I agree with you 100%. Two reasons to go 38 is 1. A heavy rider. 2.Your a Beast rider on the mountain. As for me at 165#, am happy with 36 on RaceFace 30off-set Wheels.
@@brandonandrews5603 Maybe you're right, but you could say that 200+ could be considerred a heavy bench...that covers 200-299... I can't bench 299... haha jk man :)

about to upgrade my 2015 trek slash 8 from a 2016 fox 36 factory to the new 38 factory. i went to a bike shop just to press on the fork a bit and the difference between my 2016 36 and the 38 is unreal. my current fork is awesome and has handled everything i throw at it, more or less, but on big jumps it feels like jumping into a pool of water. theres a ton of stiction at the very top of the stroke and then there's very little support throughout the rest of the stroke once you break thru that initial bite. the 38 had literally 0 stiction and i could compress it with one arm but it still felt like it had a ton of support
My 38 is showing up today. I’m 6’1 and 240lbs and ride pretty aggressive. I have the 36 on two of my bikes and have been pretty happy but I’m excited to go to the 38 and see the difference. Thanks for the great content!
@@Tr_Fast Lol, Not yet but it’s been a significant improvement over the 36. I really like the stiffness and the way I can push it into the corners. I put my old 36 on my sons bike so he got an upgrade too. Good times!
I'm 210-215 (depends on how many BBQs I've been to that week) and I rode a 32 until 2014, then a 34 until this year. I've lived in the Rockies, and North Vancouver in that time. I just got on a 36 (Capra Pro Race), and while I feel the difference, I haven't felt under forked since the 32, in the slightest. I'm not sure I'd switch to a 38... Feels too close to the 40 I run on the DH... but who knows, maybe some day. Great review.
Almost switched my Decoy pro race pre order over to the Decoy Shred pre order simply because it had the newest fork. Glad I didn't if it's only an upgrade for larger riders
Sweet video dude!!!! .... as an even larger rider than yourself, it's nice seeing product feedback from someone who isn't any heavier that a piece of A4 paper for once, as not all of us fit small to medium frames with 25PSI in out shocks or forks! (think I might subscribe!!)
I wanted this fork so badly at 6'8" 270lbs, but my fuel ex 8 came with 130mm and I thought the jump to a 150 air shaft would've been too much geo change. I went with a 140mm 36. When they make a 140 air shaft for that 38, I'll get one. Your video is awesome.
Thanks man! The 36 at 140 is perfect for that bike and still beastly! Hopefully next year we’ll see that 38 go to some lower travels for us big guys though. 🤞
Need to balance that gimbal a touch. Might want to consider changing to 4:3 ratio with no stabilzation on the GoPro if you are going to run a chest gimbal too. It will give you more options when editing. Great Video man 🤙
What are the disadvantage of the 38 over the 36? Weight and expense? I have an eMTB with a 36 (Grip) and I weigh 210lbs. For most of my riding it feels more than capable but certain trails in Queenstown push it to the limit and it bottoms out. I'm considering upgrading to a Grip2 or getting a 38.
Great video! Subscribed! I was looking for an honest review, not the press release reviews from a few months ago. Your feedback definitely has me leaning towards this as an upgrade for my Specialized Enduro. Can you maybe do a review on your Super Deluxe Coil at some point?

Hey Sebastien. Yeah I definitely get some slouching if I fill it up. Typically a body, two lenses, and a gorilla pod does it. At first it really bothered me but I got pretty used to it. Best option I’ve found for sure.

My trails are similar to yours but with much more exposed tree roots and tree dense trails here in the Smokey mtns. My comfort level of drops is 4ft. and under. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I love how we basically have the same bike(other than the coil shock, and bar) so any upgrades you put on give me a good sense of whats good...im right at 200 pounds and ive been eyeing this fork. Definitely going on my list once I finish upgrading my DJ and 29er ht! We definitely have similar styles as well, like side hits but also aggressively charging through rock gardens! Thanks for the work put into this video! Almost forgot how did the change in head tube angle and BB height feel going to a longer fork? Specifically climbing?
Nice dude! The Megatower is so rad. I didn’t really notice any difference through out the frame geo. My first pedal on it, I noticed a bit of a height difference up front but I that faded quick. Definitely not on the decent. I also did keep the same offset. I hope that helps 🤙
Thanks for your review! How does it feel off the top? Is it fairly plush in small but tooth shaking chunder? My trails have some consistent half foot to 2 foot hits but there's also a bunch of rock gardens you can just roll/plow thru. I guess very similar to the section you did on your local trail here!
