You may want to add a roof net to stop crows killing the chickens. My mate had to kill two crows after they killed 5 chickens here in Japan. The net stopped all the murdering
@@jasonmendelli6023 thanks for the tip Jason! Jon's looking into roof nets now 😅
@@CampOutWest my pleasure, guess you'll also need to raise the "roof" height to 2 metres so you can walk around inside. Simple wooden posts in the corners and the middle of each fence should suffice. 👍
You could name the hens after Welsh singers, Shirley, Cerys, Bonnie and Duffy 🤗
Brilliant idea and if one turns out to be a rooster how about Sir Tom Jones?
… and if one turns out to be a cockerel, he can be Tom 😁
( and the previous comment has just appeared 🤣
I agree with this. Defo one as cerys 😊
You guys work so hard . I really look forward to watching your antics.😊 Tom ( Jones ) or Max (Boyce) for the cockerel (s)
What a great idea !
Well done kids! (I'm an old git) you don't need a posh track saw, you can make your own, there's plenty of good videos on RUclips make a long one and a short one, very handy and simple to make, if I was nearer I'd happily make them for you.
You might want to think about buying Belle cement mixer, petrol, very handy for what you guys are doing and instead of using post crete make a dry mix of concrete, ie ballast and cement, get a ton bag delivered and it'lll last for ages, and mix with cement at 6 to 1 ratio, then put in the holes tamp it down with a bit of 3x2 and add some water, much cheaper than post crete. It'll pay for the mixer, youll get one for for about £150-200.
Oh, and make your hole twice the size and square, its all about weight.
I love the hens and the coup!
I love that you are sharing your journey with us... and yet I'm always amazed at how different things can be... building techniques, raw materials, tools and methods... from country to country.
Thanks Tyler! We think the same when we watch other RUclipsrs, epically with the names of tools and things haha!
You will find that the chooks will love the woodchips. Ensure you change them on a regular basis for the sake of the health of the birds & the wood chips will then help your soil.
When you mow your grass, throw the clippings in the chook cage & your hens will think you the greatest humans ever. When you store the eggs, put them with the pointy side down, which is how they are placed In egg cartons.
When you name the chooks, give them names like Sunday Dinner & Christmas lunch so you don't feel bad about eating them.
20:53 the dog is like "what can I do dad?" 😂
Maggie is Jon's shadow ❤
Fair play to you both for living your dream this channel has been great entertainment, big respect to Emily for being such a grafter not many women would get stuck in like she has
Favourite video yet, it’s all coming together beautifully guys. Cannot wait to visit and see it in person!
Thank you guys 😀
You might want to give those bolts a coating of grease, as if you do need to undo them they won't be rusted up.
Forgot to do that in the rush to get it make, fingers crossed as they are exterior grade coated coachbolts they will still come off.
The sheer graft you two put in us what I like most about this channel...hats off to you!
Cheers Arthur! 🙂
Oh my goodness, how gorgeous is the deck & tent? Fabulous job guys x
Thanks so much Andrea! We can't believe we are finally at the stage of being able to put them up. We went mattress shopping today, excited to get them all set up inside 😃
@@CampOutWest how exciting!
Always look forward to your vlogs. The chicken coop is unusual, but robust and serves its purpose well. If they are laying, keep the eggshells, sterilise, crush finely and add back to their feed...the calcium strengthens their eggshells.
Wish you two well, stay safe and looking forward to the next vlog.
Thanks Jeff, we were so excited when Nestera offered to send us one as they were our favourites we came across after all our research, so feeling very lucky we got sent one. Thanks for the tip of the eggshells, such a great idea 😄
The grid of noggins shot on the diagonal was really beautiful!
Jon did a great job 🙂
I've so been looking forward to seeing an update from you guys and you didn't disappoint. Love your new hens, how about Fudge, Honey, Truffle and Mocha for names? Your new decking pad for the glamping tent is awesome and loving your attention to detail, trying to ensure the life is extended and contingencies for down the line. Looking forward to the next installment.
I suggest the name Colonel Sanders for the suspect cockerel.
Fantastic idea!
Thanks Frieda, we are so in love with our new hens! We could watch them for hours 🥰
It's hard to tell from the footage but you may have a rooster there 😬 They will have long skinny pointy feathers around their neck and tail whereas the hens have wider rounder feathers. The coop is really cool - they look like a very happy and safe flock! 😊
Re: Chook names, in Australia, anyone with red hair was usually called 'Blue', so I reckon the red chook should be called Blue. And to clarify, chickens in Australia are called chooks. (pronounced like sook & book)
Noel, I think we might have to start calling our girls Chooks I love it!
