The main thing about the 38 for me is that it has a more linear springrate than the 36 because of a clever feature in the air spring assembly that increases lower leg volume, which means its slightly more tunable. And if you reduce the 38 to 160mm, its even more linear and has much more bushing overlap than the 36

AHRK more like you can’t afford shit. Why do you care what other people do with their money? The video explained who this Fork was for and who it wasn’t. Some people buy new cars every few years because the are able to and they want to. That’s how a capitalist free market society works. Just like new cel phones. Many people also buy them new more than they need. So let’s just put all the bike companies and there employees outta business cause you figure we should all be riding 10 year old rigid bikes and DH tracks. Still waiting for your credentials and experience. Really curious how old you are and what you do for a living ?
I'm currently building my own frame, and want to make an Enduro hardtail ... I think i'll go with the 36, since anyway it's a hardtail so i'm not going to be anywhere near the fork's limit
Maybe if you're building a mainly downhill bike, have the skills to ride at that speed and such tough terrain and dont feel the 36 is sufficient then think about it but i think a personal comparison is a good idea. I have a 2019 RM Instinct BC with 160 front and 155 rear and to be honest i am sure i could get away with 140 front like the standard Instinct as i ride Blue trails with a few rock gardens here and there and my skills and not wanting to get hurt keep me on the blue trails, having said that it doesnt mean i wont try a Black trail but on average i really dont need 160, i got an AMAZING deal on the bike as a leftover so i bought it and LOVE it with NO regrets so i can deal with a bit of extra weight. Mike gives a good example as why some people have 2 bikes especially depending on your local trails so you dont need to drive 3 + hours for a double black if you're at that skill level?
I Have a 150Pike On my RM ..... The Braking Chatter At 50/60 Kmh Is Unbearable i Have A 160Z1 On My CF Warden and Dont Get Any Of That . Personally I wouldnt Run Anything Smaller Than a 36 😎 I'm a LW Rider Ride Vancouver 😎

I really think they should start manufacturing bikes that suits Medium to heavier riders, The size thing I think down Pat, But nothing for heavier riders I think that's fork is a good addition A little bit more options to play around with Which is great. Don't call anybody might tip off the kiljoys out there and might make another fork in downgraded.
I bought the 38 pistachios before i went to morzine for a season (3 months). I just got home and the forks were sooo good on big mountain trails. But the CSU is fucked. Gotta send them back for warranty for creaking CSU. Other than that there the best forks ive rode on my enduro bike. Santa cruz nomad 4.
There is one bit you left out, and it's probably on purpose. If you have an E-bike, the 38 is going to be a very welcome addition. Great summary otherwise.
Hey Mike, My new Devinci Spartan 29" frame will be arriving soon and I was wondering whether you put in an angleset to get the 63.5 degree headangle? or is that only due to your mullet setup? I was thinking about building the frame into a mullet setup anyway... Do you think the 29 Spartan would be able to be converted to a mullet bike as good or as simply as the 27.5 frame? Love the channel guys!! Keep it up!
Yes, there is a 1 degree Works angleset in there! In short, making a 29in frame into a mullet is generally not recommended since you have to put a smaller wheel in the back. This does a couple of things including, lowering bottom bracket height. Give us a call or email and we are happy to discuss this in more detail with you! (360) 306-8827 // sales@thelostco.com

Run what you ride, unless your a high level local racer or ews rider you upgrading isn’t going to make you any better. Ive seen people smash jumps and roots on ‘short travel’ bikes. Its not what you ride it’s how you ride

