Monica Seles fought off a match point in the second set and capitalized on Lindsay Davenport's collapse to win the Acura Classic, her first title that year. Monica had lost in four other WTA Tour finals that year and was without a victory on tour since winning in Tokyo last September. ''I got close a couple times this year and finally pulled it off in a close match,'' she said. ''It feels great...

Martina Hingis vs. Sandrine Testud Canadian Open 1998 QF
Amanda had NO weapons. She would rely on her opponents mistakes. Not my favourite sort of player. Some players simply wouldn’t tolerate her pushing. Her record against Martina Hingis is abysmal. Hingis would just rally all day long, make few mistakes, and had the ability to suddenly increase the pace and go on the attack. Problem solved. When she became bored or fed up with playing a tennis ball machine it was game over for Amanda. Steffi occasionally would lose patience. Steffi didn’t have a lot of patience to begin with. This was well known. She’s an all out attack player. If you make her even less patient, by including an injury for example, then Steffi got irritated. In 1997 when Amanda got her wins, Steffi was injured and didn’t want a long gruelling match against a rabbit. Beat her with the forehand, and if that didn’t work, Steffi lost. In other years without injury, I think she would keep her cool. Sometimes just enough to win. A loss in the 1995 Canadian to Amanda and a tricky one a few weeks later at the US Open, proved that Coetzer was an irritating match up for Steffi. And to give credit to Amanda, injury or no injury for Graf, she pushed Steffi further and harder than a lot of the other players.
Those groundstrokes are unmatched, plus the two handed bazookas and angles. Monica forever!
Super incredible tennis here. Love Monica. If the incident in Germany had never occurred, she might have been the greatest of all time. But, having said that, her grunting should have been stopped the moment it started.
Seles was far from her best during FO 96 but was still better than 99% of the players on clay. Sawamatsu didn’t have anything to really hurt her. Great first set by the Japanese player though
One of four tournaments where Seles killed everyone but couldn’t prevail vs Hingis 😅
very exhausting match for both of them
The screaming from Seles is horrendous. She was quieter in her earler years. This is just deliberate hinderance. Yes she is a great player but this is horrific.
I had heart attacks watching this back at the day
Me too. I remember turning the tv on at the end of the first set.
That Naoki girl’s game was weak afff
Seles at her loudest
WOW Schwartz played AMAZING! What a great second set was, I miss this quality.
❤❤
One of Seles last matches…
Not quite. She only retired about 8 months later. She had injury problems though in the second half of 2002 and only played the majors and the YEC in that period.
This wasn't a tennis match. It was a battle of who can grunt and scream the loudest. Seles grunted the loudest and so she won the match in the end.
My two favourite players, by far. Monica and Lindsay❤
Monica Seles, one and only!!!!
Barbara has a won over williams in RG so not surprised went to 3 sets. Third round against korea player is a surprise.
I was nervous as a feral cat when this aired live!
Barbara beat Monica earlier that year in Fed Cup by 76(7) 62. In the three matches they played together, Barbara always made things difficult for Seles. Well fought by Monica Thanks JTC!
Barbara won a set from Steffi at the 99 Aussie Open. She was dangerous. And her grunting was even louder than Monica's.
Y le ganó a Venus en RG 99
Hardly louder, Seles was even screaming on dropshots and slices , this is one of the worst i have ever heard even compared to Sharapova
I feel like it took until the 2000’s for Mary to work on her quickness and footwork. Watching these highlights is a bit jarring.
🎉😅
Graf winning RG almost as many times as Wimbledon in kind of odd, her game is so perfect for grass courts and much more vulnerable on clay. Always a joy to watch though
Interesting match, thanks for the upload. All german matches on the pro tour were rare for graf, even against Huber she only met her 10 times in the pro ranks and glass only this time. Entertaining highlights, Grafs forehand and 1st serve worked well after the long lay off, but her slice backhand let her down in this match. Usually that shot was rock solid and the forehand was the risky shot but here it was different Im happy graf went on to try her injury riddled comeback even though she suffered 21 defeats in three years (97 to 99) when in her prime she would only lose 2 or max 3 matches a year, but she showed on a good day she could still beat anyone out there.
The more I watch Sania's highlights the more I appreciate her forehand Such smooth simple, almost nonchalant motion Yet so much power It's sneaky and shocking the same
Did my Queen fall and still win the point. Queen V was on point!!
Great win for novotna, fascinating to see how styles shape match ups. Thanks for the upload
Gracias Steffi!!😍🙌🏽
Her german shepherd is so cute!
I saw this match back then on German TV. Steffi was badly mocked by the commentator and was - perhaps for the first time - called Stephanie Graf. The presenter just could not accept a weaker performance from her.
Monica reached the final of the last 10 Slams she entered before - till that day... the beginning of the end. Just aged 22... :(((
Interestingly, a lot of players on the WTA back then seemed to peak in their late teens / early 20s. So different now.
Monica actually looked in decent shape here compared to the following year but she didn't play any warm ups due to the shoulder injury after Australia and seemed to have lost some confidence on the putaway balls, which was so apparent in the wimbledon horror v studenikova and the 96 US Open final as well. Once they got in long rallies here Jana was able to weave her web with her incredible movement and touch
This match was a combination of Novotna playing fantastic, Seles lacking sting and super hot temperatures making the court very fast.
