The real reason people hated the episode Karate Island was because in November 2006, Nickelodeon aired a 24 hour marathon of the top 100 best spongebob episodes. However this marathon ended up being controversial as most of the best episodes on the list were mostly from season 4 while fan favourite episodes were either low on the list or not there at all. The number 1 winner on the top 100 24 hour marathon was revealed to be Karate Island. This is what caused people to hate this episode. I think Karate Island is a good episode but its definitely not the best ever episode of spongebob. That would be would Band Geeks!

I grew up watching SpongeBob seasons 1-8, when Nickelodeon would mix all of them around on their rerun schedules. And yeah, I think that was one of the newer episodes I enjoyed out of that set. I thought it was sweet that SpongeBob cared for Squidward's well being, especially after watching so many episodes from that era where he couldn't be any more oblivious to his emotions. I don't remember even minding the solution being so vengeful, because SpongeBob understood it without getting offended at said logic for threatening him or anything.

It's important to consider that as sea creatures like Spongebob, Patrick, and co. have never learned about the classic life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly; therefore, this change is what causes terror. I think the original suicide attempt jokes in Are You Happy Now could be an attempt to educate kids on suicidal ideation. But it came off as callous jokes because Spongebob Squarepants simply isn't the right show to speak on that topic. It's too cheery and it's target demographic is too young. But it made me think. I think what I hate about the episode “Karate Island” is the lack of understanding of SpongeBob and Sandy’s relationship, both with SpongeBob’s annoying personality and the implication they’re not equal karate-wise, which is the initial premise. The threats are also just kind of boring and I really don’t like tropes that are just “character falls into obvious trap.”

Spongehenge is genuinely one of my favorite episodes... I didn't find it to be mean-spirited at all (unfortunate for most characters involved yes, but not mean-spirited) and I feel like there was a lot of bizarre and cryptic stuff happening in this episode that was meaningful enough to actually have made me think a little about it, which is something that Spongebob rarely accomplishes tbh. I also thought it was intruguing how the storm just seems like an omen of a major catastrophe, like the moon from Majora's Mask getting closer, yet Spongebob turns it into a pleasant melody even if it doesn't prevent anything. Just really creative and unique overall and different from the usual tone of the series.
And to add to your statistics, as someone on the spectrum I also find myself often afraid of the dark, sometimes waking up and feeling the urge to turn on the lights, so I guess I might give Night Light a watch.

  • @ryukthedarkrai4259

Strangely, I find myself loving Jellyfishing.
Spongebob and Patrick aren't completely ignorant in this episode. They show a sense of awareness to each other's actions (e.g. Spongebob taking away the soup Patrick was blowing in Squidward's face and Patrick taking away the clarinet before Spongebob could blow into it with his saliva covered lips), not to mention how their excitement slowly dies down when they see Squidward get zapped by the big Jellyfish. I like how Squidward is in this 'has no mouth and must scream' state, it's funny watching him try and roll away from the big Jellyfish while remaining dead silent.

I think Jellyfishing is a classic episode. Spongebob done right.
And in a way where later episodes torturing Squidward just because he exists, Squidward is in a way rather meanspirited. While he does get tortured a bit, it's usually a response after he does something wrong, or 'instant karma' for his behavior..
Except for that part when Patrick gets angry and impales his hand for not being able to grip his jellyfishing net.

I find Night Light to be pretty relatable to me as well. Sometimes I'll be hearing random noises around the house that I mistake for footsteps or things moving around, so it can be quite bothersome for me. I also happen to be on the spectrum, and while the dark can still make me feel unnerved sometimes (chalk it up to fear of the unknown), I find it can be pretty relaxing. Sometimes the sun and the lights are just too much, and I prefer how some environments look in darker settings, whether it be outside or inside.

Despite how bad mid-season can be, I do appreciate that they try to put a good moral in some episodes. Even the worst episodes tried to teach the kids something. For example, the almost unanimous worst episode One Course Meal still had the lesson that there is such a thing as taking things too far. It’s not pleasant to watch, but it’s still blatantly obvious that Mr Krabs is going way too far with his revenge on Plankton here and we see just how much Plankton suffers as a result. And with how ruthless some people can get this day and age, the consequences of taking things too far in a conflict is certainly something that needs to be talked about more.

