    Yes, as an experienced blender user... I found I had the same problem as others did with it applying the displace modifier to the inner cylinder as well as the outer one even though I made my vertex group and applied it. You must apply the solidify modifier (by clicking the little down arrow icon next to the modifier and selecting apply).. THEN make the vertex group and add displace...etc. Took me a minute to figure out that's what I was doing wrong. Thx for the tut!.

      im having trouble with group vertex, it only highlight only one side, in the video i can see he turn the cylinder around few times and it highlighed everything.
      I then watch another video on how to group it by ctrl L, when i then apply the rest of the method if did not work, it is so frustrating, because I have been doing it for hourssssssssssssssss, and this is my first time using blender, maybe a few key points that are missing in the video.

    For anyone still doing this and getting trouble, make sure you APPLY the modifiers which can be found in the little down arrow on each modifier and you need to get out of edit mode to apply it

    Everytime i want to print somthing. i first search for files to look for options, every time i end up deciding to make something myself because i can't find what i want or i don't like the way it's already made, i end up on a blender tutorial, and its totally worth it. I learned a lot more than i thought i would with this tutorial, i didn't knew how to setup a vertex group before. Thanks a lot man!

    Thanks for the video! Does this method works on newer versions of Blender? I'm stuck on min 1:35, it selects different (only outer shell) and nothing works afterwards. Not sure what it is I am doing wrong, so looking forward to making these!

    Hi, thank you so much for sharing this video. I have hit a bump in the road and at 1:35 you talk about pressing tab to open edit mode. When I do this, it doesn't select the inside of the cylinder as well as the outside. I even downloaded the same.version as in your video and still the same.issue. can you advise how to rectify this?
    Again, thanks for the informative video! 🤙

    Anyone having issues with a jagged texture after doing the displacement modifier, try going back to your texture tab and increasing the filter size under image sampling. It will smooth out the transitions both along the surface to mitigate the pixel-like effect, as well as give a smoother vertical transition for the rolled material making cobblestones and stuff like that look a little more natural.

    I'm after a granite stone block texture so I can make slips that can be printed, painted and applied to a wall to give the effect of real stone like you would find in say a old castle. I get involved with sfx with a local film school that runs classes for young people in the holidays and this is the only way I can see to create something like this. Trying to build a relatively cheap set to create a stone arched doorway.
    Thanks

    Hiho!
    Thanks for the hints! I needed a few hours to find my fault why i also could not exclude the inner side from being textured. In the current 3.3 Blender i found the APLLY option for the solidify modifier behind the camera symbol in a dropdown menue. After applying this i could proceed as described. It is a pity that the UIs from Blender and zBrush make it so difficult to use them. Years ago i had a program called Cubify Sculpt, where you simply said wrap that picture along a path and voila it was wrapped. Only issue was that it could not doe it seamless and there was always a few milimeter seam.

    You could also use the Boolean modifier in blender to make the ends perfectly flat, or also manually scale the vertices flat. I wouldn’t want to download a whole application just to do one simple step, as I don’t already use meshmixer.

    Great tutorial the file cobblestone link you gave is over 100mb in size all 3d printing uploads have a maximum 100mb no more and the size dimensions were off had to work the xyz dimensions to mm as well as the camera and set to default size so what you see is how large the item actually is or you can adjust as long as it doesn't go over ten inches which I think is the maximum a 3d printer can create, so the object is automatically configured for 3d printing ,
    also the density and detail of the original download file because of the UV map image displacement raised the price at CraftCloud to $50.00 and $19.00 shipping I am going to try to reduce the vertice faces to 2/3 the original face count to see if it makes a better price.

    Phew! I got there in the end, with a texture roller for old flagstones. And I really appreciate your efforts to make a video showing how to do this. But I have some comments:
    First, please don't say "If you can click a mouse, you can do this in ten minutes" and "The process is incredibly simple and doesn't require any modeling experience"! It has taken me about 8 viewings of this video, several doughnut tutorials, many false starts and a lot of head-scratching to be able to follow what you have done, and I am still not entirely clear. If you offer to take a newbie through a process, you must explain every move, please!
    You selected to make a cylinder 100cm by 750cm, which is enormous. Any reason why? My final .stl file came out incredibly tiny on the Cura buildplate, more like 7.5mm high. Does this matter, or should it just be ignored?
    At 0:52 you lifted the cylinder up without explanation, in fact while you were talking about the next step.Was it important to do this?
    I got stuck at the selection of the outer vertex group, which you did not explain, just showed some mouse clicks. I still don't know how you select the ring of vertices around the bottom rim. I eventually succeeded with shift-clicking little groups, avoiding the inner vertices.
    When adding the wall thickness, it would help a lot if you could put a caption about clicking the 'Apply' button, as I failed to do this several times... It's at 1:05, where you seem to scroll away.
    At around 2:21 it is very confusing. You seem to click on 'Apply', then 'Deselect', then 'Select' while saying that one should click on the plus button to add a new group, which was the first step.
    Most of the rest worked reasonably OK, then you mentioned Meshmixer - so I downloaded that, but could not follow what you were doing at 4:53 where you increased the subdivisions to 6. I first exported into Meshmixer with 6 subdivisions, which almost ground it to a halt, then I realised the multiplication factor and exported at 4, all was fine. When I brought my trimmed roller back into Blender, the subdivisions were at 1. Increasing them started to massively slow down the computer without increasing quality at all. Can't see how you changed the value to 6, and not sure if that makes much difference. I will try out Michael K's suggestion to soften the jaggedness...
    Sorry if this sounds like a huge list of complaints. They are really minor niggles, as I have so wanted to be able to create texture rollers, and you did promise that it needed no modeling experience! Perhaps adding some captions to make the processes clearer would help those of us who really are struggling with the basics.
    I printed off your roller from Thingiverse, and thank you for that. It is really excellent and works well on a filament printer.
    Do keep up the good work and do more tutorials. Please remember we are not all expert at using Blender!

