Why didn't/doesn't Netanyahu push back against the Hamas numbers of deaths during the war. He only did when talking about the Rafah operation, but everyone seems to accept the Hamas death count. The 1 to 1 radio is not a push back!
Very interesting. Question: why does not Netanyahu fire Gallant? Does Gallant control a block of the Likud? I know Bibi had to back off firing him once but that was over Levin;s justice reforms.

Re: Tablet/Israel Update Sep 4, 2024 Excellent analysis, thank you. Gentlemen: I have been considering some questions, and would like your opinion, perhaps these could form a discussion point in a future Tablet/Israel Update? 1. Why am I wrong: The US should give Iran 24 hours to return all hostages, produce unconditional surrender of both Hamas and Hezbollah, and stand-down the Yemeni rebels. In 24 hours and one minute, if these have not been completed, the US military will destroy strategic targets throughout Iran, blockade all land/sea/air ports, interrupt inter-Iranian communications, halt all inter-Iranian financial transactions, and demand regime change from Iran. a) Is it because these consequences would be perceived as acts of war, as compared with acts of defense for an ally? b) Would the US Congress be required to vote for such an action, such as a war declaration? c) Would this achieve the goals Israel has outlined? d) Do you think recent Sino/Russian "alliances" would stand behind Iran militarily? I was thinking that, as we observe there are no genuine consequences that can be delivered against a sub-state terror army, does endangering the viability of it's sponsor change the calculus? And, from the glass house archives, we must ask, "Would the US be able to mount a successful defense were it's actions similarly challenged?"
@peterdalton649: At this moment and under this administration, especially fighting for its life politically and electorally, not to mention intellectually from its abhorrent public and foreign policy, what incentive (leaving aside proportional justification) do you think this administration has to specifically make threats and attack another country, especially when they've stated on the record (dishonestly) that Iran had nothing to do with Hamas's invasion of Israel. You're stating an opinion, which can be wrong, but it's difficult to disprove an opinion. There are risks, benefits, and potential repercussions (bilaterally and internationally) to all potential actions. Let's be clear: Hamas just executed an American Citizen. Grounds for action are established, but the all-out war you call for is a bit of a stretch with international law now (this is not Sarajevo, 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand). a) perceived by whom? US public? Other nations? Individual critics of the US? International organizations and institutions? b) if it were a declaration of war it would require Congress to declare it per the constitution (yet many military actions have circumvented this throughout history). c) IF the US could pull all that off, COULD it achieve all that you've asked? Doubtful. d) I don't believe an official defense alliance currently exists with China or Russia, but it's been discussed publicly for a while now. I would suspect that such actions by the US against Iran would elicit responses from either or both countries (likely the Chinese would allow Russia to do the dirty work as they're oft-inclined). These are my opinions, clearly not those of the hosts, but IMHO this is a bit of a stretch.
Question for Mike- in one of your lectures in Hillsdale College you mentioned the Obama-Biden view of the middle east. The assumptions and approach towards the balance of power in the middles east seems to have a connecting line to the State Department's views in the 50's as described in your book, Ike's Gamble. How did the situation come about where there is an entrenched deep state bureaucratic machine in the State Dept with these views that seem to dictate appeasement policies towards America's (and Israel's adversaries)? PS. Mike would you say that Gadi is the male right wing version of a "childless cat lady"?
I think thisd was your best episode. I appreciated the explanation of what I see as misguided coverage of the demonstrations in Israel that were very upsetting to me. Do you have any breakdown of the demonstrators and how it correlates to the general population? My hunch is the demonstrators are a very thin slice of Israeli society -- but you would not know that by the coverage.
The real problem of the deal is not even Philadelphi which is a problem but it’s that Gazans will be allowed to come back to northern Gaza in 3rd or 7th day (I don’t remember rn) of the ceasefire. If the Gazans comes back to northern the war will be affectively over because Israel will have a world of trouble to evacuate the people who came back in case Hamas breaks the deal and the second phase won’t will be stuck. In that case the war would be stoped with an Israeli defeat and Hamas still holding a few dozens of hostages.
