I love how authentic your sponsorships are. You can tell that you only promote things you actually care about and use!
Thankyou Poppy 🥰 your comment has made our day! We turn down a lot of sponsorship opportunities that just don't fit with us/our lifestyle or what we believe in, so I'm glad you can see the authenticity in the ones we do choice 🧡
Build yourselves a workbench to save you working off the floor and your knees. It will help so much and prove to be a game changer. Work smarter, not harder 👍
Great idea! 🙂
Horse and cow manure are called hot manure. Has to set at lest a year. Chicken, goat and rabbit can be used right away. Mix your manure in a compost bin with egg shells and kitchen scraps. The garden will love it.
Manure tea is what we call what johns grandpa made. Yes gardens love that also.
Manure tea! 💩🍵 such a good name haha! Thanks for the suggestions and knowledge. Good to know timings for things!
If you try to use chicken manure straight away it will burn everything it comes into contact with! We are poultry farmers and Chicken manure should be put aside for at least 6 months before use.
You Could Have Put Those Timber Holders Into The concrete While It Was Still Workable & Saved Your Self A Load Of Work Guys,
such a good idea! We will try that with the next ones
@@CampOutWest Your Very Welcome. I've Built Many A Timber Frame Build In My Time. Always Wanted To Do What You Guys Are Doing Tho, Just Not Got Around To It Yet. Keep Up The Good Work. As Yoda Would Would Say, "Learn By Doing You Will" 😉 😄
That's what I was thinking as well 😅
I thought the same!! I am so proud to see how you guys are working together in such harmony, it shows the LOVE you have for each other. God Bless 🙏❤️
You’d definitely want a 90° bend or something to anchor them in though. The good thing with the epoxy is it will chemically set in there. The other option is concrete bolts; quick, easy and strong
Born and raised in Pembrokeshire (now living in America) it's marvelous to see a Welsh family doing Welsh things! Looking forward to future episodes. Iechyd Da! ~ Ray
Hi Ray, Jon spent many years as a child living in kilgetty in pembrokeshire, small world. thanks for the support.
With regards to that cement mix. It’s four bags of ballast to a whole bag of cement. The ratios need to be equal. Have a look at the back of the bag of cement, it will give you info on the ratios for different applications. Fair play for having a go yourselves 👍
Thanks Jason, yeah we messed up with the mixes shown on the video in the machine, lucky we posted the video before we carried on with the other 8 piers so we could correct the mistake. So glad we only did two wrong and not 12, that would have sucked big time! I read that for foundation strength concrete to do a 1:8 ratio of cement to ballast which is what we did in the barrow, is that a good idea or are we better just doing 1:4 cement to ballast?
@@CampOutWest stick to 4:1 ballast to cement. That will give plenty of strength
If you put your timber brackets in as you do the piers you will save all the drilling and chem fix and it will be stronger.
Use a bit of threaded rod through the bracket with a washer & nut, once cured you can do a couple of turns on the nut to tighten it up.
If you want it extra secure either bend the rod in the concrete or put some nuts on it in the concrete.
Also worth vibrating the shuttering to get a good pour, hammer drill works well.
Think it’s probably been mentioned but you’ll need a full bag of cement to 4 ballast, better to do half mixes in the machine, 5 bags & the water is a lot on the motor…
Thanks Martin, grateful for the tips! We got the ratios wrong when we moved over the mixer 😅 going to have to do them again!
I sit silently admiring your determination. You will keep on keeping on until you achieve your goals. I love that you are both so sensible and know that you will have a hard slog. May your efforts be rewarded bountifully.
Thank you Stephanie, you live us the most supportive comments each episode, thank you!!! Very grateful ☺ ❤
What a lot of work! You must ache at the end of the day…love how Maggie is there every step of the way 😂 even in one of the boxes, her way of saying ‘notice me’ bless her
She's so cute! We are so lucky she is so loving!
Comfrey or nettles steeped in water for a week makes a good drench for fertilising yr soil. If soil gets too acidic from horse manure then dig in lime
Never put the shovel into the mixer, it could break your hand if it catches, hit the shovel on the outside of the rim of the drum.
Thanks for the tip Anthony! :)
When you plant if you lay it out then you can see where everything is
When she said garlic bed. I pretended I heard garlic bread instead. Brilliant video guys
i wish it was garlic bread 😂 Hopefully we can make hundreds of loafs from these if they grow.
Why not set up your mixer over each form and pour directly into it? It has a nice high base which should save you a lot of work and speed up the process.
Love that Maggie is there for every project. 😂😂 she's so helpful!
