Incredible match! Monica looked like the more aggressive player, trying to dominate from the start, running Justine from side to side, coming to the net often, fighting for every point. But Justine's anticipation and skill at the net, court coverage and speed, powerful serve, shot variety and mental toughness - all so very impressive, especially since she was barely 20 and facing a former champion. Allez, Juju!
Seles was never intimidating on grass and at this stage of her career, only a reliable quarter finalist , but it is still fun to watch her play a competitive match. She won the first four encounters with Henin, then Henin won their next three.
How good was Henin’s backhand?! Wow. Travesty that the single handed backhand has been coached out of the women’s game and swapped for the dull, attritional double-hander. Hope we see the likes of Henin and Mauresmo again!
Such a painful match. Mon should have won this but she played terribly on the important points. 2 break points to get to a tie break in the first and that set point she lost, don’t get me started. Up 4-1 in the second. Mess 🙄
@@grantgoffin4774but Seles had beaten Venus that year in the Quarters of the Australian Open so had she pulled this out you never know. This turned out to be her last full year on the tour
@@jl3322 LOL Australian Open is not grass. Venus's best surface and by far Seles's worst. Seles was never in a trillion years beating Venus on grass, especialy at this stage of her career. Henin in fact was probably more likely to (which is still close to 0% chance as the very lopsided Henin-Venus semi showed).
I guess henin learned her lesson from the 2001 Australia open fourth round where she was leading and choked it away. She should’ve won that match especially she was up in both the second set and the third set.
@@dicersbay8230 It's the truth. It's frustrating to watch matches that are super close despite Seles being completely unfit. If she were not late on every ball she would have won most of them. That stabbing incident completely derailed her career, ,dedication, mental approach, depression, etc.
Justine out of her "prime"? Seles might have been on the downward curve and that was a Wimbledon QF so both were playing great tennis, to reach that stage. Justine was just getting started...
@@Logans3Run I figured to anyone who followed tennis it was common knowledge Henin's prime was 2003-2007. 2002 was a worse year for her than 2001. She lost 1st round of the French (her best surface) to Kapros, 4th round of the US Open to Hantuchova who she would own with ease in her prime years, was still getting slapped around super easily by the Williams, Capriati, and Clijsters at this point, except sometimes on clay. Yes Justine was out of her prime, so was Monica mind you.
@@grantgoffin4774 Will have to disagree. Someone being out of their "Prime", suggests and indicates, that he or she is on a downward spiral, heading towards retirement. That certainly wasn't in Justines case. Cheers.
@@Logans3Run IMO that insinuates past their prime, which I agree Henin was not. Henin was before her prime. I don't see out of your prime as needing to be your heading towards retirement. Just for an example would you say Navratilova in 74-77 was in her prime since she was on the ascent when she was losing to Betty Stove at Wimbledon or Janet Newburry at the US Open. Since she obviously wouldn't have been on the way down or heading to retirement, but I would be hard pressed to call that her prime. I see your point, I just don't agree.

Thanks JO for this one in good quality and with score. Henin was always a bit underestimated on grass, but she could play top level on this surface.
Thanks JO, you remembered to upload my faves after SERENA &VENUS. As always, u still upload the best.
Monica, simply the best ever
Man I Miss Monica So Bad

First time to watch this match, thamks very much.

Can someone post the Venus an henin match 2002 Wimbledon semifinal

Justine had a most beautiful backhand....

This match was kind of irrelevant as the winner was always getting smoked by Venus next round anyway.

One handed v Four handed players.
If Monica was just a little fitter she would have won so many matches that she lost.
You say literally the same thing on every video. I am convinced you aren't a person, just a bot.

Two great players, both out of their primes, and on their worst surface by far. Good match.

Seles always fixing her tennis strings after every point.
This was Monica's better sustained levels on grass
Seles: SO ANNOYING: Uh UHHHHHHH! every damn ball.
She was a champion, but Seles must be one the most ungraceful and annoying players of all time. Absolutely painful to watch...

Peak Seles was the best. No doubt about it.
Seles never got to a peak . The early 90s apart from Graf were full of crap players .
