In highschool I had a calligraphy set which walked through the basics of how to form letters and holding the pen. Then I stopped using regular ball point pens for about the rest of the year to switch to a cartridge based calligraphy fountain pen for all of my notes and assignment and stuff. That practice really helped.

It is amazing how such a skilled artist like Jazza can struggle with calligraphy, since you would imagine that it should be just as simple for him to do as making lines for a drawing, but it's not. It takes a lot of practice and the guy totally nailed that. Congratulations with your calligraphy practice and evolution buddy.

@Rawan Kaiksow well I write fast and my writing is like I can see the writing normally but others can...... Does that mean I have my own style of writing?!
That's actually pretty good for your first try I would recommend learning how to hold your pen better and possibly adding some Arabic gum to your ink to make it a bit thicker cuz it looks really runny. If not you can also try a paintbrush nib instead of a regular nib cuz you are using a color I find that it helps me
Try using a brush pen. It's not necessarily calligraphy, but it's similar. Handlettering is much easier than traditional calligraphy, and it might be a good start :D
Thank you for the breath of fresh air during my quest to find a way to sign my name on my art pieces. And even tho your video didn't help me find my answer of how to make an unusual, unforgettable letter "J", you did give me a push to try lettering courses again and follow the damn steps. Haha. Not only am I losing hope on making "Joyce" look cool painted somewhere 50 yrs from now, I am also contending with being a left-hander who tries real hard not to smear ink everywhere, and, i am still not in control of moving my whole arm while writing/drawing, rather I'm still trapped within the limitations of the wrist movement. I guess I should be glad that lettering and drawing is not my sellable art field. Just my passion. Thanks again.
Hey, Jazza. Just stumbled across your video. Nice work in the short time you had to master the art. The primary difference between handwriting and calligraphy is the "ductus," or the manner in which letters are formed. While you might be used to writing an "o" with a quick squiggle of your fingers and wrist, a calligraphic "o" generally takes two strokes, starting anywhere from the 10-12 o'clock position and drawing the left and right strokes down to the base of the letter. This prevents the nib (especially the pointy crowquills) from stabbing into the paper like a hypodermic needle. And when working with crowquills, one does not use them as one uses a ballpoint pen (pressing to make 3 carbon copies). The tip of the nib should BARELY touch the paper's surface, allowing it to glide over the paper and not mimic the scalpel of a foot doctor trying to extract a plantar wart from someone's heel. Also: watch the arm movement in the opening video. That fluid motion comes from the shoulder, not the elbow or wrist, and as such results in those smooth, flowing loops and embellishments. All in all, I'd give you a B+ for your final "Happy Birthday." BTW, your first attempt at writing "Jazza" (4:06-4:35) is really very good. It has a certain uniformity and rhythm to it, both of which are critical for successful calligraphy. I'll be sending you the mailing list for my wedding so you can address ALL my envelopes!!!
Hey, Jaychelle. I was a little worried people might think "who the heck is THIS guy?" so I'm glad you took the comment as it was intended. Just to clarify: I'm an artist myself and have been doing calligraphy since I was about 16 (40 or so years). The "B+" came from my experience as a graphic designer instructor and a day after posting my comment I thought to myself: "he isn't looking for a grade; he want to inspire others to try new things." I binge-watched I don't know HOW many Jazza vids the day I viewed the calligraphy episode and have to give him tons of credit for trying all kinds of new art forms, techniques, materials, and media. Not only is he a good (and fearless) artist, he's a good comedian (which I'm sure is NOT his intent), and in case he ever gets tired of creating art, he can always go into stand-up. Keep on creating, Jazza!
It's wonderful to show the progress part of the "I try" hobby. You have to be willing to be bad at something before you can be any good. That starting point was so nice to see!
well this turned out to be a very appropriate video since today is the day that the little baked bean comes into the world cause I'm sure today would be her birthday, Happy Birthday Baked Bean ^-^

Challenge idea? Maybe... can you try drawing with the calligraphy pen and ink and see how it turns out?
Let me tell you, drawing with dip pens are a delight.
Watching him stop himself from throwing away that paper for the sake of tracking progress was painfully relatable lol
That "Happy Birthday" he initially did looks like a ransom note. LOL!!
His excitement over his progress is precious, wholesome, and makes me smile

When he said, “To my dearest...” I genuinely thought he was gonna do the thing from the beginning of the movie The Hobbit, where Bilbo is an old man and is beginning the story of his adventure and starts with, “My dearest Frodo. Although I can proudly say that I have told you the truth about my adventures, I may not have told you, ... ALL OF IT...” (and then comes PERSONALLY MY favorite part,) “- it began, well it began as you’d expect! ... In a hole in the ground. There lived, - A HOBBIT!...” GOSH I love that movie!

It was fun to watch, reminded me of when I was 6 years old and I found my mother's handwriting material and asked her to teach me, she learned calligraphy when I was still a baby. I like to practice calligraphy to this day, it's relaxing.

I came across this video about 6 months ago and it really inspired me. I am finally learning how to draw after year of regretting not doing it in school.
seeing how much progress could be made if you took the correct foundational steps and the sheer joy of learning process was such an inspiration! Yesterday I finally drew an apple that LOOKED LIKE AN APPLE!

@@Gorgun2010 A quill is another name for a feather, it's just more widely used when talking about writing

I love art so much. To see someone create such beautiful art and then get excited about writing their name is amazing
HMFan2010 I didn’t read the whole comment but I think it’s nice
Am I the only one who thinks his first attempt was good personally I liked it
yea, the droplets looked like designs lmao

It was terrible by calligraphy standards, but when looking with an artistic eye that terrible-ness was pleasing, seemingly patterned yet patternless.
Good thing you started with blue ink instead of red
It's wonderful to show the progress part of the "I try" hobby. You have to be willing to be bad at something before you can be any good. That starting point was so nice to see!
