I have been on many trips and for me I would rather stay home. I like a house that's cozy and I enjoy decorating . I cant imagine living in a house that looks cold, unwelcoming as if no one lives there.

A couple things are bothering me. First I am confused about how not taking a receipt or leaving packaging at the store is zero waste. If you purchase groceries and a receipt is printed; its yours even if you leave it for someone else to deal with; your groceries created it. Next if that computer came in packaging; its yours; your purchase came with it. Also I would never give a list of gifts I am willing to accept; that seems rude and tacky; better option since you feel that way, is just to say Please "NO" gifts.

Our local stores give the option of no receipts or to have them emailed to you. 🙂

Refusing the receipt sends a message to the shop that there is a desire to be able to waive having a receipt printed...a customer can opt into an email or texted receipt, just in case. The more people who refuse the receipt the sooner there will be change. Companies pay attention to customer preferences and actions. If customers start sending packaging waste back and requesting better packaging options (such as recyclable packaging, reusable packaging, minimal packaging), OR stop buying their products, you can bet the companies will make changes. Our power lies in how we spend our money. As to your third point...a wish list is as traditional as it comes. No matter what the occasion is, wouldn't you rather give something that you know the recipient will enjoy?

paper is compostable your computer and its plastic packaging is your responsibility. instead of buying new computers and junk you can reuse it to death.Your garbage is now ending up in Bulgaria for a poor to deal with. think of that when you buy more crap???

Although we respect and try for zero waste, there is no such thing....it's less waste, even less recycle. One thing that kinda seems weird to me is they travel which means flights, etc. So there waste is different then ours, we do experiences as a family but local with none or low gas use. I suppose it really is an individual process and to reduce as much as you can on a personal level.

I'm really curious about pills, contraceptive methods/products. Many people need to take pills. I know this lifestyle is healthier but near that, some still need it, is there a way out? Almost all are packed in plastic.

I like to use old pill bottles for organizing/storing small things, or for growing things (or as seed starters). For example, you can grow green onions in the window in an old pill bottle. It would be nice if the pharmacy let you reuse them by slapping a new sticker on the old one.
I believe Bea said her husband's antibiotic blister pack is in their jars of waste every year, so it's definitely a problem for her, too.

Some IUDs have the hormones that some people need to manage their cycles, and there are also IUDs made with copper. The IUDs last for years.

Good for her that she feels no connection with the drawings she or her kids did when they were little-I personally remember all of my works and truly recognize myself in them, so it’s pretty hard for me to simply throw them away.

one should always make room for memories

  • @yosemite735

Heritage of memories is only one generation. If land was in your family, would you pass it to the next generation or sell it for experiences? Agree that we do not need to keep all the "stuff" for the next generation, we do need to keep some stuff for them. As an adopted person who got their family back, getting my great grandfather's bible he brought from Scotland, was an incredible experience. To open the cover and still see the names of my great grandfather and great grand uncle (he gave the bible to him) is way better than a bike ride somewhere.

I wonder if the zero waste community wonder or care for the waste that bulk store produce, which must be less than regular stores but still there is waste. Also, all the stores even second hand produce waste, so, I wonder, why would they call themselves zero waste if they are still making waste? I think that a more appropriate label for them would be low waste

@@glb6154 it would be great if it was possible, but totally impossible unless someone owns a completely self sustainable farm where they can get everything that one person might need.

The real solution is to identify the sources of waste and start there. Single-use plastic is relatively new to the history of human consumption. It is the greatest source of waste out there and growing year over year. The companies that produce all this plastic packaging are culpable for all the waste. They need to be held accountable for the waste their products generate, and the solutions for managing the waste. Waste itself is avoidable, and at the very least if they were actively pursuing packaging that is universally recyclable and supporting initiatives to educate consumers on how to handle the packaging, we might be able to turn this around. Labels don't need to detract from the goal of living a zero-waste lifestyle...sending nothing to landfill.
