Please please please have Doddy give a sort of “MTB Geometry 101” video. I think most people know just enough to make semi-informed decisions about their frame+wheels choices.

Minimal tire clearance is about 1,5mm. How do i know? Running a 26in frame (very stiff XC frame) with 27,5in wheels. So far i have not run into problems.
Also, Kashima: It looks nice, otherwise it's marketing buzz.

I believe the slower breaking of 29er bikes is due to the laws of physics.

#askgmbntech I've recently baught a Calibre triple b but I also own a giant anthem x1 2009. The giant is upgraded and much lighter than my Calibre so it's still going to get used however I feel that I've outgrown the bike. My calibre has 800mm bars and the giant has 660mm bars, will the wider bars make me fit the giant better? And would a shorter stem be able to give it more of a 'trail' feal to the giant? Ta Sam

Ive been riding 29er in South Eastern USA for 12 years. We live in heavily forested areas. Our trails tend to be tight and twisty. Ive never felt I lost anything leaving 26 for 29 but I do feel like Ive gained a ton in ability to roll over stuff that required a ton more finesse on a 26 and massively increased stability at speed of 29. Easy way to understand the stability offered from a 29 is when inflating tubeless tires. After inflation, I spin the wheel parallel to the ground to try and spread out the tubeless fluid. As the wheel and tire rotate, try turning the wheel horizontal to the ground. Its nearly impossible as the wheel rotates quickly. Now try it with a 26 wheel and you easily see what the stability difference of the 29 wheel is.

Why does my non-drive side crank arm keep loosening? I can't tell you the wattage, but I did make sure it was clear of Grease. Is it because my lead foot is non-drive side? should I learn to bunny hop with Drive side in lead? If I go over torque specs on the eagle crank arm the cranks will drag during rotation.

One of the other reasons that Nino likely runs Eagle with a bigger chainring up front is that the chain is more efficient (less power lost) when it is not forced to make tight bends. So it's more efficient to run a large chainring and a large cog than it is to run the same gear ratio in a small chainring and small cog. At the pro level these guys are at, those couple of watts make a difference.

What an absolutely good points about wheel size...I hadn't considered the rolling momentum of the 29 as being likely the attractive part of climbing on a recent 29er demo.
I am on the shorter and lighter end 5'8" 140lbs and feel a 27.5 just fits.
I am most comfortable on a 26er though as I'm still rocking a 2011...ehem Mongoose whilst I save...
I'm not able to demo a 27.5, our local store is against them lol...no idk they don't have any though.
Today during the ride I realized I was so much faster on my bike because it was my bike... small wheels and all.
    I'm going 27.5 i think though

I would imagine the 4 quick-links is due to multiple chain snaps...so well overdue new chain (and probably cassette and chainring if the chain is that worn out). I suppose the snapping could also be due to bad chain-line or something bent. Definitely something hinkey with the drivetrain.

Late with this comment but anyways: Doddy says Kashima coated needs a lot less maintenance then those with black stanchions. Well I do not know if that is only with the black Stanchions. I am riding Fox40's with the silver stanchions (coil Fox40 from 2012). I service my Fox40's once a year. They still performing perfect. So I think this Kashima talk is just marketing..... The simple reason why "Doddy" likes big 29" is that he is a tall dude. I with my 172cm or about 5,6-5,7 feet think that large wheels are too cumbersome/slow when you need to react fast. For the an Optimal bike fit all bike manufactures should drop the 26, 27, or 29" fixed wheel sizes and offer a wide variety of sizes dependent on the size of the biker. For an example look how odd looking a frame becomes in xs or xl sizes. I even am looking to see if there is a way to go down a size like 24" with Plus size tires.

Doddy is spot on about the two wheel sizes and most importantly how the bike fits the rider. I think there is something to be said about making tight turns on switchbacks though. 27.5 may handle this better. I think it greatly depends on where you ride most and rider fit. 29er seems to keep its momentum going with fast rolling tires and also rolls over the bumps better. On my 29er, often on switchback trails I unclip one foot and us it pivot when it makes sense. Since I ma tall I also just like the overall fit.

Hi, I just bought a new bike but I have a question about my disc brake.
When the bike arrived the rear brake was perfectly alligned, but the front pad was rubbing really hard. I fixed that and there was no rubbing.
Today while riding I heard the pad touch the rotor slightly when cornering and leaning the bike while riding fast.
The rotor is not bent, and this does not happen when I ride normally.
It does not slow me down, but I wonder if that is ok to happen.

