I was in tears when they started making space in cafe.
Manager took 3 seconds to process, made a decision, everyone was on board without a word.
A surprisingly good example of the bystander effect. A lot of people want to help, but don't know what to do, but the second someone else steps up and takes action and gives direction, people listen and people act
Same here 😢
It's surprising how, considering how divided humanity is, we can still come together if needed.
@@Whiskeyactual9531 yeah, it's a very common response in these situations. It's why leaders are so valuable in our society at our core most humans are lost without direction
I got emotional at that part
"We need to make some space"
Only good thing about tragedies is seeing the height of selflessness some people will rise to.
You think that's selfless? Some guy committed a crime for something he believed in. If only he hit the 20 mark
@@SegularRpork I wasn't talking about the driver. I was talking about the people in the restaurant who turned it into a triage station.

Dr. Charles’ face when he realised what that guy was saying. He was horrified. I think we all were.
Considering the perp just admitted to felony murder and multiple hate crimes uh can you really blame him?
Not saying this to be a Karen but as a very experienced psychiatrist in a city like Chicago you would think nothing would shock or even surprise him anymore
BUT!!!!!
I am glad he is still human enough to feel horrified which unfortunately happens to alot of cops, drs etc when it becomes that routine
"The day's not over yet "made me so sick. Like everyone is praying for people to make it and this sicko is out there waiting it out like he has gone fishing or some sort of game score.
Some people’s beliefs can lead them to doing stupid and dangerous acts/decisions
What scares me more about being a doctor is you dont know who you're saving until you saved them. Then you know how much of a scum they are but you cant do anything cuz you're just doing your job. Its an awfully sad reality, and it gives me a headache thinking about it
Similar thing happened in the city I’m studying in, a man drove a pickup truck over the curb and ran over a Muslim family of 5, only the youngest child aged 9 survived. It was a premeditated hate crime, he targeted the family out of hate for their religious beliefs. It’s crazy how some people can irrationally hate others so much just for being different that they are willing to kill to prove their point
How did he even know they were Muslim?
london, ontario?
I remember that incident 😭😭😭
@@life.with.too.many.animals9411 Some of the women in the family wore the hijab, and they were South Asian.

As for the family, may they rest in peace. That poor kid though. 💔
Dr Charles is so psychic and skilled at his job he knew which patient was the one he needed to pin down ASAP.
Yep! But I also don’t think I’ve ever seen Dr Charles so terrified before. When that guy started straight out confessing to what he did and his wish to do more? Dr Charles looked like he’d seen a ghost!
I think it was the obvious choice. Either it was an accident and his mental state is gonna be in shambles for killing a lot of people or he did it on purpose and yes that would makes you a mental patient
Yeah it's almost as if he read it off a script
I mean he was the driver... not much orher choice there

The fact that the entire café, including the customers began working together to help the injured just restores my faith in humanity.

This episodes made me realize I am not empathic enough to become a doctor, if I ever had a patient with such mindset and such thirst to kill I would immediately put them under some meds that will not only kill them but would also made the process slow and painful. It’s so true. If a person of white ethnicity were to go on a mass shooting, no one will call them a terrorist nor will there be an attack on a Catholic Church. So why do it to any other people? It’s just that society doesn’t like difference …
I’m not trying to justify bad actions, but these occur no matter the race or religion. Some just take these actions by a certain race or religion to justify hate

I will never, ever, ever understand racism.
Neither will I and I will explain it well partially, so when racism was normal some poeple told that to their kids and that went on and on until this. Some poeple are just racist cause something is wrong or trauma and others well I don’t know I hope that helps