The top of the stoke has a ton of small bump compliance. I would say that’s is the softest part of the stroke. Then it has good ramp moving through the rest of the travel. Definitely the best I’ve ridden by far through the chunder and jank. Really grippy on the roots too. I hope that helps.

Just stumbled upon your channel and just wanna say man you can shred! Definitely subscribing to the channel bro! I just ordered a new 21 Fox 36 for my 150mm travel bike. I’m coming from a Pike and hope I’ll see a big jump in performance. In lighter than you at 180 so hopefully the 36 will be stiff enough. I hope the new 36 feels as good as the 38 does
Hey thanks dude! I really appreciate the support. You’ll love that 36. I’m tellin ya, the grip2 is killer. Especially with some volume reducers in there. You can’t go wrong. 🤘
In the vid the old fork looks like fox 36 performance with the FIT damper (unless you upgraded the cartridge). How much of this is a comparison between the FIT and GRIP dampers?
Good eye Eric! So the model on my Megatower was with a Fit4. My last fork had a Grip2 damper. I’m familiar with the difference between the two dampers. This review is more about the structure. While that aids the performance of the Grip2, in my opinion. Although, the shim stack is this fork creates a very unique feel compared to the 36’s Grip2. Just bro science though. 🤷♂️ 🤘
Nice video super ride mate congrats new sub. I have 29 er yt capra with a rc2 cartridges fox 36 with 170mm travel. Im pretty big 220 lbs and i wanna buy fox 38, but the rs r made the zeb for much lower price so i dont know what do you think?
Thanks dude! I can’t say anything against the Zebb sense I haven’t ridden it but I’m sure it’s also a great unit. I would imagine, the Fox is a bit more progressive if you really get down to the nitty gritty but that’s just my guess. Upgrading to the Grip2 damper alone is a huge upgrade. You couldn’t go wrong investing into a 38 or a Zebb.
Wow, great riding! 🚵♂ The colorway of that Fox 38 fork is absolutely stunning! 😍 Thinking of getting one myself to upgrade from my trusty Lyrik. How do you have your Fox 38 set up? Would love to know your settings for rebound, compression, and air pressure. Keep shredding! 🤘
Always wondered why almost all the pro enduro and DH riders used fox and had either 36’s or 40’s and not the RockShox lyrik or boxxer. Then I tried out a fox...
Thanks man! Not at all.. I’m not very critical on weight if it provides the performance in return though. If anything I noticed the geo change a bit from the bump to 170, but that faded quickly.
Sweet man looks rad! Great work on intro vid of bike, very stylie. Color looks nice with your bike, not usually a fan of lighter color forks but it looks good. I’m a bigger dude and I’m very interested in sizing up. Did you notice a difference in weight?
Thanks dude! Tried to do something a bit different this time. At first I wasn’t totally sold on the color, but now I love it. As for the weight, not at all! I’m not crazy about weight change, within reason, but I didn’t notice it at all.
For me personally, yes. I’m sure there are people doing it, but I can’t see much of a reasonable gain from it. I think it would just be a bit too high in the front. It’s a fun idea for sure. But I think the pedaling position would be rough and could get weird.
@@loamtroopers Well however Santa Cruz official website says Megatower can actually support a fork up to 180mm travel. Maybe it is okay, just the front would be a bit high though.
im about your size id guess, what wheels do you like and also rear shock. i plan to get a fox 38 and wheels and a shock to work with my size and ability
I love my Santa Cruz Reserve rims laced to I9 hydra hubs. As for the rear shock, I’m running the Rockshox super deluxe ultimate coil and it works well with the megatower.
Hey man nice review and smooth riding! I just ordered the same fork for my wreckoning and ya, was hard to find!! I’m about your size so was happy to see a review addressing the rider vs fork spec. I’d love to chat about setup
Ahh, Nice. Lots of new riders up there this year. I used to live in Meyers. Just had fun up there last week, but saw so many people even up near Armstrong pass. Have fun, nice video!
I got the orange ones on my new embt there i need to see whats inside how many spacers according to the fox chart it should be 3 vol spacers in an evol embt fox 38 but im just sinking right down into them but sags not set and psi is only at 100 I'm heavier than you 270 280lbs but never had a fox air fork before i was always riding DH in my day but been off a bike 18 yrs now so everything has changed its going to be like learning to ride a bike again probably 😂
Thanks dude! I appreciate that. I run 123psi. Rebound: HSR - 2 clicks from closed LSR - 1 click from closed Compression: HSC - 4 clicks from open LSC - 9 clicks from open With 3 volume reducers
@@loamtroopers thats very close to the basesetup from the fox tuning guide. My pistachio fork needs a bit more rebound :) But its a sick fork, I tell ya. My mind was blown away by the performance in the rough stuff.
