One of my least favorite tv tropes is someone getting blamed for somebody else's actions and the completely innocent individual is punished for no reason.

    • @F0re5tMan
      @F0re5tMan Год назад +167

Same! Or better yet when the individual is trying to do good but is accused of starting trouble (like the Tom & Jerry episode Tot Watchers where Tom and Jerry keep a baby from getting into trouble due to the babysitter being a very neglectful teen [seriously, she spends most of the episode talking to her friend on the phone instead of doing her job], and she actually smacks Tom for "bothering" the baby). This trope is just NOT funny!

I think it's because when Squidward ends up participating in something, he tends to go a bit overboard and falls into "Dude, not cool" territory. Like in the April Fool's episode. Hard disagree. Squidward is a great character but you've got him wrong. He is definitely NOT secretly fond of Spongebob and Patrick, he's just a good character because although he is really grouchy, he has a genuine passion for music and he still has the capacity for empathy like a normal person which is how he feels bad for Spongebob in the Dying for Pie and Pizza Delivery episodes, which motivates him to do the right thing. Squidward is the perfect antithesis to Spongebob and their dynamic is one of the best parts of the show.

"Valentine's Day" is actually one of my favorite episodes from SpongeBob. Its pacing is pretty slow, but I actually love Patrick's rampage at the end. The scene leading up to it where Patrick finally accepts the handshake and apologizes to SpongeBob only to be constantly interrupted by random fish talking about the amazing presents SpongBob got them is hilarious.

Now, when it comes to Patrick’s character in Valentine’s Day, I remember checking out Mr Enter’s SpongeBob season 4 video yesterday, and one thing I noticed is that the SpongeBob audience that were hyped up about the Best Day Ever marathon actually felt like how Patrick felt in Valentine’s Day, a little let down and not what was to be expected. I can possibly see Patrick just getting disappointed that SpongeBob overhyped the handshake (since the actual gift he made for him was late) , basically, the kind of reaction the audience got with the Best Day Ever marathon, and ESPECIALLY with the Truth or Square premiere. But in the end, I can see where you’re coming from with this, Strider.

  • @Taw973
    @Taw973 Год назад +75

I feel like a good reason why both Club SpongeBob and Jellyfishing are liked is because in the former, Squidward kept disobeying SpongeBob and Patrick to not go into the club (due to how small the box is). Given Squidward's belief of reverse psychology. He disobeyed and that's what got him stuck there. Plus, he tried to escape and it clipped off all the way to the Kelp Forest. Also, it wasn't about them mindlessly listening to a conch, because given that SpongeBob is a show on an episodic basis, they didn't have to do anything because it's all reset by then. Plus, Squidward did try to act like he's better than both of them (especially with him shaking his rear at SpongeBob).
and In Jellyfishing's case, Squidward instead of just simply declining it, he decides to be arrogant about it and laugh at their expense, that and he slapped a Jellyfish in this episode by calling it stupid, and given that they're this show's equivalent to bees, it made that jellyfish mad for being physically and verbally attacked. Though, 1 problem I do have is why are SpongeBob and Patrick wanting to hunt Jellyfish. It's the first episode and their portrayed like vicious animals that just attack just because they want to. Whereas in later episode, they have shown to be the show's equivalent to butterflies but only bees when necessary.
It's also fascinating to see how much your thoughts on episodes like Opposite Day and Hello Bikini Bottom have changed since you last talked about them.
and to be fair to Valentines Day. I do get Patrick's sentiment. After so much build up and hype, Patrick would've expected a lot more, so with something that really anyone would've done. You could take his frustration as disappointment. Plus, he was about to give SpongeBob the benefit here until everyone in Bikini Bottom just rubs their gifts by thanking SpongeBob, and being constantly disrupted, which did break Patrick's patience. Though, yeah, he went way too far with what he did.
Also, Kevin did come back in the later seasons. Other than that, Nice List all around. I'm glad to see you have opinions that don't always align with the majority of fans and aren't afraid to say them without talking down to them or being overly mean for having a hot take.
Keep up the good work, Strider. ;)

I think fundamentally what happens is people remember good bits of these episodes (most of these have great lines and moments), and don't judge the writing as a whole.
Random trivia note: The reason Spongebob can't develop muscles in his arms is because muscles are formed by damaged tissue scarring and healing, however whenever his limbs are damaged they get removed and regrown. Small touches are pretty good.