Gotta love that cradling feeling of the 38! Glad we could help you make the right call 😎 -Tor
Now I get it. Great vid on the drop
You making the cradle would make a perfect meme and sticker
I was just seeing which one I should put on my next build! Thanks lost co.
AHRK ok thanks
Wish Rock Shox would do a new Totem. That thing had 40mm stanchions in single crown!
i run a 36 on my 2014 spec. enduro, i know ikeep things a long time, and im probably to light for it, 60 and a bit kg. but what about my yet to arrive levo with all that wieght. i might be 60+ in age but i still ride as fast as i can downhill. well explained vid cheers
Nice, next vid 38 vs zeb please.
I need a triple crown and 200+ out back. I ride ultra conservative fire roads and flow trails with no chunk.
i just got an altitude with a 38. waiting for it to stop raining so i can go hit it
Maybe if you're building a mainly downhill bike, have the skills to ride at that speed and such tough terrain and dont feel the 36 is sufficient then think about it but i think a personal comparison is a good idea.
I’ve been told the 170mm yari on my Commencal meta am isn’t stiff enough. I’ve also never felt it “flex”
38,I have the 34 it great on the trails and climbing but I'm 200lb and Curious about The 38.
Great video, thanks!
Got a 27.5 180mm fox 38 under a hardtail...... Dont blame me... Its the only available fox in our market 😢
If your a midget on a medium a 38 has to be overkill. If your 6'3 and 200 plus a 38 probably makes sense
This is the most helpful comparison I've seen yet! Love how you showed us your use purposes and then gave clear recommendations. Thank you
I bought the 38 pistachios before i went to morzine for a season (3 months).
Only bums ride E-bikes lol
Hey Mike,
My new Devinci Spartan 29" frame will be arriving soon and I was wondering whether you put in an angleset to get the 63.5 degree headangle? or is that only due to your mullet setup? I was thinking about building the frame into a mullet setup anyway... Do you think the 29 Spartan would be able to be converted to a mullet bike as good or as simply as the 27.5 frame?
Love the channel guys!!
Keep it up!
Yes, there is a 1 degree Works angleset in there!
In short, making a 29in frame into a mullet is generally not recommended since you have to put a smaller wheel in the back. This does a couple of things including, lowering bottom bracket height. Give us a call or email and we are happy to discuss this in more detail with you!

Your main bike is a Devinci??? WHERE YO KONA 153 AT?????????????????
Dude...You rock!
I bought a 180 na2 36 air spring from you guys? What do you mean the 36 maxes out at 170? Are you referring to 2021+?
The best for me is the one I can afford. Unfortunately, that's none of them :D
Just facts would be good.
What a guy I found this for video very Educational I am definitely in the market for a 38 fox 170mm 😍🤘 I got a yeti SB6 in a medium just wondering how it will affect the geometric s tho as my preferred riding would be Lake District up fell down , My local Lancashire UK 🇬🇧 on the doorstep of Pendle hill 🤘
Thanks Mike.
You're so right. 36 grip2 160 is awesome. But...38 170 is just so much more cradling and stiffer; and cooler looking in Orange. I'm 173 kitted aggressive am rider loving drops and gnarly. Such confidence booming here in loose rocky Arizona.
Thank you again for you entertaining and informative reviews.
Currently running a 160mm 36. Have it listed on PB currently as I am trying to get a 38 in 170. Also an Arizona rider frequenting SoMo etc.
Wow, so informative! Great job guys. I'm a big fairly aggressive rider riding 180mm on my 2021 Rocky Mountain Slayer and although I don't have any other choice, the added stiffness is so confidence-inspiring. I absolutely love the control it gives you. Again great job guys!!!
I'm 6'1" and 135kg and ride hard tail with 150mm Lyrik ultimate. It's stiff, it's plush it feels amazing. Why should I buy 36 or 38 ? 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Marcin Terlecki because you can
Sorry to bother you but your fork is just a 35. So it's just a milliliter difference from the 36.
You don't need to it's a amazing fork a lot of reviews push people to spend a lot of $ on the newest parts that aren't necessary for most people
@@adrianszabelski8105 it's only natural for the industry to develop new products. But a guy like me can wait a couple of years before buying something that "new"
@@Albkiller22 ye for most people it's unnecessary but some need it but unless your a pro you'll be fine with a 35mm or 36mm fork
Well explained!
I want to hear more about the Spartan setup as a mullet.
I may be wrong but can you please make a video how to maintain a fox fork or fork in general please
2mm people 😂 all marketing bs. Id rather a more focus design and not 17 million models every year. My helm mk2 at 35mm is still a great stiff fork, im 6'4" 200 lbs 🎉
When are you going to do some more riding videos?
Watching you going through the rooty sections I'd say you need more PSI and tokens in the 38s as bottomed out loads
The fork is setup to my preferences. For slow motion shots for fork movement we're typically leaning over the bars more than normal and shoving the fork into holes, so keep that in mind as well.