@@loamtroopers So Im running a 100 psi with like 88-90 kilo (198lbs) bike gear ready. Since I am not using full travel I went down 1 click LSC and 2 clicks HSC
That trail looks rad! Great video and review. What kind of rear shocks are you running? I’m looking to upgrade to a 38 myself but wondering if I should upgrade rear as well. I currently have a Fox 36 and Fox float DPS and I’m really happy with it. But I’m thinking the bigger the better? Fox float X or X2? 🤙
I am 5’10 athletic 185lbs in my 40’s. Debating between a slightly used 2020 Ibis Ripmo w/Fox 36 or keeping my current order that comes w/Fox38. Going the used route will save me $1500. Not sure if I need the fox 38 for my style of riding, can you help? I can ride pretty much any bike park trail, just not ripping down them and catching big air like the more advanced riders or carving up turns(not yet). I prefer picking my lines but have fun hitting drops up to 4’ on occasion and really enjoy the longer 10+mi switchback trails in the smokies. As much as I try to pick my lines, I am generally crashing through endless rocks and roots.
Great video pal!! I have a yeti 2020 sb140 and wanted to do the 38 and I’m new to this but I’m confused with the height or leverage? Will it change my angle of the bike or angle ? I’ll be using the bike for all mountain and a few climbs and peddling 🤷♂️😫 I’m 190 pounds .
If you raise the travel in the front, it will cause the seat tube angle to be typically a degree slacker. Which will result is the seating position while pedaling to not be as optimal. But, in my opinion, the benefits from the bigger fork are worth the sacrifice! I hope that helps 🤙
38 Looks amazing and great video dude! Can I ask what wheelset you're running and what tyre pressures you go with. Looks like you're a similar size rider to myself
Thanks bro! I appreciate that. I do have a video on my wheel set up and the reason why I run them, so consider checking that out. I run 29psi typically but if I have Cush core in, I can confidently run lower. Double down Maxxis casings front and rear.
Im trying to save up for this because my current lyrik creaks and pops underneath my weight (110kg) and it doesn't feel stiff and I feel like I'm going to crack my steerer tube or something
Curious to know your settings. I've just got my 170mm 38 and my hands were beaten badly after the first run! I was using the suggested settings for my 125kg weight (275ish lb) and have changed the pressure anywhere between 140PSI and 90PSI. Appreciate any tips!
How many volume spacers did you add? How have you changed the tune since the vid? At 240 lbs have you kept the 200mm centerlines w code r setup? -230lbs megatower rider
My coil recommendation doesn’t 100% come from rider size. Although, in my opinion, air shocks lose a lot of their perks with riders our size. That’s why I try to always go for a coil when I can. I feel like they are much more consistent under that much weight. There is pros and cons to both. Coils can also be harsh in the small bumps compared to air. I really couldn’t recommend one over another without more information. It’s fun to experiment though.
I think if you’re really passionate about upgrading. Do it. Especially if it gets you stoked to get out and ride. But I wouldn’t expect as much as a difference. It wouldn’t be a bad move, just maybe not as optimal as it would be for a heavy rider is all. Just open those compressions up and give it hell 🤘
For your size and the bigger 29er, you can shred it fast. From the video, I felt like you gonna always wash out on that dry sand but you're not. The Minion is awesome too.
looking to get new fork for my specialized enduro 2020 180 pounds and like to go fast and aggressive you think 36 better for me than 38 or its worth upgrading? thanks
I think you’re not going to notice a big difference with the 38 at 180lbs unless you’re riding very aggressive trails. It wouldn’t be a disservice to you though. The way the 38 is tuned, is just meant to have a lot of weight on it. The 2021 36 is a great option as well. Hope that helps. 🤙
Nice video and good comparison. From what you described, I got the impression the 38 feels closer to a 40 than a 36. Not sure if you have ridden a 40 but it I would be interested in your opinion.
What are your settings? I’m 6’1 240 and yeah we are not the majority 😂. How many volume spacers and clicks out you run? I’m probably putting a 38 on my mega tower this week
Yea sure! You’d want to probably accommodate to that with a 29r wheel up front. Then it’ll be a mullet bike. Depends on the rear travel but it’ll just change the frame geo a bit.
@@loamtroopers Thank you so much for your kind reply. One more question, what happens if i use 27.5er wheelset with that 29er fork (considering 27.5er frame and everything else remains same).?
To be completely honest, I’m not sure. I just would imagine it’s not recommended because the geometry of the bike is designed for that particular wheel size. If you had a bike that was a 29r and you put 27.5 wheels on it, I’d imagine the BB alone, would be almost to the ground on bottom out. Not 100% sure on those details though.
