I remember when Despicable Me 2 came out in theatres and I have to say that I enjoyed Lucy and Grus Relationship. The energetic and positivity of Lucy mixed the Heroic, Cranky, and Comedic Gru makes for a good couple in my opinion. I even loved the end fight scene.
I love Despicable Me 2. The evil minions were my favorite part of the movie because the idea of evil minions just seemed great to me. And El Macho was amazing. I found him funny and interesting.
Gru: "El Macho! He was riding a shark, with 250 pounds of dynamite strapped to his chest, into the mouth of an active volcano! His corpse was never found!" Um.... did you actually search in the volcano?
I remember watching Secret Life of Pets with my mom. During the sausage scene she started singing the song which is a song from her favorite movie Grease.
That scene was weird, did they put drugs in the sausages? That's another reason why I prefer the second one 'cause it didn't have scenes that made the characters seem like they're on drugs. Or sausages that sing songs from musicals.
I just hope that Illumination doesn't mess up the Super Mario movie, making the Toads some Minions copy-cat. At least it won't be a big flop, if Shigeru Miyamoto (the man behind the Super Mario franchise) supervises the movie. I want to give it some hope.
@@robertharris6092 what makes you feel that they will do it? I'm pretty sure that if Miyamoto controls them every moment they can't make something Minions-level wrong.
I predict the Goombas will be the Minion copy-cats, mostly because they're literally minions to Bowser, but also because their design is more uniform and simplistic (Toad has a simple design too, but the Goombas even more so). Or they'll do both, because they hate us all.
@@AllyGatorAnimator being more acquainted with the RPG spinoff series, there are some "partners" who are enemies acting as companions towards Mario. I'm speaking of Paper Mario (N64) and The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
The Paranormalist As a kid, Despicable Me felt better due to superior comedy but as a teen, Megamind feels better due to the subtle character details and twist on the hero and villain dynamic.
Half-bad (sure, I can see why it has a bad reputation as painfully average for the kiddies and that’s because it pretty much is, but then again, the only Illumination film that actually has zero effort put into it unless it’s to be a corporate, kiddie POS is The Lorax. Hell, even Minions had a stop-motion scene, as brief as it was!).
Well it’s nice too see a best list of illumination movies it’s usually well hated or so (for understandable reasons) as well as annoying the minions are I wish they have some movies that can be good as the First Despicable Me. Anyways nice video as always, Josh. ^-^
Apparently, Illumation is making a movie based on Super Mario Bros. in 2022. EDIT: Trailer looks amazing. This might be the first really good Illumination movie since Despicable Me 2.
For Universal’s animation studios: GKIDS > DreamWorks Animation > Illumination GKIDS is an arthouse distributor that mostly focuses on licensing foreign/indie/arthouse animated films and Universal distributes their films. They even licensed one live action movie that won tons of awards: Bong Joon Ho's Parasite. They also release TV series now, since they have A Town Called Panic, Future Boy Conan, Ronja: The Robber's Daughter, and Neon Genesis Evangelion (co-distributed with Netflix; Amazon Studios, however, has the Rebuild films).
Disregarding the spin-off. we don’t mind at all if people say bad things about the DM movies because I’ve seen way better, but yeah, I’m glad PhantomStrider found his own reasons to praise the Despicable Me trilogy.
Izzy the Trashposter yeah I agree with that too, the minions were a cash grab. It’s just that nobody ever talks about the real main characters, like Gru, Lucy, or the three girls.