She was our little project supervisor 😊
Beware! Chicken waste is HOT and could burn plants if put directly on or underneath tender plants. Chicken and/or horse manure is GREAT for making compost tea. Lots of recipes out there but I can attest to some amazing veggies from a garden "seasoned" with this method.😊❤
We'll defiantly not use the manure when its fresh, i heard of it burning plants from the nitrogen being so strong which is crazy
Been watching your progress from day one and love what your doing. But please never load a mixer like you have. Have you ever seen an arm ripped off as the mixer blades catch the sovel??? . Please learn this by either stopping the mixer or learn to chuck with the spade. keep the video's coming your both doing great.
Hi, thanks for the advise, i've definitely learnt from the comments section and wont put the shovel in the machine again, i need my arms intact, that sounds terrible and i can see now how i could hurt myself doing it, it got caught a few times. My uncle has since told me using three buckets for measuring and loading the mixer is more accurate and safer.
Horse manure is ok if it is really old. Lots of nitrogen
If u haven't already i would prioritise knocking together a couple of big crude compost bins. Looks like u have plenty of weeds and sticks etc to throw in them plus yr food waste
Cheers Kevin, we are putting together one soon, have been sourcing pallets over the past few weeks, need somewhere for the chicken bedding and manure aswell as the garden waste.
Thanks for the nice episode! My mother uses horse manure for everything, especially the roses love it. But it should not be fresh, but stored for at least a year. Otherwise it will harm the plants You two are simply authentic and likeable people. I think it's nice to see a vlog in Wales. This is much closer to my reality than Portugal or Italy. 😊
Thank you ❤So excited to see how the garlic grows! Thanks for the tip on storing too, that's good to know 😊
Hi John & Emily, I enjoyed every moment of this edition , My Dad was a Great Gardener and swore by using Chicken manure, But He'd have a Big Blue plastic Barrel , fill it with water , He would use a carrot sack filled with the chicken manure, a stick pushed through the top to suspend the carrot sack in the barrel , Perfect liquid manure ! He called it his Chicken Chit teabag brewer, Dad's garden produced like crazy , as soon as one crop was finished He'd be feeing the soil and sowing his next crop
Thanks for sharing Jon! What was your dad's favourite thing to grow?! I'm so excited for next spring to see what we can grow in our first full growing season 😊
Good planning and progress. Your choices are done with integrity and long range thinking. You are a pleasure to watch.
Thank you so much, so pleased you are enjoying watching 😊
Get 2 ton or more of ballast delivered, you've plenty of room for it and it's sooo much cheaper than bags.
Thanks! We need to get some more so we will do that. Thanks for the tip :)
I know it´s too late, but there is a handmade mixer that is quite cheap to build out of wood. You basically rock the unit back and forth like a pendulum. If you do a lot more cement work in the future you could build one and double your output and speed.
half a bag of cement per mix is a better ratio, lay the bag flat slice it open across the middle, and pick the bag up in the middle again slice it again and you have two mixes
Thanks Hugh! Yea we realised after uploading this we have done the ones in the mixer the wrong ratio 🤣 so going to have to start again!
Wonderful 🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡
How can I live there 🥰💖✨
Happy living couple
Blessed Day 💞
Thanks 😊
Those corrugated planters are cool
Yay an update 😊
🎉🎉🎉🥳🥳🥳
You two know Frankie off grid in Portugal. How cool. I love the connections between everyone. good on you with the cement and bathroom block project. Cheers. Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Portugal.
Thanks Gina! We are hoping when they are next in Wales we will have our tents ready and they can come and stay with us 🙂
That is so exciting. Cant wait to see that. I am excited to meet all of the Portugal Vloggers eventually. Because of all of you I started my own channel so I can film my property search and share. So thank you. @@CampOutWest
So happy to see an update from you guys in the lovely welsh weather, I’m jealous of your rain. Maggie is so so cute helping you out ❤ glad you’ve got your king tank all set up ☺️ we still use ours everyday! 💧
Nice to see you guys here 😄, hope all is well in Portugal
I'll swap our rain for your sunshine 🤣🙏 Maggie loves helping 🥰 xxx
Oh my.... Maggie is the cuuutest in her cozy doggy-bun! 😍
I am looking forward to see how the garlic harvest will turn out for you next year. 🤤🧄
How have I reached 64 without ever having seen ....or, even heard of the concept of...an OUTDOOR launderette..... !?!?

You should have put some rebar in the pads for strength and your mix should be 4/1 or possibly 5/1. Other than rebar you could have added nylon fibre to give it some strength. The piers should have been deeper as well.
Thanks for the tips, we did the ratios wrong so we are going to have to do them again 😅so will try the rebar!
