Something about the Illumination adaption of the Lorax that’s always intrigued me is that, if you take a look at the film’s soundtrack, there’s this amazing unused demo called “Biggering” that’s essentially a much darker and grittier version of “How Bad Can I Be?”. It’s not a villain song so much as an exploration of the Once-ler’s personal reflections, self-awareness, and eventual sense of denial. All of the themes of the song culminate into a gorgeously dramatic climax that’s followed by an extremely haunting emptiness at the very end. I can’t help but wonder if that song is a glimpse of what might have been if the film hadn’t been oversimplified and commercialized so much.
That's actually what "Biggering" is. Illumination's The Lorax was going to be darker and more faithful to the book. Then the execs went no, that's too scary for kids and won't sell and we got the version we got.

For me the biggest crime about the Sequel was it feels like the chars forgot about the actions of the previous movie. For crying out loud it feels like the Rats totally forgot about Mrs. Brisby saving their lives too.
One of the interesting things about the Secret of NIMH (1982) is all the fantastic and magical aspects of the film are entirely limited to the film itself. The original book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, was almost 100% strictly a hard science-fiction book (the lone fantasy element being the animals' ability to talk to each other, think like humans, and, of course, the rats' gaining of human-level intelligence, concept of morality, and lifestyle). A curious fact about the book is that it was directly inspired by John B. Calhoun's Experiment 25, the "Rat Utopia", which demonstrated the Behavioral Sink phenomenon of both social animal societies and human civilizations.
I didn't even know Ant Bully was a book, I thought it was just a piss poor attempt at a cool kids film, which resulted in the cancellation of Jimmy Neutron.
Honestly, that was one movie I saw as a kid, and my 8-year-old self adored it. It's still hard to look back on that movie and see how bad it is. Yeah the main character was a little shit and it didn't have the best animation, but it's just a movie I enjoy anyway.
The Lorax brings back bad memories for me. My school choir decided to sing Let It Grow at an assembly. They needed soloists for the characters. I was Granny Norma. I hated it.
It was such a breath of fresh air hearing someone actually appreciate Captain Underpants for its animation style and ability to use potty humor in a relatively not-annoying way. I've also seen Horton Hears a Who on a list of worst Blue Sky movies, so I was relieved it was on the best list here.
Before I revisited this movie as… A mature and sophisticated adult (m.ruclips.net/video/NoCkRm_ExIU/видео.html)… I used to think that this would be one of the best Dr. Seuss feature films (if not one of the best films period) before I revisited it in mid-2021 just after the death of Blue Sky. But looking back at it now… Meh (at least it has Seussical animation going for it??? But I feel like even the best aspect of this movie has cringe to it like that anime joke. Otherwise, this movie is just there for the kiddies to see a great book/short stretched out to 90 minutes)
The best one to me is The Last Unicorn. The first fairy tale I ever saw that didn't end in "And they lived happily ever after". Had no idea The Iron giant was based on a book.

When you talked about The Lorax, literally the first thing that popped into my mind was 'I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees, support Mr Beast, or I will break your knees.'
The How to Train your Dragon was 2nd place!? How dare you! What could possibly top How to Train your Dragon?!? The Iron Giant. Oh, ok. Yeah, that works.

