Kerfed MDF Slot Port Subwoofer Box - Paint and Carpet Combo

- Bend and curve a fresh 3/4" MDF sheet and turn it into a beautiful L-port for vented car subwoofer box of a small but powerful 8 inch subwoofer.

This small but beefy subwoofer has a very nice Kevlar cone and weighs about 7 kilos, very heavy for a small eight inches subwoofer. And is pre-wired with 10 gauge cables in each voice coils.
Ok, let's start the project by shopping a fresh sheet of 18mm MDF (medium density fiberboard) at a local home depot. Calculated and designed the box dimensions against the woofer's parameters using Bass Box 6 Pro, updated to the latest version. I've calculated to have a target box resonance of 47Hz just to give justice of the woofer's Fs which is about 54Hz. For the schematics and dimensions, proceed to TinkerCad on this link - www.tinkercad....
At 01:00 mark, cut 12 kerfs with 10mm gap distance in between them. Then wet before bending to prevent the board from cracking. We will use the old wood glue in strengthening the kerfs together and apply generous amount of No nail all purpose adhesive to further strengthen the kerfs. Once dried, cut 45 degree angle on every edge of the port to promote smooth air movement within the sound box.
Glue and nail all panels together and let dry. Use the table saw in cutting a little notch on the front baffle sides. This notch will be the place to tuck in the carpet seam for a more seamless look.
Paint and cover the rest of the box a charcoal black carpet. Use 4mm T-nuts and Carbon steel Allen head bolts in securing the woofer.
Once finished, test and measure the subwoofer system using Dayton Audio DATS v3 to verify final system impedance, which is about 41Hz. Not bad for a fresh, out-of-the box brand new 8 inches woofer!

@@chrclmnky most of the builds I see do double baffle with a top mount by just doubling the entire layer. I prefer it this way so as not to need to do that

Hey man, super nice build, I have a question ! why are you screwing the screws first, unscrew it and then screwing it again ?? :)
Thanks. Nice question. I need the T Nut to bite under the MDF so it won't move when I attach the subwoofer. This is very important. You don't want the T Nut to fall loose when fastening the subwoofer.
There is a better alternative, use threaded inserts. They are a piece of mind versus T nuts.

I need some advice....I am wanting a single 8 in a box for my fusion, just to add to the factory Sony system for some punchy mid/low bass. I listen to all kinds of music. What configuration would you recommend? Love your builds, keep going man!
Thanks for watching. A ported box tuned to 40-45Hz for your 8" sub will do very good. This box has a verified tuning of 41Hz.

Not necessary for 400w and below. This one's a 500w and can peak to 1200w.

@@abdomination Yes there were some contacted me through email and I did them calculations and provided schematics for their preferred subwoofers in a particular vehicle in exchange some Paypal dollars. Most just wanted free. Hehe, plotting the schematics and calculating boxes will take me about 4 hours total, and others still complain why not for free. 😁

Dual 2Ω in parallel is 1Ω.

Just the normal spiral router bit in cutting the speaker hole. And just the normal roundover bit in cutting the edges. Router bits are sold on almost every online marketplaces.

@@mehmetsabrialtan460they usually work in between 3-8 cubic feet cabinets you can find simple enclosure calculators and port length calculators, but try to find the t/s parameters so you can make it good sounding 👍

They were bought locally and also available mostly everywhere. Just lookup M4 allen head bolts. And M4 T nuts.

Anywho, I just got this plane MDF slotted vent. I don’t like it and I was just in brain surgery and my sister found a “birch box, Kerf vent” I didn’t get to see it and once I got out of my 8th brain surgery and got to see it, I got a plain mdf slotted box. So I’m a little upset. I just want a single or possibly a duel but for right now just a single 12 with a kerf vent. It’s going in my Toyota. Let me get your Facebook or some type of info to go over this box in detail if that’s ok?
