, but I would recommend against filling the built plate using every single millimetre that’s available. You’ll essentially be printing a solid sheet of resin on the first few layers, and the peel force will be something stupid which could damage the FEP and cause you a few problems. I always leave reasonable gaps here and there between stuff. Though I don’t tend to fill the build plate too much.

    But side note, i Printed $2k of DKoK, on my printer right after i bought it, spent $850 on the printer setup and resin for that army lol. Now Have printed huge BT army, Votann army, Nid army, UM army, BA army, Necron army, and 4 other Fantasy armies lol. Each Full Army costs me maybe $100. Best part is the ability to just pick up a new OPR compatable army and try it out. I found myself moved on from the 1:1 GW models now. lots of fun stuff out there.

    Watching as Pat's first SM is spinning around, i am inclined to agree that less is more, if only because as you say it stops looking like a Marine after a lot has been added. If people want that, all the power to them. But i think when adding to a model, keep it simple such as a single Shoulder pad swap, or an Arm and Helmet. But my preference is to keep the aesthetic of the model but with some characterful change, ot a change in character (that makes sense in my head anyways).
    But with the 1 big rule of the hobby, its important to remember. They are your models. If you like it, then go with it.

    As someone who owns 2 3d printers and regularly prints minis and buys GW minis they each have their own niche. No, 3d printers are not plug and play but they are not a full on second hobby as some say. Its a pretty low angle hill to climb and you can set yourself up in an afternoon with some RUclips tutorials. Honestly GW just has better sculptors currently. Their sculpts are still the best on the market. If someone has the time and money for the initial investment and you like to play with your mates or local shop and not sanctioned GW tourneys then resin printers are a fabulous investment and totally worth it even if you're still going to buy GW minis.
    Edit: spelling.

    The plastic GW uses for their sprues cost ~1.50USD per kilo. A steel mold costs about ~6000USD, and an injection machine is about 12,000‐20,000usd. A mold can get about 60,000 sprues.
    A box of intercessors weighs about 0.26 kilos for 4 sprues. It costs them about ~0.53usd per spure if they buy a 20,000usd and two 6000usd molds just for boxes of intercessors. This is just the cost of plastic manufacturing. This does not include the cost of marketing, designing the models and packaging, salary of the machine operator, nor the overhead markup.
    While a 3d printer will cost you about 250-500usd and has a cost of about 40usd per kilo of resin. It will, in the long run, end up costing you 2.61usd for the equivalent of a sprue to make.
    So plastic has a much higher start up cost but can be cheaper in the long run but 3d printing is way easier to get into but in the end costs more.
    Now that is said the price of buying a box of intercessors costs about 51usd on amazon, a price of 12.75usd per sprue. So buying from GW is more expensive than 3d printing yourself.
    Do what you will with this info. A business has their right to do what they want with their pricing.

    Given that Pat appears to be being bitten by the 3d ptint bug. How about in 9 months or so you hold a poll amongst your subscribers or patreons for a subject. Geoff gets to build a kit, Pat gets to print and Peachy has to kit bash to get to the end result. From the decision point you have 1 week to get it built. Geoff has to go to GW or say element or order online. Pat has to locate STLs and print. Peachy has to build from his bits box.

    Honestly, I think the biggest flaw was going with s Space. Marine as addressed towards the end. They are, by design, one of the most uniform looking lines in the GW range.
    I think we're this really takes off is where the breadth of the Galaxy gives more of that grey area to play in: Chaos Marines and all the deviations they can have, Guard Regiments that can be from any world, Chaos Demons and all the madness they can manifest, Orks and their endless hodge podge aeathetic.
    3D printing is sort of a hobby in and of itself but I believe it's true value does lie in the infinite potential you will always have once you are up and running.
    Though I don't think it will "kill" the likes of GW. You have to remember, it's been 50 years of work to get to the point where "Black Templar" is a such a meaningful concept that we can even attempt to recreate it from third party bits so there will always be a place for that shared world we all play in, maybe GW just might have to settle for a world in which they share how people express themselves within it.

    Marines were the worst example for this video, with 9 specific armour marks and official variants- there are huge constraints on what you can do in the marine space and have it read right. GW have turned us all into Rivet counters.
    Orks OTOH have a huge wealth of gear styles through the decades and no armour variant need be the same. Jackboots and peaked caps, madmax, greatcoats, overalls, padded armour, steel plates, mechanised armour suits.
    Guard also are in the sweet spot here, you can start producing copies very easily or original regiments based on untapped historical military styles, Rhodesians, Maoiris, Tigermen, Greeks, Celts.
    Spacenam are an example of GW being blown out of the water by an imitator

    People are generally drawn towards the path of least resistance, and buying a plastic kit is quicker and easier for most people. They are happy (or at least willing) to pay a premium, in order to save time and effort. 3D printing is amazing (I've been doing it for almost 3 years) and it can save huge amounts of money. But it is nowhere near the plug in a play situation that printer companies (and a lot of RUclipsrs) make it out to be. So many variables are at play, and can mean spending hours or even days figuring out what the problem is when it doesn't work. Until 3D printing really does become "idiot proof", GW has nothing to fear.

    People tend to under estimate the time you can put into 3d printing. The printing aspect is for the most part is fire and forget, but everything before and after that point can be a really where that hobby aspect comes in.
    You can spend tons of time setting up sliced files and like 5-10% of everything you print is likely to fail so unless want to print an exact duplicate over and over with no adjustments because you are confident in Your supports you need to remake a slice with different orientations due to fep wear and all the little things thay can cause print failures.
    When washing you people recommended 100% isopropyl alcohol but ive always found the unnecessary and expensive so i use simple green which is 75% and do a "dirty wash" to get the bulk of the garbage off and then do a clean wash with hot water and detergent and just scrubbing the models with a firm toothbrush and let them dry.
    The breakdown turns into like:
    3-4 hours printing
    40 minutes for cleaning
    20 minutes for dry
    20 for curing
    10-20 minutes for setting up an stl
    GW pricing has always been pretty rough regardless of era but the wallets too tight to support all their game systems
    These miniatures might cost you 20 for an stl set and like pocket change for resin
    I can play a whole khorne demons list for maybe 250 all said and done and thats the whole range

    found with some HH stuff, and more recently 40k stuff you can do reasonably well with digital assembly and printing in a very small number of parts. e.g. a HH Mk VI marine, with a boarding shield, printed as a single part. including the base, is possible - its also possible to key parts nicely too
    saves a huge amount of time on clean up and assembly

    For me, 3D printing went out the window the moment I realized I have to use resin. We as a community spend so much time hating on GW resin and pointing out all sorts of problems with it (bendy, brittle, whatnot) but turn a blind eye to 3D printer resin. Maybe I'm being harsh and the materials are different, but I simply refuse to work with something other than plastic. And some parts of the process are toxic? Pass, I'll check it out again when printing with plastic gets perfected.

    • @alexabadajos7461
      @alexabadajos7461 8 месяцев назад

      This is very silly, there are tons of different types of resin all of which are different sorts, the generic stuff is a little brittle but you can get stuff that is more pliable and less prone to shattering accidentally. Ive broken more finecast then i have of generic cheapass anycubic and i didnt have to pay 30 dollars to replace it.