    • @CraftLogic
      @CraftLogic  4 года назад +2

      First, thanks for watching and I’m glad you were able to figure it out! I appreciate the feedback and will certainly try to make things a little clearer in the future! I’ll try to answer some of your questions here, though! The size I chose for the cylinder was based on my export settings, which ultimately determine the size of the STL when opened in other programs. I should definitely do a video on that process! Lifting the cylinder at 0:52 was just my preference, not necessary. Selection of the outer vertices was done by clicking and dragging over them. If you aren’t in wireframe mode, it will only select the outside. I did have to rotate the view to ensure I selected all of them. I believe I simply double clicked the top and bottom rings to select them but there is another hot key for selecting loops that I can’t recall at the moment. At 1:05, I mentioned we would apply a skin modifier but I agree I could have emphasized the need to click the button. When I created the vertex groups, the deselect and select buttons just perform those actions on your group, I was simply showing the grouped vertices.
      As for meshmixer, I did a video showing how to use the Plane Cut feature that I mentioned here, though that step is totally optional. I have come up with a better way to handle the ends of the cylinder and may do an updated video at some point. Anyway, again, I’m glad you were able to manage and hope you enjoy the rollers you end up making!

    Please excuse this very ignorant question and please understand I know nothing about 3D printing but before I even consider doing more investigating I’m very curious typically patterned rollers are very small - can the 3D printer make a decent size or close to a normal size patterned rolling brush comparable to what a normal roller for painting walls would be? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I have seen very limited options when it comes to buying, unlike clay rollers with unlimited minimalist options. So Im now considering making my own if it’s doable.

      Be sure to Apply the solidify modifier before you do that stuff. I haven’t used the newest version of blender but I have been told that the apply button isn’t displayed the same way. Adding the modifier from the menu doesn’t actually apply it to the model even though it shows the effect. If it hasn’t been applied then there isn’t actually and inside surface, even though it appears to be there

    How do you make the pattern continuous so that when rolled out on clay for example there isn't a break in the pattern? I'm thinking I'd like to draw my own pattern but would like it continuous so a break can't be seen in the pattern when rolled out on the clay? Thank you.

    • @CraftLogic

      This one isn’t seamless but it isn’t too difficult to clean up the seam after rolling. If you want to try making a seamless roller, search RUclips for how to make a seamless pattern in photoshop or another photo editor and use that for the texture pattern.

    • @CraftLogic
      @CraftLogic  3 года назад

      In the modifier panel you can change how the modifier appears while modeling and how it will render. You can keep the view setting lower so your computer can work faster but keep the render setting higher so that the final file still comes out smooth.

    *That's a great tutorial! My roll pins came out perfect!*
    But... may I ask you for another tip? How do I do it on a different meshes like a cube or a plane? I almost achieved what I wanted, but I keep struggling with the "UV editing" step. Everything goes well when I do cylinder, but I can't seem to scale the texture when it comes to a cube/plane shapes. Maybe I'm doing the subdivide thing wrong? Or I should somehow prepare the new object before I do things with it?
    Once again, thanks for the tutorial. It was so simple, yet such a big step forward. You're the best :)

    • @CraftLogic
      @CraftLogic  3 года назад +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video! You should be able to follow a similar process with a cube. I’m not sure why it isn’t working out. You should be able to scale the texture using the same steps outlined in the video. I actually used the same process on a cube to make a texture stamp. You just need to subdivide the mesh so there is enough geometry to accept the detail. After UV unwrapping, you should still be able to adjust the UVs to scale and reposition the texture.

      That is an interesting idea...roots, rocks, leaves?

    • @WaldoNevada
      @WaldoNevada 3 года назад +1

      @@CraftLogic Yes, ideally all 3. I imagine a jungle-themed base (say for Seraphon) would be accompanied by other 3D plastic plants that would be glued onto the base after the fact. So maybe just rocks, roots, and vines for the rolling pin itself? I think distinguishing between roots and vines might be difficult, so the vines could be thinner, more rope-like, and have ivy-type leaves.
      I know this might not be doable, but It would be really cool to meld a custom jungle rolling pin with an Aztec temple floor rolling pin. Either combining the two into one rolling pin or using a jungle-themed rolling pin in conjunction with a separate Lizardmen-Aztec-themed rolling pin. With the ultimate goal being the appearance of an overgrown temple in ruins.
      The Aztec temple rolling pin from Green Stuff World lacks any true Seraphon theming. The GSW rolling pin has hieroglyphs depicting Aztec-humans rather than Aztec-Lizardmen and lizards. Ultimately making it useless for most Seraphon/Lizardmen players. So designing a true Seraphon-themed temple floor rolling pin would be amazing even on its own! Maybe even better than a jungle base lol.

    Is there a method to have a pattern that will match stone edges if I need a wider length than the roller itself?

    • @CraftLogic
      @CraftLogic  3 года назад +1

      You could try working with a tileable texture image. Thinking about it from the practical application perspective, it will be difficult to do in practice without some degree of manual cleanup of the join. You could try making an expandable roller by attaching two together with a pattern that continues across them. That would allow you to make a roller bigger than can fit on a printer, though it might bring challenges of its own.

      Interesting. I haven’t updated/used Blender in a while as I’ve been using other software. There is a difference between adding a modifier and applying it. Adding it will allow you to see the effect but it won’t actually do anything to your geometry until it is applied.