The ending hahah 😂
Little banger for the ending 😂

Good eye Eric! So the model on my Megatower was with a Fit4. My last fork had a Grip2 damper. I’m familiar with the difference between the two dampers. This review is more about the structure. While that aids the performance of the Grip2, in my opinion. Although, the shim stack is this fork creates a very unique feel compared to the 36’s Grip2. Just bro science though. 🤷♂️ 🤘
@@loamtroopers All good. I was hoping of the differences were due to GRIP2 since I was considering upgrading a FIT4 damper to it. :)
Hey man i was wondering what rebound;compreesion; and psi u were running in this video?
Have you ever rode a DVO OYNX and if so how does it compare
cool fork good luck .. how's Dr it is air.. why not go with a spring fork
Thanks!
Great video! What about for someone 175 lbs and more of a line picker than a smasher? I'm thinking it might feel a little heavy?
I think a 36 would be right up your ally!
I bet it climbs like a Honda Civic. Looks like it mobs downhill. Corral is the perfect trail for that fork 🚀
Haha between me and that bike. Definitely a Honda Civic. But whatever it takes to get to the downhill right? 🤷♂️ 🤘
Awesome video!
Thanks, Nick! I appreciate that 👊
Sweet trail! Where is this?
Little dusty but it’s a hoot for sure!
S. Lake Tahoe, Ca.
Did you go up on travel when you got your 38?
Good info thanks!
🤘🤘
Wow, great riding! 🚵♂ The colorway of that Fox 38 fork is absolutely stunning! 😍 Thinking of getting one myself to upgrade from my trusty Lyrik. How do you have your Fox 38 set up? Would love to know your settings for rebound, compression, and air pressure. Keep shredding! 🤘
Always wondered why almost all the pro enduro and DH riders used fox and had either 36’s or 40’s and not the RockShox lyrik or boxxer. Then I tried out a fox...
Fox definitely makes a killer product. You get what you pay for 🤙
Great video bud! Do you notice the weight difference on climbs?
Thanks man! Not at all.. I’m not very critical on weight if it provides the performance in return though. If anything I noticed the geo change a bit from the bump to 170, but that faded quickly.
Nose bonk into the trail earned my subscription, from one bmxer to another.... keep shredding 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Haha! Thanks homie! I appreciate the support. 🤙
Do you think 180mm on the front would be too much travel on Megatower?
For me personally, yes. I’m sure there are people doing it, but I can’t see much of a reasonable gain from it. I think it would just be a bit too high in the front. It’s a fun idea for sure. But I think the pedaling position would be rough and could get weird.
@@loamtroopers Well however Santa Cruz official website says Megatower can actually support a fork up to 180mm travel. Maybe it is okay, just the front would be a bit high though.
What music did you use for the bike edit?
hey i liked the video but i am asking what's your weight(with no bad means just for my curiosity)
250lbs I believe in that video. I’m a big guy
What trail is this? I need to come to tahoe looks sick..
Corral Loop. Very rad trails all through the basin.
@@loamtroopers it looks dope! Hopefully i'll make that way in a month or so.
Let me know. Always down to rip
Loam Troopers MTB that would be dope!!!
Hola!
I love the pistachio color looks awesome .. nice video bro ..
Thanks dude! I appreciate that 🤘
im about your size id guess, what wheels do you like and also rear shock. i plan to get a fox 38 and wheels and a shock to work with my size and ability
I love my Santa Cruz Reserve rims laced to I9 hydra hubs.
As for the rear shock, I’m running the Rockshox super deluxe ultimate coil and it works well with the megatower.
how did I not know about you guys, I live in north lake and have been searching for a fellow local RUclipsr for a while 😂
Let’s link up sometime. 🤘
@@loamtroopers that would be sick! just followed you on insta so shoot me a dm next time you're up here!
Hey man nice review and smooth riding! I just ordered the same fork for my wreckoning and ya, was hard to find!! I’m about your size so was happy to see a review addressing the rider vs fork spec. I’d love to chat about setup
Nice man! You’ll love it.
Love riding South Lake. At 170lbs I still like the 38. Hit up roads while your there
Lucky I’m local to south lake so toads is home. Good to know the 38 is still good at 170lbs. Cheers 🤘
Ahh, Nice. Lots of new riders up there this year. I used to live in Meyers. Just had fun up there last week, but saw so many people even up near Armstrong pass. Have fun, nice video!
What are your compression and rebound settings?