@@CampOutWest Yeah, do it. You can practice the Aussie Chook Call ..." heeeerrre chook chook chook.."
I was just thinking how nice it would be to see how you are getting on and you posted a vlog! Thank you! BTW, the biggest problem with chickens these days is often cats. If you do have a cockerel he will be your watchdog picking up when there are hawks overhead or other trouble around and warning the hens who will run for cover.
Thanks Stephanie ☺we do have a few wild cats around here so hoping the fence (and Maggie) will keep them at bay haha! Maggie's cat radar is very good 😅
+1 for the cockerel watching over the rest. My neighbour's cockerel will take on anything that comes near his territory and is far more effective than a dog.
Maggie is hilarious, she was checking your work at every turn. Love the progress. Stay blessed.
Thanks Elaine 🥰 Maggie is enjoying the cooler weather so she can be outside with us more
Great work you two…..looking fab. The chickens are living their best life. Great coop! ❤
Thanks Julie! We can't believe they are ours, we could sit and watch them for hours! ❤ very grateful for Nestera for gifting us a coop and for all of you watching our channel as without it we wouldn't be lucky enough to be sent such lovely products to try! So thank you!
@23.27 ….. a lot more work than people realise.
Great stuff
Jon did an amazing Job!
Brilliant to see the rebuild phase start and the demolition phase entering completion. Good to see the smallholding initiated and look forward to see what other additions will be arriving over the coming months.
Thanks Joe! So excited to start work on our toilet and shower block next. I'd love to also get Jon a goat next (it's his dream!) but shhh don't tell him haha! I'd love to do it as a surprise
@@CampOutWest Excellent for both organic mowing the grass plus fresh healthy goat milk daily. Here to help anyway I can. Jo
Nice to see you making some positive progress after all that hard clearing you've done... you must feel chuffed to bits to finally be making your mark on the land. Well done!
Such a good feeling to be able to start building things now. We are starting work on our shower/toilet block next, so can't wait!
I get so excited every time i get the notification that you have a new video out as i love seeing how you all are and what hard work you've been doing and im never disappointed snd so proud of your work ethos and that you are doing it in such a planet friendly way , the chickens are lovely i think Welsh singer names would be so appropriate and if one is a rooster its got to be tom jones, thankyou so much for allowing us to fillow you in this exciting adventure, keep up the good work and take care of each other and as slways big kiss for maggie xx
Thank you for your continued support 🥰 we do love Tom Jones! Such a good suggestion ❤
Your genuine excitement about your new hens is so adorable. 😊
Love your chickens. How about vegetable names for them such as Carrot, Potato, Celery, Radish? 🐔
Attila the Hen, Jabba the Cluck, Hen Solo, Chick Jagger
1. Love your videos!!
2. The chickens. Looks great
3. I am a senior woman who lives a bit thru you.
Me too! Er, but not woman.
With the arrival of the chickens you are officially homesteaders. You have made amazing progress.
I know these are laying hens but when you invited suggestions for names my first thoughts were Fried, Baked, Soup and Barbeque. Hope that doesn't make me sound like a beast. :)
Thanks John! Can't believe how exciting it is to actually own chickens! We are loving it and could watch them for hours, they are so funny. Hahah great name suggestions, we do love names with a little comical value!
Hey guys just a tip, we mix apple cider vinegar and garlic in the chicken's water. It helps keep worms and parasites at bay. We also spray them with a garlic/water mix once a week to keep fleas and ticks away.
Thanks for the tip :) we went and bought apple cider vinegar today but hadn't heard of the garlic, so we will ad that in! Thanks :)
Love the chickens the only concern would be that it's not insulated so winter might be tough on them in that hen house, they are so cute!
Wish the hen house had a window so that on days with bad weather or before you let them out in the morning, they can get some light and watch the world go by. I have several kinds of poultry and they all really enjoy their windows!
Chickens can cope with a Welsh winter. We are not talking Nebraska, here!