When the show declined in quality, Stephen put it back on the rails and leaded the way.
Ironically, the executives told him that Spongebob wouldn't work because "it's an adult character", they have probably never watched mr.Bean who is also an adult, but like Spongebob, he is also an adult who can have creative ideas and end up by saving the day (or ruining it).
I still admire Stephen, he cared a lot about his creations and poured his soul onto it, he had a knowledge about marine creatures as he worked as a marine biologist who made doodles in his spare-time.
He initially didn't hated, but saw no interests at de-aging Spongebob and making him a child version of the character.
It worked for a Pup named Scooby Doo, but not for others.
He knew what worked and what couldn't and had a great dedication to the audience and respect, he had those back rightfully.
Sadly, without him, i don't know if anyone supervised the show..
He was the only creator that i knew to cares that much about the state of his show.

I think the reason why a lot of people hate Are You Happy Now is because that is one of many episodes in the show that loves to put Squidward through undeserved pain. A lot of adults understand and relate to Squidward, and get ticked off whenever they see him get his "comeuppance" for something he didn't even do or deserve. Hence why episodes like Ink Lemonade, Good Neighbors, Squid Baby, Are You Happy Now, Cephalopod Lodge, and more, are so hated.
Oh yeah, all of the implied self-harm jokes are another reason why, too. It feels like the show is making fun of depressed people with that episode more than anything. Are You Happy Now is very distasteful, in my opinion. At least some of the unnecessary scenes in it were removed, though. That's nice.
*But wait, people hate Wormy? That episode is a classic! How could people hate that episode?!*
    Edit: fixed some spelling mistakes

    • @YourFeelingsSucks
      @YourFeelingsSucks 8 месяцев назад +1

I get what people said, but as i suffered from depression and did self-harm before, that episode is more accurate than making fun of an issue.
Spongebob handled the topic surprisingly well, but i don't remember if the others cartoons did as well.
But nonetheless, i appreciated the awarness of that episode.

Hi Josh! While I've never seen the "Night Light" Spongebob episode, your list has actually inspired me to watch [and in some cases re-watch] these episodes. I also love the Squeaky Boots episode, that one was actually my introduction to Edgar Allen Poe's Tell Tale Heart! Josh, I have a question: Have you ever seen the documentary Claydream? It's the story of Will Vinton, and how his studio became Laika, it's a good, but very bittersweet documentary.

Josh has certain personality quirks that feel so welcoming and caring twords his viewers and they always cheer me up.
Not only that but his insights and reasoning behind his lists are so logical, and make me rethink and question things on the episodes I never did before. He does incorporate his own opinions but instead of pushing them onto the viewers with the sole argument of
"Its stupid, I don't like it"
He gives genuine ideas on how it could be better, logical reasoning as to why it didn't work, and vise versa for things he did enjoy.
Because of his way of speaking it almost feels like he's having a well thought out and respectable debate.
This channel will forever be so comforting and enjoyable to watch ❤️