    • @AnthonyIlstonJones
      @AnthonyIlstonJones 5 лет назад

Sounds like flex in the fork tbh, if it's a single crown fork especially (and with the newer 15mm standards axles, a downgrade from 20mm imo) you are going to get a certain amount of flex in extreme conditions. If you paid thousands of £££s then you would expect this to be minimal and only apparent under very extreme loads, but in the middling priced & cheaper end of the market such flex is more common under load (but nothing like what we used to have to put up with back in the day). I wouldn't worry about it too much, just keep an eye on it & if it gets worse take it back and have a word with your supplier.

  • @PPC4

Eh? Older frames Especially non Carbon frames which are all the rage at the moment have more tyre clearance (+plus tyre frames aside). Not only that many older bikes and indeed cheaper aren't designed to run strictly 1x meaning you have even more tyre clearance. If your riding a steel frame just put the biggest tyre you can in there and off you go as they have smaller dia' tubing and are far tougher.

Cold is not an issue. Just make sure your chain is lubed well. Also, hanging your bike by the front wheel is best. Hi i have mt5 brakes on my trials bike. I have to bleed them often. Mostly just bubble bleed by sticking a seringe in the bleedport. Bit of oil in and get the air out. But the rear brake needs way more attention. And after a full bleed, the lever feels so different then after a full bleed on the front brake, so i always bubble bleed after full bleed (on the rear), when everything is installed back, so the levers will feel the same.
Also i get the feeling air comes in via the piston seals, by sideways piston movement by shocks (up to rear, rear brake gets lot of stress)
They are fine brakes, but need lots of attention

Hey Doddy, you seem to have some good insights on the effects of various geometry changes in mtb's. It would be interesting to see a video about; symptoms of maladjusted geometry to look out for, effects of various geometry changes the rider can make, explanation of the impacts of fixed geometry items (wheel size, seat tube angle, head angle etc).
This information would really help riders determine the range of geometry specs which will suit their style when looking at upgrades.
A good example is handlebar length, rotation, height, angle, thickness, stem length. It's difficult trying to speculate on how changes will affect the characteristics of the bike.
Keep up the great work and thank you.

#askgmbntech hi! I have Shimano hydraulic brakes on my bike and i was wondering if it is ok to use other mineral oil brands in my brakes instead of the shimano oil? I got some mineral oil at the car parts store and i can't see any difference to the original oil (except that the mineral oil i bought is green instead of red...). Is it ok to bleed my brakes with brake oil that was originally meant for cars or can it be harmful for my bike?
    Thanks and greetings from Finland!

Now this is an interesting question

    • @macvos
      @macvos 5 лет назад

While DOT fluids adhere to the same standards, "mineral" fluids vary wildly. For example, Magura Royal Blood has a boiling point of 120 degrees Celsius, while Shimano brake fluid has a boiling point of 280 degrees Celsius. Viscosity levels also differ and additives in mineral brake fluid for cars might damage seals in bicycle brakes. I wouldn't take the risk for the 25 bucks a liter of Shimano mineral oil costs (likely enough for a lifetime).

Nah man 26 tiers are fine, I know lots of people who still ride 26 on dh bikes. I would personally get a 27.5, because I am tall and they just feel right to me.
I think you should get the one that makes you feel more comfortable, who cares is it's outdated?
However, I guess 26" on dh is better for parks, ramps and jumps and freeride stuff. If you ride trails and roots and rocky stuff and you wanna goes fast as fuck 27.5 might feel better.

10:37 not all chains are long enough for 11-46T with big jockey wheels in rear dérailleur, and 36T round ring, and long chain stay, with my bike I would have to do that too.
but I run 11-46T x 34T oval, with Box One. I don't have top cut make the chain longer, but if it was a round ring I would need to, that would be 36T round ring.
it's 114 link KMC chain, the chain stay is 450mm.
if I ran 11-50T I would have to make it much longer
but I think I will go for E13 TRS PLus which is 9-46T, and go down in chainring size, I won't have to make the chain longer, and setup will be lighter, and I will have bigger range.
    So the in summery:
    longer chain stays
    bigger jockey wheels
    bigger chainring
    bigger cassette
