Conchita played 21 times against Seles. Conchita only won once (Stanford 1997). She only won four sets in 21 matches... Mónica was one of her worst black beasts. This match (1999 in Miami) was third round (non fourth). I would like to have the possibility of watching something of their first match (Virginia Slims Championships 1989) or the last one (also Miami, 2002). I think the one in Stanford (1997) was not broadcasted. Thank you so much for your generosity.
Monica had excellent, precise footwork, which really enabled her to play very cleanly against someone like Conchita. Conchita, though she had a good deal of variety - and could really hit the ball with her forehand - was a lot more predictable in her shot choices than Martina Hingis. Conchita also wasn’t as good as many of of her contemporaries, moving from the diagonals and back into the centre of the court.
Another issue is that Conchita's slice backhand wasn't as effective as Graf's or Novotna's. Because it didn't stay down as low as the aforementioned players, it wasn't challenging for Monica to get underneath it.
Will never understand how Conchita beat Martina at Wimbledon and how she won it?! She was probably the least interesting player to watch from this era.
Martina was WAY past her prime when she lost to both at Wimbledon. Prime Martina would never lose to Seles or Martinez on grass. Seles is a great player of course, but not on grass as her career record on grass proves.
One thing both Seles and Hingis did really well against Martinez is force her off the court with angles. And because both players hit the ball on the rise so well, they really exposed how Conchita's court positioning was pretty second rate. So even if Martinez hit a good shot, if Seles/Hingis was able to get there and hit a good shot back, Conchita was often left scrambling even though she had been in a winning position seconds earlier. Another issue is that Martinez's slice backhand wasn't as good as Graf's or Novotna's. And because it didn't stay down as low to the court, it was moderately easy for other players to club away at it.
Martinez actually had losing records against almost all the very top players of her era including Novotna, Pierce Sabatini, Sanchez Vicario, Davenport and even Huber. Her rankings and consistency show she was great at destroying lower ranked players though.
@@donallynch1689 Conchita was a well known nemesis for Davenport until the later turned the table around since 2000. Besides, Kimiko Date also had a lopsided H2H record against Conchita.
Conchita's game was all about spin/high balls and slice. She mastered these areas, but was unable to change her game if the situation required it. This together with her poor mentality made her matches against Seles that boring and frustrating. She also lacked enough power to move Monica around.

Conchita’s slice, topspin and moonball can’t really disrupt Monica, who always positions herself well and hit unbelievable shots.

Martinez also had a very weak serve. Compare her serve to Graf's when they played each other.

I think that Monica, even getting out of bed and dressed in pajamas, would have been able to beat Conchita Martinez at Wimbledon in 1994.😂
It's a travesty that we can't ever see Conchitas one and only win over Sales in 1997
Both are 2 of the few to have wins over Navratilova at the cathedral of grass - Wimbledon !

@@pjw1980 Since Martina was 37 years old. It is hardly surprising.

With her slice, Conchita really should have had a better record against Seles....

she lucked out Wimbledon in 94, then only reached another Slam F in her career