@@stephaniewilson3955 I've lived in Wales, I'm just saying winter proof to avoid them suffering from the cold, just straw bales packed around for insulation means get the great chicken coop but they will be protected
they are sooo cute 🙂 we are loving them!! Yes we will make sure to give them extra bedding/insulation in the water on the colder/days/nights etc
If there's 2 things I can predict in advance, 1: you'll be astonished how much poo your sweet little chickens produce, 2: you'll fall in love with them and when you realise how smart they are you'll be even more appalled by factory farming. Thanks for being so normal.
Such a good video (all of them) and such good craftsmanship from you both. Hurry up for the next edition please 🙏 😂
Thanks Ian! Jon is the true craftsman 🙂 I am happy being his assistant/apprentice haha! Excited to show you what we are up to this coming week
Very pleasant couple and a very interesting project, @ 11.00 I suspect that is a cockerel based on the style and size of the tail feathers, best of luck and every success for your future.
Quick tip for cutting noggins. Line 2 pieces of wood on top of each other so the ends are flush, mark your measurement on the top one and set your blade so it just marks the 2nd piece, then you don't have to re measure! On your next cut do the same and so on! Hope it works for you.
Thanks for the tip! Super helpful, will give that a try next time :)
A suggestion for the hens names … name them after Welsh mines like Bryntail, Clogau, Sygun and Minera. A nod to how the land was used in the past. Dave Birmingham
Cheers Dave, pretty great suggestions!
Loving watching your plans come together! The chickens are a great addition! 😊
Thanks Lesley, we are really enjoying our new arrivals ☺
Your carpentry skills are getting better. Lovely job.
Thanks David! Jon is amazing :)
Wish you’d upload a video every week, love keeping up with your guys progress ❤
Thanks Martin 🥰 we'd struggle to do weekly videos around our day jobs/wedding video editing but never say never 😄
Good luck with the chickens. The commercially available wood chip for chickens is bark free. See how you go but you might find that the chips with bark mulch up much more when it gets wetter.
Strimming the grass and cleaning the flagstones....can tell you are new to chooks!😊
the flagstones were from under the coal pile so were black, didn't want the chickens getting it all over them.
Wow, what a dress!!! (in the intro!) John & your dog is following the same B&W colour code too!
I love that the chickens have so much space, and I love and admire your working skills, you work so hard! And still stay so joyful.
The chickens seem really happy with all their space, we'd like to add a few extras later this year
Love chickens, really enjoy watching them and how they work out hierarchy. You dont need a rooster but they really complete a flock and do protect and organise. noisy though. Those deck footings will be ok unless you do something daft like putting a spa bath on it 😂
The neighbours might not like it?
You should name the hens, Tikka, Supreme, Tonight and Kiev 😮
Lovely job. You really have got something to be proud of.well done😊
Thanks so much Stevie 😊😊
Congratulations on reaching 100k subs. Keep em coming 🙂
Thanks so much 🙂
Second video this week with noggins. And so glad you put the deck boards on the correct way. Dai iwan.
Maggie is absolutely gorgeous. That decking was a work of art. Would you consider putting an edge on to cover up the gap from the deck top to the floor … or maybe construct some flower troughs or box hedge troughs to place around the deck to pretty up the edges? The picture of you both standing proudly in front of the tent was lovely. Dave Birmingham
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺
I’m really enjoying watching your journey. 😊👍
Thanks so much Julie 🙂
Job well done! Very impressed with your work. I would ask that you consider putting in a ramp instead of stairs. Making your vision accessible to those that have disabilities will allow you to have greater participation of the greater public. You can share your vision with more. Remember we are all going to get old. Anyway, very pleased to see your videos.
Yes we have a completely accessible glamping tent/deck and toilet already planned for the site so everyone can enjoy 🥰
If you all get hot sunny days there in Wales make sure you put something up to protect that coop from the sun.
The sun will degrade and destroy anything plastic in short order. (We have these large thick plastic totes (like a drawer, but stand alone) and I was using 1 to mix concrete in (until it fell apart, the concrete was really bad for it, and I left it in the sun for a couple months (Feb - Jun), and it's got holes going through it's bottom now. Then I have a second one I'd gotten at the same time that was a bit smaller to act as a water bowl for my cats, and it fell apart 2 months ago and I had to find a different solution for watering my cats.
In the future anything like that will be stored in an area that the sun can't get to to try and prolong what I buy and use.
EDIT -
Chickens need to scratch at the dirt, just be aware that if you need to lock the chickens into their run for a while, them scratching at the concrete can harm their feet.
