The best thing I like about being off grid on my 60 acres is that it doesn’t matter if it takes me 3 days or 3 weeks to do something as there is no time restraints and as a retired service technician that is truly a blessing to work at your own pace. Good luck to you all!
I mean there is somewhat because depending on where you live you kind of need to get things done before winter because it can be a bit harder to get food during winter because less animals out and less plants growing but other then that yeah you have a pretty big time limit
That is my dream to once be able to be nearly 100% self sufficient and sustainable. I’d like to wakeup and work at my own pace in my own space. Eat food that I’ve grown and raised. Such a satisfying and rewarding feeling. I am pushing towards it. Aloha👍🏼🙏🏼🤙🏼
This is not a negative comment, just an observation - going off grid is much easier if you have a lot of great tools available. Technology is very helpful. I applaud what you are doing.

I have not missed a single part of your journey. It's so close to the way we started. Keep at it, after a while you will be doing jobs you WANT to do not jobs you HAVE to do. That makes all the difference in the world. I realize the budget is tight and currency is an issue but with Christmas being right around the corner maybe you can sweet talk Santa (or Father Christmas if you prefer) into bringing you a sturdy garden cart. One where the sides are removable Moving your IBC's would have been a breeze once they were balanced on it. You will find it more useful than the wheelbarrow over time. If he won't spring for that, you still need a decent garden rake especially if you plan on planting some crops of your own. It never hurts to ask! Recap videos are hard. A lot of editing and a great deal of time is required. You did a GREAT job with this one!! Keep smiling, keep working and keep making the videos we like to see!
If I can help you with one tip get approximately 12 foot length of rope or cloth and tie it together to make a loop now put it through the pallet on one side of the ibc then use the rope cloth to carry the ibc by putting the rope over your shoulders you’ll find it a lot easier to carry big things as your using your body to do the work not your arms and back. Keep up the good work and get yourselves sorted to temporary sleep in the barn at least you can have a wood fire to warm over the winter months. Waiting for next episode. Xx

Beautiful film. It's not only the Portuguese who shared their farmhouses with animals. The Welsh Longhouse was designed to do exactly that, with the thought that the heat given off by the beasts in one half would help to keep the family warm in the other (that's the theory, I've never actually tested it). Recycling pallets is a great idea, the cost of new wood at builders' merchants is astronomical. You could build yourself a large flat trolley (like a kid's go-cart) to transport heavy things from the road to your homestead. It's amazing how manageable heavy things become once you get some wheels underneath them. I would level the track with a pick, using earth and stones from the high spots to fill in the ruts. The Sprinter will roll it down. Onwards and upwards!

Love the videos and following your progress. When building a wall using wooden studs it works better to build it on the ground and then stand it up and brace it. Repeat until all walls are up. Works great on walls 12 feet or shorter. This will also help to make sure all is square. Great job ya'll

LOL! Love the gradual step up from using 'what we had' to new shiny battery tools I might want to buy. Not knocking good tools. They make a big difference. But I think in time you'll be firing up an excavator to complete a new on ramp for your diy home build project.

Dan Laura to help you out wen moving those big totes around again re-invent the wheel tale scraps make wheel say20 inches in dimeter your choice make an axle out of wood post and then hook one wheel on each end of axle make two axles and then put beam in center so you have a 4 wheel cart. when done it should look like a huge H with wheels. you could either push or pull it. it should roll fine if you make the wheels thick enough.
I put old plastic car mats and brick etc, under floor of my shed, painted with old paint even put varnish and oil to mix, can filter with window screen and large metal ceiling light cover with hole in center to drain good paint

Especially as someone who’s been going to Portugal on and off for the last 30 years (and not to the Algarve) I know how beautiful and peaceful the interior of this country is. Very Cool! The Wife and I are looking at land right now. Of course we wont be exactly homesteading considering were both in our mid 50's. And living in America in our case Texas we want a bit more land,we need forty acres for hunting purposes and just shooting as a hobby. We plan on having a Barndominium built which if you dont know what that is it's one large building with your living area and the shop under one roof. Looking to go mainly solar and possibly wind power. Still want to be hooked up to the grid for those just in case moments that can pop up. And of course we'll have a garden and raise chickens and possibly some goats and a milk cow. Well lease a small section to a rancher for grazing purposes which will give us an ag exemption on our taxes.
You didn't hear this from me ;P but I would use a long lumber/2x4 as a yoke between two people and tie the IBC Totes to the lumber. It'll be a leg lift vs an arm lift. Awesome content!

Pallets are great to repurpose. I've made a twin bay composting system as well. I ended up making a shower out of something far less aesthetic- two IBCs, one flipped on top of the other with a cut out.. not fun doing that solo but they can be moved around slowly with a hand trolley. Looks dry out there, I have to be weary of mould growth where I am in Australia as it's very damp in winter/spring. I have been using a rather expensive 4 man tent for my toilet and storage but the wind destroyed part of it and I don't think it'll last much longer.

