As a Tampanian, I am ALWAYS so proud of my boys Kumba and Montu. Not only do they always show up in lists like this, they're almost always right next to each other too. Brothers. These videos are excellent, subbed! The idea of revisiting old Top 10 lists is really interesting and I'm surprised I don't see people do this more often.

Kumba has long been near the top of my bucket list of coasters. I am a huge fan of Arrow's 7 inversion "megaloopers" and Kumba looks to me like a more graceful, but equally intense version of that. Montu looks amazing as well, but I have been on MANY B&M inverts. I have never ridden a B&M sit-down coaster (I put the floorless models in their own category), so that is why I am more excited to get on Kumba.

  • @casuallystalled

  • @mikewalker4950

    For me….
    1. Magnum
    2. Montu
    3. Raptor
    4. Kumba
    5. Alpengeist
    6. Steel Phantom
    7. Mindbender
    8. Batman clones
9 and 10 would be a pick 2 from Bat, FOF clones, Vortex and BBW.
Haven’t ridden anything outside of the US or any of the Morgan hypers.
Edit: I’d actually probably put Gemini at 9 and pick one of the 4 for 10. Gemini is underrated IMO especially for pre-99 coasters. Even with riding everything it would like still be top 15 for me.

"What would your top 10 look like if you took away everything post 1998?" A fascinating question, and a great thought experiment! Here's my list. Apart from Nemesis and Olympia, none of it would rank very high in today's top 10! A surprising amount of Vekoma on the list, but that comes with living in Europe.
    1 Nemesis (Alton Towers)
    2 Olympia Looping (Travelling)
    3 Matterhorn Bobsleds (Disneyland)
    4 Python (Efteling)
    5 Psyké Underground (Walibi Belgium)
    6 Colorado Adventure (Phantasialand)
    7 Vogel Rok (Efteling)
    8 Bobbahn (Heide-Park)
    9 Alpina Bahn (Travelling)
    10 Revolution (Bobbejaanland)

@@JNattyBoi I imagine things like Dragon Khan, Grand National and the Paris edition of Big Thunder Mountain might be on the list after I've gotten a chance to ride them.
There is also the question of the SLC. Some pre-1998 SLCs, such as El Condor (the original headbanger!), have gotten new trains and ride a lot better as a result. El Condor would, in its current form, earn a place on the list. However, since it had the old terrible trains back then, does it count?

Watching this made me nostalgic. Kumba and Montu are the two I remember most fondly from childhood. The thrill of being tall enough to ride them, and always wanting the front row seat if I thought the side line was short enough. I got curious to see it, and while Busch Gardens Tampa has many new coasters, it seems those were top 2 even in the 2021 poll. And Montu was one of two pre-1998 coasters (Along with Nemesis which is one notch higher) to break the actual top 50. That's a high praise for a coaster like that.

  • @TheHylianBatman

Removing my post-98 steel credits, my ranking would be as follows:
    1. Journey to Atlantis
I'm not very well-travelled yet. Gotta get to Busch Gardens and Cedar Point.
I find it interesting how different times can have different perceptions of the same ride. Nemesis, for example; I did not expect it to rank so highly in the other polls!
I also lament the lack of overseas representation. I wish that people would include them in their lists, even if most of us can never make it there.
I miss Big Bad Wolf, that's one I'm sad I missed.
Another excellent video! Thank you! These insights into coaster fans are very interesting.

It's surprising just how much of my credits list disappears when you limit it to steel coasters from 1998 and before...I've got a pretty iconic list, still, though. This was fun to put together!
1.) Riddler's Revenge (Six Flags Magic Mountain) - Stand-ups are divisive, but I'm the perfect height and skinniness for them, so it's *exceptionally* forceful in just the right way.
2.) Magnum XL-200 (Cedar Point) - I accidentally caught a water bottle in my open hand on the b-hops. If that's not memorable, I don't know what is. Just an awesome ride from start to finish.
3.) Phantom's Revenge (Kennywood) - Does this count? The ride did not exist in its current form in 1998. Still good, whatever.
4.) Batman: The Ride (SFMM, SFGA) - Say what you will about cookie cutters but this ride is popular for a reason.
5.) Ninja (Six Flags Magic Mountain) - Best suspended coaster in the world?
    6.) Vortex (Kings Island) - R.I.P.
7.) Viper (Six Flags Magic Mountain) - On a good day, I love it. On a bad day, it's a day-ender.
8.) Revolution (Six Flags Magic Mountain) - One of the first coasters I ever rode, and it still holds up, both in its own right and as a 'prepper' for the many other far more intense rides at the park.
9.) Montezooma's Revenge (Knott's Berry Farm) - Iconic flywheel shuttle, a rare and dwindling breed. Probably won't have its flywheel any more, though.
10.) Whizzer (Six Flags Great America) - I absolutely love this quirky toboggan-seated thing. Both times I've ridden it, it's been one of my favorites of the day, even alongside much more intense rides. It's just FUN!
Oversaturated on the SFMM front, but it's my home park and is home to a whole bunch of steel coasters from the 90s, so can you blame me? :P

      @@JNattyBoi You're welcome! :)
Riddler is my favorite ride at SFMM even when taking into account the newer rides, actually. It'll be a sad day when stand-up coasters go extinct as they're quite fun to ride, with the right body type. maybe they'll see some sort of revival one day.
I'm similarly envious of all those iconic coasters from the southeast quarter that I've never set foot in -- Florida and Virginia are high on my list of next states to visit, but I just got through with a journey all across PA recently (wonderful state, unbearable August weather, constant thunder closures + missed credits) so "coaster trip" funds are pretty much depleted. :P

    • @JNattyBoi
      @JNattyBoi  2 года назад +3

Yeah it's tough to say for sure. I will say that CoasterBot's poll does an excellent job at eliminating continent/country bias, as it makes direct comparisons between individual roller coasters (meaning the poll isn't a popularity contest like Amusement Today's).
I also removed coasters built after 1999 from the poll results seen in the video. As for the overall poll results, both Nemesis (46th) and Montu (47th) placed in the top 50. In the poll the year before, Montu placed one spot ahead of Nemesis. Basically, people seem to like these coasters equally and it's a bit of a toss up when it comes to ranking them against each other.