I personally don’t mind Jellyfishing or Jellyfish Jam but I can also see why some wouldn’t like these episodes because in Jellyfish Jam, it feels empty aside from a couple of jokes and the “thing that would not leave” trope can be a bit repetitive to some people.
As for Jellyfishing, while I do like it, it’s one of my least favorite episodes of Season One and don’t get me wrong because I do like Patrick but there are some times where his stupidity, obnoxiousness and selfishness really hurts certain episodes (Especially in the modern era of SpongeBob.) and torture jokes aren’t really funny to some people such as Strider who don’t like seeing people in pain yet I personally think it’s very unfair to disabled people because it’s like saying it’s okay to hurt people which is not.
I am sure someone else has said it before but overrated doesn’t mean it’s bad but moreso a likable thing that shouldn’t be in the first place.

As a kid I found Opposite Day hilarious because of the "I'm Squidward" bit and the ending and I thought the Magic Conch episode was an example of the Squidward suffering episode done right since they played it for absurdity.
The Snowball Effect I found to be entertaining for how it reversed the usual formula- this time Squidward becomes completely in on the tomfoolery and SpongeBob and Patrick have to flee.

With Squidward playing the role of a disgruntled Daffy Duck who wants Spongebob and Patrick to fight the same way Daffy wants Elmer to hunt Bugs instead of him. Even with that said, it also has some pretty good slapstick with the snowballs and the running gag of the snowballs hitting Squidwards warm fireplace gets a laugh out of me.

Since I knew that many people also love Spongebob Squarepants. I figured it would be fun to play the music from different episodes.
In the end, I played some music that was both from classic episodes and then the song known as BEST DAY EVER! The reactions were enjoyable.
I recall my crush at the time dancing around. I remember the elderly seemed to enjoy the music. The teenagers enjoyed it too.
Obviously, kids were jumping around while trying to make impressions of squidward. Overall, it was a funny time! :D

I always loved the snowball effect, as I’m someone who finds repetitive jokes way too funny. The scene where the stray snowballs kept landing in squidwards fireplace always gets me. I totally see what you mean when you say it’s weird for SB and Patrick to just ditch Squidward when he finally decides to play one of their games with them, but personally I guess I always saw it as a mildly humorous and intentionally anti-climactic subversion? Like, maybe sometimes it’s best Squidward doesn’t join their games because he’s just too competitive or something. Also, great video! I love seeing the SpongeBob videos more, though of course I always support you making videos about whatever you want

To me personally, the snowball effect episode is one of the earlier episodes I love during the holiday. You dont see Bikini Bottom in a snowy setting, atleast not in earlier seasons. I find the idea of having such an intense snowball fight kind of cool! You reenact a pretend war between friends? Sure, Squid gets overly carried away- though very creative in what i imagine was a tunnel down bunker of a fort.
I always saw plan b as their way of retreating- wars over pal, lets go inside and warm up. Have some hot chocolate and relax. I never thought they purposefully left Squiddy out to freeze, he just seemed so caught up in his own head that he didnt think to check past his own area of defence.

But weirdly enough, many girls liked him. He was bullied by some people as they called him "Timmy Turner" but we did have a strong friendship together.
He even went on to embrace it instead of fighting against it. He went on stage wearing Spongebob's clothes and then started to sing to us in his poorly made version of Spongebob's voice.
While I know he did sound awful. I have to give him credit- he did it all to stand against bullying and to show that he loves himself. He inspired me and my most favorite memory is when he kissed me during a time when I was at my lowest. It happened quickly and then he went off to Bootcamp. I haven't seen him since highschool but from what I've heard from friends. He still embraces his spongebob-ness and reminds everyone to stay hydrated.