@@phantomstrider I've heard from the community that just because they are not genocidal doesn't mean they are redeemed. I do like the story of “Sing”. Of how a couple of overstressed and good people gone through bad situations turn into true winners, and I think it’s a bit cliched when some of them say they don’t want the prize money in the end. Maybe in the sequel, there will be new faces, new voices, and new stories for each and every one of them.
Honestly, Sing is one of the least bad Illumination films Atleast it has a good message of follow your dreams. It's definitely flawed and average, but not bad like other Illumination movies. I say the same with Sing 2.
@@EmmyV2002 I know! But singing and loveble characters (Not all of them but still), of course I'm gonna love this movie 😁. But one thing the movie should have done to be better is making their side story and the characters interact more with each other.
I’d like to say, you inspire me so much and I even did a ranking of Pixar, Dream works, Blue Sky, and Illumination movies in your honor. And thank you for being my favorite RUclipsr
i think i can define all 3 main minions of the minions movie! Kevin - Kevin is the leader of the three, with lots of determination in his goal. Stuart - Stuart is a minion that enjoys his music, but his hunger for bananas stands out to me. Bob - Bob is the cheery, optimistic of the bunch, however, he does get a little reprehensive when he goes with Kevin and Stuart.
From my experience, while not the best movie, I was pleasantly surprised by it. Mainly because Max was one of the most unlikable protagonists I've ever seen and I didn't even feel he redeemed himself at the end of the first, so I was glad they made him more likable in the 2nd. That and the way the movie's plot worked was how I thought the 1st would be, with multiple stories. Not the best, but a clear improvement compared to the 1st, at least in my opinion.
Good list, my opinion though; I would switch Secret life of pets with Sing. Pets made me just bored to watch, Sing to me was interesting, while because I am a music freak.
10:52 Yeah for genocidal characters it's going to take a lot more time, and just more than talking to get them to change their minds. And it's incredibly hard. It could be possible but Steven universe showed it in a bad way or it was kinda pure luck that white diamond is sensitive about labeling.
There were a couple of moments I enjoyed from Secret Life of Pets 2. One was the catnip scene with Chloe where she became a stereotypical stoner. The second was the scene from the vet's office (again involving cats) with the two The Shining-esque kittens who liked to start fires. Their creepy smiles make me laugh. Also, was anyone expecting The Minions to be groundbreaking or have a deep story when it was announced?
PhantomStrider: Minions have somehow creeped into every demographic Also PhantomStrider: I’m probably not the right demographic for minions. Me: Sounds about right.
TBH, I couldn't remember that many of these movies to give a top 6 for either side. But Despicable Me 1 is still gonna be my favorite as I legitimately like that movie, and the Minions were cute when this was all they were in, and Minions is the worst.
Honestly, I never understood what anyone said in Despicable Me when I was younger, so when I watched it last month, I finally got some of the jokes or punchlines

