What a wonderful woman. I have lived in Mill Valley for 38 years. I hope to see her around town and thank her for her remarkable efforts. The world needs more creative minds like hers.

Really interesting and I will certainly be checking out her book,from local library, but it saddened me that so many seats were empty at her talk and the way they were obviously disbelieving her on many things which she had obviously spent time researching and getting ALL the facts.
I have often wondered about those dog poopy bags and it's shocking that there are people who have to stand and pick those bags out of the compostable conveyor and empty them! And she made me smile when she talked about her favorite plant at the airport.
I am saddened by the negativity of people in regards to trying to like a more sustainable life. The people who take a bag, not because they need one but because it is free. The people who knew they would be shopping but either didn't bring bags or "Left it in the car". Good for Bea and the people like her who are searching for better ways to live and to help our planet. Long may they continue to fight to make this world a better place for everyone and every living thing.
Jeez all these people in the comments wanting her to be vegan. Sure it would be great but she is already doing something amazing
I agree so much. How anyone has the nerve to criticise such trail blazing baffles me. The important thing to focus on is the sheer power of her determination and what she has achieved. Any of us can harness this determination in our own lives. That is inspiring. In a society filled with plastic and consumerism it takes so much heart and courage to buck the overlying trend instead of caving in and/or following the herd. So much respect for this woman and all that are inspired to change their lives as a result of her inspiration.
The one thing I hate about the zero waste movement is how some people are so strict. The earth doesn’t need one person to do things perfectly, but many imperfectly. That’s why I aim for a low waste lifestyle instead. It’s a more reachable goal and doesn’t sound as intimidating
Bea is doing such an amazing job. I love how she does it with such elegance and style. Since I discovered her, I learned I can make all these personal care products myself, like toothpaste, sunscreen etc. It's been SO much fun!!!

MusicMan she's not telling people how to live, she's providing people with ideas and opportunities. This is how she did this with her family. She's showing that there are ways to be low impact without starving yourself or having an ugly home.
I really do not understand why they are not vegetarian or vegan .. But I really do admire their lifestyle. Such a commitment. So inspiring !
Some of us nearly died from no animal protein. I am allergic to soy, wheat, dairy, and beans. I did not know this during my 14 years as a strict vegetarian. Some folks really cannot do it. Fresh fruits and veggies-yes; nuts-yes. No digestible protein = HUGE problem.
Because God gave us animals to eat but do not eat Pork it's unclean. Also follow the muslim way how to slaughter the animals it's the correct way if you love Allah

I think a lot of these ideas are really great. Some of them, because of my location in a small city in a prairie province that has very few of the fancier health food stores with orange juice squeezing machines, and is -30 C outside in the winter (so more driving or bussing because of the threatening snow/cold), are not feasible for me at the moment, but I'm definitely going to try to utilize as many as these ideas as I can!
Andrea Martineau i don't think it is about buying at Whole Foods necessarily but at the smaller local businesses. Btw i looked up how to make my own olive oil soap, easy,cheap and useful for everything. Same with a couple of toiletries. Like she says we don't need much.

I love how this woman has reduced her family's waste to surprisingly little and randos on the internet have to devalue her efforts because she eats some meat.
Hmm, on one site u don't know how much she is actually eating and one has to admit that having zero waste everything but excluding food is still the most difficult change for people. As well as one shouldn't forget how bit of an impact animal farming actually is. Yes, she mightve found lots of ways to reduce visible waste but invisible went over her head for sure

At the 47 minute mark where she talks about using glass and the word typed is TEAR, its actually TARE which is when you place the empty glass container on the scale and its zero's out so you then start from 0 weight and then once the food item is placed inside it weighs ONLY the food itself.

Tare weights are such a key part of Bea's bulk buying system that correct spelling and definition can only assist those who want to learn more.

Interesting about the plastic cups at a green event. that was the same as at a sustainable event at my home town. It was ridiculous, plstic coffee cups and water cups everywhere, plastic water bottles, ugh! Ridiculous.
I watched that today while sitting in a train in India where people just throw their waste out of the window ... they have a long way to go

Imagine if you go vegan (whole foods plant based) and are a zero waster! You will maximize reducing your negative impacts exponentially. I mean that would probably surpass monk status. Unison with the planet. I am going to work towards that! I love my planet and my fellow earthlings!

Most vegans are extremists and fascists (just look at all the comments here from vegans). They hate meat-eaters and force everyone to become vegan. Zero waste and minimalist lifestyles on the other hand are decisions that one makes for himself and don't harm others.

{FIRST_NAME} {LAST_NAME} you obviously haven't met a lot of vegans I know many and none are extremist or fascist. We do have the right to be though because eating animals is cruel and harmful to the environment. So yes, sometimes maybe people get hyped up about that, however no one can force you to do something you don't want to do though. Maybe it's your conscious that's taking it all so personally?

Another great way to focus on zero waste is by encouraging, supporting, and investing in a c.s.a's, farmer's marketing, and co-op's within your community. As a result, you actually have a source to purchase local & bulk, accessibility makes zero waste even possible. I encourage you to support the a food co-op business model=community owned grocery store-open to all. This will help you to maintain zero waste while impacting your community, food, and the environment.