I remember having friends that played a little too rough or got carried away with a game as a kid. I think that’s the reason why SpongeBob and Patrick left Squidward alone to have fun in The Snowball Effect. Perhaps the unfortunate truth is that even when Squidward tries to have fun with a game, he takes it too seriously. That time, it was too much for his neighbours and they wanted a warm and cozy break, so I actually found the ending to be ironically funny.

Yet he was so good at explaining how he felt about them that it became very understandable to why they were overrated to him.
By the way, I feel like Squidward deserves all of the credit in the Pizza Delivery episode for sticking up for SpongeBob because it shows that he understands him the most and knows how much SpongeBob longingly wanted the customer to love the pizza.
But, man, I loved the number one pick of this!
    Oh my gosh!
It’s hard for me to hate anything so I do have love for that jellyfishing episode but I always felt bad for Squidward in that episode and always felt extremely uncomfortable.
I was six when SpongeBob first came out and unlike everybody I didn’t like the SpongeBob SquarePants show at all.
There were episodes that creeped me out like that Jellyfishing episode, the episode where SpongeBob cheats on his boating test (I hated seeing that antenna from the walkie talkie sticking out of his head and knowing that it was inside of him, the episode where Squidward doesn’t take care of Gary and the medicine turns him and SpongeBob into snails, and Plankton’s actual debut episode where he actually controls SpongeBob’s brain.
I didn’t become a fan of the show till I was eight thanks to my best friend, Jill, for getting me into it. Lol
So yeah that Jellyfishing episode deserves that number one spot.😉

But aside from the few flop episodes, I still adore Spongebob. Funny thing is, Spongebob also kind of led me to another special interest of mine: mascots. Whether it be fast food, theme park, drink, or toy, I just adore mascots. Strider, I think you should one day make a list on the Top Ten Obscure Mascots. There's so many mascots out there that it could make an interesting list. I have a few REALLY obscure ones that would fit though: the 1970s incarnation of Jack and The Jack In The Box Bunch [Jack In The Box Restaurants, only 3 ads are on RUclips: Baseball, In The Park, and Jack In The Box Animated Commercial 1970], Matty Mattel and Sister Belle [Mattel Toys, interestingly they even hosted a show called Matty's Funday Funnies], Hasbro [Hasbro Toys 50s and 60s, interesting fact, voiced by Mae Questel who also did Olive Oyl from Popeye and Betty Boop], and Gilbert Giddyup and Speedy Mcgreedy [Hardee's 1970s]. Also, Cool Spot from 7-Up. His voice even sounds a bit like Boo's voice!

I think the point that “Does every Season 1-3 episode get an automatic 8-10 rating?” is pretty accurate.
Personally, I think it’s not just that people want an easier categorization, or even simple elitism; this may just be me, but I can see people _wanting_ to think that’s true.
Like, of course a majority of classic SpongeBob is awesome, but it’s a relatively short era compared to the rest of the show(5 years compared to the 20+ it’s been on; that’s only 1/4, and as the show goes on, even smaller!). And considering how long it’s been, and the changing culture around the development, it can be tough to let go of one of the episodes as a flop, since there’s only so many to love so dearly in the first place. Of course, this can go in reverse logic when it comes to good Season 6-8/current/spin-off episodes too, though not as emotionally weighted down by the relative scarcity.
Relative calculations are a crazy thing. You’d think ~100 episodes would be good enough, but considering so many usually-worse ones came after, it feels like the seasons are in measly 13s. I’m a fan of Problem Solverz(yes I am being 100% serious with that statement, my profile picture’s even from *my own* fan art of it) and that show only has ~30 episodes, but I’m fine with it, because I can just make fanworks of it whenever I want and people will consider it the best of the series, since people never really liked the original to begin with and mine is considered the “bad show turned good” version. Not many SpongeBob fans have that much relative stranglehold to reboot the classic era’s standards. I’m sure some have, but that’s a whole lot of people to impress(as well as the pressure of copyright takedowns if it’s _too_ popular, of course).
TL;DR: I’m not saying the “every classic episode is good” mentality is nostalgia blindness, but I can see why people want to think that it’s true just so they can get more out of the classic era itself. Confusing to put into words, I know.

