Those crazy angles and two hands all over the place. Monica reinvented the game in a way that no other had done before or since. That SF with Capriati changed women's tennis forever. It always makes me happy to watch the old Seles matches, but a little sad as well because of the lost potential.
Monica was my all time favourite to watch in the women's game. Nobody I have seen since Monica plays with the same fierce intensity and heart than Monica Seles. She had won 7 or8 majors by the age of 19. If she would not have been stabbed, she likely could hold the record for most titles won, but that damaged her more psychologically than physically.
Steffi could have won about 35 slams if it weren't A) for the 1990-92 Graf Blackmail Scandal B) for her 1997 reconstructive knee surgery. Sadly woulda-shoulda-coulda doesn't count in sports or life in general. Even for losers.
monica is the pioneer of the power game we see today in the womens game. sure, chrissie and a few others played baseline games with two handers but they were mostly counterpunchers relying more on consistency. and steffi had a huge forehand but her backhand was mostly just slicing over and over. but monica was the first baseliner who went aggressively after every ball off both sides on every single point. she would never give you a break. and she was SO mentally tough at her peak, the bigger the point, the bigger the shot she went for, she played with no fear. so tragic what that man took away from her and that the tennis world never got to see how truly great she could’ve been.
Monica, almost surely the greatest of all time. The most grit, the sheer will to win, the relentless artillery with heavy double-handed shots, the absence of fear. Fights for every point. Doesn't choke. I would say the biggest talent female tennis ever saw.
Seles is 15-49 win/loss against Graf, Hingis, Davenport, Williams sisters. Never won Wimbledon, was destroyed in her only final there. Was mentally not the strongest. Maybe among the top 10 of the open era, nothing more.

While Monica's determination, power, and killer instinct were indeed all phenomenal, other aspects of her game that I thought she didn't get enough credit for were her balance, court positioning, and anticipation. Many tennis fans often go on about how Martina Hingis had incredible anticipation. And deservedly so. But I think Seles' anticipation was right up there with Hingis'. Another thing about Seles that I greatly admired was how well she read the ball. She almost always reacted to it as soon as it was off of her opponent's racket.
@@criotermic That strength of hers was very key because she wasn't the greatest mover. But with her superb anticipation, court positioning, and ability to read the ball extremely well (combined with her super-long arms), it often seemed like she would get to most shots anyways.

Seles was an absolutely phenomenal player. Still to this day no one in the Open Era has won as much and as fast as she did, from the moment she turned professional until her 20th birthday. Even after all of this time since Monica retired, the only person that has been able to pass Seles' singles Grand Slam count of 9 is Serena Williams. It's hard not to imagine what her record would have looked like in the end if the stabbing hadn't occurred in 1993. One thing is for certain, we were all robbed of a rivalry with Graf that could have been similar to Evert and Navratilova.
What many people forget is that nothing is certain in sports. After WW2 there were 7 other cases when a player won 7-9 slams in a 3-year period (Seles won 8). Those players won only 2.4 slams on average in the following 3 years. And in Monica's case that doesn't even factor in that the GOAT, Steffi Graf, regained her 1988/89 Golden Slam form again in the mid-90s.
People who like beautiful tennis never warmed to her because of her unaesthetic game. And after the stabbing she displayed some problems with the truth (lies about Steffi were really nasty!). Still I like her more than Hingis, Serena or Osaka (which isn't saying much, though).
Graf came in and beat Naverlatova, who was almost un-beatable at that time. Seles came in and destroyed Graf. Greatest player in woman's tennis of all time. She would routinely beat the Williams sisters. To much power, and her shot placement was unbelievable. She ran every body from one side of the court to the other. Would have won more grand slams than any body.

She faced serious injuries and years of mental problems including PTSD, depression, and eating disorders. She lost her number 1 spot and her ranking plummetted because the rest of the players selfishly refused to freeze her ranking in respect to the new number 1. It’s always so annoying when some bozo shouts “Out!” on a line call like Point #2. All it can do is distract the players, it’s not going to change the outcome- just be quiet until the point is over. Like if you agree.
One of the greatest player of all time whose 9 grand slum within 7 years is more than 24 grand slum in whole life.
Steffi is the greatest.
4 slams within 1 year.
Still sad for what happens to her.
This was nice watching - with the sound off...
Ela tinha dois back hands
Poche chiacchiere, la tennista più forte di sempre (e qui mancano anche le giocate migliori)...
Those were all very routine points for Monica.
She transformed women’s tennis
Monica was the geometry master going double-fisted from both sides. The shame of it all is that the maniac with the knife ultimately accomplished what he had set out to do. Love Monica and as a fan feel robbed of what may have been. Oh well. There's always '91 US Open final Monica playing bra-less against Martina...hmmm
So sayang... she could have won more grandslams........
True. They killed a young girl's dream. It's real criminal
The music though 😣
I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT IF IT WASN'T FOR THE HORRIFIC STABBING IN GERMANY BY A GRAF FAN, MRS. SELES WOULD HAVE WON 25-30 GRAND SLAMS. SHE HAD 8 AT 17 YEARS OLD. EVERT, NAVRATILOVA, GRAF, BOTH WILLIAMS ETC. NEVER ACCOMPLISHED THAT. MRS. SELES WAS WINNING 3 GRAND SLAMS PER YEAR. AMAZING.
You silly liar.
Seles had only 4 slams at age 17.
Which 16 slams would your heartthrob have according to your wet dreams, girl?
Marcelo Rios, Nalbandian, Coria, Gaudio nexts please!

I think Iga has taken a lot from her backhand technique! It’s the first player to initiate a similar forehand and backhand technique!
Tennis really is ladies sports
Guys drop balls
M seles wearing Korean flag
So.much speed power plus corner shot
Virus vs seles love to see
10 ➡1 , 9➡2 .......
Seles was a killer before the attack. She could blow eveyone of the court.
Not Steffi.
Even when Seles was #1 pre-stabbing she usually lost to Steffi.
She started to early in Life with 9 her whole Life was Tennis 😢😢others start later,it must been very hard for a 12 Year’s old to live in a strange Country allone😲🤷♀️🤷♀️😢😢
