Totally cool! Wish I was that lucky. I fought it every time my teachers tried to teach cursive. 😔 clearly I’m regretting that now since I’m on this video.
Sam Rea My county simply stopped teaching in right when I was I'm the middle of elementary school. I can read it just fine, but can't write in it. Then again, my handwriting looks like a spastic retarded penguin on fire that's being electrocuted when I'm just writing normally also.
Dear CJ, A few months ago, last year I came across this video and I was bedazzled by your penmanship. Starting then, five months ago I wrote in a diary in cursive for the first time in years. It was hard to write and hurt my hand writing this way. But as the months rolled by and I wrote in my cursive handwriting every night before bed it gradually started to improve. Slowly but surely I watched my handwriting evolve from what I first learned back in 3rd grade to what truly is my truest and prettiest handwriting which I can call my own. It's slanted to the right, some letters curved and some dynamically moving through the lines of my paper, like a roller coaster I can now write fast and write good thanks to practice. I come back to this video and though I'm not as impressed with your penmanship and the magic is gone I can say that the lesson you taught me is still here, you have taught me the biggest lesson I ever needed to learn in life. That getting good at anything is as easy as getting started. Now I have started learning other things like guitar, sketching and other things. I come into it knowing nothing and slowly get better as time goes by and I can't thank you enough for the advice that has made my penmanship, as well as my life so much more beautiful.
I was taught cursive in school and I quickly learned to love it a great deal more than printing. I now find myself being one of very few people who know how to write in cursive. I often get compliments from strangers about how beautiful it looks. But the truth is I have used cursive for so long that I can't write in print anymore. If I try it usually ends up barely legible. But I still love cursive and I enjoy sometimes just writing what ever comes to mind just to keep my practice up and my writing as well done as my teachers taught me many years ago. It's a shame that schools no longer teach cursive. But I guess with learning about computers becoming the most needed skill these days I can understand why.
I was only thought how to write in cursive. During high school I transitioned to print because exchanging notes was hard for literally everybody else who wasn't used to it and even some teachers had a hard time reading it. It's been about 15 years and I almost completely forgot cursive. It's in the past few weeks I'm trying to transition back, but I really have to slow down and pay attention to every letter.
A nice elderly woman gave me a card, and I wrote her a card in return in cursive, and I was saddened to hear that she didn’t think I’d be able to read cursive, let alone write with it. It surprised her because she didn’t know it was taught anymore, as her grandchildren can read it. Cursive is a lost art, I tell ya.
That's the only way I was ever taught to write, always kind of shocks me when I see people write in blocky letters, I just assumed everyone wrote the same way, was never even taught printing, but I remember at some point in school they told us we can write however we want from now on, and I think that's when my handwriting started going terrible, because there wasn't any focus on it anymore, just speed
I am 16, and my grade was one of the last in our school system to be formally taught cursive in elementary school. I got the hang of it pretty quick and have always thought that it is beautiful. Now I write notes, reminders, and journal entries entirely in cursive. My friends always comment on how pretty it looks. I'm very grateful that I was taught!
I actually shifted my handwriting to cursive. They never taught us in school so I taught myself over quarantine. Now I write that way. I find it faster and way more neater. Also I'm gonna start writing this way so kids won't copy my paper lol. Most kids in my school can't really write or read cursive as much.
Yessss I love writing in cursive and calligraphy, most people learned at school but forgot how to write cursive except for myself and I write in cursive all the time at school and their like "what does that sAy"
I'm thinking to learn cursive coz my hand writing rythm is very fast, unstable and flowy, so I feel like my hand is probably begging me to learn cursive coz my handwriting generally terrible due to these factors
@@nickeni3050 Good. Teach yourself. I taught myself how to write in cursive by looking up videos on RUclips and images on Google. You'll get the hang of it. My handwriting is neat in print when I take my time but usually when I write in print I tend to drag my pencil very fast and like you my hand writing is unstable. It looks like I'm rushing with writing something when I'm not lol. My handwriting looks more neat when writing in cursive.