Jana just made Monica play uncomfortable shots , she also made Monica run a lot using drop shots and angles before the stabbing and us open 95 Monica was fit enough to deal with this and moved better, , here and in the next few losses to Jana she wasn’t in great shape so it just made it harder to retrieve Janas difficult shots . The way to play Jana was to come forward and take the net away from her she wasn’t great at passing shots , she had a terrible record against Navratilova and Graf learnt to do this against her in their later matches,Monica does this somewhat in the 92 slims meeting and watch how aggressive Monica was against Jana in the 91 Essen match she just hits through janas tricky shots .
When Steffi had a date with a Date🙂
Can’t bear to watch it, the end of dream comeback and the actual start to the second career 😢
IMO, Jana really knew how to expose Monica's few weaknesses which were 1) she had some extreme forehand grips which made it challenging for her to get underneath the ball if you hit heavy underspin to that side 2) she did not move up and down the court as well as she did side to side 3) if you hit short and angled shots to her forehand, she had a tendency to reach for the ball instead of moving all the way up to it. With her big serve, sometimes big forehand, heavy slice backhand, and superb movement, Jana was amazing at getting Monica out of position on the backhand side of the court and then hitting a low angled shot to her forehand. These weaknesses were even more apparent after the stabbing when Monica's fitness became suspect.
It's interesting that Jana had some of her best results against Monica on clay. I think the clay helped her slice really bite, took the sting off Monica's shots and allowed Jana to manoeuvre Monica around more. I remember Sue Barker once said that in the old days, Jana would have been described as a "spoiler" - a player who gives you exactly what you don't want and "spoils" your game. Jana did that very well against Monica, playing to Monica's weaknesses that you describe. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Jana had converted that match point she had against Gaby in their 1991 French Open quarter final and then played Monica in the semi final.
@@zeddeka I honestly think Jana would have done better against Seles than Sabatini would have in at the 1991 French Open (although I'm not necessarily saying that she would have won that match). Even though Sabatini was the in-form player that clay court season, the matchups are very different between Novotna-Seles than Sabatini-Seles. As you said, Novotna was a master at making Seles uncomfortable and giving her the types of shorts that she didn't like.
Monica's greatest strength as a player was how uncannily early she could take the ball. Allowed her to rush her opponents and play extreme, point-ending angles. Needless to say that generally made her unstoppable on clay, where the high bounce + width augments that style. On the flipside though that means she'll have more trouble gaining control of the point if the balls aren't getting enough height for her to step inside and take on the bounce (she hit plenty hard, but she couldn't self-generate maximum power from any position and off of any ball like some of the players who followed her or Graf on the FH side even), hence why Novotna's slice (in conjunction with her other tactics) could trouble her as they did here.
@@thb1091 Very good point!
@@gk891yeah, Gaby just didn't show up for that match after it got to 4-4 and there was a rain delay. Peaking way too soon for the 91 French Open I think. Playing too much over the spring
Hinges took her chance to win Wimbledon ,at the right moment .few never do it was that period of graf coming to the end and the start of the Williams sisters dominance
What a great match, probably the best performance from Appelmans, what a terrific comeback from Steffi in the 2nd set too!
The umpire miscounted in the 3rd set tie-break. It was 2:2 before the crowd started whistling, cause they thought it was 3:2 for Fernandez. They thought so because a point beforehand was replayed as a ball from Fernandez was given out, but the umpire overruled it and played a let (Monica easily got to that ball). The umpire got influenced by the crowd`s complaining and all of a sudden he counted a 3:2 for no reason. It was a miscount, not a penalty. Altogether one of the few occasions in 89 when the crowd was not on Monica`s side. She got bad press after her match vs. Schultz cause she hit a shot supposingly underneath the nettape, through the net. The umpire decided netcord, according to the newspaper, and all the spectators and the opponent saw, that the ball actually was going through the net, not over it. Still the point went to Monica.
How can you not admire Steffi’s amazing physique? She kept the femininity, while looking super athletic, strong, lean, and defined. I’ve never seen anything like it. Not before or since.
Totally agree. Her physique is so balanced
Appelmans seemed to be reading Graf’s shots super well here. If I had a dime every time Appelmans hit a wide slice serve in ad side and Steffi’s slice return went right down the middle! Clearly Graf struggling with several things here, match play being one of the main things…
I think appelmans was a natural born righty.
Applemans was such an underrated player
Appelmans ended up losing to Schnyder in straight sets in the next round.
Battle of the lefties!
I totally forgot this match happened. Thanks for posting.
Those were difficult times for Steffi coming back from injuries and trying to find competitive pace.
She had trouble with lefties this year.
Sure did… Patty Schnyder in US Open same year in 3rd or 4th round, same lefty style.
@@DM-qe1dr I can understand Graf's loss to Schnyder. Schnyder was like a wizard on the court who played with some extreme topspin which is a type of game that Steffi hated. I think her loss to Appelmans were very demoralizing though as she often never had trouble with her in the past.
@@gk891she also had wrist surgery right after the loss against PS & was hiding her hand at the post match press conference
@@jayflo_g For sure, I'm aware of it. But with the way Patty played on that day, I think it might not have mattered at all. I can see Schnyder potentially winning that match anyways. Maybe not at the same score but I can see her troubling Steffi greatly.
I love Jana, my fav net player and she could also win points from the baseline. She was fit enough to win against Steffi and Monica. Always great matches between her and Monica. I miss net players though Carlito's is kind of bringing it back a bit.
I remember watching this match live on TV it was a great match, I thought Seles was gonna loose, such an amazing fighter...