The "compostable" green bags are supposed to be used in a landfill. Not a composting facility. They break down faster than normal plastic bags IN A LANDFILL. If it dissolves in less than forever in a landfill, it "composts".
I wonder if the zero waste community wonder or care for the waste that bulk store produce, which must be less than regular stores but still there is waste. Also, all the stores even second hand produce waste, so, I wonder, why would they call themselves zero waste if they are still making waste? I think that a more appropriate label for them would be low waste

Mao Yu Maybe she will go vegan in the future. We can hope! I've been vegan for about a year and a half now and I'm currently transitioning to zero waste. It's challenging, but I'm enjoying it :-)

I'm going zero waste so my plastic doesn't end up in the ocean or the landfill. So horrible for animals, and they don't deserve it!
I'm glad she is buying organic because that is saving a lot of lives, conventional produce is killing a lot of humans, the harvesters, because seem to care for them. Most vegans only care for animals which is very considering the abuse that harvesters suffer in conventional farms. Organic farms care so much for their workers as well as for the animals, that's something I want to support.

I've already changed for the minimum at home - I even moved to a studio ;) but starting a zero waste plan will be more difficult for sure. Cause it doesn't depend of us only... But we should all try
Whilst I applaud this lady and her efforts, it is a hell of lot easier to do all of this stuff when you don't have a day job.
Once you get your life figured out it goes on autopilot, but yes, it does take some time.

I just emailed Pepperidge farm (Campbels) to ask them to stop putting the plastic trays in their cookie packages. They are the only packaged cookies I buy. I am sue there is a thick cardboard they can use. Lots of tips here! thanks
Hi Bea, is your book printed in the US? Or overseas?
You aren’t supposed to compost bones. They are animal products and contaminate a compost. But otherwise, I love this! We are so wasteful and think it’s the only way to be or that it’s normal!
Not sure about this. How can animal products that have been worn and worked down to their minimal aspects be able to contaminate compost? Aren't there bacteria and bugs that can work it away? Or are you talking about city composts that use grinders and bacteria?

The problem is supermarkets in my country do not allow their customers to go in with their bags. They should be put in the front counter and are allowed to be taken only after we finish shopping. :(
I'm guessing the alternative to Lip Plumper is NOT Lip Plumper.
Also, the alternative to toilet paper is a thick wet rag(wash cloth) then
washing said hands often. Depending on the religion of the people that can see you, choose the hand you eat with.
One may have to practice. Please, still wash both. Wash often whether you need to or not.

What about when you travel on planes, !???what about the boarding pases, or at the supermarket what do you do with the ticket from the bill
Many stores actually print two receipts, so you could simply not take it and use online billing to manage your finances. The other option is to reuse it as note paper since the printer ink does fade so fast. Lastly, shred and compost. The online option would work well since many companies(not sure about air lines) are going in the direction of electronic boarding passes and bar codes that can be scanned off of phones now.

Water pic. Helps fighting gum disease and plaque and bad breath and cavities. I wish I had known about it years ago! My breath is so fresh all the time. It's amazing. I also use the baking soda and activated charcoal to keep my teeth bright white. I get compliments all the time

Always eat organic meats to protect animals (they are expensive because they pay a lot to make sure their animals have a good life before feeding us and they donate money to organizations that protect animals) even vegetables that are non organic have a terrible side effect on the humans behind, did you know that those farmers get cancer and lung diseases because of pesticides? Let's eat organic! Meat and vegetables! Like we are supposed to eat!
While organic is a powerful movement, it's not as progressive as it could be. Many pesticides can still be used on organic food and many organic regulations do not encourage progressive waste management programs. Lets work with our law makers to make sure organic becomes what we need it to be, and keep supporting it so it can be the true normal :)

At 5:15 you talk about the no poo method and that your husband said he doesn't like the smell of the vinegar. You said you would have a solution, but you didn't mention what this solution is. I would love to get an answer, because I have the same problem that my partner hates this smell. So please help me! 😊
She mentioned they use a bulk bar soap for hair, body, etc...
you can also use shikakai, or chickpeas flour with some water to make a paste, and use some essential oil for a better smell.
she said she used bar soap for her hair/body and gets conditioner from a pump at her local market. : )

What about electronics? Computers? Phones? Ear phones?
For everything electronic, use your devices as little as possible, do not purchase if you do not need, make sure that if you are thinking of replacing something to make sure that you did use it as much as possible and that there are no reasons it would need to be replaced sooner(screen protectors/phone cases are plastic but extend the life of the phone by at least a year). Try to buy devices the same size or type as your previous ones to avoid building up unnecessary chargers, cables, and carrying cases. Make sure to recycle at local electronic recycle events. A good option for computers is to build one yourself so you can do research on each part to try to find the best possible option. And with the experience of learning to build a computer if it needs to be fixed you can replace a single part or two instead of the entire thing.
Its not much, but its a good start since it's hard to be part of modern society without access to electronics. Personally still own a pair of blue tooth ear buds for almost two years and my phone is over three years old and still works as well as my husbands brand new one, minus the memory space.

What is the ultimate motive of Zero Waste? Is it to have a paid vacation? When your saving is reinvested to care and share the nature and unprivileged community, I'll be serious listening to you, Bea.
While the 'they paid for our vacation' line did throw me off, it may be more comforting to think that "instead of staying in a hotel and using those little plastic soaps and paper disposables where housekeeping might come in and waste energy and resources cleaning every day, we can earn some money by having people stay in a zero waste home and experience what it's like to reduce their consumable nature". Not to mention that many natural and state parks use the revenue from vacationers and tourists to keep the environment protected and provided for.
Also, it is a talk presented to google employees. If you are looking for an unprivileged community then you are looking in the wrong spot.

Part of zero waste that a lot of people take for granted is not tossing perfectly usable items in favor of buying something else. Its much better to reuse as often as possible instead of directly adding to a landfill. She did mention that her garbage can was from before she started composting, so it's good that she's not being wasteful :)