@@briannadale8532 I've had an English professor tell me the same thing. I was surprised bcuz thinking he was older and most likely he was taught cursive in school he was able to read it. Anyways, I hope I can fully learn how to before long Btw, how long did it take for your hand to get used to writing in cursive?
it makes me so happy to see so many people learning cursive! i was taught (well, i wasn’t there for the teaching part but i was required to use it) in elementary school and now that i’m in high school it’s definitely payed off. my cursive honestly isn’t much more neat than my normal print but it always makes me enjoy writing notes for school because i feel like i am some old important person, haha but hey!! best wishes to all that want to learn cursive! for a lot of people it’s easier to use once you get the gist of it, and for some it’s not; either way, have fun with your handwriting!
Thanks for the encouragement! People tell me I have beautiful handwriting, but I know that's only because standards are low. Like you say, I've let bad habits slip in. I recently pulled my old fountain pens out after letting them languish for a couple of years. I came to RUclips for inspiration to improve, and found it here!
when you told "some time we don't understand our own handwriting " i felt relived because this same is happening with me and happy to know that its a common problem and can be corrected.
You're the guy who's handwriting I sat pausiing your videos and recreating 4 years ago. You helped me with these short videos just from your really clean writing style that allows for such good flow when youre rolling. Very fun way to write while still writing so beautifully. Thank you for your inspiration, I am now a fountain pen addict and a confident writer!
Watching the video around 1:18 I now notice how your whole hand glides over the paper - instead of just writing with finger movement, you use whole hand movement. Up 'till now I've been writing with finger movement (I believe from ballpoint pen bad habits), and really struggled with your capital letters and making those beautiful curves. Switching to whole hand movement I can instantly see an improvement on my curves and slant angle. So we learn. :-)
Yes, i’ve always written with my palm resting on the paper, relying on finger movements rather than hand/wrist movements. This has affected my cursive as I have trouble writing long words. I’m hoping that changing the way I write cursive will help!
In calligraphy, the arm movement method is taught, so you're not just using your fingers. This allows for smoother, more whole and consistent strokes, which translates especially well to cursive.
I love writing in cursive! I've been practicing almost everyday and have definitely noticed a significant change. Now I'd like to find my own style. Thank you for the tips!
your writing style is somehow what I want to archieve. not too loopy and readable. just started yesterday, glad I still remembered the elementary cursive lessons.
Leader Egg, they do. Go to archive.org. Download the Spencerian Compendium PDF and Palmer’s Method PDF. In Spencerian Compendium, you’ll find many variations of cursive letters. My favourite is the angular hand script.
I’ve always been pretty clueless and unobservant, but I remember it coming as a complete surprise when I realised at uni that most people don’t write in cursive. Maybe it’s because I was schooled in a mixture of French, English and Arabic schools, so my handwriting kept switching between spiky script to loopy cursive. Then 3h-long exams became a thing and I quickly discovered that writing cursive was MUCH quicker, so I deliberately made myself change the overall ‘look’ of my writing with my teachers’ comfort in mind, such as making loops short and round rather than long or spiky. I even developed my own shorthand and code during lectures to get more on the page faster. This caused quite a bit of frustration from classmates who asked for my notes and couldn’t easily read them, but almost everyone who sees my writing compliments it regardless of legibility! To this day, I don’t really know why, because I never put much effort into neatness and as far as I’m concerned it’s irregular, spiky and difficult to read. But apparently it looks piratey, so I’ll take it!
Subha Mukherjee I've sorta gotten used to it by writing cursive on all my assignments and haven been doing it for a few weeks. I do believe it's about practicing a lot
Cursive is my handwriting. It is in my hand. My ancestors write cursive. Besides, it is now illegal for teachers to teach kids how to write in the national art of cursive. Is that mean or not? Plz get back to me and tell me if it is mean or not. Because I think it is.
I started using cursive at the beginning of quarantine, and now it physically pains me to write in print. But my cursive is like the print of cursive, kind of like how emails are the “snail mail” of electronic communication.
Your cj round hand has changed my writing completely.. everyone just gets amazed and shocked by writing... It also doesn't need time to write .... Thanks 😊
I love writing in cursive, I first learned cursive from my mother whenever I was first learning to write. Btw I just noticed that he was writing his entire script. Anyways I get a lot of compliments on my handwriting. And I just love ur handwriting
Since the day I watched this video, fountain pens and Cj's round hand handwriting became my favorite, I've watched this video more than 50 times now and can't stop myself
My dad was born in 1918 in Indiana and my mother-in-law was born in 1924 in New York City. They both had beautiful handwriting that was quite similar in style. In those days students all took penmanship classes and learned from a standardized textbook that was used in many schools across the country. I always had my dad sign my report cards so everyone would know the signature wasn't forged. I'm working on my handwriting so I can continue the tradition. If only I could my son interested too.
