  • There is a lot of bourbon out there, some of it's a good value and some of it's not worth retail. Is blanton's worth retail? Most of us would say yes but is it worth more? This is a question we get asked quite often. So let's break down some bottles we'd only pay retail for and not a penny over.

The prices might be nice (I've shopped in VA which has ABC stores) but the selection is limited to where you have to win a lottery to have the privilege of buying it AND have to be a state resident. So, if you want to really hunt harder to get allocated stuff you either have to be lucky or look in another state.

@@steventhrasher3608 That’s awesome! I work for one of my local liquor distributors so I know that the cost for the liquor stores here is about $82. I do overpay for Shenk’s because I can never find it anywhere but online, but the taste varies year to year, and to Dan’s point, it’s not labeled as bourbon or “straight” anything, so it could contain added coloring or flavoring. I don’t think Michter’s would do that, but who knows 🤷🏻‍♂.

Interesting takes. I think 4R SBBS is a big palate preference thing. I love it. I'll take one over Stagg (JR) or EHT BP every time. Recently snagged 5 different OF SBBS picks and I love them all. They're all wildly different LIKE the 4R picks are different and that is something I appreciate.
That being said, I'd pay up to 125 for a 4R SBBS and up to 100 for an OF SBBS. But that's about it. At least the 4R stuff is age stated.
That being said, EC Private Barrels, I would pay over retail for those. They're the thing that are wildly inconsistent for me and almost always drink like straight fire if they're over 126 proof. And I say that as a huge ECBP fan.

Just bought an Old Forester Single Barrel pick at 132 proof and I can attest that it is straight heat. The alcohol vapor overpowers the nose and palate, unfortunately. But when I put it on a whiskey cube is does become delicious and the classic Old Forester flavors come through in a big way. Mainly bought it because it was a combo deal with a Weller 107 pick, but I wouldn't buy again and I love Old Forester. Sounds like I got an inferior pick compared to others at least.

They are all over MA. The warehouse absolutely matters. K, H, and I, seem to be the best ones, G is so so. This isnt just from the ones we have, but from the research i have done, tend to agree. They are so hit or miss, but when they hit, they are bangers. They are all pretty damn hot, some are just so hot all you get is heat, which idk why the places doing the picks even accept them. But the good ones, eventhough they're hot, they have amazing flavor, which is why i kept buying them even after getting some duds.
Four roses picks are a little more consistent, but i havent found any absolute bangers. I have a couple and tasted a couple others. Never been super impressed with them.
Angles envy, i always stayed away from them because i never heard good things from them, ppl usually say they are pretty flat/muted. But i did sample one that was really damn good, so now im going to pay more attention to them, from stores i trust. Not total wine, cause their picks almost always suck, for everything.

The first Barterhouse 20 bottles i bought were at $75, the last ones, years later were at $350. You can still find them for $500+ online. The first set out had a really unique flavor profile, like maraschino cherries with toasted french oak. Later bottlings seemed more muted or took more air /time to develop that profile. The point is, with every allocated/ special bottling, the lowest price is when it first comes out (and nobody knows if its any good) and it seems to just go up from there, the more time elapses from release date. Supply, demand, followed by eventual scarcity… why am i wasting my time investing in equities/ stocks? Oh f***, because i keep drinking the whiskey!😂

I have a michters toasted sour mash. Not a big fan. I also have a michters toasted barrel proof rye, again, not a big fan, better than the toasted sour mash, but still not nearly as good as i was hoping for. The bombergers and shenks are much better. I should actually get back into the BP toasted rye to see if it opened up any since i havent had much of it, but i have had a few pours over a month or so n wasnt thrilled about it.

Paid $300 for this year's mid-winters...saw it in another store later in the day (in a completely unexpected place) for $180...kick. in. the. nuts. Also, I have seen the birthday bourbon on a shelf for $1200 this year...same guy had last years for $1400...

The real kick in the nuts is they produced like 180,000 bottles of it last year (MWND). I think true MSRP for it is $130. Most places around me have it for between $150-$180 and I've passed on buying it no less than 5 times already where as in years past I never saw a single bottle.

Interesting regional difference on OF BP and Four Roses BP. In the Northeast, I have only had delicious OF BP bottles, but as much as I like 4🌹s, I find them to be much more inconsistent. $100 for either is my limit. Birthday Bourbon doesn’t stand up to 117, Presidents, or even OF BP (not tasted 1924 yet). Would I buy a Birthday bottle if I could find one, yes, but would limit to $150. I also agree, it is disappointing what High West has done. At $90 the MWD was great! I looked at one on the shelf @$150 this year after tasting it in a bar, and thinking with inflation, maybe $120, but at $150 stay on the shelf. I am a big Heaven Hill fan and buy all I can get of ECBP and Larceny BP. The ECBP has been regressing and Larceny has been getting better, but paying above $70?? I hope not! I stopped buying both Blanton’s and Henry McKenna 10, when the prices went over $60. I am also disappointed in Joseph Magnus cigar blend. I have happily paid $90 for standard or Murray Hill, however I wouldn’t pay more than $125 for cigar blend. There are so many other whiskeys that bring more to the table than that one.

I'm confused. Here in Alberta Canada, we are paying $40 CAD for Larceny 92 proof! Thats like $33 US. Are you talking about a specific Larceny?

they are talking about the Larceny Barrel Proofs (released 3 times a year like the ECBPs, not the 92 Larceny.

Ive gotten to the point to where I see a bottle that I know for a fact is over SRP, I immediately pass on. I will go get a bottle I know is at SRP rather than overpay even if I know it’s phenomenal. The secondary market and a few stores have abused the market for pricing. I appreciate stores that refuse to jack up prices of products(Pappy) and that’s where I would prefer to go.

Agreed with Four Roses SB, love them, but not at $149. If Larceny BP goes to $100, I'm just gonna say no. Good stuff at $59-$69 a bottle, but no consistent enough for me to pay $100.

I loved the first lower proof, Old Forester pick, I had about eight years ago. My current cask strength pick, is very disappointing, BuyRite liquors in New Jersey.👎 $89.00. I would rather have the 1910 or 1920.
