Am a retired teacher and decided to teach myself calligraphy as you do and ordered some books and pens and made a start it was okay-ish but your video breaking the letter down into strokes makes everything so much easier I’ve looked at other calligraphy videos but speaking as a professional teacher of 30 Years...yours is the best I’ve found for content, clarity ....just all round..

I'm pushing 70 and never had any interest in calligraphy until I watched this video and several of Becca's other video's. Now I've got Tombow brush pens and Rhodia paper ordered, and I've signed up for one of her courses. I think she hypnotized me with those darned eyes. Her well organized and precise approach to teaching really piqued my interest. Nice job Becca, and thank you.

As a beginner, I can say that this is the best breakdown of calligraphy I have seen so far after watching multiple videos the last few days. This was the first time hearing that cursive and calligraphy are different because calligraphy letters are composed of strokes. So excited to have that base knowledge when I'm practicing the basics! Thank you!

I like how she adds an extra element into writing. most tutorials focus on the lines and spacing. She adds a third element which is pressure. I really enjoyed watching this video as a better break down. Her detailed explanations of each letter is very impressive.

As someone who learned to write cursive as a child, I think there are two aspects that separate cursive from calligraphy. 1) The continuation - you don't lift your pen when writing cursive, but you do with calligraphy. 2) The pressure - you keep the same pressure throughout when writing cursive, but you put more pressure on down strokes and ease it on up strokes in calligraphy.

After seeing so many demonstration videos without revealing any basic rules of calligraphy, I stumbled upon this gem.
It TRULY is Calligraphy 101. THIS is someone that actually knows how to teach.
I’m actually trying to not only improve my cursive handwriting, but started getting accustomed to using a fountain pen and also have an interest in learning calligraphy. The more skills we can learn, the better our understanding of their differences and the better our proficiency can become.
Thank you, Becca, for making this video and providing such a vital understanding of the basics of calligraphy.
I’ll go and check out your course now.

It’s funny for me to “hear back when I learned cursive.” I learned to write some time in the late 60s. I was at a summer camp as a tot and remember people with guitars and proud Mary rolling. Little t-shirt from the moon landing when I was three so I was the 70s, when I learnt. There was no “print option.” My mother’s “cursive” always looks like calligraphy, she didn’t lift the pen.
One of the inspiration Steve Jobs had for the Apple computer was a calligraphy class he took in college. I remember that because it struck me as illogical. This is an all-round fantastic video, I can actually make sense of the “instruction” packet in this kit I found at a yard sale. The fountain pens were dried up unfortunately. The tip of the pen makes sense and I thought you had to keep a constant stroke but turn the tip for the thinner lines. Clears up a lot for me. Thank you so much. Now I just have to find the pens, my wife got me new ones. Always the women. I wished you would just start running the planet, make nice things, maybe people wouldn’t be hating on each other ALL the time. Fistfights turn into sewing circles with some fistfights after (we are humans after all) but less at least. 🙏

I must agree with some of the other comments here. My search was for information on the basic strokes of calligraphy and this site was the first. My father was a professional sign painter and his technique always fascinated me. At my young age I never knew he understood stroke pattern, that he actually took pressure off and lifted his brush to start every “part” of each letter.
I appreciate the simple explanation of the basic strokes. I want more detail and will definitely practice this technique.
I will follow her now. Thank you.

This is so cool. When I was learning to write the Catholic nuns would cane my hands for messy writing, which made it harder to write neater, resulting in more caning. I have always had messy writing as an adult, and when I try to write neater the trauma would tighten up the muscles in my hands making the writing worse. I am training myself through calligraphy to enjoy writing as artistic expression with your helpful content. Thank you!

I had kind of giving up practicing because I thought it was an artform that needed a lot of practice and I didn't enjoy it. But this seems actually doable although it needs practice aswell of course. Great video explaining the absolute basics of calligraphy. Nowadays they don't even teach cursive writing in schools - totally blows my mind! Anyway, you have helped me a lot.🥰

Nine basic calligraphy strokes, lift your pen from the page, practice, consistency, etc...
Looks like it’s time for me to pick up those pens and start practicing again. This time I’ll try and remember your advice.
    Thanks you so much. 👍🏽

Am getting a beautiful journalling Bible and so, not having any experience at all with calligraphy, want to learn the right way before even trying to write in this book. Thank you so much for making me aware of the mistakes that newbies like me would make. Hope that I'm able to learn it well enough to some day be able to write in this bible and be proud of how it looks to be able to hand it down to my family one day.

That piece of scrap paper that you used to illustrate the pen strokes that you probably threw away, most people watching this video would frame and hang on the wall! Amazing video.

I've just discovered your videos and watched a couple. They are really fantastic. My main interest has been Doing a copperplate style script. I've tried so many videos that claim to be how to's but all they are is somebody writing with no demo and no discussion.
Thank you so much for your clear and helpful instructions!

I'm coming back to your videos so often even when I _am_ now able to do decent calligraphy strokes. All thanks to your tutorials❤. I have been learning this _like_ waaay faster than I thought; in just approximately 2 months. I too learned cursive as everybody did as a child, but even then I just loved to break down the cursive in between a word because I thought the letters would be nicer in appearance. Now that I'm learning calligraphy I'm becoming more and more obsessed with writing as slow as I can to perfect my basic strokes 😍