@@aionicthunder it will be the Spider-Man into the spider verse of Illumination it might not take itself serious but i think it will be better than the first minions movie
I think Illumination's films are slowly getting better I watched both Sing 2 and Minions: The Rise of Gru and thought that they were really well done. This gives me hope that the Mario movie becomes a success
For me the original Despicable Me is my favourite movie, since I really enjoy the chemistry with Gru and the children of Margo, Edith and Agnes (which the So Fluffy meme is one of my mum's favourite moments). Otherwise I enjoy Vector as a villain with his quirkiness and villainy that is put against Gru (sorry I'm not to big of a fan of El'Macho, since I didn't enjoy his character especially as a mystery on if he is evil or not). I hope if they ever do a 4th Despicable Me... they concentrate on the bonds of the Children, since I do feel they have become Side Characters (especially in the third film) which is a bit sad to me.
So, I'm pretty sure, almost everyone has heard about the news that Illumination and Nintendo are going to make a new Mario movie. (2022) What do you all think about that? Including you Strider. :D
I can't speak for everyone here, but personally I'm looking forward to it. I liked most of Illumination's work and I'm a huge Mario fan so the movie already got me interested, although there's no info aside from a possible release year.
Kassandra X2 I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think I heard somewhere that they're working with Shigeru Miyamoto on this film. I just hope that they get Charles Martinet to voice Mario!
Considering Miyamoto himself is gonna be an (I think) executive producer, I have high hopes. This could very well be Illumination’s Spider-verse! I too hope they bring in Charles Martinet to voice Mario (and Luigi if he’s also in the movie).
The movie is terrible in my opinions. Poor character design, not creative at all. (Compare it to Zootopia, they nailed the fact that these are animals and went full creativity). The message of Sing is unclear and meh. My opinion.
Sing is my favourite illumination film but I can definitely see why some people don't like it. I personally think it and it's sequel have some of the best illumination moments and sing 2 has a top tier main antagonist in Mr crystal
"Minions are like a contagious disease, and we are all still searching for the cure!" Quoting JoshScorcher: "Strider foreshadowed the CoronaVirus, but we didn't listen."
Heck, even the so called original Disney films weren't actually all that original. Take the Lion King for example. The Lion King from 1994... it's turns out this was a rip off of an older Japanese animation called "Kimba the White Lion". My point is, I think we can agree that Disney have never been truly original.
I actually like The Secret Of Pets 2 more than first one and i admit Despicable Me 2 is best Illumination. Fun Fact: They are first second installments from the studio and they are my most favorite movies from the studio
Sing I thought it was a ok movie. Not one of the best non Disney movies, but still ok. That's all i can say.😅 And just like you said, it may not be zootopia but the characters are interesting. The secret life of pets I think this movie was pretty adorable and silly. And yea, it's just like toy story but with animals, so i did expected how the movie was gonna end with the two rival dogs becoming friends. I mostly laughed with snowball the bunny, and kevin hart was just hilarious voicing him ^^ Secret life of pets 2 Uuhhh... i thought it ok. Just ok. I prefer the first movie. Despicable me Honestly the best out of the trilogy and the best movie of illumination. And the minions were actually less annoying and more funny than in the other movies. Hop Saw it once... not a fan. Like i wanted to like it but it wasn't that interesting. Despicable me 3 It was ok, i didn't mind gru's brother, i found him pretty funny since he is like the opposite of gru X3 The grinch It's honestly sad how illumination didn't had guts to make the grinch creepy like the one from the chuck jones animated short and the jim carrey live action version. It was still a ok movie though, but i mostly prefer the chuck jones and the jim carrey versions. The lorax I used to love this movie but later on i stopped being a fan. So yea, i just don't find it interesting. The animated short version did way better job, especially with it's message and ending. Minions Me being a person who has mixed feelings for the minions, i do like the minions but i also agree with people who cannot stand them. Like it wasn't that important to give the minions their own movie... and that's the problem with illumination. They pay way too much attention to the minions instead of the characters who truly matter: gru, the girls and lucy. It's also just sad how there's way too much merch of the minions instead of gru and his family. Despicable me 2 Oh my gosh yes!!! We all know that the first movie is the best, but to me the sequel will be my top favorite. It was so nice in seeing what a sweet caring dad gru has become. And his relationship with lucy was just freaking cute! El macho was a pretty fun villain but he also had a threatening side too during the third act. So yea, it's a pretty fun movie 😙
Apparently in Sing 2, Johnny the gorilla DOESN'T LOVE piano anymore; he will break dance or some crap like that. This likable character changes his hobby|passion for NO GOOD REASONS! He met a cat who can dance, is amazed then imediately asked her to help. That's it! It's rushed, makes no sense and is not developped. Thank's for ruining this charming character Illumination U-U Rosita have a fear of highs... which come out of nowhere and Mina the elephant is barely there. Also, Gunter the annoying pig is still there. Hooray! Hop, to me, is like the live Smurfs and Alvin movies; lame, really stupid and annoying. Nothing is fun and none of the characters are likable. I hate thoses movies XS Smurfs's lost village is nice though; not perfect but enjoyable.
I noticed that Rise of Gru doesn’t seem to show too much with the Minions, in the trailer at least. Maybe Illumination caught on to the fact that people prefer gru to the minions. As far as I can see, Minions Rise of Gru, would be better of just being called Rise of Gru.
Despicable Me, as a very financially/commercially successful franchise (whether people love or hate it), is definitely not over yet since not only are getting a Minions sequel, we are also getting a Despicable Me 4, and with that said, it’s a common (albeit negative) prediction that it’ll still go strong in the 2030s.
the Netflix series of Green Eggs and Ham hit that balance of having a moral about trying something new while also not demonizing being on the safe side. In many ways I consider it an improvement on the original story, and Secret Life of Pets 2 could have been a lot better if it learned to be balanced with it's moral in the same way.
To be honest, I think Sing is one of the better Illumination movies. I mean, sure it’s definitely not perfect, but by Illumination standers, I thought it was pretty good, but that’s just my opinion : )
Your analysis of sing was pretty good. The only issue I had with it is your viewing of the rat. He’s supposed to be an a-hole. They didn’t try to make him likeable.

Illumination after realising minions are marketable: "Time to bring me my money"
You might wanna review the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Josh. Because as both an Illumination movie AND a video game adaptation, it'sa *wonderful!*
I remember watching Secret Life of Pets with my mom. During the sausage scene she started singing the song which is a song from her favorite movie Grease.
Nah she just really loves Grease.
That scene was weird, did they put drugs in the sausages?
That's another reason why I prefer the second one 'cause it didn't have scenes that made the characters seem like they're on drugs.
Or sausages that sing songs from musicals.
Sláine Dale
I guess you can say it was a Sausage Party
The Screenslaver Yeah, but at least in the scene, there wasn’t anything inappropriate, it just looked incredibly weird.
Sláine Dale
True.
I just hope that Illumination doesn't mess up the Super Mario movie, making the Toads some Minions copy-cat.
At least it won't be a big flop, if Shigeru Miyamoto (the man behind the Super Mario franchise) supervises the movie. I want to give it some hope.
Lol. They will.
@@robertharris6092 what makes you feel that they will do it?
I'm pretty sure that if Miyamoto controls them every moment they can't make something Minions-level wrong.
The
W H A T
I predict the Goombas will be the Minion copy-cats, mostly because they're literally minions to Bowser, but also because their design is more uniform and simplistic (Toad has a simple design too, but the Goombas even more so).
Or they'll do both, because they hate us all.
@@AllyGatorAnimator being more acquainted with the RPG spinoff series, there are some "partners" who are enemies acting as companions towards Mario. I'm speaking of Paper Mario (N64) and The Thousand Year Door (GameCube)
I honestly thought Megamind was the better Villain Protagonist movie than Despicable Me.
Yeah they're both good just Megamind was the better of the two
Megamind is definitely the most underrated films ever
Definitely
The Paranormalist As a kid, Despicable Me felt better due to superior comedy but as a teen, Megamind feels better due to the subtle character details and twist on the hero and villain dynamic.
Megamind feels like an adult film dressed up as an animation for kids.
"How Bad could this possibly be?" -Illumination
Half-bad (sure, I can see why it has a bad reputation as painfully average for the kiddies and that’s because it pretty much is, but then again, the only Illumination film that actually has zero effort put into it unless it’s to be a corporate, kiddie POS is The Lorax. Hell, even Minions had a stop-motion scene, as brief as it was!).
To save you some time, the whole list is essentially Despicable Me.
Well it’s nice too see a best list of illumination movies it’s usually well hated or so (for understandable reasons) as well as annoying the minions are I wish they have some movies that can be good as the First Despicable Me. Anyways nice video as always, Josh. ^-^

