All the credit goes to Jennifer, who played particularly relaxed . However, Monica had an incredible season in 1996. After nearly three years away, she returned to Grand Slam success, winning five titles, including the Australian Open, Sydney, Eastbourne, the Canadian Open in Montreal, and the Tokyo tournament. She reached the final of the US Open, the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and the Olympic Games, and even finished the year as world number two. She had just won the Fed Cup and had smoothly passed through the first two rounds. So, all the credit goes to Jennifer, who proved in this match that she had the potential to become the best in the world, which she eventually achieved five years later, in 2001-2002.
Thanks for this awesome match by 2 of my favourite players.. I found Jennifer Capriati played a more solid game in the 90s..flat consistent groundstrokes.
She moved away from totally flat groundstrokes in the 00's for the same reason most players did. The game got more athletic wherein there were power players like Williamses, clijsters, henin etc who also had stellar movement, they could get to those shots and flatter shots are easier to redirect. Hitting big flat shots consistently against those type of players often backfires.
@@anthonytanner1546 she did. And if her shoulder wasn’t gubbed and ball toss way out to the right she would have kept her 90’s flat serve and been even more effective.
@@anthonytanner1546Jennifer did use topspin.. very well actually..I never said all her shots were flat.. I should know I hit her many times in Sydney Australia.. Her grip became more semi western..which is why she had more spin later in her career..
Monica not in form this part of the 96 season, this loss to Jennifer then got hammered by Hingis the week after and then a retirement against Date at the year end championship.monica seems a bit off the pace and not serving well probably due to her shoulder injury.
It’s Monica slow movement and lack of depth I see here but not a horrible match but not near her best form in 96 ( in January) Jen played well above her current level at this time and the combo was enough for the win

She did play flatter / possibly more aesthetically pleasing. However she was not as successful till the 00’s.
Because her nemisis Steffi Graf wasn't there in 2000's. She won 3 slams in transition period. She was better in 90's.

I was there!!!!
Jennifer was just coming back after a 2 year break ❤
A two year break from using the devil's dandruff?
What a match by Jennifer, at Times she looks like Serena, unbelievable power off the groundstrokes and serve. Did she win the final?
She lost to novotna in 3 sets
@@user-pk4pn9el1c yes... Novotna was never a good match-up for Jennifer.

@@user-pk4pn9el1c the backhand seems more than alright, the forehand a little short when attacked with power

Maureen Connolly won 8 slams before she was 20, just FYI.
The draws of 128 players?! I don't think so.
@justtennischannel2 That is true but she still has 8 slams before 20 lol. Although I agree that Seles's was more impressive in a modern era.
No Engrish. :(