The nestera coops are made from UV resistant recycled plastic so the sun won't degrade them like that, they come with a 25 year warranty also which is amazing so it'll be interesting to see how the coop holds up to the welsh weather.
That's really good to hear, hope it works out as they advertise. And I'll look forward to seeing more videos about your videos in the future.
Excellent to see progress. Make sure your chicken coup doesn't blow away!
Great job guys. Love the new ladies.😊😊
Brilliant 😊 we love watching your progress. Particularly enjoyed seeing the chooks, Emilie was hilariously distracted by them 😂 Looking forward to the next visit, Sally and Doug xx
Sally, I was so excited! 😂😂😂 xxx
We had one like this, not this exact make but the same material. Just make sure you never leave any food in it overnight, the rats chewed they’re way in very easily overnight.the adjustable vents we had to fill with wire wool as they chewed through them. They chewed up under the floor, so we had to screw 4x2under the floor to slow them down.I personally would never buy another one they are expensive. When I wrote what I thought of them on the reviews it never showed up ,only positive reviews allowed. The trouble is when you have chickens and food the rats will soon be along.
Why not have fun and name after family and friends.
I love seeing everything come together. The Chicken coup. Xx love to Maggie x
The one that crowed “cock a doodle loo” when you were unboxing them was a clue he was the cockerel, you will hear him around sunrise soon.
wow to say your not a joiner you have done good job keep up the great work guys
Jon is amazing 🙂
Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde because they are the Pec-Man
Hi guys excellent video as ever, love the chickens, how about goldie pecker and the twins 😅 keep up the great work Tony ❤️🌹xx
I really have to compliment you both on the amazing way you both speak on your videos. It's always such a pleasure to watch your videos. Your filming is first class, wow. I have watched you from the start of your journey, and as each one arrives I cannot wait to sit and watch what your up to next. Wish it would go on for hours. I'm always sad it ends. But I eagerly wait to see your next one. You are really my no 1 couple, you work so hard and are just so connected. THANK you for letting us watch your lives and share with you your journey to getting your home and business to where you dream of it being, and we get to enjoy it with you ❤❤❤❤❤😊
I couldn’t agree with you more, they really are amazing.
thanks so much Lesley! We really enjoy filming them so that's so we are so pleased you enjoy them 🥰
Lovely job with the base, as well as predictors watch out for Bird Flu !
Good luck with the Glamping
Thanks James & Mary! We were worried about bird flu! Fingers crossed it can stay at bay in the area
👌🏻👍🏻❤🙏🏻 I admire you two so much. You are a inspiration to all watching your chanel. Love and greetings, Sara from South Africa🇿🇦
100 percent that's a Rooster you can tell by the tail feathers.
for our sakes i hope you are wrong. 🤣
Shelly! and Cluck Norris :D
oh I love those names hahah
My son had a little black hen named Phoebe. Such a cute little chicken he would carry around like a cat.
Team work makes the dream work 👏🏼..... Also what lucky hens 😊 great little set up for them, love the coop
That's Matt! Feeling very grateful to Nestera for gifting us a coop and for all of you watching our channel as without it we wouldn't be lucky enough to be sent such lovely products to try! So thank you!
Thanks.🎉
05:30. Awww ... sweet Maggie ... you're not a chicken! 🐣🐥🐤🐓 😂❤😊
Brilliant guys, Excellent job notching out the legs, I've seen professionals not do that, my disappointment is I didn't see joist hangers used, maybe in the edit you didn't show that.
Thanks Chris, hadn't thought of joist hangers, we will look into that as an option for the next decking :) all a learning curve
Don’t forget to treat your birds with red mite powder. To keep them mite free.
This is a lovely documentary. Well done :)
Beautiful little chicks!!!
Looks great ❤
So happy you’re back! 😊
I think ,well I hope I'm speaking for everyone who have watched your journey that I can't wait to be able to head over and stay.
Keep smiling and keep grafting guys 🏴🏴
Thanks Mike! We can't wait!
Loving the pogress 💪💪🤍
Ooh well i think you really need a theme for the names, I'll throw in Merthyr Mardy Minera & Meryn for slightly welsh/mining related as a nod to the local history
Great job guys, love watching your videos......... AND......... Your hens are cool 😊 🏴
Thanks Bonnie! The hens are so funny! We are loving having them!
Another fantasticly uplifting video ❤
Good job both of you. Looks great.
One more great vid keep the great work going
