When doing calligraphy your pens are only designed to go down and to the right. If you go up and to the left it will damage the pen. That’s also why you felt the scratching and why it felt like it was digging. Also you have to hold the pen at a certain angle so that the ink flows well.
Jason Tay ok I was just stating what I know and what I was taught. Thanks for the correction. I know that if I don’t hold my pen to where it will touch the paper the entire time “the angle of the pen” I will get a digging sensation and a scratching feeling. :))

Also a result in too much ink was the droplets of the ink on the paper, *DONT USE TOO MUCH* 4. When starting, use lined paper or just make your own lines, it helps you to know how long the fancy curves need to be and where to stop (I just recommend it for beginners but you don’t have to use it if it doesn’t help) I hope this helps.. and great video!

When he said, “To my dearest...” I genuinely thought he was gonna do the thing from the beginning of the movie The Hobbit, where Bilbo is an old man and is beginning the story of his adventure and starts with, “My dearest Frodo. Although I can proudly say that I have told you the truth about my adventures, I may not have told you, ... ALL OF IT...” (and then comes PERSONALLY MY favorite part,) “- it began, well it began as you’d expect! ... In a hole in the ground. There lived, - A HOBBIT!...” GOSH I love that movie!
Thank you for the breath of fresh air during my quest to find a way to sign my name on my art pieces. And even tho your video didn't help me find my answer of how to make an unusual, unforgettable letter "J", you did give me a push to try lettering courses again and follow the damn steps. Haha. Not only am I losing hope on making "Joyce" look cool painted somewhere 50 yrs from now, I am also contending with being a left-hander who tries real hard not to smear ink everywhere, and, i am still not in control of moving my whole arm while writing/drawing, rather I'm still trapped within the limitations of the wrist movement. I guess I should be glad that lettering and drawing is not my sellable art field. Just my passion. Thanks again.
It was fun to watch, reminded me of when I was 6 years old and I found my mother's handwriting material and asked her to teach me, she learned calligraphy when I was still a baby. I like to practice calligraphy to this day, it's relaxing.

Can I just say, this is amazing!? I'm going, to be honest, a long-time goal of mine is to learn and become good at calligraphy, and looking for videos on how to do it can be overwhelming so it was really wonderful to stumble across this. Not only was it enlightening and lighthearted but it was incredible to see the skill Jazza learned in this process and the letter at the end made my week! Not only is it in an old lit form with modern touches which I am now obsessed with in addition to old lit, but also the way you wrote it to the viewers is just gold!XD thank you so much for making my day, I have been going through some very thought times lately and this is exactly what I needed!
Such precision Such grace Such beauty Such minimum Such Such Such alphabetical order Such aesthetics Such talent Such Jazza-y Such calligraphy Such I'm out of words... ~Fin~
It is amazing how such a skilled artist like Jazza can struggle with calligraphy, since you would imagine that it should be just as simple for him to do as making lines for a drawing, but it's not. It takes a lot of practice and the guy totally nailed that. Congratulations with your calligraphy practice and evolution buddy.
That's actually pretty good for your first try I would recommend learning how to hold your pen better and possibly adding some Arabic gum to your ink to make it a bit thicker cuz it looks really runny. If not you can also try a paintbrush nib instead of a regular nib cuz you are using a color I find that it helps me
Try using a brush pen. It's not necessarily calligraphy, but it's similar. Handlettering is much easier than traditional calligraphy, and it might be a good start :D
Don't worry Jazza, I'm an artist too and my hand writing is worse than yours. My theory is that we trade our hand writing skills for artistic talent, and that anyone who has both has sold their soul to Satan.
Sure, Alexis. Satan's out of the office right now at a Confirmation Party for some new guy on the Supreme Court but I'll be sure to ask him when he gets in on Monday.
This is wonderful for a first attempt-I can tell you're confident of your materials and you're already consistent in your strokes and forms-something that usually comes a lot later! One suggestion if you really did love doing this (and I believed you did, and I'm sincere), with dip pens you need to hold the pen up straighter not like a fountain or a regular pen. It will help with the flow of the ink, and the more of your arm/hand you use, the stronger and more confident the stroke. I really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for the content. I'd been cleared to teach on Udemy and Skillshare, but am not confident at all of videoing, so will take your courses on it. Thank you for the go ahead!
when i was watching this its my birthday so when is saw him drawing a happy birthday .. it just made my day even if its not for me its like jazz and destiny greeting me ... thank you

seeing how much progress could be made if you took the correct foundational steps and the sheer joy of learning process was such an inspiration! Yesterday I finally drew an apple that LOOKED LIKE AN APPLE!
Anyway it was lovely to come back to this video! Thank you!

Bloated though
WTF HOW DID HE JUST BECOME SO GOOD?!
....over the hours of tedious practice he did. Thinkin that had something to do with it.
he's just that good. he clearly didn't fail at the beginning and put in/record days of practice.

That Bob Ross reference gave me life
No mistakes...Only happy accidents
It was fun to watch, reminded me of when I was 6 years old and I found my mother's handwriting material and asked her to teach me, she learned calligraphy when I was still a baby. I like to practice calligraphy to this day, it's relaxing.
Challenge idea? Maybe... can you try drawing with the calligraphy pen and ink and see how it turns out?
Let me tell you, drawing with dip pens are a delight.

Your first attempt at calligraphy is my first attempt at everything at life
It is amazing how such a skilled artist like Jazza can struggle with calligraphy, since you would imagine that it should be just as simple for him to do as making lines for a drawing, but it's not.

If not you can also try a paintbrush nib instead of a regular nib cuz you are using a color I find that it helps me
His excitement over his progress is precious, wholesome, and makes me smile
Try using a brush pen. It's not necessarily calligraphy, but it's similar. Handlettering is much easier than traditional calligraphy, and it might be a good start :D
Tombow brush markers can be good ? I want to buy some of them to try it
Or do you have a favorite brand for brush pen ?
@@prenomnom9500 I've personally heard that those work really well for lettering. 😊

Don't worry Jazza, I'm an artist too and my hand writing is worse than yours. My theory is that we trade our hand writing skills for artistic talent, and that anyone who has both has sold their soul to Satan.
Satan's reply to KittenSparkles Cute: "True. And you still owe me 10 bucks."
@@HMFan2010 hey can you ask Satan if I still owe him 20? Coz I forgot how much debt I have left.
Sure, Alexis. Satan's out of the office right now at a Confirmation Party for some new guy on the Supreme Court but I'll be sure to ask him when he gets in on Monday.

It was terrible by calligraphy standards, but when looking with an artistic eye that terrible-ness was pleasing, seemingly patterned yet patternless.
Speaking of parchment paper you should try drawing a fantasy map I've been doing it lately and it's really fun
I have been doing the same thing too recently. Honestly it's pretty fun to do.