Try teaching him some gothic lettering. And there are many, many other styles that may make him interested: signs are a great show and tell, notice the leterrring styles, fonts, etc. Even the Declaration of independence is fantastic. My personal fav is John Hancocks signature. Even better- tell him the girls will like it!
I learned to write cursive in the 4th grade. It proved to be useful in middle school and high school because none of my teachers could read it; they just assumed it was fine and gave me full credit.
I learned cursive in elementary school and even though years later I didn't often write in cursive, I realized I could still read it whereas my peers would be stumped upon seeing any cursive writing.
Cursive is also disappearing where I live, but it's still admired and if a person can write in it, they will be praised for their good handwriting! I never wrote in cursive until I started going to college, and it really helped me write faster. My notes and diaries are also pretty to look at so it's a win!
I’ve been taking my notes in cursive, and I can say that I’ve certainly gotten better. Sometimes I notice I rush, but as said in the video focus and not rushing is key.
For me, the computer made me horrible at spelling because of the spelling correction system. I turned to cursive for help, and it worked fine for me. Unless if u want to spell “-_-“ then just write three lines...
I just found this and I want to thank you for leaving in the moments when you add little corrections to letters as you go. I find myself having to do that a lot as I practice and it makes me feel A LOT better about my progress to know that it's seemingly quite normal!
Did you base your personal handwriting off of a particular method? I love those caps, but they definitely don't look like the standard business writing method.
+TXDRMST The basis is Roundhand. That said, I played around with a lot of variations of capital letters. I wanted to have loopy flourishes, legibility, writing ease, and consistency through the hand. Some letters have two or three variants that I switch between just for fun. So the caps are based as much on various calligraphic hand as they are on the cursive styles of Roundhand.
CJ's Creative Studio hey! I'm not sure if you still read notifications but your video really motivated me to practice my cursive because of my terrible handwriting in print. I'm wondering how do I develop my own style, will it be whatever makes me write quickly and in less time?
+Logan Pickering Pick a style you like and copy it diligently. I wrote 1-3 full pages of cursive everyday for a year to get to a point where I wasn't embarrassed to show it. In the years since, I still tweak the letters. Also, whenever I find I'm getting sloppy or too casual about it, maybe once a month or so, I'll sit down and slowly, with focus, write a practice page of text. That helps keep me from developing any bad habits.
Lol, this is one of my most terrible problems, I write cursive letters very slow in our class, that's why on the last 30 seconds where we have to submit our writing, I haven't finish to more sentences which forces me to write in print. Too bad I had deductions :( I'll try improving it
I've been writing in cursive for about 2 years now and when I was just starting I learned that writing the closed letters, like 'e', 'a' , 's', etc, small, and the open letters, like 'p' , 't', 'd' , 'l' , 'k', etc tall and long made the writing look neater. Sorry if it's hard to explain, it would be easier if i could show you all 😝
Andi Carter I am also left handed and I only write with fountain pens. (we had to from our teacher when I was six, that is how we learned how to write, with a fountain pen) It is easy, you just need to get used on it, you need to write with your hand above your letters :) Because I never learned writing with anything else, that is my natural way of writing, even when I write with a pencil or something. I also know lefties that write with their hand underneath their letters, but that feels weird to me. But really, you just need to figure it out, it is really not that difficult :)
irisxxxxxx Usually I write with the paper completely horizontal and underneath what line I'm on...Not sure how well that would go? If it would work, then I would absolutely love to write with a fountain pen! It would make my half-cursive look nice lol
When I write with a pen of any type especially when writing cursive the paper is usually canted at a 45° angle with my hand above the line I'm writing...... God second grade was a bitch when it came to writing.
Andi Carter Umm.. I am actually left handed and I can write with a fountain pen ,pencil and whatever I use ... It is not difficult . But i actually observed that I write above or below the letters ,never next to ...maybe that is what you have to do :) P.S : You do not have to buy a ”special” pen for lefties , you just have to know the tehnique I guess ..