Considering the amount of episodes, there’s some episodes that just don’t get enough credit.
Jellyfish Jam definitely had some good music and dance scenes, but I can see why it isn’t amazing.
The Sponge Who Could Fly definitely had it amazing with Patchy the Pirate, those scenes should never be forgotten! But jeez Patchy, calm down, even I know there’s other ways for it to happen! I can see what you mean when it was considered overrated.
Valentine’s Day, I like some of the scenes, and I like ‘The Paper‘, it’s an episode I like, but never watch it all the time. However, I can see why it’s also pretty infamous.
Club SpongeBob, it could have been an interesting episode, if you did want me to make a rewrite, I‘d be honoured! I still have some memories of the episode, there were a few good moments here and there, but it is a Squidward-punishing episode, and I feel awful for the guy, at least the 11 minutes line was good, I‘ll give it that!
“Side note: Insert more credits to continue, don’t worry, this machine does NOT take money.“

I‘m back now! So where were we? Well, right here!
Opposite Day! Need I say more, the title says it all. It could have a rewrite too, but the final product back then, seemed to have an overrated status as of recently. Obviously, the Squidward impression is probably the best thing, voice-wise, so that gets a plus from me!
The Snowball Effect, I enjoy it, but definitely not a ten. How many episodes deserve a rewrite? I could make it better by putting a price on SpongeBob and Patrick to be buried by snow, more just to give them both a taste of their own medicine. It does sound cruel though, I‘d like to hear your thoughts on how some of them could be improved.
MuscleBob BuffPants, the first three minutes of this episode is rather good, but I can see why it’s not one of the best. I‘m surprised that the anchor can follow anyone at all! And yes, I like Pizza Delivery! The moral is very important, you have to know that if you want to be fit, you have to put a lot of effort into it, and I respect that.
I‘m your Biggest Fanatic, the Jellyfish are the biggest stars of the show in this one! I liked some of the jokes, but the pie joke was one that even I didn’t get. I’m at least glad that Kevin got what he deserved, and Patrick‘s “Touch. Don‘t Touch.” joke is a bit of a laugh. Another good moral is again, very important, and I can see why some people are heartbroken when they find out. Just be your best self, and try to make the world better, anything can make a difference.
Hello Bikini Bottom! I don’t think it’s that good, the only good thing I can say is SpongeBob and Squidward’s Ukulele and Clarinet talents, but the Stop-Motion episode should definitely be watched more!
Honourable mentions-wise, I’m glad that you like Pizza Delivery episode, and I just enjoy it, probably a 9 from me, but even if not that score, still a classic! And Bank Geeks is an undeniably brilliant episodes! It may be hyped, but the Sweet Victory song is amazing to me!
Jellyfishing? What happened! Looking back, I can see what you mean, it really didn’t hold up well today. Even when I can be more lenient on episodes like Season 8 of Thomas, I know not everyone will agree!
Overall, another brilliant video mate, and thanks for reading! 👍

I love thhe sponge who could fly because ofbthe walk cycles. I had seen every episode up to that point multiple times, and I appreciated all the unique and creative walk cycle that we hadn't seen before, showcasing what the spongebob character model is capable of (because he is an "exaggerate his shape" cartoon but there's a limit so it's not a Ren and Stimpy or Rocco's Modern life). And he always managed to beliveably walk towards the camera without his feet slipping, it's quite impressive from a technical stand point. Plus the song was a banger that perfectly matched the walk cycle he was on. It was peak editing.

The pie thing is just a random non sequitur, where the joke is it doesn't make sense after the episode is very much "this is this way for this reason."

It’s true that the townsfolk in that were mean-spirited but at least “The SpongeBob Who Could Fly” has some justification in comparison to WhoBob unfortunately.
There are people who do get ridiculed for their dreams and it’s not the best special but also not a bad one either.
I don’t mind these episodes apart from Squidward being tortured but I get where Strider is coming from and I respect his opinion. 🤔🥲

Great video, I remember when Nickelodeon was hyping The Sponge Who Could Fly so hard, and when it aired I was so disappointed. That happened a few times with certain episodes, The Best Day Ever is another example of the hype machine under delivering IMO.