Hello Mike! Thank´s, your videos and reviews are amazing!!, I have a Salta Cruz Hightower 2021, can I put the a Fox 38 in 170mm, do you think I lose much power when I go climbing?
Thanks for the kind words! As far as climbing, a 170 Fox 38 should crush it for the Hightower!
@@TheLostCo Thank´s very much! Best,
I can't be the only one who thinks the LE 36 looks like poop...
I got a 38 because it's 2 more and therefore better
AHRK why not hr 34 then? Or no fork at all? You know better than everyone apparently
Would of been cool to see a comparison with the same bike
I think a comparison with the same bike, same travel, same settings and a rider that wasn't told which fork was which would have been way more interesting.
Any tips on how each one climbs uphill?
I just ordered a Devinci Troy with Fox 36... Just sold my Spartan because I wanted an all rounder.
Why can’t a long travel bike be an all rounder? A lot of variables to consider.
Fox 36 max travel is 160, not 170.

i ride 170mm fox 36 and its stiff. whats not stiff is fucking handlebars and stems with "5nm" screw limits that shit can twist during ride and you will have bad time
Thanks for the great comparison video. Definitely helped my decision for my next build.
If you read this, don’t worry you don’t have to spend 1k for the same thing just 2mm bigger. You’ll be more than fine with a 36 :) But if you don’t know on what to spend your money, sure go on.
Love my 38
Can you do one of these for the Fox 34 vs 36 since they overlap at 130mm and 140mm.
Not sure that 36 2021 could have 170mm. Looks like bushings in it not designed for 170mm and starting from 2021 line 170mm is only for the 38. Just get the 36 heritage you had on the
test)
Run what you ride, unless your a high level local racer or ews rider you upgrading isn’t going to make you any better. Ive seen people smash jumps and roots on ‘short travel’ bikes. Its not what you ride it’s how you ride
@@ark8tct Its the very definition of consumerism. Smart marketing to convince people they need to buy things they dont need.
AHRK do like it don’t comment and don’t buy it. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy a larger fork.

how about the comparison for a 150mm ebike. would you opt for 38 or 36?
My 36 has 180mm travel maybe i should switch 😬
I'm curious why Fox didn't just try to make 40s lighter.
Most people will not notice the difference in stiffness, myself included. Wouldn't turn it down, but satisfied w/ my Lyrik for riding in PNW.
Lyric is a noodle if you are a heavier rider
@@deanemberley2333 Gonna have to disagree w/ you sir, but I'm 200 even w/ gear on
Yhigma I have a Scott Ransom 920 with a Lyric and a Pivot Firebird 29 with a Fox 38. I’m 220 with riding gear and ride rough technical terrain. I mix it up with both bikes and the lyric is a adequate fork and I really like the supple feel of RS however the is a noticeable amount of flex when I am hitting rock gardens at speed .
@@deanemberley2333 Hell yeah man, I'm glad you're happy w/ the product. We mostly have rooty tech over here, but the only time I notice flex is for really chundery bike park type riding, the more singletracky steep fall line trails I don't even think about it.
Can’t wait to upgrade my fox 36 to a 37.99, not ready for the 38 yet
That 37.99 is going to be WAY lighter than a 38!
It's amazing how much his voice and behavior is similar to the guy "styropyro" 😃 watch him and tell if you think so too??👍