@@CampOutWest nylon fibre is easier than rebar. Most ready mix concrete companies will sell you a couple of bags to add, it's much cheaper than bar and does the same job.
@@CampOutWest also get yourself a hammer drill and a blunt drill bit, in hammer mode push against the formwork and it vibrates it to get rid of inclusions
That concrete mixer can be very handy in blending soil and compost for your beds, even if you only do the top each planting it makes a big difference
The cement mixer is a back saver. Mixing cement is tough work. It's great to see you giving things a go. This is what my husband and I do with our renovations.
Thanks Daisy, so glad we invested in a mixer! We just realised we've done all the feet to the wrong ratio of concrete, so we are going to have to break them up and start again 😅 so the mixer will help save our bodies haha
What mix ratio did u use. As long as it goes if hard u should be fine. If anything u should have concrete some galvanised threaded bar into them to save the drilling. All be a sds drill is well worth a buy. In ur videos say what u are going to do next that way u can get advice prior in the comments.
Great job guys!! You should tap the side of the forms to get any air bubbles out of the concrete.
Thanks Duncan and thanks for the tip, will give that a go next time 👍😊
@@CampOutWest a hammer or rubber mallet will do it!
It’s great watching you venture taking place. The mixer will pay for itself many times over. I’ve mixed concrete by hand many times and it’s no fun at all. Keep the good work up.
Thanks David! Our arms were so dead after that first day doing it by hand haha! Very excited to we have the mixer!
This is totally awesome, i'm glad you got the cement mixer. It will benefit everything you both do on your property. I can hardly wait to see what is next! Thank you both for sharing your journey! 😊
Thanks so much Rhonda, so pleased you enjoyed! 😊
@@CampOutWest No, thank you both 🙏
How exciting now you can see so much progress from when you both first started! Admire you both for not giving up, have you managed to sort something for the tents yet?
Thanks Georgie! Fingers crossed we can be in our tiny house by Christmas! Very excited for the next few weeks! We have been emailing with the manufacturer and they said at the start of the week they are going to make us 1 replacement out of stronger poles and better canvas for us to try, so fingers crossed they send it and it works! xx
That’s fab! Hopefully it will more suitable! Hopefully you’ll be in for Christmas in your tiny home 🤞🏻 xxx
@@CampOutWest... It's pleasant to know that the Tent Co. responded and are helping on that issue. I'm proud of the efforts you're putting into things. A tip to pouring concrete - position the mixer over each shuttering box, eliminating all the extra back and forth with the wheelbarrow. Even small farming is not easy... It's great you both love what you are doing - as I really enjoy your videos! (CHEERS to both of you)
I haven't subscribed to anything like this on RUclips yet here I am, amazing work and perseverance, something i would love to do especially in the world we live in today. very inspiring and obviously you two bounce excellent off each other and both have the same goals in mind. I'm very impressed
Thank you 🙌
Amazing watched most the videos this afternoon till now lol 2 32 am here in canada ontario lol
😂 we do this all the time when we find new channels we love, glad you found them interesting.
Hi John, best to pour the cement in the mixer. If the shovel catches on the mixer blades you could injure your wrist.
Great effort though , well done guys
Jon has been complaining of a bad wrist actually so I wonder if that's what's caused it? I'll tell him to try it that way next time 😊 thanks!
Standard concrete mix ...one part cement to two parts sand to four parts gravel guys .
We did that in the wheelbarrow and then somehow doubled the ballast when we went to the mixer 😅
@@CampOutWest I thought that may be the case . You are doing a good job and enjoy watching your progress 👍 John
I found your channel and am enjoying a good binge. You are some hard working people. Question- why do you never dump your wheelbarrow? I’ve just noticed you do lots of shovels unloading stuff out of it instead of just doing it in one dump. 😂
Love seeing your progress!
Thanks Jill! ❤
Well done both doing well that Mixer long term will be a great investment for you.
Thanks Gary! We are loving the mixer already!
Love to see the new progress, amazing hard working, see you next video😊
Thank you! Excited to show you what we are up to next week, can't believe we are finally starting work on our tiny house!
i came across you going of grid series 6 hours ago, now ive watched all your episodes and learnt so much! you guys have put in so much work :)
I love your channel, it's so positive and well put together. This week, yet another enjoyable and productive video, thank you for taking the time to put these top quality videos together :)
Thanks so much Pete! We spend so much time filming/editing so it's so kind you to say 😊
Best of luck and good building weather for you!
Thank you 🙂
Another brilliant episode, looking forward to watching you house build starting xx
Thanks Christine! Excited for the next step 🎉
Another great video guys, you are the most hardworking couple. All the work you are doing is amazing 🇦🇺
Cheers Shirley 😊
Strong works guys!!