21:55 he actually gave PRAISE to a movie based entirely around toilet humour? Wow. I guess some critics actually DO have a sense of humour. It's about bloody time.
Exactly. Personally, I don't like gross-out humor--urine, feces, burps, farts, vomit, etc.--but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's just not my cup of tea. I can still appreciate the movies that use it, even if I personally don't find it funny!
I don't necessarily mind toilet humor, I just want it to be used WELL. People seem to think a fart will make people laugh without having any context around it. Mindless toilet humor annoys me, but when written well, it actually can be funny. Used in excess it can get old though.
I must admit I did enjoy The Grinch but now that you mention Horton Hears a Who, it wasn't even close as good. Was a fun thing to watch with friends but I wouldn't watch it again and again. One thing I didn't like was the grinch's design, like you said he just looks like a dude that didn't drink coffee this morning. I think he looks too soft, but I assume it was an attempt from Illumation to make him more sympathetic?? Ok choice for marketing, not so good choice for an adaptation!
I mean look at the Grinch's teeth they are so pearly white and bugs just show up it doesn't mix well for me also. I think one of the favorites overall is the classic cartoon from Chuck Jones and I guess when I look back at it Jim Carrey actually did a great job, Sure it's uncanny (At most the Who's are scarier funnily enough.) But that's the thing with The Grinch he's supposed to look nasty/terrifying I mean that smile never ceases to creep me out its literally how the Grinch would look in reality and I love it actually though the Who's could need ADJUSTMENTS nevertheless Jim's expressive exaggerated movements did make him have more life to the character... And now he's playing freaking Dr. Robotnik, A.K.A The Eggman! xD Do you remember his puppet version that I think Jim Henson made?
The sad part about Lorax 2012 is, it *had* potential. There were *like one or two* things that it did exceptionally well. For example, I really liked how it didn't make the Once-ler evil and greedy right away; he was a reasonable, careful guy perfectly willing to cooperate starting out, just like we all think we'd be if we were in his place, only to steadily start succumbing to external pressure, like we all think we're too strong for, until he eventually slips into the irredeemable, like we all think couldn't possibly happen to us but, if we don't watch our backs, very much could. That's how *most* evil corporations start. Hardly anybody sets out *wanting* to crush everyone else under their heels from day one, and those that do don't get far enough to be able to do real damage like those who think they're justifiable. I mean, that could have been a _very powerful message_ that could have very much _enhanced_ the book's original message if they gave a single damn about the book's original message. But there's just way, way too much wrong dragging anything right down.
That would be too perfect for an adaptation. The Lorax shows that evil corporation destroys everything just for the sake of green piece of paper. And that message reflects Illumination Studios. Making predictable storylines for money while getting your audience tortured can be meaningful. If the studio gets a chance to make better stories and not the average ones, the Illumination Studios could be a great studio.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 Problem is that that's basically Illumination's MO, and has been for a while; make a movie with minimal funds, make it very inoffensive and safe, but eye-catching enough to fill theater seats, in order to maximize profit. They have all the chance in the world to make good films, they're just content making so-so ones.
@@Obsessor23 That kinda explains everything because Illuminations Studio was afraid to discuss any interesting topics about real struggles, making some dark atmosphere, and make some hidden adult jokes that kids won't understand. If the studio was like that, it will be more different studio than what we got now. You know? Kids movies are like utopia, it means nowhere, because they don't experience any sufferings and make something that are "safe" for the people. But the "safety" is just a part of survival instead of the living. No self awareness needed.
The Once-ler being a good character honestly explains why he has his own fandom. I still like this garbage movie, but almost entirely because of the potential and memes.
Also the tablecloth scene in the 2000 Grinch movie was actually BIG goof Jim had made. Carrey was supposed to bring the stuff in the table off but the stuff didn't fall off and remained on the table. So Jim impuslively shoved it all off
At least we all can agree that Danny DeVito did a perfect job not only giving his voice to the English version of the movie but also several others, the German, Italian, Russian and Spanish to be specific... That's kind of impressive and pretty rare, especially these days.
As an aspiring writer of novels, that movie really hurts me. It's ironic that it was based on the book but it was against any other books. At least it becomes a meme anyways.
My top five list excluding Disney: 1. Watership Down (possibly my favorite film ever) 2. Fantastic Mr. Fox 3. The Secret of NIMH 4. Akira 5. The Iron Giant
Technically, Akira is an anime adapted from a manga, which is a type of graphic novel. Technically a book, but graphic-based rather than traditional word-based.
I think one of the reasons the How To Train Your Dragon Films turned out so well, is because they have Douglas Sloan on the staff. You may not know this man by name, but you may know his work. He was able to churn out the third season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and Power Rangers Zeo in a span of a year and a half. And he was the man behind several good live-action Disney films.
The How to Train Your Dragon films may be loved by around 90% of the world’s population, but they are nothing compared to the books. So many of the plot points and characters in the books were dumbed down, messed up or eradicated completely. While I think the films are good as their own separate franchise, I read the books first and I just can’t stop thinking about how Dreamworks virtually ignored the source material for them. They are pretty much a separate franchise in their own right, and only bear a passing resemblance to the books.
JetFan92 The thing is that Several people do genuinely like the movie including me. However I get why he hates it. The odd animation style, the quirky characters, the weak plot, etc. Personally if people like or hate this franchise, I’d understand either way. We are all entitled to our opinions and we should respect them.

