- Almost faultlessly, Lindsay demolished Monica in a winner-after-winner match. Monica raised the game, but out of all the meetings against each other, she won the least games. It was also Lindsay's first tournament as the No.1 player in the US.
Monica and Lindsay 💖
Enjoy!
Even today, Lindsay's clean ball striking is a behold to watch.
Sorry, I got my wording wrong. Even today, Lindsay's clean ball striking is a sight to behold!
Little wonder Serena said in an interview that Davenport was the hardest hitter of the ball she had ever played against.
@@rajusaha855 I would definitely believe her
There were a few draws in 1998 when Graf and Seles could have met....here, where Seles lost before the final and also in San Diego and Wimbledon where Graf lost first.
Que potencia davenport 💪❤
Monica was probably the best returner in the history of the game but she always had fits With Davenports serve , just couldn’t read it that was the main difference In their rivalry , from the back of the court there wasn’t much between them .
Monica punished slow serves like no one else. But against big servers she had massive problems.
Monica missing 2 1/2 years from the tour had everything to do with it...she was not the same player.
@@joeyconvery2055more like the game had passed her by. She was dominant because she was one of the few who could hit with immense power - by the time she returned many others could match or exceed her power.
@jk-m1440 2 1/2 years is a huge amount of time to leave the tour...her timing and reflexes were much slower. And she lost some of her mental toughness.
I remember Hingis took 6 months off due to surgery and she really dropped in the rankings....She lost to Monica in straight sets at the 2002 US Open after her surgery.
In the final Davenport lost to Graf.
yes..i remember that..
I remember being surprised by that. After the U.S Open, Graf had to take more time off due to wrist surgery. I remember thinking that with another injury and more time off, that would not bode well for her for the indoor court season. But she came back and won both Leipzig and Philadelphia. And got to the SF at the year ending championships. Graf had become very unpredictable that entire year with demoralizing losses to players like Appelmans, Sugiyama, and Serna. But then she could sometimes look very inspired from time to time like she did at a few tournaments here and there.
Her wrist injury must have been very minor....apparently she did it in the warm up against Schnyder in the US Open....but she had been building momentum throughout the year up to that point.
The faster the court the less chance of Seles winning
Indoor carpet was one of Seles' favourite surfaces.. Her least favourite was the very slow, high bouncing Miami and Indian Wells courts, she suffered some abysmal defeats there.
@ her worst surface was grass. Look at the win loss %
@@ally2885 Yes, but she still played quite well on grass. Her problem was not the high speed of it but the low bounce, so players with a good backhand slice like Graf, Garrison or even Studenikova caused her big trouble.
@@ipiap she did because she was a fantastic player. Unfortunately she did have limitations due to her technique and movement.
@@ally2885 OK. To sum it up:: Seles did generally play exceptionally well on fast courts (according to Federer, clay is actually very fast too) , her movement was actually pretty great too, but because of the 2 handed technique she needed one step more to get into position and that made her often very vulnerable, especially on the backhand side.
Davenport's movement is so bad.
She likely would have won more in her career if her mobility had been better. With the exception of Venus Williams, taller players on the WTA tour often had poor mobility. You think of players like Betty Stove, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, Helena Sukova, etc. Their mobility was often their biggest weakness.
If her movement was so bad, how was she able to hit her strokes so cleanly? Yall think movement is just about foot speed when it's not. It's about footwork as well and if her movement was so bad, her strokes would have been as well. You think she just stood there to wait for the ball to get to her so she could hit it?
