So glad it was helpful! You may also need to clean your nib again after touching it with your fingertips, so keep that in mind =)

Very informative video. Here's a Quick Nib Cleaning Trick I Never Exposed, taught to me by my H.S. Commercial Art Instructor in the early 80's: Apply a little Saliva to your index and thumb. (Yes, real spit) Then rub on new nibs to remove the oil/coating. Sounds Gross, but the acid in our saliva will naturally breakdown the wax coating in seconds. Then do a quick water, napkin, ink, napkin cleaning and Ta Da, Start Lettering! (or some may want to spend extra time cleaning each nib prior with detergent) Good Luck.

This is actually now my favorite way to clean new nibs, because it's the laziest hah =)

Great tutorial. Wonderful insights and attitude. My own laziness tells me, after watching how much work it took to clean that nib, to actually stand up, walk to a sink and rub the thing down with a drop or two of dishwashing liquid and rinse quickly under warm water. I would expect that to work first try. and actually give a better cleaning. Different strokes for different folks! Peace and thanks!

I also found it frustrating and unnecessary. Fifty odd years ago I was instructed to clean off my nibs by bathing them in a cigarette lighter flame, 2-3 seconds is all it takes. Doesn't even get uncomfortably hot. Started watching as getting interested again after a break of many years.

Hi! I just ordered a bottle of Suma ink and arrived a week before the delivery date, so...I was not home the day it arrived and it was frozen when I received it. (I llive in Canada). Now it is thawed but I haven't opened it yet or try it. I think I'm a little scared to find out. Do you think It is still good? I listened to some of your videos before but did not have what I needed, so now that I have my oblique pen and Zebra G nibs and suma ink, my HP premium paper and a few other things, I'm ready to go. I started praticing with a book (kit) I bought at Costco's a couple of years ago and I love it! Now I want to listen to all of you your videos.

Thanks so much! Will have to DL on my desktop tomorrow. Do you think the fountain pens/nibs have a place for calligraphy, or should I just go ahead and buy this equipment... what do you think about brush calligraphy? Thanks again for your worksheets.

I needed this video. I've just opened up my brand new set, I have the ink and nib you mentioned and turns out I had the nib lined up all wrong. It's working better now. Thank you. I went to grab the worksheet too. x Marieke

Understand the placement of the nib - what is the proper/best way to hold the oblige holder? Am I okay with holding the holder comfortably as long as the nib is pointing straight up?

Thank you so much for the amazing beginner video. I have been following you in IG for a while. Finally, I wanna give copperplate calligraphy a try.
May I ask if I can use Bristol paper to practice or not? Since I have been doing modern calligraphy (brush pens) for a few years, I understand the thin up, thick down concepts very well.
    Thanks again.

My nib is not smooth enough. I tried cleaning it a couple of times and it's still not improving. During flourish, some parts (especially upward strokes) don't work. Can you please help me understand the problem? I am using nikko G.

I don't own any branded nibs but have you tried cleaning it with an old toothbrush and toothpaste? I also had problems making the ink stick but the one that finally fixed it for me is pipe cleaner. Soaked them in there for a few minutes and then scrubbed it clean.

Hi. I've been writing with fountain pens for a few years. I also have a couple of dip pens. However, why are there no calligraphy pens that take converters? Why are they all dip pens?

Can someone please tell me where can I find or buy some printable copperplate pointed pen calligraphy words/sentiments worksheets. I’ve done my lower and upper case letters, and now want to practice spacing and connection. I checked Etsy, but only found alphabet ones. Thanks ahead! :)

Just starting your video and I am new to calligraphy. I have been practicing copperplate with videos and such for abut 3-4 weeks. Sumi ink was a big difference for me. Before I tried India ink and got a ton of bleeding. The sumi ink is way better. The one thing I hate is the smell of it. The other comment I have is the speedball pen holder. I started with that and read that it’s actually better to start with an adjustable nib holder such as metal. I just bought a cheap oblique holder on amazon. I think I paid like 10 for it. It made a huge difference. I tend to push hard and this absorbs some of my extra pressure. So if u notice blobs or bleeding and u d doing everything else right try a holder with a metal flange. I love the tip she recommends too. I tried a bunch of other recommended ones but that one is my fav. Thanks for making the video.

Couldn't we just wash the nib in dish soap before inserting it? All my nibs are second hand so I've never had to clean one.

Found you on Instagram!! Love your story and just saw your post on getting the Glenmorangie event which brought me here. Thanks for this very detailed beginner pointed pen video. I hope to attempt pointed pen soon (right now I just use brush pens) and this video really helped. Thanks again!

Do nibs that have dimples on top need a reservoir? I bought the cheapest manga and calligraphy nibs I can find and subjected them to the same cleaning torture. The manga nibs are already coating fine but the calligraphy nibs not so much. Like sometimes it'll stick and then all the ink gets dumped on the first stroke.

My upstrokes are ending up as thick as my downstrokes after dipping the nib (newbie friendly G nib). I'm trying to be as light touch as possible, but I just can't seem to get those super thin lines right after dipping. Any suggestions?

you can use a Tombow ABT Dual brush pen or a Koi brush pen.

Could be a number of things, such as the ink consistency and paper quality. But it could also be too much ink on the nib, so try dipping less farther in or wiping on the lip of the jar before writing

If the nib was cleaned better with Dawn and water or acetone it would hold more ink, and take less time.