I'd take The 1972 Lorax over the 2012 version anyday! By the way, has anybody seen the other Dr. Suess Cartoons from the 70's like Dr. Suess on The Loose & The Hoober-Bloob Highway?
Yes, I love the first one, so true to the book. I mean, you don't always have to be completely true to the original source material ( just look at the MCU). However lorax 2012 took out most of the messeges and what the characters stood for. Costing it to be a lame overly "silly" this guy good that guy bad, good guy always wins kind of movies. I have more to say, but I'll stop here. And i apologize for not expressing myself clear; not very good at that.
I’m not surprised the Lorax was on the list for worst. That movie was a complete failure of an adaptation of the original Lorax story. Especially for the Oncler and the ending
Gappy Peters Yeah and what makes it worse is the lack of self awareness they had when they plastered the Lorax over so many products like cars and restaurants, as if they don’t have a movie that is basically anti corporation, but nope support the companies your own movie is against.

I think PhantomStrider just felt like he didn't wanna talk about ths anime sequence because he saw Robobuddies' video on the anime-parodizing sequence of Horton Hears a Who being quite similar to Doug Walker's commentary on it, so maybe he didn't wanna be too predictable about his thoughts on it, like Cartoon Palooza. Granted, I think both of them gave Horton Hears a Who a bit too much credit, but then again, even though it slightly has more flaws than they think, it's there opinion and I can have my own, which is that it's a good film but I also can understand why the film is not phenomenal from Jambareeqi's points.
*likes both of your comments* Yeah, I can see why PhantomStrider (welp, very fortunately, he's reading this comment as well as the fact that I respectfully and solely disagree with Cloudy 1 if anything has to do with this newborn list, except for a few points which gives him such a fair opinion for someone who thinks the movie is one of the all-time best) put The Grinch on this list, because it's just so average. But we are more than grateful for his reasons to bash The Lorax (2012) a lot!!!
Nicole Dorrian True, ar least with The Grinch, as painfully harmless as it is, has its heart in the right place and could sometimes gove me the feels. While with The Boss Baby, it's quite possibly DreamWorks Animation's worst work since the movie they made before in late '16 because not only does it have its moments of feeling like Illumination and Sony Animation levels of traumatizingly inoffensive, it could even be too mean-spirited with the dynamic between the two protagonist brothers (let alone Tim Templeton during the airport call scene where he belittled and verbally assaulted Theodore Templeton aka Boss Baby).
As an honourable mention, I'd like to suggest The Last Unicorn (based on the book by Peter S. Beagle, and produced by Rankin-Bass). It has lovely animation, a great score/songs by America, and a stellar voice cast, including Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges, and Christopher Lee. It also doesn't have a strictly happy ending (but no spoilers here)

Haha!
@Shaun Giles what does that mean?
lol
Same here
Honestly, that was one movie I saw as a kid, and my 8-year-old self adored it. It's still hard to look back on that movie and see how bad it is. Yeah the main character was a little shit and it didn't have the best animation, but it's just a movie I enjoy anyway.
The Lorax brings back bad memories for me.

Captain Underpants is awesome!

Robotnik, A.K.A The Eggman! xD

@@poweroffriendship2.0 Well, the part where you compared kids movies to a utopian world was something missing about.

Granted, I think both of them gave Horton Hears a Who a bit too much credit, but then again, even though it slightly has more flaws than they think, it's there opinion and I can have my own, which is that it's a good film but I also can understand why the film is not phenomenal from Jambareeqi's points.

Yeah, I can see why PhantomStrider (welp, very fortunately, he's reading this comment as well as the fact that I respectfully and solely disagree with Cloudy 1 if anything has to do with this newborn list, except for a few points which gives him such a fair opinion for someone who thinks the movie is one of the all-time best) put The Grinch on this list, because it's just so average. But we are more than grateful for his reasons to bash The Lorax (2012) a lot!!!
Well I think the grinch only deserved a dishonroble mention
It also doesn't have a strictly happy ending (but no spoilers here)
This also animated by Studio Ghibli