Thank goodness for the mixer haha!
Great progress forming the concrete pillars. Given that you've never done it before, you seem to have done a brilliant job 👍😀❤❤
Thanks Heidi 🙂 everyday is a school day! Learning so much 🎉
Well done you both.
Thanks so much Colleen! xx
Another lovely video catching up with all you have been up to 😁and an extra treat of episode 2, I'm straight there ❤
Thanks Bev! ❤
Glad you got the mixer. I have the same one and perfectly serviceable.
Please keep the shovel out of the drum. It is easy to get caught up on the mixing bars and drag it out of your hands or worse, drag you around. (Ask me how I know!).
Safer to cut a hole in the cement bag and pour directly into the drum.
Thank you! Jon has been complaining of a bad wrist actually since we used it so I wonder if he did something then! I'll make sure he doesn't do it next time 😊
Watched you lovely two from the beginning you have both worked so hard now you can start to see the results well done ❤
Thanks Mike 😊❤
Can’t wait to see the finish project 🎉
so excited for a indoor shower! 🎉😁
Oh really well done both of you …and Maggie of course!!! Wonderful work it I miss your lovely hats ☺
Thanks Isobel ☺ Hat's will be back, don't worry! It was just very windy 😅
Need more water in the concrete mix. I'd be surprised if you get strength on what you've placed. As people have mentioned 4-to-1 for stone to cement is a good start, but it should be way more viscous flowing out of the mixer.
We got the ratio's completely wrong some how 😂 going to have do them again
I love watching your channel. You both are the very definition of vision and tenacity. That, plus your hard work, is really paying off.
Thanks so much Jeanne! We really feel like we are getting somewhere now 😊 xx
Cool a new video of "Camp Out West" !! been looking forward to a new Episode :)
Thanks so much! We've been really busy with our day jobs but we have 2 weddings left next week and then we have 6 months off to work on the land full time until weddings start again, so we are very excited to have time to solely focus on the land and the build 🥳🎉
You are working so hard, well done guys. x
Thanks Lyndsey! xx 🙂
Really excited for you both what an amazing adventure your on lots of hard work but what a reward when you’re finished love following your channel enjoy 🌞👌
Thanks so much Christina 😊
Great job. Looks like Maggie likes helping with the digging and supervising.😊
Maggie is the BEST helper/Supervisor 🥰
Love your determinaton and drive
Cheers Ray!
Great to see that you are underway with shower block. Looking forward to the next installment. stay safe J.
Thanks J!
Love watching your progress. All very exciting. It’s something I’d love to do but too old now especially in lovely Wales.
Thank you Mark! Really feel like we are progressing now 🙂
great job on the footings
Totally underestimated how long they would take haha! Glad we won't have to do any of these again anytime soon!
I hope you mixed the manure into the soil. Fresh manure is too acid to plant directly into it. Better to mix half bucket manure with half bucket soil and top up your beds. If the top bud of the brussels sprouts is still evident, then they will survive the caterpillar attack. Looking to the future you should investigate a good hedge or screening type plant to block out that adjoining property. Glampers want to look at something attractive and pretty planting will help! You are making such good progress - hard work is being rewarded!!
Thanks Anne, yes I mixed it in really well 😊 we've kept our Brussels sprouts in, it was the purple broccoli we removed, so fingers crossed the Brussel sprouts make a come back! Screening plants are a great idea also it would help keep out the wind, thanks for the suggestion :)
Hi…..thanks for a great update….I do admire your work ethic….great to see things coming together for you both. Best wishes Julie 😊
Thanks so much Julie! Found it hard juggling it around our day jobs but excited for our weddings to slow down after next week so we can have more time to focus on the land 😊
That was a great find.. the manure. Awesome info about the garlic planting. will try this next year.. keep developing, streaming and learning💪
Love how much we learn at each stage! My goals is to plant 52 cloves so I can have a bulb each week to last the year!
Maggie's bed is wonderful! Great work on the concrete work!
She just loves her Cosy Cave! xx
Great progress Maggie looked comfy in her bed ❤
Maggie loves her cosy cave ❤
Hi you two, it's so good to see you start your block! My dog was always clingy and anxious with high winds... he was a rescue dog and had high anxiety levels due to his upbringing before i had him.
What breed was your dog? I bet you gave them a lovely life 🥰 We actually tried to get a rescue dog before Maggie but the charity we went to wouldn't let us because we had never owned a dog before which was a shame, but so lucky we got Maggie as she is just our dream girl!
Really enjoying these videos, such an amazing project. I am looking for a life like this. You are so lucky to have found each other! Would love to know more about how you got together and where the vision came from!
