Can we talk about the thing of beauty that is Henin's one hander! One of the top 5 of all time male or female for me, she got so much value out of it especially for her height.

I also blame Germany's easy-going legal system that let the mentally deranged Steffi fan go with basically a slap on the wrist.
Seles had so many of these crushingly close losses after she came back from her attack. Even being obviously so much less fit than Henin here and she STILL had match points against her and stayed with her in the third set, just shows her hitting ability, no one has come close since with both hands on both sides.
Justine will always be my favorite woman player! Heavy ball striker with power on both wings and her one handed backhand was one of the best of the game. I always thought she was the female Fed, but she is in every way her own player! Really miss her in the game! I know injuries set in but I she retired to young,
Or maybe Roger is the female Henin? 😊 Her backhand here reminds me of Roger’s 2017 backhand: extremely offensive. In my opinion, Henin was more consistent about attacking on her backhand than Roger. There were some years where Roger sliced way too much on his backhand.
Keep in mind Monica Seles was 10 years past her prime, at a stage where she was physically, mentally and emotionally nothing compared to her earlier self, and up against a much younger Henin who would finish the year as World No 1. Monica was simply incredible. She could well have gone on to become the most successful tennis player had she not been stabbed when she was just 19.
agree. this is a high-level match. She is staying with prime Henin and had match point on her. She got tired in the end. So, pre-stabbing seles could beat Henin 03 or Henin 07 no problem. Did not realize Henin was this good in 2003. She moved very good in 2003, might have been her best year.
So agree..Monica played “ok” here and even post stabbing she played the big points better than anyone ..here against Justine she held a match point and I believe served for the match more than once and just played sloppy and mentally bd physically caved just a bit ….her serve also did not look good to me especially the 2nd serve…and she not even close to her best here …..I think us Monica fans love to really comment on just how good she was being only 19 and having 8 slams and she had by 93 figured out how to bear the top five players including Graf … I don’t see any of that changing all the way through to 97-98
I'm not sure that a strong case can be made for seles being the GOAT. She never saw her prime before got stabbed and her competition was better than Serena's. Seles had Graf and Navratilova. Serena had mostly her sister with capriati and clijsters. Seles had at least a few more dominant years before Williams sisters or hingis stops her. Her prime years physically would have been 1995-2000.
Seles was such an incredible ballstriker, with great consistency and superb accuracy, but at this stage of her career her fitness and movement were below par. It catches up with her especially at the end of the match, but she still could compete with the best players in the world, she was that good.
It's amazing to think that Seles was still only 29 here. By today's standards that would be unremarkable but back then it was the twilight of a player's career. It's hard to know how Seles would have got on had she not got injured in 2003. My guess is maybe one more year on tour and eventually winding down physically and mentally.
she really was an amazing ball striker. For someone who strings her racquet at 100 lbs, much tighter than any one on the WTA or ATP ( Sampras strung his at 78 lbs and Monica strung her previous 102 sq inch yonex rq-380 at 83 lb) and in order to get any type of plush trampoline feel you’d have to hit the ball squarely dead center.
She had actually gotten herself pretty fit in 2003. You could see it in her first tournament of the year (which she won) and in Australia before she hurt her ankle. Then her foot problems started. So I would argue her fitness wasn't her problem in 2003, she had gotten herself the most fit she had been in years and she got rid of a lot of the excess weight. But her ankles and feet were failing her and is what led to her retiring that year.
Amazing how flat Seles hit the ball. But it makes sense as she came up before poly strings became the norm on tour. There is something to be said about poly strings ruining the game a bit, in that the game is now mostly about maximum power and spin from the baseline. Back in the 80s and 90s, there was a penalty to hitting with so much power (balls going long) and so players had to use variety, touch and net play to gain an advantage. It's part of why players like Federer, who straddled the old and modern era, are so special in that they have both modern power and old-school variety. It's been nice to see young guys starting to work on their variety again but you can tell it's not natural to them because they didn't grow up doing it.
I remember very well this final, Monica had had so many occasions to win it, she should have never lost it...she seemed tired though getting into this final, not hitting the ball as usual (slower, less power, less pace, not serving strong), but she did what she could and was so close to winning. Gran partidazo. MONICA THE BEST FOREVER.

The first set, Monica was hitting nearly every ball deep and forcing Henin side to side and behind the baseline. Then, in the second, Seles started to get tired. He in was tough to put away in those years. Even for Monica.
