That was definitely a golden age of women's tennis with amazing depth. The level of the matches between the top women back then was so much more compelling than what we see today. Hopefully we can see a new wave of 5-10 women playing at a high level consistently for a few years.
Seles' groundstrokes sound like gunshots coming off her racquet on a carpet surface in a closed arena. I saw her play on carpet several times and the pace of shot was just incredible. I miss the matches on the surface, but it just caused too many ankle injuries. I believe the ATP, WTA, and ITF have all banned carpet.
Moni on fire in this match… hard to believe she lost to Dokic in the next round but that was typical of her performances in the second half of her career just couldn’t keep the top form in every match although I will say I remember the match against Dokic and that was the best I’ve ever seen Dokic serve , normally her serve is a weakness. Monica’s first half of 2002 was so consistent though reaching the semis or better in 7 consecutive tournaments 🎉🎉that’s amazing
not really . Graf hit the ball much harder than Seles ever did . Seles was a FANTASTIC retriever and rarely made errors but hit the ball in a lot. When she hit hard it was when an opening was there. Capriati and Graf were much more powerful even before 93 . Sabatini could have been so much more sucessful if she did not have those long wind up strokes as she was stronger physically than the lot of them.
@tomsd8656 Very possible. Graf’s collection likely would’ve looked different than it does today had Seles not been stabbed, but I think the ones most hurt would’ve been Hingis, ASV, and Pierce. There’s 10 post stabbing slams right there, and Hingis’ 97 Wimbledon is the only one Seles wouldn’t have been favoured over any of the winners.
I've watched a number of Seles matches, even tho I dislike her style of play, but it wasn't till I saw this one that I had a sense of how freakin' HARD she hits the ball! I think part of it is the resonance in that venue. You can really HEAR the force. Does anyone know of any of her opponents who specifically tried the strategy of underspin and keeping the ball very low? It actually seems from this match that she could handle it, but at least in theory, would that be a good strategy?
@@paules3437 Novotna and Navratilova. Novotna had some success against her in her second career using that tactic. But those are the only examples. Hingis used placement to move her. Davenport, the Williams sisters and Pierce used flatter, hard shots to take time away from her, which worked well due to her limited movement in her second career. In her first one she lost very few matches but the player who beat her the most was Navratilova (slice shots + charging the net).
@jujumusique1305 great analysis. If she had been in better shape during her second career, she would have managed to beat those top players more often.
Belgium 🇧🇪, Justine Henin is one of the Greatest Tennis Players in Women's Tennis in the entire History of World Women's Tennis. Russian Women beat Justine Henin just six times at various singles tournaments on their way to the Titles. Elena Dementieva (Amelia Island 2003.); Anastasia Myskina (Leipzig 2003.); Maria Sharapova (US Open 2006. Australian Open 2008.); Nadia Petrova (Berlin 2006.); Dinara Safina (Berlin 2008.). only five (5) different Russian Tennis players have won singles Titles since defeating Justine Henin.
Russian Women have defeated Serena Williams a total of ten (10) times at various singles tournaments en route to the Titles. Maria Sharapova (Wimbledon 2004. WTA tour Championships, Los Angeles 2004.); Vera Zvonareva (Cincinnati 2006.); Elena Dementieva (Kremlin Cup 2007. Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. Sydney 2009. Toronto 2009. Sydney 2010.); Svetlana Kuznetsova (French Open 2009.); Dinara Safina (Berlin 2008.). only five (5) different Russian Tennis players have won singles Titles since defeating Serena Williams. of those tennis players who have ever become number 1 in the WTA rankings. Serena Williams, Russian Tennis Players won the most number of times. as many as ten (10) times en route to the singles Titles.
Russian Tennis Players won the following tennis players (number of times) on their way to singles titles at WTA main tour tournaments: Kim Clijsters, one (1) time. Jennifer Capriati, two (2) times. Steffi Graf, zero (0) times. Lindsay Davenport, seven (7) times. Justine Henin, six (6) times. Serena Williams, ten (10) times. Venus Williams, five (5) times. Martina Hingis, four (4) times. Monica Seles, zero (0) times. and Serena Williams ten (10) times. that is, ten times more ! that means something.
How Monica hits the ball so hard with sharp angle and precise placement in this match is amazing.
Because she's simply Monica! A true anomaly!
Because she is unique none like her
Thank you so much for posting this one. One of Monica’s many wins of her swan song years, 2001 and 2002. She beat all the top player in those years. ❤
Monica Seles that day: just too/so good!
It was wonderful to see Seles approach the net with such success. Her volleying skills are under-appreciated.
Exactly my thoughts as I watched ❤

Seles tenacity and precision from another world. Simply beautiful to watch. TY 4 the posting!
Monica is Queen. There might be an all power game today but none has her angles and ball direction!
Her backhand is the best of all, better than Hingis's. Monica's powerful backhand angles are legendary and not seen anymore in the current generation.
Thanks for posting this! Monica`s style to play tennis was so exciting and a joy to watch.
Thank you.. Remembering those tennis days of these great players!🇨🇦
You are warmly welcome!
My two favorite players of that era. Excellent serving from both. Monica's serves had improved tremendously compared to pre-stabbing.

I always liked the matches between these two.
My two favourite players of all time.

More matches which include Monica pleaseee ... thanks
La Seles era spettacolare...la mia preferita di e per sempre ❤️
Thanks so much for the upload
Great looking back
I love this video and Monica and you, uploader. Love you all ❤❤❤
Seles changed the game forever with her power and her fierceness. Such a shame her career was cut short.

Sadly we will never know how great she would of been, barring the knife attack. She was on track to be the goat, 8 majors as a teen, is a record.
I have never seen Justine Henin so confused... Monica is super top
Without the stabbing Monica Seles would have been very close with Steffi Graf in Slams won, probably even winning more, since she's younger.
wihtout the stabbing, Monica would have been the GOAT!
@zoolalias2232 That's not certain, but for sure she would take a lot of Slams from Steffi.
They would have split the Majors between them. Moni was dominating Graf before ...
@kaialoha Rubbish there was never any period where Seles ‘dominated’ Graf.

the best!!!
unbelievable video with hidden score board .

seles pendulam shots 👌👌👌👌
Talentuose entrambe, ma prima di Seles non avevo visto nessuno picchiare così la palla.
Thanks very much. Could you share the full match please?

For sure she hit the ball harder on her comeback but she did not hit that hard pre stabbing . She was a master of waiting for the right opportunity .