You might want to put some rebar in your concrete to make it hold together better.
Jon put some in the bigger ones (we just didn't film it) but maybe we should add in it the smaller ones too
Thank you for sharing another great video. You two are a couple of the hardest workers I've ever seen, so impressive. Emily, I missed your stylish hat(s), I am a fan of them. I hope you never give up on your dream...be well please.
Thank you❤The hats were just staying safe from the wind haha! They will make a return soon 🙂 thank you for your lovely comment xx
you will love your mixer as i love mine . great for sidewalks and small jobs . i wore mine out after many years and bought another just to have on hand when needed
We love it! Such a good investment and has really saved our arms haha
brilliant work guys 💯
Thanks so much Paul ☺
Wow! Evolution Mitre! Nice!!!
It's about 5 years old 😅 we bought it when we were doing renovations on our old house, it's lasted us well 🥳
If you’re not far from the sea you could collect a few buckets of seaweed. Put it in a water barrel and leave for a while, it’s a great natural feed for the plants over winter. Kelp extract is a fortune in the garden centres!
Oh I love that idea!! We see seaweed on our walks daily! Thanks Marti
@@CampOutWest, you need to check that where you are collecting from is legal. (Just Googled it)
Maggie the supervisor just love her 💗🐾🫶🏻 xx
She loves checking in on each bit haha!
Well done guys ❤👍
thanks Terry ❤
Well done John and Emily.Lovely to see progress - and love the turtle necks and beanies Emily whilst John is still in shorts and t-shirt. Must be a latent Scotsman in there too. Love the way you share your learning from the various comments and I'm sure the garlic will be a great success. Good tip about the acidic nature of the horse manure and limiting the application: some organic material will be really good for the growth of the garlic but not too much! Exciting to see the chassis arriving too. Keep going, love the channel.
Thanks Jim! haha Jon would still be in shorts in the snow! 🤣we are completely opposite when it comes to body temperature!
As someone that has spent most of his working life on his knees....please....build yourself a big heavy workbench, your knees will love you for it in many years time!
oh you both are doing great! 😮
Thanks so much Sue!
Lovely team work
Cheers Paul! Maggie is our team leader 🥳
Love your channel guys, I always do 2 bags to 1 cement much stronger, keep up the good work 💪💪
Thanks William! We did the concrete to the wrong ratio's so are going to have to start again 😅
dont drill. put your bolts INTO the wet cement. save a TON of work.
i was too worried to do that incase i got the measurements wrong, don't really trust my measuring and maths skills so figured drilling and epoxying in the fixings i could have more time to measure and get things accurate before drilling.
Looking good great progress guys. It’s a learning curve just keep learning and try not to make the mistakes twice😳😁❤
thank you! haha thankful we only did 2 of the piers the wrong measurment 🤣
I adore watching your videos of watching you make your dream home, however I absolutely love the Maggie content this week!
Maggie was so cute! It was like she was supervising every step haha
Have been following you guys since you posted the first video and it's soo cool seeing the progress! Just seeing the little poly tunnel behind you as you planted garlic reminded me a bit of an outdoor cinema screen - maybe Camp Out West could hold some really amazing outdoor movie nights one day, you've definitely got the cool setting for it 😄
oh I love that idea Emily!!! We do actually have a projector we sometimes use off our white defender car side haha!
Cant beat some good honest concrete work.
Shame we did the ratio's wrong, going to have to start again haha!
Garden Organic was started over 50 years ago by Lawrence Hills in Essex to experiment with and promote organic growing.
They are a great source of advice and they keep a heritage seed library to retain old seed varieties that were not allowed by the EU or abandonned by commercial agriculture.
Oh thanks for the recommendation Steve, we will look top Lawrence Hills, thank you!
@@CampOutWest check out
Just seen your latest video, great video log.
You reminded me of a gardening trick my father used on our allotment in the sixties. He would but a few shovel fills of manure into a hessian sack, the kind used for potatoes, and he would hang it from a simple frame over the top of an open 45 gallon oil drum The sack hung down in the water which he then used for watering the tomato’s. He would top up the bag of manure every month or so. Just make sure you use that good black stuff we saw in the video.
It gave a good supply of great fertilizer through the summer.
John.
Thanks John, I'm glad you are enjoying watching 😊 I bet your father's allotment was amazing!
You can make some nettle fertiliser if you have nettles nearby. Just fill a bucket or container with nettles add water..cover and in a few weeks you can strain it and you’ll have the most smelliest but fabulous fertiliser for your garden.
Oh love this idea! Thanks so much for sharing 😊