New here! Nice Fox and video! 🤘
Hey! Welcome. Thanks for the support. I appreciate it 🤘🤘
I got the orange ones on my new embt there i need to see whats inside how many spacers according to the fox chart it should be 3 vol spacers in an evol embt fox 38 but im just sinking right down into them but sags not set and psi is only at 100 I'm heavier than you 270 280lbs but never had a fox air fork before i was always riding DH in my day but been off a bike 18 yrs now so everything has changed its going to be like learning to ride a bike again probably 😂
hey man thanks for the cool video. How much psi are you running and whats your base set up clickwise?
Thanks dude! I appreciate that.
I run 123psi.
Rebound:
HSR - 2 clicks from closed
LSR - 1 click from closed
Compression:
HSC - 4 clicks from open
LSC - 9 clicks from open
With 3 volume reducers
@@loamtroopers thats very close to the basesetup from the fox tuning guide. My pistachio fork needs a bit more rebound :) But its a sick fork, I tell ya. My mind was blown away by the performance in the rough stuff.
Yeah just some minor changes for me. We’ll see what happens as I get more and more miles on it 🤘
@@loamtroopers So Im running a 100 psi with like 88-90 kilo (198lbs) bike gear ready. Since I am not using full travel I went down 1 click LSC and 2 clicks HSC
How much weight difference was noticeable?
Feel heavier?
Feel noticeably heavier for climbing?
Honestly, I didn’t notice any weight difference on the bike. It didn’t even cross my mind when I was riding.
have to remember increasing fork travel makes your head angle .5 degree steaper
I'm 6'5 250 lbs athletic build. I'm getting this fork for my 2020 SWorks Enduro. How many volume spacers did you use?
I added one more to the stack that came in the chamber. I think it was 5 total
Man, this fork is full otta brain but a Megatower?! Com on!!
what trails are those? They look kind of familiar
Corral loop
@@loamtroopers hmm. I guess they just looked familiar. Def not something I've ridden unless MTB project doesn't have it
I am 5’10 athletic 185lbs in my 40’s.
*gets new bolt for stem
Him: “wow this thing feels greaaat”
Have you ever experienced creaky crowns with 36?
I personally have not!
I'm new to mtb I'm gonna buy the polygon d6 do you know of a better bike for that 1500 price range
Looks the same 😩😂
You need a FOX mud guard to perfect this fork.
I know! It would be nice to have one that just screws on. Soon!
Im trying to save up for this because my current lyrik creaks and pops underneath my weight (110kg) and it doesn't feel stiff and I feel like I'm going to crack my steerer tube or something
You’ll definitely enjoy the upgrade!
Btw love the vid man, keep shredding!
I've just started riding technical flowy trails. I'm 6 2 1/2 280lbs. Would you recommend a coil rear shock for my size?
My coil recommendation doesn’t 100% come from rider size. Although, in my opinion, air shocks lose a lot of their perks with riders our size. That’s why I try to always go for a coil when I can. I feel like they are much more consistent under that much weight. There is pros and cons to both. Coils can also be harsh in the small bumps compared to air. I really couldn’t recommend one over another without more information. It’s fun to experiment though.
Gotta add the 1/2
if i am a lighter rider and ride really aggressively, should i get a 38?
I think if you’re really passionate about upgrading. Do it. Especially if it gets you stoked to get out and ride. But I wouldn’t expect as much as a difference. It wouldn’t be a bad move, just maybe not as optimal as it would be for a heavy rider is all. Just open those compressions up and give it hell 🤘
For your size and the bigger 29er, you can shred it fast. From the video, I felt like you gonna always wash out on that dry sand but you're not. The Minion is awesome too.
Haha yeah it’s definitely sandy in the Sierras. The minions are a lifesaver!
I hear that I9 Hydra, love it!
Same! Every time I go ride, I’m stoked on it.
what brand and model is the hip pack that your wearing?
It’s a Evoc Capture 7L
looking to get new fork for my specialized enduro 2020 180 pounds and like to go fast and aggressive you think 36 better for me than 38 or its worth upgrading?
Looks like Mike S is riding a 38 at 170lbs and is enjoying it. I stand corrected!
Nice video and good comparison. From what you described, I got the impression the 38 feels closer to a 40 than a 36. Not sure if you have ridden a 40 but it I would be interested in your opinion.
I have ridden 40s and they are much more plush then the 38. A 40 will provide maximum grip at high speeds while the 38 is the best of both worlds.
What are your settings? I’m 6’1 240 and yeah we are not the majority 😂. How many volume spacers and clicks out you run? I’m probably putting a 38 on my mega tower this week
Can I put a fox 38 fork for 29er in a 27.5er frame?? What difference can it make?
@@loamtroopers Thank you so much 🤙🏽