Why is Squidward always wanting to move away from Bikini Bottom?
I've got a theory that maybe Squidward has a father outside Bikini Bottom.

    10) Honestly, I love this one. I'm a sucker for both of the songs, a lot of the jokes landed with me, and Gary having the solution was a nice change of pace. Though, I do understand this type of episode is a bit formulaic.
    9) I... haven't seen this one, being frank. ;^^ It definitely looks like it would annoy me. Though, the Patchy intro is indeed golden. 👌
    8) Thank _you!_ I see this one referenced EVERYWHERE and the episode just makes me feel uncomfortable. I hate misunderstandings like these because all you need to fix the problem is to *communicate* (something I could stand to do more often).
    7) Aw, what...! But this one's a classic! I get that it's dumb and a little repetitive, but every joke had me cackling. I think Squidward is what makes it for me.
    6) Thank you. Thank you. _Thank you!_ I can't STAND this repetitive, mean-spirited shlock! Yes, Opposite Day is a timeless concept, but SpongeBob and Patrick take this way too far. And for what? Thinking that Squidward moving out is also a part of "Opposite Day"??? UGH! I hate it! I've never been more satisfied to see Squidward chase the boys away with a bulldozer.
    5) This one's another classic, but I can definitely see why you don't like it. Personally? I love it. It's just good, stupid fun. Plus, the duo ditched Squidward because he practically went insane. I'd ditch 'im too. ;^^
    4) Eh, I'm a bit on defense for this one. The Anchor Arms commercial is a classic, and I like the concept of the anchor toss. But the whole thing blowing up in SpongeBob's face _is_ a bit predictable. I liked the jokes, though!
    3) Yet another classic! But... understandably so. What can I say? People like seeing entitled jerks get what they deserve. And every joke lands with me, every time. The pie thing does have me scratching my head, but whatever works, I suppose.
    2) Yeah, I have no defense for this one. Conceptually? Among the best. Execution? Ehhhhh...
    1) Been a minute since I've seen this one, but I remember most of Squidward's punishment being karma. He's a punching bag, but in a more approachable way. Though, I definitely understand that this one wouldn't be your cup of tea.
Great list, overall! I do like the variety content you've taken on in more recent years, but it's nice to return to our ol' pal SpongeBob every once in a while.

I'm surprised Squirrel Jokes didn't make the list. The whole episode consists of Spongebob becoming a comedian and doing the equivalent of blackface on stage at Sandy's expense. He is just an awful friend to Sandy in this episode and never once does he apologize to Sandy for making fun of her species in front of a live audience. Sandy is later harassed as she tries to go grocery shopping just because of her race as a direct result of Spongebob's actions. This shows that his jokes aren't harmless and hurting someone he's supposed to care about. Sandy does the mature thing at first and tries to confront Spongebob and convince him to stop it seems like Spongebob is gonna make the right choice but then he comes back on stage with a pair of buck teeth and makes fun of Squirrels again and portrays them as stupid and uneducated.
Sandy does get revenge by pretending to find the jokes funny and inviting Spongebob over. Then she acts stupid to the point of endangering Spongebob by "forgetting" to give him water which he needs in order to stay alive just to drill it into his thick skull. Because apparently, Spongebob has to be taught that racism is bad when that should be obvious even to someone like Spongebob. It is just an awful episode.

I am also a “Sponge who could fly” lover which it’s definitely one of my favorites from SpongeBob of all time but at the same time, I can understand why some wouldn’t like it because even I agree that the townsfolk being mean-spirited is the only thing I dislike about it but I do remember having it on VHS during my early childhood days and at least I felt bad for Patchy at the ending but can’t help endlessly with the mariachi band randomly popping up and playing which I personally find it extremely hilarious. 🤤🥴🤣🤣

There's not always a reason for an episode being negative. I see that it's more a choice of whether you enjoy classic episodes or episodes that try to be different.
