If you’re paranoid & a conspiracy theorist then I am too. I’ve forgotten too many passwords, gone through the re-setting hoops, tried to get a real human being to help me (not an auto-reply) to put a lot of faith in technology. When it works the way it should then it can be wonderfully helpful. But it’s too easy to not think about all the issues you’ve raised. I, too, have spreadsheets which are printed out & safely stored where my trusted executor/friend/family can find all the information needed about not just passwords, but all health, insurance, financial information along with final arrangements. You HAVE to think about these things, folks, for the people left behind. Thank you Ceri for bringing this to our attention 🥰.

Great topic. I'm so bad at not remembering my passwords. I always say what will happen if the Internet goes down. Everyone saves so much they would be clueless on what to do. I'm still more comfortable with doing things on paper. Lol

I have a tiny journal I put all my passwords in. If Change the password I just erase the old one and add the new one. I do not keep where my family can’t access.

I’m going through something similar with my bank card. I’m glad on one hand of the security, but so very frustrated on the other hand. At one point they asked questions that I was afraid to answer thinking maybe I wasn’t speaking with a real customer service at the bank. Then of all things I was watching RUclips videos of scammers and that made me even more nervous. I think we all have a love/hate relationship with technology.

Yes, this has been on my mind lately as I use an app for ordering medication for myself and my mother and it is finger print protected. So I’m now having to think if there is a way around this or change settings. Yes we can easily embrace these changes without knowing the consequences.

Technology baffles me for sure!! How is your relative now? Are they out of hospital... and... do they realize how blessed they are to have you looking out for them?
I had something happen years ago when my husband bought me an Apple tablet. I don't use Apple product, but P.C. I did have years and years before an Apple Ipod but couldn't for the life of me remember the password I'd used that many years previous and was denied access to this new tablet. Even using the finger print wouldn't allow me in. We returned the tablet to the store and they couldn't figure it out either so I ended up having my husband return it. I prefer paper and pen any day to store information and only use my laptop and phone to listen to RUclips videos. Your videos are top of my list! Totally appreciate your talents.

Wonderful Discussion, Ceri. Sadly we lost our parents, unexpectedly, a few years ago. They died just 11 days apart. We thought we had planned ahead as they aged. My brother was a signer on their bank account. We learned that being a signer meant nothing after their death. He could write a check while they were alive but as far as taking care of the funds after their death, he had to be an "owner" on the account. Who knew, what's the difference?? I've said this before ... our world has become quite overwhelming. Thank you for sharing, I always enjoy "Coffee with Ceri."

Very good talk. But sometimes Nothing can be done; consider the bitcoin issue one man faced. It’s been written many times. Bitcoin is unable to help him get his money. Nothing can be done without his password. I have an analog safety. My executor, and son, has everything. It is a matter of trust. His daughter will inherit all my info if necessary. I am an aged relation after all. There is only so much one can do. But I’ll be gone and it ain’t gonna be my problem.

Even thoug I'm on computer everyday, I don't save my passwords to the computer. I have an address book which keeps my accounts with security information in it just as you would keep telephone information. Easy to access due to alphabet index. Simple and works for me. Let me back up , there are some accounts where the password and user info is saved. But I randomly change the info. I know people who've had the different password apps and needed to have a password to get into the app in order to access the account. I also note the date I've needed to change. It has worked for me for more than 20 years and at my age (74) often our thoughts escape us. A trusted acquaintance is essential to allow them to access in case of an emergency. I thought about fingerprint and eye recognition but if something would happen to either recognition, what does one do then?

Spot on! I have the same anxieties and trust issues. The only thing i can see wrong with your giving the envelope to a trusted friend is what if something happens to them about the same time as your demise? 🤷‍♀️ My son is an IT specialist ~ he built my computer so he can get into it regardless. As for passwords, i keep a simple alphabetized notebook with all my passwords. Works for me. My mail occasionally contains letters from my various doctors and hospitals that are sent to inform me and other patients that their systems have been hacked and my information "may have been" compromised. It seems to me to be a lose/lose situation but I do not see a solution. Now if you will excuse me, i am going outside to apologize to my ugly, stained and cracked driveway for the way i complain about it. At least i do not have to deal with parking issues such as yours. Yikes!😂

We have that Apple thing that remembers your passwords. It’s called keychain and that information is password protected. We use it and it’s brilliant. Also, most devices that have face recognition also have a password which means that when my husband is away I can access his phone even though I don’t have his face.