Here are my thoughts on these hated episodes:
    (0:38)
    #10 Ghost Host
It definitely is an interesting episode, but I personally never really cared much for this episode. It is not because I think it’s bad. It was just one of the episodes I mostly saw once as a kid, but haven’t really seen since then. However, I will admit I do like SpongeBob and the Flying Dutchman in this episode and its character-driven story. Overall, a decent episode.
    (2:47)
    #9 Night Light
Honestly, I was surprised to see that this episode is hated at all. Personally, I find it really relatable because I have definitely been SpongeBob when I was a kid. Also, I actually really enjoyed Patrick in this episode, and he and SpongeBob worked together to light up their house as best as they could. Lastly, I really did love the Moth in this episode, not only was it cool seeing Mark Hamill, but I feel like this villain had some potential since he was an arch-nemesis who Mermaid Man had been searching for 57 years. In fact, I actually came up with a theory that explains why Mermaid Man was so devastated when the Moth got away at the end.
    (4:51)
    #8 House Fancy
I would describe this episode as a better version of Squilliam Returns. While I do love Season 3 of SpongeBob, I never really liked Squilliam Returns because of the ending where Squidward is just miserable at the end. House Fancy, I think, is the overall better episode. Mainly, I like it because it has a lot of good jokes in it. My personal favorite is when Squidward tries to tidy up his house, and every time he fixes one problem, he causes another one. In addition, I love how Squidward won in the end. It was nice to finally see Squidward score a victory for once. My only real complaint is the SCUMBOB!-Infamous Toenail scene. I just hated that scene so much that I always look away or fast forward just to avoid it. But other than that scene, I really liked this episode and found it enjoyable.
    (7:03)
    #7 Wormy
Personally, I agree with what you said at 7:05, Strider. For me, though, I can tolerate the close-ups because of how funny it is. I do realize that there are some people who are afraid of insects, but I find it funny because of how everyone overreacts. My personal favorite overreaction is Squidward and Mr. Krabs, where they find the butterfly not all that bad, until they see the close-up and just scream and run away. It's just so funny. Overall, I would say your opinion of this episode comes down to if you are afraid of insects or can tolerate the creepy close-ups.
    (9:07)
    #6 Spongehenge
Truth be told, I was really surprised to see that this episode was classified ultra-infamous because I found it really fun. I will admit this is one of the weirdest SpongeBob episodes, but I do find it enjoyable. Firstly, I enjoy the cheerful music that plays in SpongeBob’s whistley holes, which is really fun to listen to. Second, I love all of the statues SpongeBob created near the end. It’s always fun to see what other kinds of skills SpongeBob has up his sleeve. The only thing I’m not really sure about this episode is the ending. While I wasn’t uncomfortable with the ending, I was pretty confused because I was like, “What the jeepers happened to Bikini Bottom!?! And how long was SpongeBob gone!?!” Despite that, I find the episode really fascinating and enjoyable to watch.
    (11:44)
    #5 The Krabby Kronicle
To sum up my thoughts on this episode, I basically agree with everything you said, Strider. I think the episode has an important message, especially in today’s society. While Mr. Krabs was unlikable here, I agree that it was the whole point of the episode. Besides, Mr. Krabs does get his comeuppance when all the customers take their money back.
    (14:50)
    #4 Karate Island
This has always been one of my favorite SpongeBob episodes. Mainly because it had a lot of action in it. I also really do enjoy seeing Sandy kick some sea butt in this episode. I mean, if SpongeBob were to be the king of karate, Sandy would definitely be the queen of karate. The only thing, I guess that makes people not like this episode would be SpongeBob getting kind of cocky in this episode, but honestly, considering he has been in the past, it makes sense for him to be like that in this episode. Overall, a fun action-packed episode.
    (17:37)
    #3 Squeaky Boots
Honestly, I think this is a prime example of how your taste will vary. As for my opinion on it, I actually love this episode. Firstly, I will say, I do understand why some people may not like it, especially if they have sensitive hearing. But the reason I love this episode is because SpongeBob loves his new Squeaky Boots so much that he wants to wear them forever. Secondly, I think this might be one of Mr. Krabs’ best appearances in the whole show. He just feels like a cheapskate and not condescending like some later episodes. My personal favorite parts of this episode are when Mr. Krabs screams and runs to his office, and he finally loses it and just eats the boots. The first is made even funnier by a meme, someone on youtube made where Mr. Krabs burps instead of screaming when he hears the squeaky boots. Overall, I find this episode really funny, but again, I do understand why someone may not like it.
    (19:21)
    #2 Sportz
This is the only episode on this list I haven’t seen. However, I’m actually interested in checking it out because it sounds so ridiculous and funny at the exact same time.
    (22:06)
    #1 Are You Happy Now?
So this is the SpongeBob episode where I have the most complicated history. When I was younger, I actually hated this episode. Mainly because I just really didn’t like the implied “jokes” in Squidward’s house. Also, I really hated how SpongeBob kidnapped Squidward and took him to the Krusty Krab. I just felt like that ending went too far. However, after taking "introduction into psychology" at college, I actually now really like this episode. Firstly, I want to give the creators credit for deleting the “jokes”, once they realize they messed up. It definitely makes the episode better. But what really changed my opinion of this episode is the fact that I now understand what Squidward was going through in this episode, thanks to my knowledge of psychology. I still think the ending is a little clucky, but considering Squidward pretty much lost all emotion in his day-to-day life, I think SpongeBob did the right thing in the end. Yeah, he might have messed up making Squidward mad, but at least he was feeling emotion again. So, I would say this episode is definitely an over-hated episode that talks about one of the most important issues.