My least favorite animation studio. But their films are harmless even if they’re made just for money.
I’ve seen worse. - Scarlett Johansson (not as Ash the Porcupine, but as Black Widow in The Avengers)
But yes, I’ve especially seen better! - myself
I still enjoy watching some illumination movies
Apparently, Illumation is making a movie based on Super Mario Bros. in 2022.
EDIT: Trailer looks amazing. This might be the first really good Illumination movie since Despicable Me 2.
For Universal’s animation studios:
GKIDS > DreamWorks Animation > Illumination
GKIDS is an arthouse distributor that mostly focuses on licensing foreign/indie/arthouse animated films and Universal distributes their films.
Finally somebody that doesn’t complain about the Despicable Me movies!
the first one was good, but illumination definitely milked the shit out of the minions

I liked the first two, the third was meh, but I gotta agree with Izzy. The minions were milked so much, it was kinda annoying
Izzy the Trashposter yeah I agree with that too, the minions were a cash grab. It’s just that nobody ever talks about the real main characters, like Gru, Lucy, or the three girls.

Did- did Strider actually make fun of one of his favorite shows cuz it had such a dumb idea? I feel like I am in a better world!

I do like the story of “Sing”. Maybe in the sequel, there will be new faces, new voices, and new stories for each and every one of them.

i think i can define all 3 main minions of the minions movie!
I knew secret life of pets 2 would be on the bad list, and I actually haven’t seen it
fr, fr. it just seemed so annoying that i didn't even bother watching it.
True
From my experience, while not the best movie, I was pleasantly surprised by it.
Mainly because Max was one of the most unlikable protagonists I've ever seen and I didn't even feel he redeemed himself at the end of the first, so I was glad they made him more likable in the 2nd. That and the way the movie's plot worked was how I thought the 1st would be, with multiple stories.
Not the best, but a clear improvement compared to the 1st, at least in my opinion.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE NUMBER ONE BEST PICK! DM2 IS THE BEST

Secret life of pets 2

Despicable me
Honestly the best out of the trilogy and the best movie of illumination. And the minions were actually less annoying and more funny than in the other movies.
Hop
Saw it once... not a fan. Like i wanted to like it but it wasn't that interesting.
Despicable me 3
It was ok, i didn't mind gru's brother, i found him pretty funny since he is like the opposite of gru X3
The grinch
It's honestly sad how illumination didn't had guts to make the grinch creepy like the one from the chuck jones animated short and the jim carrey live action version. It was still a ok movie though, but i mostly prefer the chuck jones and the jim carrey versions.
The lorax
I used to love this movie but later on i stopped being a fan. So yea, i just don't find it interesting. The animated short version did way better job, especially with it's message and ending.
Minions
Me being a person who has mixed feelings for the minions, i do like the minions but i also agree with people who cannot stand them. Like it wasn't that important to give the minions their own movie... and that's the problem with illumination. They pay way too much attention to the minions instead of the characters who truly matter: gru, the girls and lucy. It's also just sad how there's way too much merch of the minions instead of gru and his family.
Despicable me 2
Oh my gosh yes!!!

I know that I’m late but let’s be honest, nobody asked for a second TSLOP movie
what do you think about sing 2
As far as I can see, Minions Rise of Gru, would be better of just being called Rise of Gru.

the Netflix series of Green Eggs and Ham hit that balance of having a moral about trying something new while also not demonizing being on the safe side. In many ways I consider it an improvement on the original story, and Secret Life of Pets 2 could have been a lot better if it learned to be balanced with it's moral in the same way.