I am a Japanese and I am a translator. When I write English texts, I always write in cursive. I have written it since I started taking English classes back in 1988. I have googled "The Benefits of Writing Cursive" and found that we should write in cursive more. I will continue writing in this traditional method. Thank you for posting this clip.
I find cursive so elegant and I love it, but during my journey in school I ended up modifying it so much that it’s not cursive anymore. I could easily go back, but now I find it “too noisy” to use it to study...In my free time I like to write letters and I want to use my cursive for that💜
Guys it's easy! So I wanted to practice mine but my cursive was really sloppy and I even forgotten how some letters were written but I just wrote a lot everyday (random song lyrics, names, the alphabet) and i could tell it definitely improved. All I did was practice and practice, it's all about patience guys 😉
Simple and straight to the point, with an added visual to maintain interest. Very good video, and keep up the good work! - Practice makes perfect... :P
I still remember when my father told me he learn cursive writing and polish his writing just to send a love letter to my mom when they're in college😂😂😂💖. Well, I'm gonna do this too.
At my school, the 'weird kids' all write in cursive. But it looks awful. I try to read it and they think I can't read cursive. I can, but not when it absolutely sucks.
I learned cursive in Biology class in high school because the subject was boring to me, but the teacher was badass. She wrote in cursive, so I tried to get something enjoyable out of it. Still write cursive today because of her.
+SO AB I found that trying to write with your hand underneath the line helps to prevent this. I've started to write this way and my handwriting has even begun to improve with further practice.
Speed is good, imagine your writing is so slow it can't keep up with thoughts. Years ago, people would have a small recording device, and say each sentence, for typing verbatim by a typist. This is also a skill, and now the typing can be fully computerised. Now I'm old enough to realise that now most essays are marked on handwriting, not the content.
I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina . Here you must always write cursive in school ( except math and1-2 other subjects) so most people get used to reading and writing cursive letters ehen they are wery young and have more or less nice hamdwriting . P.S. : we must learn both latinic and cirilic(acrilic) letters , but almoust always use latinic.

in my high school I'm one of the few kids in my school who actually can read and write cursive, it's sad...
me too
Sam Rea My county simply stopped teaching in right when I was I'm the middle of elementary school. I can read it just fine, but can't write in it. Then again, my handwriting looks like a spastic retarded penguin on fire that's being electrocuted when I'm just writing normally also.
Sad? Righhhht
I can read it but after years of not writing it I can only write a few letters.
Sam Rea
In my school everybody has to write cursive starting when you're grade 3. Also you can't write in short hand unless the teacher allows yiu.
Oh wow your handwriting looks magical.
Dear CJ,
A few months ago, last year I came across this video and I was bedazzled by your penmanship.
I come into it knowing nothing and slowly get better as time goes by and I can't thank you enough for the advice that has made my penmanship, as well as my life so much more beautiful.
nice writing is an art just got a calligraphy set today love it
It would be nice if this was written in your cursive writing 😆
@@mizu-yg8dl yeah I know right hey I heard that you can turn your handwriting into a font and use it in typing, I think I should try that out.

In our school cursive is compulsory

I was surprised bcuz thinking he was older and most likely he was taught cursive in school he was able to read it. it makes me so happy to see so many people learning cursive! i was taught (well, i wasn’t there for the teaching part but i was required to use it) in elementary school and now that i’m in high school it’s definitely payed off. my cursive honestly isn’t much more neat than my normal print but it always makes me enjoy writing notes for school because i feel like i am some old important person, haha
but hey!! best wishes to all that want to learn cursive! for a lot of people it’s easier to use once you get the gist of it, and for some it’s not; either way, have fun with your handwriting!
Graeme Geldenhuys i
Yes, i’ve always written with my palm resting on the paper, relying on finger movements rather than hand/wrist movements. This has affected my cursive as I have trouble writing long words. I’m hoping that changing the way I write cursive will help!
whole shoulder movement is good too!
Make a template of capital, lowercase, and numbers pleasssseee!!!
Marshall Hernandez Do cursive numbers really exist? Things like the number 2 but with a curl and a flourish is what I'd imagine.
Leader Egg, they do. Go to archive.org. Download the Spencerian Compendium PDF and Palmer’s Method PDF.
In Spencerian Compendium, you’ll find many variations of cursive letters. My favourite is the angular hand script.