You need something on wheels such as a cart, dolly or hand truck to help you to move heavy and bulky things around your property. You can use use planks as temporary "walkways/driveways" to smoothe over rough patches. Keep going.👍
Growing up we recycled everything that neighbors would scrap. Our family home became 80% neighbor scrap lol. They actually would come over and just ask us first if we wanted their scrap before tossing it into the transfer station. We lived off the land farming, hunting, fishing, shrimping, crabbing, going into the jungle and scavenging for wild yam, and other bounties it would provide. Time moved by at a snail's pace and the only stress we had was that from each other's personalities lol. It would all change when we discovered Netflix, cable tv, "convenience". It's been 12 years since moving from the island to the States for work and living the corporate slave life. I have discovered there can be more stupidly stressful things and this video has reminded me of my roots and the important things in life. I simply want to say thank you and it may be time for me to return home and become the ultimate hunter gatherer once again.
I'm old now, I've done this. My heat sings seeing your adventure. I hope you are both happy and enjoying the REAL way to live. My partner did little to help me, years of hard work and took most at at the end. Stick together and be sane.

A brave decision to take on a property like that and I thnk you have made the right decision on not trying to restore too much land, and if needs be you can always purchase some more. Having a well-organised tool shed is a big help. The old barn is similar to the house of my Polish wife's grandparents and how they used to live. What I like about this project in particular is your use of recycled materials.
Looking great so far, I love how the first thing you did was get a large range of tools and a tidy store for them. Will you be living in the van on the property for a long time or building a temporary accommodation before the stone house is completed?

May I suggest a "sedimentation tank" between the down spot and the big tank. A 5 gallon bucket would do. Just have the water go in there 1st and overflow into the water tank. This will keep and debris (bird dropping, stick, bugs)from the roof from contaminating the big tank

Awesome amount of progress you have made in such a short time. Can't wait for the next 3 months' progress. One thing though, you may want to put a black cover over the ibc to stop bacteria/algea growth in the water.
The easiest way to take care of them pallets is to get a hacksaw blade and go between the boards and softer than nails then you can drive the nails out or I guess I should say the remainder of the nails out with another full now uses a bunch

I have pull up bars and calisthenics stuff etc, but your quick easy setup got me wanting to do the same in the garden.. very inspirational video for me and I bet a lot of others.. However! I am curious?? how were you charging all those batteries for the power tools...

Great effort guys! Unfortunately the tarp doesn’t last two minutes in the hot sun and starts to shred. You need a pond liner heavy duty. You learn these things over time. There is such a tool as a pallet breaker don’t know how it works but it might be useful to you. Always cover your water to stop evaporation in that heat you won’t have much left. Best of luck both. Water is like liquid gold in those conditions.

The Wife and I are looking at land right now. Of course we wont be exactly homesteading considering were both in our mid 50's.
And living in America in our case Texas we want a bit more land,we need forty acres for hunting purposes and just shooting as a hobby.
We plan on having a Barndominium built which if you dont know what that is it's one large building with your living area and the shop under one roof.
Looking to go mainly solar and possibly wind power. Still want to be hooked up to the grid for those just in case moments that can pop up.
And of course we'll have a garden and raise chickens and possibly some goats and a milk cow.
Well lease a small section to a rancher for grazing purposes which will give us an ag exemption on our taxes.

You didn't hear this from me ;P but I would use a long lumber/2x4 as a yoke between two people and tie the IBC Totes to the lumber. It'll be a leg lift vs an arm lift. Awesome content!

Pallets are great to repurpose. I've made a twin bay composting system as well. I ended up making a shower out of something far less aesthetic- two IBCs, one flipped on top of the other with a cut out.. not fun doing that solo but they can be moved around slowly with a hand trolley. Looks dry out there, I have to be weary of mould growth where I am in Australia as it's very damp in winter/spring. I have been using a rather expensive 4 man tent for my toilet and storage but the wind destroyed part of it and I don't think it'll last much longer.

You need something on wheels such as a cart, dolly or hand truck to help you to move heavy and bulky things around your property. You can use use planks as temporary "walkways/driveways" to smoothe over rough patches. Keep going.👍

Growing up we recycled everything that neighbors would scrap. Our family home became 80% neighbor scrap lol. They actually would come over and just ask us first if we wanted their scrap before tossing it into the transfer station. We lived off the land farming, hunting, fishing, shrimping, crabbing, going into the jungle and scavenging for wild yam, and other bounties it would provide. Time moved by at a snail's pace and the only stress we had was that from each other's personalities lol. It would all change when we discovered Netflix, cable tv, "convenience". It's been 12 years since moving from the island to the States for work and living the corporate slave life. I have discovered there can be more stupidly stressful things and this video has reminded me of my roots and the important things in life. I simply want to say thank you and it may be time for me to return home and become the ultimate hunter gatherer once again.

A brave decision to take on a property like that and I thnk you have made the right decision on not trying to restore too much land, and if needs be you can always purchase some more. Having a well-organised tool shed is a big help. The old barn is similar to the house of my Polish wife's grandparents and how they used to live. What I like about this project in particular is your use of recycled materials.

May I suggest a "sedimentation tank" between the down spot and the big tank. A 5 gallon bucket would do. Just have the water go in there 1st and overflow into the water tank. This will keep and debris (bird dropping, stick, bugs)from the roof from contaminating the big tank

The easiest way to take care of them pallets is to get a hacksaw blade and go between the boards and softer than nails then you can drive the nails out or I guess I should say the remainder of the nails out with another full now uses a bunch

Great effort guys! Unfortunately the tarp doesn’t last two minutes in the hot sun and starts to shred. You need a pond liner heavy duty. You learn these things over time. There is such a tool as a pallet breaker don’t know how it works but it might be useful to you. Always cover your water to stop evaporation in that heat you won’t have much left. Best of luck both. Water is like liquid gold in those conditions.
