  • Bonjour à tous.
This week at the chateau, we take a look back at when we bought the crumbling Chateau de Lalacelle. Abandoned for over 40 years, this beautiful monument was in a sad state of disrepair, with crumbling chimneys, broken widows and leaking roof, the chateau did not have must life left in her.
With the start of the restoration in 2021 we look through some of the massive jobs over the two years of owning a abandoned chateau in 20 minutes, the family have achieved so much in this time with beautiful finished rooms.

    About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

@@Themrine2013 To be honest, that place needed to be demolished. I would have stripped out all the wood and sold it or burned it. Then I would have pushed it all over in a day with a big excavator. And carted away all the rubble in a week.
Then in 50 weeks I build a 3 storey modern chateau. In just a year, not 2, I would have a nice modern property, built properly with modern materials.

The determination, love, smiles, encouragement and family. The pain staking details on every single job, just that perfect piece to make it all come together, that hue of paint or stain that changed the entire room or piece. Impressive video. I started a bit late (graduated from my doctorate program at age 30 in 2016 with 170k in school loan debt). Managed to pay off my debt by 2019 and currently have a house and 250k total in investments (combo of profit share, 401k and a brokerage account). I'm not very knowledgeable in investing, so I just have my investing currently in index funds mainly voo, but have been putting a lot into schd the past few months. I dunno if that's the optimal strategy, but psychologically it is very set it and forget it, and prevents me from obsessing over individual stock performance.

This is spectacular!! The careful thought of each room's restoration is clearly evident. The furnishings, decor, colors, fixtures, finishings....perfect! I love how you have respected the chateau's history and kept so much of the original finishings, woodwork etc, opting to restore them to their former glory as they would have been in its heyday, rather than replace them...wallpaper the panels...or paint over them. What you have done is exactly how i envisioned it should look. I cannot even imagine how much work and stress, frustration, blood, sweat and tears you have put into this project....and looking at the size of the place you are nowhere close to being finished. Not many, myself included, have the guts (or finances) to take on such a colossal project. Thank you for preserving such a beautiful piece of history.

If you hadn't produced these videos I would never have believed that such a small family could possibly achieve so much. And, you aren't just repairing the chateau, you are doing a first rate reclamation and setting the stage for an ongoing truthful restoration. You have saved a genuine work of art and in doing so you are preserving architectural history for future generations to see and touch. I think the government of France should assist your restoration as much as possible. What almost gets lost in the magnitude of your accomplishments is that the chateau and the cottage are family homes which are lived in and maintained personally by the family. At times the scale of your project just doesn't seem feasible but the proof is in the fruits of your labour which you captured on video. Bonne année et bonne chance. Merci beaucoup.

Even from the moment you walked into the building I could tell the beauty of it under the neglect.
I get so angry when even in my own town, we are so quick to tear down old, in order to build crappy new. Thank you for giving such a beautiful home another chance to shine.