I just finished this video, and I genuinely need to say how much effort you put into all of your stuff and how much it means to me. I think that one of the best things to say is that you're not just a generic critic who slams every episode they see past the first 3 seasons. I feel like at this point you make an effort to make positive content, and it really shows. I especially love how you criticize people who just insult the show for not being the classic era, because that's kind of why the show relies so heavily on past episode references like it does now; if people were more direct with their criticisms the show would probably be a lot better.
I also really like your criticisms here. I used to really hate episodes like Are You Happy Now & Sportz, but I feel like your reviews gave me a completely new stance on them. Especially for Are You Happy Now, the review reminded me of how respectful the episode is to people struggling with depression and also reminded me of how genuine-feeling and respectful SpongeBob is as a character here. And I don't mind him at all in really anything from the first 12 seasons, hell I even like him in episodes like Boating Buddies & Squid's Visit just because he's funny.
I feel like if there's one criticism I have, it's that you're using ScumBob Wiki. I'm really knowledgeable about this series' fanbase, and I can say with experience that the ScumBob Wiki seems like a nice place to find a grand treasure trove of all the episodes that are hated, but it's mostly little kids adding all of the episodes they like and making shitty puns. I do like how you made fun of ScumBob Wiki though, but I feel like if you were going to cover a subject like hated episodes again you probably shouldn't use it. Squeaky Boots, Wormy, Ghost Host, and Karate Island are very much beloved episodes in the fanbase. Note that the first three of those are hated a lot for having "scary animation"... kids in action.
I really like that, here, you're totally willing to cover episodes that ARE widely hated though (I do wish all of them were like that). SpongeHenge and Are You Happy Now in particular are totally hated, I never see anyone outside of my general SB-watching friend group liking them. But overall this is an excellent review and I kind of miss when you covered cartoons more often since I know that a cartoon video in the style of this one would be a really good watch. But yeah, I hadn't seen your content in a while and this video reminded me of why I used to love it so much. Great video!

I honestly rate squeaky boots in my top episodes ever. As you’ve said, the boots were supposed to be annoying. Being on the spectrum, I can attest that there are sounds like that that drive me up the wall, and the episode does a wonderful job in showing just how much it can disrupt your life when it just won’t go away. I came to respect the episode even more when I learned that the climax was a toned down parody of Edgar Alan Pie’s short story the Tell Tale Heart, which similarly portrays a man’s guilt driving him over the edge via a noise that just won’t go away.

When reviewing things, people need to draw a distinction between quality and enjoyment. You can enjoy a bad episode or movie, and you can dislike an objectively good thing.
On Ghost Host, i think because australian tv shows stuff like that for kids frequently, its less "offensively scary"

Yeah, I’m right there with you. SpongeBob acting intentionally stupid cracked me up HARD when I was younger. Hell, the box-chested still image NEVER fails to get a laugh out of me. That said, I do recognize that it has its problems. I can fully understand why people come out of this episode REALLY not liking Patrick. I always chalked up his behavior to him having a SERIOUS lapse in short-term memory, as morons like him can be prone to, but that explanation really doesn’t hold up on reflection. Also, I’ll be honest here, the offensive stuff flew completely over my head for an embarrassingly long time. No joke, it took Strider pointing it out in his Best and Worst Patrick Episodes video for it to finally hit me, and HOLY SHIT, that did not age well!