Great topic and very important one too. 🙂👍 I ran into something similar many years ago when my ex-husband passed away and I was trying to pay his final bills. Thankfully, he was creature of habit and he used the same password for everything. I on the other hand am not, I change my passwords at the beginning of every year and I have binder that I call "In case I get abducted by aliens or hit by a bus" It has all the important information that my kids or a significant other will need in case I'm not here anymore. I update the binder at the same time as the passwords. I used to sell life insurance and would remind clients or potential clients to look at these things at least once a year to make sure that their families or friends had all the information needed just in case. Preparedness is the best way to take care of your family. Thanks for the great talk! Have a fabulous week!

Good chat! Some tech companies have provisions for nominating someone else for access to your account in case of death/incapacity. I know that Facebook has this and I think Apple does as well. I have told the person that I nominated so that they are aware. As for all of the other online accounts that I have, I think I’ve just come to the conclusion that online things are not secure and I’ve had to accept it and move on. I refuse to have hundreds of random different letter/number/symbol combinations as passwords b/c it is ridiculous to think that my brain has the space to remember them all and which one goes with which account when you aren’t supposed to keep that information anywhere else to help remember … and, as it turns out, your information isn’t safe anyway b/c the website itself can be hacked. There are a very few “important” accounts that I have different passwords for, everything else is the same one.

Interesting topic Ceri, I used to have a loyalty card to a bookshop, I will never ever have another store loyalty card ever again because their system got hacked and all my info, address, birthday, phone number, email etc ended up on the dark web and unfortunately the store was unable to get everyone's info removed, I'm just glad I don't live at that address anymore, but I certainly have a lot of scam phone calls that had the system not been hacked, I might not be getting now, also interestingly on the topic of fingerprints, my daughter and I decided we'd have a trip to America, and at customs she got cleared and they wouldn't let me through because my fingerprints were not clear enough, I guess from doing craft for donkeys years must have done something to my fingerprints, eventually they let me in, but it was certainly a big deal to be able to get clearance. Great topic though, very interesting, thanks for bringing the topic up Ceri 😀

I don't do Apple stuff except for (once) trying Apple tv. The security questions were ridiculous! 'Where were you born?' easy... born: Xcity. 'Where was your mother born?' again: Xcity. Sorry, you can't give the same answer to two different questions. Okay... next possible question, 'Who was your 3rd grade teacher?' uh... that was 60 years ago! I don't know! 'What was your first car?' uh.. the one my father found for me. I don't know. Advice from others, 'make up an answer'. But then you have to write down the made up answer and how does that help me with getting into things without pulling out my notes? I worry a lot about this kind of stuff in case of severe injury, illness or death. I also worry about all the 'auto-pay' set ups that any caretaker/heir may not easily know about. That's why I have a lot of bills still sent to the house. At least they can access the postal mail without my fingerprint!
Oh, and after signing up for Apple tv, I found out it doesn't work with hardly any Android/Windows tech equipment I had so - after spending 20 minutes setting up an account, I cancelled it almost immediately! And left a note for myself not to be tempted again. I'm just not an Apple/iPhone person.

It’s a tricky one, isn’t it. In the olden days it would have been a case of finding a physical key. Nowadays most of our private information is stored on/ via electronic devices and we need to decide whether and when to share our login details with people we trust. And there’s the financial information on the one hand, and social/ personal information (including photos) on the other hand. One option would be to have a declutter of our electronically stored social/ personal information before sharing login details, in the same way as we may have a declutter of our physical environment, before inviting others into our living space. I do think that the default setting should be for privacy to be maintained beyond the grave if a person, whether by accident or design, has not shared login details with anyone.
