I think the belief drained even further when she ended up with no majors in 2000 despite being in terrific form from about Miami onwards. It’s unfortunate for her that this was also Venus’s peak year on fast courts. I don’t think any other player would have beaten Hingis at Wimbledon or the US Open that year. Maybe Lindsay.
Liked Monicas hair and also the outfit in 2002. Especially this one suits her really well (unlike the very unflattering white and black one in 1998). Although the match was fantastic, Monica's points that she lost at 9:11, 9:53 or 10:48 are typical of her after the stabbing. She doesn't even make an attempt to go for it. It's unfortunate that she wasn't in better physical shape. Despite everything, I will always be amazed by her mental strength!
It was pretty much the last part of her career. For the rest of the year she was plagued by injuries, had to skip both the French and Wimbledon, and then played the US Open without any practice. It´s actually a shame, because in her early 2002 form she would have been a serious contender for many more Grand Slam titles.
@fundhund62 she won't have won anything 2002 serena who was serving her bagels before her injury drama and in 2003 henin clijsters would've owned her like they owned her in 2006. She was finished as slam winner by 1999

@@gopies1456 To be fair, Hingis was very subpar in the latter half of 2002 after coming back from ankle surgery, and she went into her first retirement after that Seles match.
Not sure of that.. Hingis is a brilliant player only lacking that power, explosives.. Monica recovered but was just not in shape and is getting worse...no doubt she is the greatest.
Seles was going through injury problems and worst of all her father's slow death of cancer at the time. Graf was injured. The rest of the field was weak. Pretty sure Hingis gets there around then regardless.
A real cheater would use something better than coke, weed or crack. HIngis was just a rebel, enjoying recreational drugs by then, and did not read up the banned substances well enough. Someone purposely trying to cheat would use better stuff than that garbage.
El período en el que Hingis dominó fue peor que el reinado de Seles y Graf. Martina no hubiera tenido chances contra la Seles de Aus Open 93 o Graf del Golden slam 88
That indoor carpet is wicked
When people say Hingis was not tough mentally…this was a few weeks after her heartbreaking loss against Capriati in the final of the AO!
After losing to graf in ‘99 she never looked like she believed she could win a slam tho

Seles was unfit and slow on every ball. It has nothing to do with mental toughness. A fit Seles would have won 6-4, 6-3.
So true! Though that loss still hurts :(
@@Ineddiblehulkagree. She reached 4 more finals and lost them all and lost 4 times in semifinals in that same period of time.
Seles is one of the most gracious champions of all time.
Incredible match! So much fun to watch them play!
Great level of play from Monica. These two played very well against each other here and and at the Australian Open the same year. Very tight match.
Wow Martina Hingis plays and looks great
If Monica had maintained good fitness in her second career, Hingis wouldn’t have bothered her nearly as much.
Seles ruled in this match and still could not win it.

Great Match, Rare!
at begining of 2002 is Hingis's last peak.

the sound of the carpet court is so cool!! you can pretty much hear the wood under the carpet.
Intelligent Hingis ! My dearest player ! 🌹🌹💚❤️
Monica Seles una grande
Have you got Hingis Dokic US Open 2001 4th Round
So good!!
Monica should have won both this and the AO SF, she was better then Hingis in that period
Shes not in shape.
PERIOD! I was heartbroken over that AO match. But Monica had some beatdowns at the hands of Hingis so I was glad their matches were close at least.

If she was losing all their matches as you say, how was she the better player in that period. That makes no sense.
My fvrt Martina ❤
Bellissima la Hingis 😍😍
Martinahingis is fantastic player and so beautiful 😍 xxxxxx ♥
Had Seles not been Stabbed Hingis wouldn't reach the #1 ranking
Not sure of that.. Hingis is a brilliant player only lacking that power, explosives.. Monica recovered but was just not in shape and is getting worse...no doubt she is the greatest.
Highly doubt that.
Hingis simply exploited the inherent weakness in Monica´s game, which was her lack of mobility. The stabbing had nothing to do with this.
Seles was going through injury problems and worst of all her father's slow death of cancer at the time. Graf was injured. The rest of the field was weak. Pretty sure Hingis gets there around then regardless.
Let us stop kidding ourselves with hypotheticals
Hingis was a drug taker and it makes you wonder how often she cheated during these matches.
During these matches may be may be not, I don't know you don't know we don't know, perhaps you can move on ?
Hingis was not a cheater
Hingis was drug taker.. Graf have Parche… only Seles was angel
How stupid
Seles was weaker than Graf, Hingis…

@@rolandgreen7484 Exactly!
Seles wasn’t fit enough. Hingis knew she could outlast her. If Seles had been fitter, their head to head would have been overwhelmingly in her favour.
Hingis has some very lopsided two set wins too. It is not like all her wins were tough 3 setters.