2 of my all time favourites.. offcourse after Serena;)
When you roar ed too muchh , your power went down so quickly !
Henin's strings sound like strung them very loosely.
I thought it was of higher quality, Monica missing a lot and not enough powerful at all especially with the forehand 😭
It was incredibly high quality. A classic match
I see what you mean as we know Seles can hit harder ( especially the forehand) but it was a great battle and the old Seles came out in tiny bits in this match but not enough to pull off a win against the hottest player in 2003
@@bryguy0111 just shows sadly imagine if she was at her best she’d have still been winning slams then… a very different history book would have been in place
I had no idea Seles was this good. She doesn't give an inch.
Leaving aside the numbers, I think that Monica is the greatest tennis player ever.
lol..nope
@@rainyd4293 Well, people often forget that the attack happened when she was only 20 years old and the time she had already won 8 grand slam titles. She inspired generations of players to come and those who played against her often said she was the best match player they had ever seen. I Hamburg '93 hadn't happened, she probably would have won 20 slams or more.
Yeah if we're talking about just off of pure talent, absolutely!
@@milvao3400 She was only 19 years old when stabbed, but yes! She was definitely going to be the one to beat for the foreseeable future.
@@Ricky-mo6mv think about it... if Coco had won 8 GS titles at this point.... in her short carreer before being stabbed Monica had won more GS than Venus, Henin. Sharapova who had much longer carreers. That's amazing and often forgotten
Seles leads 6-4,3-1 . She has a match ball at 6-4,5-4. She serves for the match at 6-4, 6-7(4),5-4
Yup… one of many close matches she lost in her second career unfortunately.
Pound for pound, smallish Henen Ardenne best ever womens player, 1 or 2 handed backhand. Robert at 67.
Hening amazing
We must not forget that Seles still suffered from a minor stab wound which she received only 10 years before.
Seles definitely started the grunting craze in womens tennis
Today it would not be considered loud
@@suealder3551 Yes it would be considered loud. Watch a match with her against Dragomir in 2000 and Mauresmo the same year she literally was screaming and it was not just one grunt it was like a double scream. It was literally echoing around RG , i was at the match for the end of it against Mauresmo which Seles won. She was 10 times louder after her comeback . Yes she was a great player but that noise was not necessary and that goes for anyone else that screams like that
Man, i was always so annoyed Seles couldnt pull through and win these matches. Mostly due too being weaker on the defense i guess
Henin such a great, her idol is Steffi Graf
0:25
ONE WOULD ALSO PONDER IF NOT FOR THE STABBING........WHAT SELES COULD ACHIEED......MAY BE SOMETHING SERENA CANNOT HOPE TO MATCH.
Its real fight
A lot of Mistakes by seles...great game
A non-fat mentally fit Seles would have won in 2 sets.
Haha
seles 30 vs henin 21 yrs
Henin: !!!
Seles: z-z-z-z
This match ended Monica's career.
No what ended her carrer was a german fanatic trowing and stabing her with the knife..SO MUCH ABOUT GENTLEMENS POSH SPORT.....
Seles was far better than Graf and would have won majority of the Slams that she won if she was not brutally cheated out of it.
Seles was very noisy
She was relatively quiet here compared to other matches.
Fitness was a big issue with Seles since her return. You can see how superior a hitter she is but got tired towards the end that damn foot injury ruined things more
This is the year when Henin went all in with her doping. Hats off to her Spanish coach.
HENIN MUST ALSO MUST BE ONLY WOMEN IN THE TOP ..PAST 10 YEARS WHO NOT GRUNT ON COURT.................HAHAHAHA
More and more excuses coming.....😂😂😂😂😂😂
Diese Schreikuh zum Kotzen
What a class remark 👏
big monica couldn't do it and even without the stabbing she would never have made it because she doesnt have the skills!
1992 Monica would have demolished that cheater cheater pumpkin eater.
Seles had a loss to all of 15 year old Capriati, Sanchez Vicario, Sabatini, and a 36 year old Navratilova in 92. A loss to all of those I mentioned and another near loss to all but Capriati, who she only played twice that year, too. Henin far better than all those players I just mentioned.
Justine Henin + Martina Hingis = Iga Swiatek.
Uhhh no.
If Seles hadn't had that attempted murder mishap against her, believe me, she would have broken records in all the WTA tournaments, as all of this favored that stupid Graff.
