In a way an even bigger choke than 93 wimbledon or 92 year ends v seles because she was playing even better here - her slice was a wall. could just see her berating herself a little too much after an error at 4-1 in the third. then started to either push or overpress a little, hingis hits some outrageous backhands. Novotna would have lost to Davenport probably though, never beat her, although closest match at US open the year before.

As good as Monica played in Rome that year in 93 she moved so much faster and could hit out harder easily as a result of her better movement the serve was much better here

Hingis ended up with a much better record against Pierce than some of the other big hitters. I think it was partly because of Pierce's relatively slow movement compared with, say, the Williams sisters or Capriati, but also I think because Mary really took time to find her game. It was usually there from the first point, or she'd really have to play through some horrible tennis to find it. Hingis I think had so many ways to make Pierce struggle to find her A game, throwing her off, making her feel uncomfortable on the ball.

Glad Steffi whooped her butt in that second set. That first set should not have been 6-3 Steffi took her foot off the gas pedal in that set. Amy played a decent game but was over hitting spraying the ball and in my opinion not moving well.

This girl's game seems so restricted by her two-handed play. She probably would have done herself a lot of good playing more freely like Mauresmo.