The fact that this actually happens in real life is horrifying
It did. People seem to forget Waukesha
The fact they have to treat the culprit as well as the victims and him actively hoping more people die. I really don't know how doctors do it. I know its all a show and stuff but doctors must have to have faced these circumstances.
you have to treat everyone, even the worst people. Plus the didnt know it was deliberate act. Sometimes its a genuine accident where someone gets unconscious behind the wheel or looses control over the car.
But believe me, med staff doesn't always treat you with kindness when you did something bad, most will do the bare minimum of keeping you alive but thats it.
And he hinted he gonna do it again. Call the police
Honestly? The doctors could've just lied and said that he was at the very bottom of the donor list. It's not like the board would investigate and who would want to admit they chose to help a murderer?
The chaos just from an incident like this makes me shiver at the thought of what the hospitals looked like on 9/11.
It probably looked like this but a billion times worse.
I did read that it was eeriely quiet when the nearby hospitals prepare for injured civilians because it took them a moment to realized that they'll receive more bodies than patients from the severity of the attack

I love all of them, they handle these types of situations so well, thank you for these videos 💖
I don't blame the mother for saying no (idk if she changes her mind later or something)
After a very unstable and racist man does that to her daughter? And so many other people? Gosh, the anger you would feel inside and the need to be able to have some control back after having no chance of saving her daughters life.
If she has no say in who gets a piece of her daughter, then I'd feel that anger resurfacing too. That's the kind of emotional trauma that'll take years of therapy and grief for her to feel somewhat in control again.
Just a horrible situation. I couldn't dream of how I'd feel if something like that happened to me, plus I am white so it would never be as close to the pain that mother would feel.
And yeah, I know that this is a scripted show, but this kind of thing does happen and the show does a good job in showing how far a mothers grief and anger can go. Let alone the anger a POC would feel in that situation... Thanks Chicago Med for showing things like this to people so that more people understand what can happen when racists decide to act on their unfounded hatred.
Edit: Thank you everyone who has replied without getting mad at someone else's views of morality. It's through discussion that we can all learn just a little more. And again, as a white person myself, remember that the mother is black and has years of ethnic abuse already implanted in her, and that there is no real 'yes' or 'no' answer to how she should react.
Thank you all again for being polite and respectful in my replies

The manager is an absolute legend, she immediately chose people over business
If you think about it if she didnt choose to help it would be blasted over social media and she would have lost tones of business.
I could never work in the ER because if someone like him wound up in my ward, I'd make sure he'd wish the crash had killed him
It's a real moral dilemma deciding whether to donate organs or not I can understand the mother's wish for the organs to not go to people who are not racist and undeserving like the man who drove the truck. But you can also picture possible situations where the organs would go to "good" people (thus saving their life). So it would be a really hard decision and one which she should never have to make.
The one thing I didn't like was that scene, because (although I may have misunderstood this), I think she said she wanted her daughter's organs going exvlusively to black people, and when she found out that's not how it worked, she decided against it, because anyone not black could be a racist in her mind. I get she wad going through an incredible trauma, but hatred and discrimination like that is the reason people commit heinous acts, like what happened to her daughter. Imagine a white mom had a daughter hurt by a black man, and she said that she'd only consent to organ donation if it went to white people, because other black people could be just as bad as the one that did this. It's the exact same scenario, and it propagared hatred and mistrust based solely on race, which is the definition of racism. (Edit was for spelling errors).

Tragedies and crises really do bring out both the best and the worst in humanity. People are driven to the height of either selflessness or selfishness.
Seeing the dichotomy between the hateful, awful driver. Then the selfless, helpful bystanders not hesitating to help the injured is great.
It also shows the bystander effect in critical detail, and it tells you what to do if you see it.
When something horrible happens, most bystanders want to help, but it’s so outside of the norm they don’t know what to do. But all they need is someone to step up and tell the what to do to help, and they help. You see this everywhere the bysatnder effect takes place, all it takes is one person to break the ‘trance’ and do something and then everyone else immediately follows. Everyone in that cafe knew what happened and were empathetic and wanted to help, they just didn’t know what to do. As soon as Natalie came in and said “do this to help” they jumped to do it immediately.
If you take something away from this, if you are one of the few who are immune/resistant to the Bystander Effect, take charge in crises, even temporarily. If you run into a situation and direct, people will follow when you break that first barrier.

It’s very common for humans to feel more concern over animals than humans in these situations. It’s because humans see animals (well, pets like cats and dogs) as innocent and unable to do anything bad. But people see other humans as flawed and able to do bad things. That’s also why people get more upset about babies and children getting injured too.