I’m kinda lucky since my handwriting is already quite cursive-looking, I always get compliments on how “fancy” my handwriting looks lol
Same I just make the "a"s like a keyboard
“Pay attention to what you are doing”
ADHD: LOL what?
I think I was told I have that. I should have paid attention to what he was saying.
I have Bilateral ADHD so it probably wont be much of a problem for me
I’ve always been pretty clueless and unobservant, but I remember it coming as a complete surprise when I realised at uni that most people don’t write in cursive.
I have cursive writing,There're no tricks...good writing is to be cultivated by long practice, its a matter of time
Subha Mukherjee I've sorta gotten used to it by writing cursive on all my assignments and haven been doing it for a few weeks.
It’s not illegal its just not in the curriculum anymore
@@mcmon3y75 Why would it be illegal? That doesn’t make any sense at all it’s just handwriting in different form.
I started using cursive at the beginning of quarantine, and now it physically pains me to write in print. But my cursive is like the print of cursive, kind of like how emails are the “snail mail” of electronic communication.

Have your son write about what interests him! That’s what I plan to have my kids do. 😊

I’m impressed about your handwriting but I’m most impressed how fast you can write. Insane.
I learned to write cursive in the 4th grade. It proved to be useful in middle school and high school because none of my teachers could read it; they just assumed it was fine and gave me full credit.
Great now I'm depressed after I saw your handwriting :(

Ok man I'ma be honest throughout the whole video I wasn't pay attention I was just watching how good ur cursive is 😱
Cursive is also disappearing where I live, but it's still admired and if a person can write in it, they will be praised for their good handwriting!
I write naturally like that, but I love your capitals ! ( sorry if my english's wrong but I'm French haha )
For some reason ever since I started writing in cursive again.... I can't spell -_-
Juan same here
I find Alexa to be best "spell checker" when I'm writing with pen and paper. "Alexa, how the you spell cursive". ;-)
How is it possible to spell "-_-" in cursive? It aint.
CJ's Creative Studio
CJ's Creative Studio hey! I'm not sure if you still read notifications but your video really motivated me to practice my cursive because of my terrible handwriting in print. I'm wondering how do I develop my own style, will it be whatever makes me write quickly and in less time?
xtaylorxboyx you could probably find a way to write fast in cursive that's readable just see what works for you best.
My hadwriting is terrible I
try to slow down it's still terrible. Can you help?
+Logan Pickering Pick a style you like and copy it diligently. I wrote 1-3 full pages of cursive everyday for a year to get to a point where I wasn't embarrassed to show it. In the years since, I still tweak the letters. Also, whenever I find I'm getting sloppy or too casual about it, maybe once a month or so, I'll sit down and slowly, with focus, write a practice page of text. That helps keep me from developing any bad habits.
Search CJ Round hand it will help you
+CJ's Creative Studio What is the angle you tilt your page when writing in cursive?
i can
Lol, this is one of my most terrible problems, I write cursive letters very slow in our class, that's why on the last 30 seconds where we have to submit our writing, I haven't finish to more sentences which forces me to write in print. Too bad I had deductions :( I'll try improving it
I remember cursive was a required lesson when I was in second grade but immediately a year after they changed it
I've been writing in cursive for about 2 years now and when I was just starting I learned that writing the closed letters, like 'e', 'a' , 's', etc, small, and the open letters, like 'p' , 't', 'd' , 'l' , 'k', etc tall and long made the writing look neater. Sorry if it's hard to explain, it would be easier if i could show you all 😝
Ok...I'm left handed...

Yeah and they're a lot more expensive just because they're for lefties...
Andi Carter I am also left handed and I only write with fountain pens. (we had to from our teacher when I was six, that is how we learned how to write, with a fountain pen)
It is easy, you just need to get used on it, you need to write with your hand above your letters :)
Because I never learned writing with anything else, that is my natural way of writing, even when I write with a pencil or something.
I also know lefties that write with their hand underneath their letters, but that feels weird to me.
But really, you just need to figure it out, it is really not that difficult :)
irisxxxxxx
Usually I write with the paper completely horizontal and underneath what line I'm on...Not sure how well that would go?
I agree .Don’t lose this beautiful art .Everybody has a own writing ,that is fantastic .
